#How Alcohol Affects the Brain - Effects Explained

Little headcanon out of nowhere about decommission.
It's always said that decommission wipes all memories about KND out. BUT! If people are able to being recommissioned, something tells me those memories are not canceled, but they're actually, let's say, hidden, muted, not accessible anymore. And when the recommission happens, they are allowed to come back. This would explain why some strong relationships like family or close friends do not disappear. Idk how decommission realizes what to hide exactly, how it can recognize KND memories specifically, so I go with the fact that ALL memories are muted up to that day.
This being said, I had this idea: what if adults getting EXTREMELY drunk or high somehow unlock those memories? Those conditions alter the brain functions, so it COULD be possible that somehow alcohol and drugs affect those memories as well and bring them back temporarily. Kids do not know about those substances, so they could have not predicted they could cause this side effect. Besides, no one really pays attention to what someone drunk or high talks about, they might just think it's random rambling.
I liked this idea, honestly.

Laughing Jack Headcanons!
I have so many things about this rewritten clown in my brain n' I don't think I've ever like Listed ALL the headcanons in one spot? individual posts but never a hoard of them, soo. Here's all on my mind rn but i've probably forgotten some! - He can't feel pain or temperature and struggles with texture. The best way to explain it is imagine wearing super thick work gloves all the time and trying to touch a cactus and then a fur pillow, only difference you're gonna feel is that you can push into the pillow. - He also can't sleep or smell, but he still yawns when he's exhausted and sneezes when there's visibly a lot of dust or whatever in the air. -Also he can't eat food or taste. If he tries, he'll throw it up along with black sludge after an hour or so. He can drink and feel the effects of alcohol, but it makes him fucking reek because he doesn't have any organs and it just kinda absorbs into his stuffing. - He's a huge kleptomaniac! He has entire tents in his carnival dedicated to shit he's stolen from people he's killed, but he keeps his favourite items in his trailer. -His skin is a combination of plastic and rubber, despite initially being made with fabric. There's a few parts on his body where left over seems are still visible. -The only part of his body that's white is his head and most of his torso, the rest has been stained black with a faint branch pattern connecting the colours together. -His makeup isn't makeup, it's just how he looks! And he hates it! -If he wears coloured clothes they'll eventually turn monochrome and won't regain colour. -Huge egomaniac! Part of his kelptomania fuels this as he hoards things that are rare/thought to not exist anymore -Only thing close to a friend he's ever had is his relationship with Zalgo and Will. -Doesn't remember how he came to be or why he loves violence. He sometimes dwells on it but not for too long or else he gets upset. -Holy items can tranquilize him/subdue him on prolonged physical and can send him into a state akin to sleep but with none of the benefits. Having a holy item nearby simply makes him mildly less agitated and a lot more tired. -He can turn into smoke and do mild shapeshifting, mainly changing sizes or stretching things by an impossible amount. -Extremely quick to anger -Loses track of the year a lot -Has no clue why he has such a familial bond with Will and struggles with it as all he's done for hundreds of years is be either an asshole or kill people, so his nice gestures and affection sometimes comes with implied threats
-Extremely overprotective and controlling of Will to the point Will doesn't feel like he has a life of his own [Will used to love it as a kid, but now he's in his mid 20's/early 30's? Not so much] -Can use his pullstring as another limb, being able to grab things or life himself up with it. -Sometimes literally hangs around by cradling/hammocking himself with his pullstring

How do you think your top three New Vegas companions (or all if you want to) react to a courier admitting that they have chronic migraines from their head injury that chems can’t dull? (Arcade ready with a whole lecture on chem addiction and courier’s like ‘I just want my brain to stop screaming at me… Both kinds of literally :( )
I FEEL LIKE MY TOP 3 ARE SO BORING but they're also safe choices i think?? rex is definitely top 3 but i don't think he'd be a particularly interesting option, so i hope you don't mind arcade, boone and cass <3
//
New Vegas Companions React to a Courier with Chronic Migraines (Contains: Arcade Gannon, Boone and Cass)
Arcade Gannon We already know he's gonna be giving the courier a lecture on the effects of chem addiction, that goes without saying. He's been in Freeside long enough to see how addiction has affected others around him and he's actually grown to like the courier, so there's no way he's going to watch the same thing happen to them. He knows he can't stop the migraines altogether, but he's willing to be patient with the courier when they do come around and make sure his friend gets the best care possible. He'll likely suggest that the courier lets the Followers try and treat them, since that's probably the best medical care they could get, but if they don't want to go with that option, he won't push.
