To fully grasp the current situation in San Francisco, where venture capitalists are trying to take control of City Hall, you must listen to Balaji Srinivasan. Before you do, steel yourself for what’s to come: A normal person could easily mistake his rambling train wrecks of thought for a crackpot’s ravings, but influential Silicon Valley billionaires regard him as a genius.
“Balaji has the highest rate of output per minute of good new ideas of anybody I’ve ever met,” wrote Marc Andreessen, co-founder of the V.C. firm Andreessen-Horowitz, in a blurb for Balaji’s 2022 book, The Network State: How to Start a New Country. The book outlines a plan for tech plutocrats to exit democracy and establish new sovereign territories. I mentioned Balaji’s ideas in two previous stories about Network State–related efforts in California—a proposed tech colony called California Forever and the tech-funded campaign to capture San Francisco’s government.
Balaji, a 43-year-old Long Island native who goes by his first name, has a solid Valley pedigree: He earned multiple degrees from Stanford University, founded multiple startups, became a partner at Andreessen-Horowitz and then served as chief technology officer at Coinbase. He is also the leader of a cultish and increasingly strident neo-reactionary tech political movement that sees American democracy as an enemy. In 2013, a New York Times story headlined “Silicon Valley Roused by Secession Call” described a speech in which he “told a group of young entrepreneurs that the United States had become ‘the Microsoft of nations’: outdated and obsolescent.”
“The speech won roars from the audience at Y Combinator, a leading start-up incubator,” reported the Times. Balaji paints a bleak picture of a dystopian future in a U.S. in chaos and decline, but his prophecies sometimes fall short. Last year, he lost $1 million in a public bet after wrongly predicting a massive surge in the price of Bitcoin.
Still, his appetite for autocracy is bottomless. Last October, Balaji hosted the first-ever Network State Conference. Garry Tan—the current Y Combinator CEO who’s attempting to spearhead a political takeover of San Francisco—participated in an interview with Balaji and cast the effort as part of the Network State movement. Tan, who made headlines in January after tweeting “die slow motherfuckers” at local progressive politicians, frames his campaign as an experiment in “moderate” politics. But in a podcast interview one month before the conference, Balaji laid out a more disturbing and extreme vision.
“What I’m really calling for is something like tech Zionism,” he said, after comparing his movement to those started by the biblical Abraham, Jesus Christ, Joseph Smith (founder of Mormonism), Theodor Herzl (“spiritual father” of the state of Israel), and Lee Kuan Yew (former authoritarian ruler of Singapore). Balaji then revealed his shocking ideas for a tech-governed city where citizens loyal to tech companies would form a new political tribe clad in gray t-shirts. “And if you see another Gray on the street … you do the nod,” he said, during a four-hour talk on the Moment of Zen podcast. “You’re a fellow Gray.”
The Grays’ shirts would feature “Bitcoin or Elon or other kinds of logos … Y Combinator is a good one for the city of San Francisco in particular.” Grays would also receive special ID cards providing access to exclusive, Gray-controlled sectors of the city. In addition, the Grays would make an alliance with the police department, funding weekly “policeman’s banquets” to win them over.
“Grays should embrace the police, okay? All-in on the police,” said Srinivasan. “What does that mean? That’s, as I said, banquets. That means every policeman’s son, daughter, wife, cousin, you know, sibling, whatever, should get a job at a tech company in security.”

by Zachary Garris | “Woes” are especially prominent in the prophets, such as Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the Twelve. As for the New Testament, there are woes in Revelation. But the vast majority of New Testament woes are spoken by Christ in the Gospels, especially Matthew and Luke. Our Lord regularly pronounced woes on the wicked, which highlights that…
Getting back to Jesus Christ and what made his teachings revolutionary—it wasn’t the idea that if you structured your life a certain way that you’d be able to fly around in a nightgown with all your friends after you died, but rather it was about how the meek are worthy human beings. That idea was extremely radical at the time because it had nothing to do with any of the magic and fairy tale found elsewhere in the Bible, but instead it had the strength of being grounded in reality, the reality being that all human beings have value.

[Jesus] is coming into the world when all of the societies at the time are based on slave labor. He was a radical and was perceived as such, which is why he was crucified. Garry Wills had a column once where he said that, if you’re thinking about Christ, you’re closer to the mark if you’re thinking about Lenny Bruce than you are if you’re thinking of Archbishop Russell.

