Gamzee is responsible for literally everything in Homestuck. He is the reason why John got the Harlequin that was used in his prototyping. That gave everything the hat. Jack killed the Black Queen because he didn't want to wear the hat. Then he destroyed the door in SGRUB. If that didn't happen: The trolls would enter the B universe. Alright, nothing too exciting here. The interesting part is that the humans would have won if Jack didn't kill the Queen. Which means they wouldn't have Scratched their session. Which means B2 would never exist. No B2 means Caliborn's soul wouldn't have entered Lil Cal. Which means Lord English doesn't exist. And it also means Doc Scratch doesn't exist. No Doc Scratch means the trolls didn't turn into a violent race. Which means the Hiveswap rebellion didn't happen. A part of the rebellion was using the "weapon" that turned out to be a portal. Not doing that means Hiveswap never happened.

TableStuck, What It Is and Who We Are

Hi! I’ve never done one of these before but i’m gonna try my best! Now, i’ll be introducing a Cool and New project called Tablestuck!

To answer a few questions off the bat:

What is TableStuck? TableStuck is a Homestuck DnD System utilizing the D20 system and endeavors to create a DnD system that is as accurate to the Homestuck Sburb game as possible. By extension SORRB is also the name of the Alpha test session of this system, DMed by me and played by 8 others and played via Discord, of which I will also be updating this blog with what happens in said game. Who are you? We are a small group of dedicated Homestuck and Tabletop RPG fans working to create a fun creative way to play the popular Sburb game as told from the Homestuck webcomic. We hope to be able to create a fun, interactive game that everyone can enjoy! The group is spearheaded by myself with a loyal second in command and a total of ___ others that are wanting make this a fun experience for all involved, including you, the future players!

When is this expected to be released? Unfortunately I can’t give a set deadline on when this will be officially complete, as these things take time and real life can get in the way of that. Why are you doing this? Because we love Homestuck and Tabletop RPGs! Homestuck was such a wonderful experience over the years and we were all sad when it was finished, whilst looking forwards to Hiveswap to curb our Homestuck cravings. I myself have been a fan and avid player of Tabletop RPGs for quiet a long time and always enjoyed making up my own Homebrew rules and systems. I figured one day why not make the best of both worlds? I asked around and found a group of like-minded individuals and we all found that this could be a cool, new way to experience Homestuck once more and even create our own stories using it while we’re at it! How are you developing this? Well as mentioned before we’re utilizing a Discord server that any and all are free to join so long as they follow the rules. We’re also using a variety of different ways to keep track of, update and backup all of the info, rules, systems and mechanics that we make, whilst following the basic rules of a D20 system and putting our own spin on it. Thanks for taking enough interest to check us out! I’ll be making a post pertaining to the current status of where we’re at, what we plan to do and what’s already in progress or completed shortly after this. After that post will be another that contains a summary of our own Sburb Session utilizing and testing what we have already and what’s happened thus for in it. The neverending Page & Knight discourse

I’ll start off with saying that your ideas on the Page and Knight classes are a pretty fresh take, clearly original ideas that draw from a solid foundation in the canon.

From your explanations however, I think that the Knight is the active class, and Page the passive, given that the only direct canon explanation for what the passive/active distinction amounts to is that active classes directly do something with their aspect, and passive classes invite others to do that same thing. The knight herself is still Serving, whereas the page is still inviting others to Serve, regardless of whether they are serving him. Just because Serving seems to imply acting for another person doesn’t mean it’s any different than the Prince who can destroy others (aspect). Both are acting impressing their will on another, the distinction being that one is trying to help, the other is most likely hurting.

However, I can’t say I’m convinced on Serve being the primary verb for the pair. This debate is a old as the classes themselves, yet we still find ourselves here. Serve is good, and you’ve found evidence for it, but I say it’s not Enough.

From my own theory crafting experience, I’ve cycled through most of the different words thought of as being the Key Verb. Be it Exploit (which really works for Dave’s time looping powers, and to a lesser extent Karkats victory over Clover) Wield or Use (which I then extrapolated to mean the knight was some sort of item using class, that they had a favored weapon that they could summon, an aspect themed mount, or perhaps a batman like toolbelt that contained a variety of aspect aligned tools that only they are proficient in using, eventually boiling it down to the idea that the Knight can use aspect associated items without any difficulty) as well as Protect (the knights armor is such a sound power concept). The most clear non HS example I could think of was Guts from Berserk, who is the Knight of Rage (though anyone with the Brand becomes an Heir of Doom). Guts’ dragonslayer sword is described as being more a slab of iron than a blade, basically the thing is way to big for a human, he was Wielding a Contrivance. That, and he eventually obtains the berserker armor, which protects him with his rage (protect being a strong word here, but it let’s him keep going). The Page I’ve described as the sidekick, the one who puts Armor on other people, who brings them their weapon, or car keys, given the knights penchant for having a mount. Anthy himemiyas ability to pull a sword out of her or others chest seems on surface level to be a obvious page move (Another time I’d like to discuss with you whether or not Anthy was a Page, or if the swords were complete powers in of themselves, metaphorically far more than swords, making her a Muse. But I digress)

I’m Making/playing a Sburb tabletop game with some of my friends, and the Knight of Doom has never been satisfied with his powers, and I have changed them over and over again to no avail, which Is why I have looked at the knight through so many lenses.