Craig Boone While his own issues with head pain are nothing compared to the courier's, Boone's suffered from his fair share of stress migraines, with everything that's happened in the past few years. He can sympathise better than the courier may expect and surprisingly enough, he's actually very understanding if Six needs more time to rest up or can't do something on a day where their migraines are worse than usual. He knows the pain and the idea of having to deal with that consistently is a terrifying thought to him, so he can't begin to imagine how the courier managed to keep it together for so long. Boon knows his presence alone can't stop the migraines, but he hopes that it's at least a comfort for the courier.
Cass Any headaches she's suffered from have always been cured by a bottle of whiskey to knock her out for the night, which is the first thing she suggests to Six. Although, when they explain that it's not just your average headache and not even chems are helping anymore, she realises it might take more than alcohol to ease the courier's pain. She finds it quit frustrating at first, when she wants to get back on the road and the courier can hardly lift their head off the ground, but she'd never voice her irritation - it's not like Six can help it. Over time, she becomes more understanding and used to the idea that some days, it's easier on the courier to take a break and try to rest up, she doesn't have the best bedside manner, but she tries to do what she can and it's the thought that counts.

Let's Talk about Xyrem.
Xyrem ("oral sodium oxybate" or the sodium salt of gamma-hydroxybutyrate) is used in the treatment of narcolepsy, as well as (sometimes) idiopathic hypersomnia. Even if you don't have narcolepsy or any related conditions, you may find this run-down interesting. Here's why:
Gamma-hydroxybutyrate is roofies. That's right. Date rape drug. Right here.
The drug is so tightly controlled that there is one pharmacy in all of the United States that can fill it. Doctors must be approved and participate in a special program to even prescribe it.
Nobody really knows how it works in the treatment of narcolepsy.
I was prescribed Xyrem quite some time ago - at this point, nearly a year back. It took six-plus months of insurance, doctor's office, and central pharmacy wrangling to get the drug to my door. The whole time, I wondered: what should I expect from Xyrem? How do I know if it's working? How do I know if it's not working? What's it like? Lists of side effects and contraindications are readily available online, but I couldn't find a single detailed testimonial. This bothered me.
I've been on Xyrem for about a month and a half now. Here's what I can tell you about it.
You have to wake up at night to take a drug that's meant to improve your sleep. Everybody I explained this to found it funny. The standard practice is to split your dose in two - to take one half at bed, and the other half two to four hours later. If you're on Jazz Pharmaceuticals brand Xyrem and not the generic, they send you a tiny little alarm clock with a light on it to facilitate this. I have never needed it.
It takes 3 weeks to titrate up to the "full" dose, which is also the maximum dose. From there, you can titrate back down to a lower dose if you're experiencing unpleasant side effects. I'm in the process of doing this myself.
It doesn't necessarily knock you out. From the way the drug is described, one might get the impression that the moment it kicks in, you're going to be unconscious. I didn't find this to be the case. Your mileage may vary; I don't always fall asleep at all on the first dose, but it does at least get me sleepy enough to fall asleep on the second.
You have an unusual amount of agency in how you take Xyrem. This surprised me, especially given how tightly controlled possession of this drug is. For example, I metabolize Xyrem really fast. If I take it in two doses, I will sleep a maximum of 6 hours. I take the same amount of medicine and split it into three doses instead to compensate for how fast I metabolize it. That way, I'm more likely to sleep about 8 hours. This isn't just accepted, it's encouraged. You can even take a bigger dose first and a smaller one second, or vice-versa. The only hard and fast rule is: do not go over the max dose.
If you take it with alcohol, or within 4-6 hours of alcohol, it could kill you. A lot of drugs warn you not to take them with alcohol. I cannot stress enough that if you have ignored that warning in the past: do not ignore it here. Do not. Xyrem is a powerful CNS depressant. Alcohol is a CNS depressant. It really can kill you.
It works(?) Like many drugs that act on the brain, nobody is really sure how Xyrem works. It doesn't affect the most common (known) cause of narcolepsy (a lack of orexin/hypocretin). It's theorized that the drug acts on GABA receptors in a way that "consolidates" the fragmented sleep architecture of narcolepsy.
