Bhoot Chaturdashi or the Halloween for the bengalis has a symbolic reminiscence. . Read the caption below . As per the folklore, the day before the Kali Puja is observed as Bhoot Chaturdashi. The veil between the two worlds is thin and it is believed on the eve of this dark night the souls of the deceased come down to earth to visit their dear ones. It is also believed that the 14 forefathers of a family visit their living relatives and so 14 Diyas are placed all around the house, to guide them homewards and especially to chase away the evil ones (as shown in the picture). . . As a practice, we draw these images of dushtu bhoot (evil ghosts) running out of the house as we light up the diyas around the house. This was done courtesy my cousin maternal sister who is an artist herself. The day is observed across the country in various names like Kali Choudas, Naraka Chathurdasi etc. . . Since Ganeshotsav is over now, here are some of my observations during the festival that helps me restore my faith in humanity:

Lines upon lines of shops selling idols and decorations, and the sellers interacting cutely with little kids as they select their first Ganesh idol

Joining in with chants of "Ganpati Bappa Morya" with random strangers and families taking home their idol as you pass by them.

Displays of mythology and history of india through various dekhavas (attractions), plays and songs and people watching attentively regardless of age, gender, caste and religion.

Also people just standing and a watching a puppet dance on popular songs (this literally made my heart squeeze like..... we're all just kids at heart)

Spontaneous discussion on My Friend Ganesha movies

The processions. The cultural integrity still intact after all these years.

I wasnt able to fully enjoy the festival this year because of my depression, but these little things made me feel a little better.

We Bengalis have our own Halloween, and it's called ভূত চতুর্দশী (Bhoot Chaturdashi), but it's way darker and spookier in theme. It's on the day before Kali Puja (/Diwali). (Yes, today, 23rd of October).

It's not about kids in costumes getting candies.

It's about the veil between our world and spirit world getting thin, and the spirits of ancestors come down to Earth. Encountering something supernatural on this eve wouldn't be a surprise.

People light 14 diyas (১৪ প্রদীপ) around their house to respect the spirits of the 14 forefathers who come down to visit them.

And it's said that if you venture out into the night of ভূত চতুর্দশী, you might even get spirited away...