The most recent idea I’ve had for the Knight is something I’ve not seen touched on. When I asked my Rogue of Mind to describe what a knight traditionally is, he gave me a simplistic, shounen answer of how knights go around challenging others for the honor of their lord, and to test their mettle. I thought it was silly, until I realized the Knights in canon all did that in some form. Knights seem to challenge others to a competition related to their aspect. Dave regularly got into Rap Battles with the trolls, as well as Ironic oneupsmanship games. Karkat incessantly Argued with people, especially over Relationships and Team related things. And latula played video games I guess. The same thing is also present in the pages, to a lesser extent. Tavros was an avid fiduspawn player. Jake physically fought the dirkbots, while also playing romantic games with the alphas (while relationships are Blood, and your preferences are Heart, I give Eridan and Jake as examples that Unrequited Feelings are Hopes domain). I’ve got nothing for Horuss, which maybe is part of it? I’ve struggled with whether to call this Fight or Compete. It’s pretty obvious once you look back at it, but it still leaves questions; how do we find a word that includes the concept of Protect, Wield, Exploit, Use, Serve and Fight? They all have grounds in the canon, and all of the classes have to have one Key Verb to them. So what is it?

so shit kinda hit the fan for me and i am mostly cleanin up and getting ready for some announcements, so im gonna keep this pretty short, i just wanna knock a bunch of asks out of the way:

1) once i like, can, i’d love to talk about Anthy. I’ve been reading her as a Witch or a Muse depending on my mood--I don’t really think she’s a Page at all, though I can see how you’d think so if you read them as Passive. On which point,

That’s not true? That isn’t the description of Passive classes, for starters. Passive classes invite the Aspect Itself to act through them, or invite Y action onto the Aspect. That can include influencing others, but it also includes simply acting as a channel for the “will of the Aspect” itself.

Calliope gives us the “For themselves” vs. “For others” definition seperately, but I don’t really see a reason to single that one out as Class-specific while not doing so for the description she gives for Prince/Bard. And all classes employ both “exploit” and “allow” behaviors at various times.

Hence why I think understanding the classes is easier when you parse whether they tend to benefit themselves or others.

It’s Serve. Hiveswap makes me even more certain, since it’s way less subtle. For starters, I don’t really think Wield, Exploit and Use make sense as Knight/Page verbs.

Eridan, Vriska, Roxy, Rose, and countless others can be said to “Wield” their aspect like a weapon through items--the dice, roxy’s cubes, eridan and rose’s wands, etc. Rose can easily be said to be “using” Light when she uses the cueball Scratch gives her. And “Exploit” is basically synonymous with the idea of “using” one’s aspect directly, as Active classes are said to do.

There’s way more examples than I can even count, but basically I think all of those verbs are too general. As for Protect, it falls under the Serve verb under the idea of “Service”, which can mean to help someone or to literally be in their service. Redglare is referenced as a civil servant in allegiance to the Subjugglators, for example.

Help is a concept strongly associated with Knights and Pages, and often in terms of providing protection. Jake “invites” Dirk to give him Heart through the form of a bodyguard doppleganger that is referenced as a butler, and the Brobot later literally Serves Jake his heart like a butler offering it up on a platter--giving it to him, which falls under the second definition of Serve.

The “Fight” verb also falls into Serve as it’s third interpretation, because to Serve someone can also mean to own them completely or kick their ass--Caliborn directly references this definition. “You got Served”, etc.

This, by the way, is a big reason I think Knights are Passive and Pages Active. Knights are invested in working hard to protect and Serve others, while Pages are more inclined to get others to Serve them--and that can be contentious on both ends given the “fight” association, but at their respective bests Knights are still predominantly working for the benefit of other people, while Pages are rallying others to work for their own benefit.

My favorite characters in Homestuck

In the following days we are going to celebrate the 10th anniversary of “Homestuck”. Although I became a fan in 2016, it was probably good for me, since it helped me read the entire comic without waiting months for another update (wouldn’t say the same thing about Hiveswap however).