Narcolepsy can be thought of as an autoimmune disorder of sleep architecture. The sleep architecture of a narcoleptic is irregular, both within itself and from night to night. People with narcolepsy tend to have less of the deep sleep stages than they should. Narcoleptics also have a high percentage of stage 1 (light) and REM sleep. It's theorized that excessive REM occurs because it is of poor quality/does not serve its intended function, so the brain spams REM in an attempt to compensate. A diagnostic trait of narcolepsy is the ability to enter REM within 8 minutes of falling asleep - if sleep architecture is normal, this does not occur. While not all people with narcolepsy have cataplexy, cataplexy itself is actually REM intrusion into waking life. The narcoleptic brain is that screwed up about REM. Xyrem appears to regulate shifts between sleep stages and reduce the nightly percentage of REM sleep. I used to dream nightly. Subjectively, I do not dream at all on Xyrem.
The only difference between Xyrem and Xywav is salt. A full 9g dose of Xyrem contains 1,640mg of sodium. The maximum sodium intake recommended by the American Heart Association is 2,300mg. One of the few things I saw said about Xyrem prior to taking it was that it was disgustingly salty. It is very, very salty. I don't mind it, though. I've seen it said that Xywav tastes much worse, but I can't attest to that.
Subjective experience
Xyrem comes Priority Air Mail in a sizable cardboard box. An adult with ID must be present to sign for it. The first month's prescription comes with a light-up alarm clock. This kit and all subsequent kits come with:
The medicine, in however many bottles are required
A number of syringes, marked with common doses
A number of pill bottles
You put water in the pill bottles. They tell you to put about 60ml, but as far as I can tell, this is to make the saltiness tolerable. I made a little game of this - I try to put the same amount of water in each pill bottle, gauged by nothing but sound. I've gotten pretty good at this. I have my nightly dose split 3 ways. After adding the drug to the water, I close each bottle and swirl it a bit. I don't know if this actually does anything.
Xyrem works best if you're already tired when you take it. Hilariously, I have ADHD in addition to narcolepsy. Nighttime sleepiness isn't a thing I Do naturally. Consequently, the first dose of Xyrem only puts me to sleep about half the time, and it takes a while even when it does. I know myself well enough to know that if I wait until I'm actually "sleep for the night" tired to take it, I might be up until 3 or 4 AM. Instead, I take the first dose at around 11 PM. Even if it doesn't put me to sleep, it DOES make me sleepy enough that the dose I take 2-3 hours later will definitely work.
I was very careful to set alarms the first week or so of taking Xyrem, but I've never needed them. For reasons that are unclear to me, I always wake up when Xyrem is fully metabolized. Without more Xyrem, there is no urge to go back to sleep. When I've run out of doses for the night, I'm up for the rest of the day. There's no napping.
Some people have pretty nasty side effects with Xyrem. Headache and nausea are the most common. I had both of those, once each. The headache lasted all day but was otherwise unremarkable; the nausea was genuinely awful. The only persistent side effect I have, is tremors.
While I was waiting for Xyrem, my sleep specialist put me on Adderall. Nobody would prescribe this for ADHD, but you'll do it for narcolepsy? Sure, whatever I'll take it. I mention this because I thought it was possible that Adderall was causing tremors. I ran a little experiment: I took Xyrem but no Adderall one day and still had tremors. I took Adderall, but no Xyrem the night before, and the tremors subsided. It's definitely the Xyrem. While this is a known possible side effect, I can't find any information on how or why Xyrem, a CNS depressant, would cause something that seems very much the opposite of a depressed central nervous system. I am currently titrating back down from the max dose in an attempt to see if a lower dose will mitigate the tremors. If that doesn't work, I'm not... entirely sure what to do. Xyrem is a weird drug. It's strange not to dream at all; it's strange to wake up twice a night and still get better sleep than I ever have. Executive function has improved considerably, given that both neurological issues that cause executive dysfunction are being treated. Still: the tremors are, I will not lie, distressing. Not as bad as they were on Wellbutrin, which I was forced to discontinue! But - disruptive and distressing, nonetheless. I'm hoping that the tremors will stop eventually, or that dose adjustment will help.
Overall: would recommend if you have narcolepsy. You wouldn't think that a drug that obligates you to wake up multiple times a night could improve your sleep! Well, bucko, if your sleep architecture is already so disordered that you have narcolepsy: it can.