Recently, I spent a non-insignificant sum on tickets to see The Killers during their upcoming Las Vegas residency. A couple months prior, I bought tickets to see Death Cab & The Postal Service perform their now 20 year old breakthrough records. This is not to brag, but only to say: I am not relevant. I am a skeleton. I am an irrelevant skeleton.
Once I looked at my music list as an Important Document of the Past Year. I’d try to listen to all the stuff, read the lists, and put together a coherent and definitive list. I didn’t do that in 2024; I didn’t try, I didn’t care to try, and, therefore, I just didn’t listen to that much stuff. This is fine! My life is no better or worse for the change! Also, no one gives a shit about what I listened to last (or any) year!
So, a format change. I’m gonna list a bunch of songs I liked with the normal commentary. After that, I’ll rank my top ten movies of the year and my top five favorite books I read in 2023. Sound good? I think it’s fine.
2023 YEAR IN MUSIC!
Big Thief - “Vampire Empire” A slow dawning of just, like, oh, Big Thief is just one of my favorite bands. They’re hitting that mid-2010’s (teens? Twenty-tens? What are we doing with this one?) The National-zone where every record they put out is a unique and rockin’ bop. This track is a good example of the more aggressive yelly-stuff.
boygenius - “Not Strong Enough” 2023 was the year of Taylor Swift and the guys were a part of it. My favorite supergroup was at their peak powers last year, releasing the ALBUM OF THE YEAR as well as MY FAVORITE CONCERT OF THE YEAR WHERE I CRIED A BIT DURING “COOL ABOUT IT”. I fucking love that record so much. Before they all blew up, Baker was the stealth star carrying the pathos while Dacus made us sad and Bridgers screamed excellently. Just watch them on SNL; they’re so happy. It’s nice.
The New Pornographers - “Pontius Pilate’s Home Movies” Not much to say about a middling album that produced this banger with the funniest line of the year, “Now you're clearing the room just like Pontius Pilate/When he showed all his home movies/All of his friends yelling, ‘Pilate, too soon’” Side note: You ever notice how English people don’t say “quotation marks,” but instead, “inverted commas?” Frankly, it’s fucked up.
Slaughter Beach, Dog - “My Sister in Jesus Christ” Really enjoyed this album by the former Modern Baseball co-frontman. He’s settled into a more shambolic pop-oriented sensibility which suits him fine.
Sufjan Stevens - “Will Anybody Ever Love Me?” I kinda came to Javelin late but after sitting through several listens it’s definitely in the pantheon of Stevens albums. I’m not sure there’s anything on here that’s a hit, but it’s so lush, dense, and achingly beautiful. He’s a man genius. ALSO ALBUM OF THE YEAR; SURE, WHY NOT?
Taylor Swift - “Cruel Summer” I don’t care this song came out in 2022. I’m in my Lovers Era! It’s pop perfection! I love(er) it! I have a lot of thoughts about Taylor Swift but no one caaaaaaaaaares. Go Chiefs.
Wednesday - “Chosen to Deserve” A twangy, meandering tune about all the embarrassing things you did when you were younger and still torment you and will forever except now you’re in love so maybe it won’t be so bad anymore? BONUS: Really enjoyed MJ Lenderman’s live album; those Wednesday folks are doing great!

Kasra and I decided on taking two pictures. Our intentions for the images were very different, but we merged them into something greater than the sum. Kasra was intrigued by the colors in the sky and clouds when the sun is setting/rising. He was also interested in adventuring with colors, i.e. color-grading. I was interested in the contrast of two locations in the city, along the same street and only 7 mins apart. For context, on one side of Massachusetts Ave near Boston Symphony Orchestra you can see beautiful buildings, The First Church of Christ, and Northeastern University. Going toward Boston Medical Center, you will witness a sudden change in surroundings; Beautiful buildings slowly changing place to neglected neighborhoods, pedestrians with Smart watches and brand clothing give way to a population of homeless people.
Despite our different intentions, they merged very well. The sunrise and its warm colors are a symbol of new beginnings, hope and prosperity, going well with the BSO picture. The sunset with its ominous red give visions of frailty, ends and lost opportunities. Below, we outline the details of these two pictures.
Frame 1: Sunrise
This picture will be taken near Boston Symphony Orchestra, facing northeast towards a pool. The ‘Mass Ave’ sign should be well lit and clear in the picture. The picture is taken specifically to have lots of open spaces, and at least 20% clear sky (to elicit hopefulness). The sun will rise between two buildings, when its color is almost bright yellow/orange. There are 2-3 people in the frame, all walking or running, spaced apart, on the other side of the street, about 10 feet away. They are indifferent to each other, as if consumed by their own livelihoods. They either don’t express emotion, or express joy to a small extent. Everything should be in focus, and nothing should be blurred. The colors should be slightly saturated, towards green and yellow to elicit life.
Frame 2: Sunset
This picture will be taken after crossing Boston Medical Center, facing southeast towards the homeless community that sit there with their belongings (e.g., shopping carts full of clothes and plastic bags). Again, the ‘Mass Ave’ sign should be well lit and clear in the picture. This picture must have small bits of sky, ideally cloudy, and should be more filled with the chaos of the community (to elicit a sense of claustrophobia). The sun has mostly set, which casts an ominous red beneath the clouds. There are ~15 people in the frame, all sitting down, cramped together, about 3 feet from the camera. They are closer than the people in the other picture, albeit tired and depressed, as if they cannot forget the turmoil they are in. Their emotions are mostly a mix of fatigue, anger and care. Ideally, the focus should be on the people to guide the audience amid the chaos, but the sign must also be in focus. All colors except red should be undersaturated to give the chaotic population a grey and washed-out palette. Amid this grey, the sign should be bright green (if possible) to gather the attention of the audience and help them see the point of these two pictures.
We were very happy with these pictures and the message they entail. There is a great deal of ideality and opportunism in the conditions we like for the photos, but we believe the combination of people, symbolism of the sun, color palette and framing deliver our vision.

by Zachary Garris | We usually think of strength in physical terms. But the Bible often speaks of strength in reference to faith in God. This is seen at the end of the book of Deuteronomy, which contains Moses’ farewell sermon to Israel as the people of God prepared to enter the Promised Land. Controversial actor Uche Maduagwu has congratulated his colleague Tonto Dikeh on being anointed by Jesus Christ for a specific purpose.
According to report by the Nation Newspaper, Maduawgu said Dikeh has been anointed by Jesus to carry his children.
Shading the actress’ ex-lover, Kpokpogri, the Instagram actor noted neither him nor herdsmen are strong enough to scatter what God has endorsed.
“Congrats Tonto Dikeh, Jesus has finally anointed your womb to carry all my pikins. What Oluwa has approved, no KpoKpo Garri herdsmen fit scatter,” Maduagwu said.
The self-styled ‘classic entertainer’ further alleged several popular actresses have tried dating him with the aid of fetish powers but vowed to stick by the mother of one.
“So many popular actresses have tried to use juju to date me because of the sweet way I roll my waist. But as for me and my bra, we go follow you,” he added.