So I was wondering to myself: “What am I going to before this very special day?” And the answer is … well you read the title of this post so…

Now to be fair, some of the Homestuck’s characters are received better or worse but there is no doubt that they are at least interesting, and in case of almost all of them, I can’t really hate them (except for GAME OVER Aranea, Post-Retcon Scorpio Loser and possibly Kankri; they just… suck). And to be honest, after reading a whole comic and months of thinking, I’ve come with four (actually five) that easily earn the spot of my favorite.

Now, you might ask why did I choose only four five characters? Simple, it’s because of one of my two rules in this list – one character per group. And this groups are:

1. Favorite Beta Kid

2. Favorite Post-Scratch Troll

3. Favorite Alpha Kid

4. Favorite Pre-Scratch Troll (this one is a tie)

As you can see, these are the groups and they exist because of my second rule: my favorite characters will be shown in order of the groups shown earlier.

Before we start the list, a little spoiler warning: all characters that will be shown on this list are girls. So without wasting everyone’s time, let’s get this list started!

FAVORITE BETA KID – JADE HARLEY

Well… I mean… J-just look at her!

I’m surprised that the universe didn’t collapse itself due to the singularity of adorableness that is Jade Harley. But mark my most words, just because she is one of the cutest characters in the media, it doesn’t fucking mean she will not kick your arse. In fact by the end of “Cascade” she’s so powerful that she can change sizes of a GODDAMN PLANETS like it was nothing. And to top that she manages to defeat Jack Noir (with help of PM) just by going into his way, and only because she doesn’t want him and Post Maiden to slaughter each other. How can you not love such a precious character?! Come on!

FAVORITE POST-SCRATCH TROLL – TEREZI PYROPE

Before I read “Homestuck” I didn’t really cared about the Zodiac sign I was born under, and even to this day (even through I’ve kind of warmed up to it) I basically think that it’s just a gimmick, an interesting and somewhat funny, but still a gimmick. But let me tell you, if someone had told me that one of the most awesome characters in the media was based on my Zodiac sign (mixed with Daredevil), I would have LOL’ed to death. And then I would have slammed my head on my desk for 413 seconds ‘cause I was a big dumbass. Terezi is a character that is as awesome as she is funny AKA a fucking lot! She is almost unkillable and even when she’s on the verge of death, she will die when she decides that she have fullfilled her duty. She is that cool!

And also a little bit of trivia for someone who doesn’t know: on my Extended Zodiac test I received this:

It makes myself even more proud that I’m from Libra.

FAVORITE ALPHA KID – ROXY LALONDE

Imagine Tony Stark, if he was a girl, was 16 years old and his alcoholism was created for shits and giggles. That is basically Roxy in the first three sub-acts. She is a gold mine of silliness. And she gets better in the next sub-acts (and sub-sub-acts). She gets probably the best character development and when she does something awesome, it’s not just your everyday, common awesomeness; the pure awesomeness from her scenes will make you shit your pants so much that you will fly like a rocket until you hit the Mars… I’m saying it now. Roxy is without a doubt THE best character in “Homestuck”, and nothing will change this opinion.

FAVORITE PRE-SCRATCH TROLL – ARANEA SERKET (BEFORE GAME OVER)/LATULA PYROPE

This is the case that even after hours of thinking, I wouldn’t decide which one is better.

In Latula’s case – She is designed to be the parody of those annoying 90’s kids that are trying as hard as fuck to be hip and kewl, but they end up childish and pathetic. But with Latula… I just can’t be mad at her. I actually like her. She’s like an older sister that I never had.

In Aranea’s case – Well, first of, she is one of the smartest characters in “Homestuck”. Those bigger than planets Cherubs? She knows many things about them. Backstory of the other Pre-Scratch Trolls? She will tell you and even PAY YOU if you listen to her.

Second… Jesus FUCK she’s beautiful. It’s probably her glasses (curse my legs turning into jelly when I see a cute lady with glasses).

Now to be fair, Aranea would have ended in this spot alone, if it hadn’t been sub-act 6 in which her IQ dropped 50-75 points. Since a tie between her and Latula.

CONCLUSION

If you are reading this, then congratulations! You’ve managed to read this three pages long post about my favorite characters from “Homestuck”. If I had to order the previously mentioned characters it would be:

4. Aranea/Latula

3. Jade

2. Terezi

And 1. Roxy

Some of you may be pissed of that I didn’t choose your favorite, but remember: this is my list. If you happened to not like at least one of those characters, it’s fine. Everyone have a different opinion.

Anyway folks, that’s all that I have for now. Let’s hope that we will receive something BIG on 4/13. After all, it’s “Homestuck’s” 10th anniversary, there has to be something big on this day. I don’t care if it’s Epilogue, Hiveswap’s 2nd act or something else. Just something.