Hi! For the ask game: 7, 11, 45, 50 and 72, please 💖💖💖
hello! again, sorry for taking so long to reply :( i'm very forgetful
- - - - - - - - - - - ♡ - - - - - - - - - - - ....................ask game - - - - - - - - - - - ♡ - - - - - - - - - - -
7. tell us about the plot of the first fanfic you ever wrote
uh, it was not a romantic story. it was actually about a serial killer and him struggling to hide his killings from his best friend x.x it was a very lackluster job, i must say, and i shan't even mention the fandom because it's embarrassing how awful it is x.x that said, i was ten so i suppose it was to be expected
11. what’s something neat you’ve learned while doing research for something you were writing? also, how much do you worry about doing research in general?
oh, um, i won't describe it because i don't want to bore everyone, but i recently learned the mechanism of action of amphotericin b :] i love reading wacky medical text and create my own little diagrams to explain how things work to myself~ (now, why was i researching a very abrasive antifungal medication that would've been used in the 80's for patients with an invasive infection that may or may not affect brain, heart, lungs and the circulatory system? don't worry about it. i totally don't have evil plans for the kids in the darkest eyes :] ) anyway, i like cementing my stories in reality so i do a lot of research. i have notebooks upon notebooks full of random research that i then use for worldbuilding.
45. name three of your favorite fanfic writers
uh, rn @smoosnoom, @wiseatom and @wheelerboi, but ask me again next week and i'll tell you three different names (i have like 20 favourite authors who take turns to infect my brain, okei? i'm not good with favourites >.<)
50. do you plan or do you write whatever comes to your mind?
a weird combination of both. i plan a lot and have defined guidelines for each chapter of each story, but when i start writing the characters often do whatever they like and i have to adjust the story around those changes (and then they do something new and i have to adjust again x.x)
72. what do you do if a scene gets too serious?
i just go with it. if the story calls for heavy topics, and i can justify the increasing seriousness of the situation in my head, then i feel i must honour that even if it wasn't the plan. obviously, i take a little while to make sure that all topics are handled adequately according to their severity (like mental health struggles), but i try not to shy away from heavy topics. for instance, in the darkest eyes, mike was only supposed to have a problem with smoking. and that can be a serious situation (my dad was an avid smoker, i've seen the effects), but i didn't plan for him to also have a problem with alcohol and his pain medication. it evolved naturally and i'm trying to make sure that i tackle it with the appropriate sensitivity. likewise, mike in the trees are growing restless is going through a lot and he develops very unhealthy coping mechanisms. more than anything, however, some of the struggles he will face are very dark within the context that he is a literal child so i'm trying to balance out those aspects with making sure that it's all justified in the universe and, in the more severe instances, that i don't describe too much when it's not necessary (for instance, i'm not going to graphically describe will's death all 47 times because there's no point in showing all that pain). just recently i was planning out stuff for my runaway au, but here is one, and mike (it's always him,,, i promise he's my favourite x.x) developed a mental struggle on his own and it makes perfect logical sense within his universe so now i must write him like that, as painful as i know it'll be :( so yeah, i try to handle these topics sensibly (which partially comes from my ability to sympathise with a lot of this stuff) but i never shy away from them.
hope this answered your curiosity~! :D

How Quickly Do Pregabalin Capsules Start Working?
Generally, short-working time lies in few days to a week after you start your treatment with the sustained-release capsules. Needless to say, the length of the mourning period can differ in every individual. It is a responsible thing to do to adhere the suggested instructions by healthcare provider and use pregabalin as directed.
Tumblr media
Pregabalin Medication has applications across a wide range of conditions encompassing neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, and some types of seizures. It works by affecting some chemicals in the brain that are associated with the potential of transmitting Pain Relief.
If you have any questions on how rapidly the drugs works for you, as well as if you face any symptoms of side effects, make sure you come out with it and talk to your health care professional. Such professionals will help you in managing any possible side effects; and adjust the therapy if you require to do it.
What is this medication?
PREGABALIN Dosage is an antinociceptive that is also known as neurapatin. It could be applied not only for seising prevention but also for seizure control in patients with epilepsy. It relaxes your body by calming exposed nerve pathways.
The nurse may explain that the medicine might be given for other reasons other than the ones she mentioned. Ask your physician or pharmacist if you need more information.
Tumblr media
What should I tell my care team before I take this medication?
Drug abuse or addiction
Heart failure
Kidney disease
Lung disease
Suicidal thoughts, plans or attempt
An unusual or allergic reaction to pregabalin, other medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives
Pregnant or trying to get pregnant
Breast-feeding
How should I use this medication?
Please ingest this medication when you have chilled a glass or two of water. Read and follow the instructions on the Medication label carefully. Take the amount prescribed daily, at the same time each day. It works best when taken on an empty stomach and the other choice is to take it with food. If, while taking it, it causes hunger pangs, swallow it with food. Continue letting it be until your care team tells you is no longer safe.
Tumblr media
When you get your prescriptions and refills, you will get a MedGuide from your pharmacist to educate you about your medications. So, make sure to take turns reading the instructions carefully they do so for the next time(s).
Talk to key members of your team about the use of this medication in children. Although the medication may be allowed since it is theoretically appropriate for babies in the age group of 1 month for some conditions, the concerns do apply.
Overdosage: If you presume you took an excessive dose of this medication, call a poison control or emergency room center straight away.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Show up for follow-up visits with the healthcare providers to check your progress. Ensure you do tell the nurses or other caregivers if symptoms get in the way of performing normal daily functions or if they become worse.
Do not stop either getting or taking this medication all of a sudden. For this reason, certain individuals may be violently allergic. Your health care team may ask you to properly taking your medication. On the other hand, the complete cessation of the medicine could be stopped via a gradual dose reduction in order to prevent any undesired side effects.
You're possible to start feeling tired or down. Don’t drive, have a strong involvement in machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know what the medication produces in you. To an older patient don’t stand up or sit up quickly so I say to you. These, in turn, play a significant role in shunning dizziness or fainting episodes. Potential Drug Interactions
Benazepril
Captopril
Enalapril
Fosinopril
Imidapril
Lisinopril
Metoclopramide (intranasal)
Olopatadine (intranasal)
Perindopril
Quinapril
Addictive Potential
The US follows the analgesic class called ‘Drug 5’ where Pregabalin is included, meaning it has a very low possibility of misuse. Though, from the other side, it can have an adverse effect and create some problems in other regions.
However, it does not posses the addictive potential like other drugs. Users of illicit drugs mostly take Lyrica(pregabalin) to boost the effects of heroin and other opioids. In a manner similar to how it has been traditionally used therapists, pregabalin will increase euphoric effects brought about by the use of illegal drugs.

Do People Get Emotional After Drinking - Fact Check!
Tumblr media
Drinking on social occasions is the norm that can increase the fun. It relaxes and encourages people to socialize better during social gatherings.
Too much alcohol can get anyone emotional and make people emotional. It makes women emotional and men more aggressive, bringing out the most vulnerable side of both genders. Does your judgment get emotionally clogged after drinking?
Are you that person who drinks and starts blabbering whatever comes to your head? If you’re addicted to alcohol, there are alcohol addiction treatment near me in Patna, Dr. Vivek Pratap Singh.
Why do i feel sad after drinking alcohol?
After binge drinking alcohol, the person feels relaxed and happy at first.
But, alcohol is a depressant that depresses the central nervous system and affects the natural hormones like serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin that explains the happiness when one is drinking and gloominess, anxiety the next day.
The crying drunk psychology depends on people’s emotions getting disrupted because of alcohol affecting the hormonal system. Increased release of these hormones can make a person emotional and hence make them cry.
Why does alcohol make you feel bad the next day?
Alcohol affects rational thinking and behavior, that can also influence mood, judgment, and lessen inhibitions. Emotional drunk meaning alcohol affects the levels of dopamine making people more confident and reduces fear.
While for some people, it can make them think about things that they are upset about like a recent break up, recent loss of job, failing an exam.
These events can make them take drastic steps when intoxicated because of alcohol affecting their level of judgment. That’s the reason when people are drunk they tend to do things that they normally wouldn’t do.
Why do I get emotional after drinking?
Youngsters relate drinking with partying and fun. But, uncontrolled drinking can result in depression, anxiety, panic and other outcomes. Drinking is often always associated with emotional vulnerabilities in people.
When a person keeps drinking to avoid facing their issues they can reach a point they will get prone to heightened sensitivity to situations and events. They wouldn’t know how to deal with life without the help of alcohol.
As mentioned above, alcohol tends to work on the hormones and disrupt brain chemistry.
This causes people to get emotional after they drink. Usually, it is women that are more prone to being emotional.
It causes dugaregulated emotions with severe mood swings switching like a pendulum.
In women, self-loathing after drinking is a complex emotion they face in the light of their bad decisions arising from drinking heavily. Drinking has widespread consequences on mental health from difficulty waking up to impaired memory.
How to get rid of bad feeling after drunk?
Alcoholism affects a lot of organs in the body, but mainly it affects the brain. It can elevate the mood and fill the brain with depressive thoughts when the effect wears off. To get rid of bad feeling,
Control the intake of alcohol. Alcohol is the reason people go through a wide range of emotions and mood swings. Consuming alcohol that won’t cause intoxication or a hangover can be one way to deal with it.