Author’s introduction: An invitation.

This is a corollary post meant to connect to Love, Faith and Fantasy. Feel free to read it to understand my relationship with Dirkjake and reasons for writing to the fandom as I have been.

Before I get into the why of Dirkjake, if you’d indulge me, I’d like to get into the why of the framing of my initial post. If you don’t want to read this, just skip ahead to the next subtitle- ‘Knights and Pages - Servitude and Ownage’. Either way, if you’re going to be reading any part of this post, then from the bottom of my heart: Thank you. As I said, it was prompted by an instinct to correct what I viewed as a fandom perception of Jake that is erroneous, and in that specific post I feel that I overcorrected a little.

But that instinct was and is reflective of a wider problem that has pervaded the nature of my writing up until now. I have been doubtful and fearful in approaching fandom with my ideas--not because I don’t think my ideas have merit, but because I am keenly aware of the nature of the Dirk Strider abuse discourse and its history. I know how passionately people felt about it in the past, and I expected an amount of backlash or at least disinterest for the subject. I am happy to say I was let down there--everyone that has engaged with me so far has been delightful, kind, nuanced and insightful in their criticisms where they find them. Though I will say that like the beautiful trollsona Dirkjake commission @complete-bs-district was willing to do for me, the response to this series has followed an interesting trend.

There’s been more likes than reblogs on pretty much all of them.

I can’t really be sure, but to me this sort of speaks to the possibility that a not-insignificant number of the fanbase wants to consider these ideas whilst simultaneously being afraid or ashamed of doing so. In other words: I think there’s a chance Dirkjake as a ship carries far wider appeal than it would initially seem, and a lot of it is held back by confusion and insecurity. I want to bet on that possibility, and there’s only one real way to do that I can think of. And so here is my request:

I want you--all of you reading this--to choose to trust me. And if you’re willing, I’d like us to play a game of sorts.

I want to reopen the great debate on whether Dirk is abusive on my blog, with as much of the fandom as is willing to pay attention present and witnessing. This debate will include another subject: Whether it is canonical that Jake genuinely loves Dirk back for his own sake.

To be clear going forward, let me establish what kind of Player I am: I like bad art. I do not mind imperfections. If I thought Dirk was abusive I’d ship Dirkjake anyway under the understanding that they seem to have worked things out and figured out how to be healthy--which is still true! Their relationship was toxic for a while after all--though I would argue this was not entirely because of either of their flaws but rather because the outsize responsibility of handling Hal and his manipulation exacerbated and complicated those flaws to unsustainability.

But essentially, if I was proven wrong about this argument and someone convinced me Dirk was indeed abusive, it would be no skin off my back. I’d go on shipping it with a more sophisticated understanding of the story. Abuse apologism and white knighting is simply not why I’m raising this argument. I am raising it because I feel it is the most coherent reading of canon that explains the most about the story, and because the story contained within is one that is uplifting, empowering, and satisfying to me as an mlm, an abuse survivor (and this is something I’ve written about if you need my credentials), someone with mental health issues, and someone who just likes well-told stories about people with flaws who love each other anyway. I think it makes Dirk and Jake more fleshed out, complicated, satisfying characters. I think it makes their endings more satisfying for those of you disappointed with their execution. I think it makes the Alphas make more sense as a whole, and that it not only makes Homestuck a better story--but gives us more reason to be excited for Hiveswap, too. I will admit to the fact that I hope I’m right about this. I hope you find a story you genuinely love with all your heart here, too. I hope you find a story you believe in. I hope you find the story I see. And I hope you come away feeling it made your life better.

But part of what it means to believe in things is being willing to put what you believe in to the test, and that is what I am trying to do. I swear I am being genuine in my attempt to approach this, and I will stand by my word if I find I am convinced.

If you end up feeling the way I hope you will, though, all I’ll ask you to do is this: Reblog this post, so others can find it too. And then follow me. And pay attention. I invite anyone who feels differently, who finds themselves morally outraged, or who simply thinks I am incorrect to come send me asks or submit messages or write posts and tag me and talk to me about it.

Use the comic as your source and provide arguments that prove I am incorrect, and I will happily recant or adjust as necessary.

What I want is for us all to think critically. What I want is to determine the truth about the nature of this canon--not an objective truth, because that doesn’t exist, but a new truth that is at the very least more considered and well-informed than what we’ve had until now. Through the conversation I hope this begins, if such conversation is necessary, I hope you’ll be able to come to your own conclusions about the ultimate nature of this ship, and whether I am correct or if the currently culturally accepted reading of Dirk Strider and Jake English is.

Now that I have finished this lengthy preamble, let’s begin.