Recognize the triggers that lead to drinking. Try and avoid the triggers that will make you want to drink.
Come up with healthy coping strategies and techniques that can help one regulate the emotions.
How to deal with an emotional drunk?
Drunk people deal with emotions differently. Alcohol makes them feel more deeply and with less inhibitions.
People can make rash decisions like drunk dialing their ex, getting into brawl fights, or unable to control what comes out of their mouth.
Emotionally drunk people need something to control their behavior. They can be given
Curd
Lemon
Water
These substances can help wear off the alcohol effects. Once the person comes out of a drunken state, they would feel better.
The most effective way is knowing how much alcohol can get you drunk, and limiting the intake.
Alcoholism can change a person’s behavior and mood. It will be difficult for them to quit alcohol and deal with its after effects. So, there are rehabilitation centers in Patna, Dr. Vivek Pratap Singh that can help deal with these issues.

#JamesDonaldson On #MentalHealth - 10 Things To Know About How #SocialMedia Affects #Teens' Brains
Tumblr media
Cory Turner Tracy J. Lee for NPR If you or someone you know may be considering #suicide, contact the #988Suicide&CrisisLifeline by dialing or texting 9-8-8. The statistics are sobering. Nearly 1 in 3 #teen #girls report having seriously considered #suicide in the past year. One in 5 #teens identifying as #LGBTQ+ say they attempted #suicide in that time. Between 2009 and 2019, #depression rates doubled for all #teens. And that was before the #COVID-19 #pandemic. The question is: Why now? "Our brains, our bodies, and our society have been evolving together to shape human development for millennia. ... Within the last 20 years, the advent of portable technology and #socialmedia platforms changing what took 60,000 years to evolve," Mitch Prinstein, the chief science officer at the #AmericanPsychologicalAssociation (#APA), told the Senate Judiciary Committee this week. "We are just beginning to understand how this may impact youth development." #James Donaldson notes:Welcome to the “next chapter” of my life… being a voice and an advocate for #mentalhealthawarenessandsuicideprevention, especially pertaining to our younger generation of students and student-athletes.Getting men to speak up and reach out for help and assistance is one of my passions. Us men need to not suffer in silence or drown our sorrows in alcohol, hang out at bars and strip joints, or get involved with drug use.Having gone through a recent bout of #depression and #suicidalthoughts myself, I realize now, that I can make a huge difference in the lives of so many by sharing my story, and by sharing various resources I come across as I work in this space.  #http://bit.ly/JamesMentalHealthArticleFind out more about the work I do on my 501c3 non-profit foundationwebsite www.yourgiftoflife.org Order your copy of James Donaldson's latest book,#CelebratingYourGiftofLife: From The Verge of Suicide to a Life of Purpose and Joy www.celebratingyourgiftoflife.com Prinstein's 22-page testimony, along with dozens of useful footnotes, offers some much-needed clarity about the role #socialmedia may play in contributing to this teen #mentalhealthcrisis. For you busy #parents, #caregivers and educators out there, we've distilled it down to 10 useful takeaways: 1. Social interaction is key to every child's growth and development. Humans are social creatures, and we learn through social interaction. In fact, said Prinstein, "numerous studies have revealed that children's interactions with peers have enduring effects on their occupational status, salary, relationship success, emotional development, #mentalhealth, and even on physical health and mortality over 40 years later. These effects are stronger than the effects of children's IQ, socioeconomic status and educational attainment." This helps explain why #socialmedia platforms have grown so big in a relatively short period of time. But is the kind of social interaction they offer healthy? 2. #Socialmedia platforms often traffic in the wrong kind of social interaction. What's the right kind, you ask? According to Prinstein, it's interactions and relationship-building "characterized by support, emotional intimacy, disclosure, positive regard, reliable alliance (e.g., 'having each other's backs') and trust." The problem is, #socialmedia platforms often (though not always) emphasize metrics over the humans behind the "likes" and "followers," which can lead #teens to simply post things about themselves, true or not, that they hope will draw the most attention. And these cycles, Prinstein warned, "create the exact opposite qualities needed for successful and adaptive relationships (i.e., disingenuous, anonymous, depersonalized). In other words, #socialmedia offers the 'empty calories of social interaction,' that appear to help satiate our biological and psychological needs, but do not contain any of the healthy ingredients necessary to reap benefits." In fact, research has found that #socialmedia can actually make some #teens feel lonelier 3. It's not all bad. The APA's chief science officer also made clear that #socialmedia and the study of it are both too young to arrive at many conclusions with absolute certainty. In fact, when used properly, #socialmedia can feed teens' need for social connection in healthy ways. "Research suggests that young people form and maintain friendships online. These relationships often afford opportunities to interact with a more diverse peer group than offline, and the relationships are close and meaningful and provide important support to youth in times of #stress." What's more, Prinstein pointed out, for many marginalized #teens, "digital platforms provide an important space for self-discovery and expression" and can help them forge meaningful relationships that may buffer and protect them from the effects of #stress. 4. #Adolescence is a "developmentally vulnerable period" when #teens crave social rewards, but don't have the ability to restrain themselves. That's because, as #children enter puberty, the areas of the brain "associated with our craving for 'social rewards,' such as visibility, attention and positive feedback from peers" tend to develop well before the bits of the brain "involved in our ability to inhibit our #behavior, and resist temptations," Prinstein said. #Socialmedia platforms that reward #teens with "likes" and new "followers" can trigger and feed that craving. 5. "Likes" can make bad #behavior look good. Hollywood has long grappled with groups of #parents who worry that violent or overly sexualized movies can have a negative effect on #teen #behavior. Well, similar fears about #teens witnessing bad #behavior on #socialmedia might be well-founded. But it's complicated. Check this out: How to talk — and listen — to a #teen with #mentalhealthstruggles "Research examining #adolescents' brains while on a simulated #socialmedia site, for example, revealed that when exposed to illegal, dangerous imagery, activation of the prefrontal cortex was observed suggesting healthy inhibition towards maladaptive #behaviors," Prinstein told lawmakers. So, that's good. The prefrontal cortex helps us make smart (and safe) decisions. Hooray for the prefrontal cortex! Here's the problem. When teens viewed these same illegal and/or dangerous #behaviors on #socialmedia alongside icons suggesting the negative content had been "liked" by others, the part of the brain that keeps us safe stopped working as well, Prinstein said, "suggesting that the 'likes' may reduce youths' inhibition (i.e., perhaps increasing their proclivity) toward dangerous and illegal #behavior." In other words, bad #behavior feels bad — until other people start liking it. 6. #Socialmedia can also make "psychologically disordered #behavior" look good. Prinstein spoke specifically about websites or online accounts that promote disordered-eating #behaviors and nonsuicidal #self-injury, like #self-cutting. "Research indicates that this content has proliferated on #socialmedia sites, not only depicting these #behaviors, but teaching young people how to engage in , how to conceal these #behaviors from #adults, actively encouraging users to engage in these #behaviors, and socially sanctioning those who express a desire for less risky #behavior." 7. Extreme #socialmedia use can look a lot like addiction. "Regions of the brain activated by #socialmedia-use overlap considerably with the regions involved in addictions to illegal and dangerous substances," Prinstein told lawmakers. He cited a litany of research that says excessive #socialmedia use in #teens often manifests some of the same symptoms of more traditional addictions, in part because teen brains just don't have the kind of self-control toolbox that #adults do. 8. The threat of online #bullying is real. Prinstein warned lawmakers that "victimization, harassment, and discrimination against #racial, #ethnic, #gender and #sexualminorities is frequent online and often targeted at young people. #LGBTQ+ #youth experience a heightened level of #bullying, threats and #self-harm on #socialmedia." More LOLs, Fewer Zzzs: Teens May Be Losing #Sleep Over #SocialMedia And online #bullying can take a terrible physical toll, Prinstein said: "Brain scans of #adults and #youths reveal that online harassment activates the same regions of the brain that respond to physical pain and trigger a cascade of reactions that replicate physical assault and create physical and #mentalhealth damage." According to the #CentersforDiseaseControlandPrevention, "#youth who report any involvement with #bullying #behavior are more likely to report high levels of #suicide-related #behavior than #youth who do not report any involvement with #bullying #behavior." Earlier this month, a 14-year-old New Jersey #girl took her own life after she was attacked by fellow #students at #school and a video of the assault was posted on #socialmedia. 9. It's hard not to compare yourself to what you see in #socialmedia. Even #adults feel it. We go onto #socialmedia sites and compare ourselves to everyone else out there, from the sunsets in our vacation pics to our waistlines – but especially our waistlines and how we look, or feel we should look, based on who's getting "likes" and who's not. For #teens, the impacts of such comparisons can be amplified. "Psychological science demonstrates that exposure to this online content is associated with lower #self-image and distorted body perceptions among young people. This exposure creates strong risk factors for #eatingdisorders, unhealthy weight-management #behaviors, and #depression," Prinstein testified. 10. #Sleep is more important than those "likes." Research suggests more than half of #adolescents are on screens right before bedtime, and that can keep them from getting the sleep they need. Not only is poor sleep linked to all sorts of downsides, including poor #mentalhealth symptoms, poor performance in #school and trouble regulating #stress, Prinstein said, but "inconsistent sleep schedules are associated with changes in structural brain development in #adolescent years. In other words, youths' preoccupation with technology and #socialmedia may deleteriously affect the size of their brains." Read the full article

Addiction and the Brain: How Drugs Affect the Brain and Cause Addiction, Explained by Stuart of Banyan Treatment Center
Tumblr media
Drug and alcohol abuse is a growing problem in our society, and its effects do not only affect the individual. Recent research has shown that addiction affects the brain in very serious and lasting ways, even after the addiction has been treated. In this article, titled "Addiction and the Brain: How Drugs Affect the Brain", from The Banyan Treatment Center, we discuss the effects of drug and alcohol abuse on the brain. Drug and alcohol abuse affects many areas of the brain, but it has the most profound effect on the areas that are responsible for decision making, mood regulation, and motivation. The following are some of the ways addiction affects the brain:
Makes changes in the brain's reward system: In people who suffer from addiction, changes occur in the reward center of the brain which make it difficult for them to feel pleasure from anything else but the substance they are addicted to.
Alters the Brain's Stress Response: Addiction causes abnormalities in the brain's stress response which can lead to feelings of anxiety during periods of sobriety.
Affects Memory and Learning: When our brains are reliant on substances, our memory and learning abilities are greatly compromised.
These changes in the brain can lead to alterations in behavior, such as risky or self-destructive behavior, as well as cognitive deficits. It is difficult to break free from addiction, but it is essential to seek help from an accredited treatment center. At The Banyan Treatment Center, they provide comprehensive treatment for addiction that addresses underlying issues and the biological, psychological, and social aspects of substance abuse. Finding the appropriate support and guidance is vital for making it through the process of recovering from an addiction. Leona Valley Recovery Center, a leading drug rehabilitation center located in Los Angeles, offers comprehensive programs tailored to individuals seeking sobriety. Today, we will delve into the dark realities of fentanyl addiction and its profound effects on the brain and behavior. By explaining what’s going on with the opioid crisis, we hope to raise awareness and show how important it is to get help from a professional team of experts in a reputable drug rehab center.
Understanding Fentanyl Addiction and its Effects on the Brain and Behavior
Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic painkiller that has become a truly evil part of the drug abuse world. It is a drug that is very easy to get hooked on and can quickly lead people down a dangerous road. The impact of fentanyl on the brain is profound, rewiring neural pathways and hijacking the reward system. As the brain becomes dependent on the drug, behavioral changes start to manifest, affecting not only the individual but also their loved ones.
Statistics and Facts on the Fentanyl Crisis in the United States
Before getting into the details of fentanyl abuse, it’s important to understand how big the problem is. In the United States, there has been a fentanyl crisis that has killed a lot of people and destroyed many neighborhoods. Recent data shows that the number of deaths caused by fentanyl continues to grow, which is a major public health issue.  By understanding the gravity of the situation, we can better comprehend the urgency for effective interventions and treatment options.
How the Brain is Altered by Fentanyl Addiction
To comprehend the true impact of fentanyl on the brain, we must explore the intricate mechanisms at play. The drug binds to opioid receptors, flooding the brain with artificial pleasure signals. Over time, the brain adapts, becoming less responsive to natural rewards and creating a desperate need for fentanyl to experience any sense of pleasure. This cycle of dependence and craving fuels addiction and profoundly alters the brain’s chemistry and structure.
Fentanyl’s Impact on Behavior and Relationships
As fentanyl takes hold of an individual’s life, its destructive influence extends beyond the realm of brain chemistry. The behavioral changes brought about by addiction can strain relationships, erode trust, and isolate individuals from their support systems. The pursuit of obtaining and using fentanyl often becomes the sole focus, leading to neglect of responsibilities, declining performance at work or school, and engaging in risky behaviors. Understanding these dynamics is crucial in addressing the multifaceted impact of fentanyl addiction.

Is There A Connection Between Stress And The Menstrual Cycle?
Tumblr media
Marla Ahlgrimm says yes!
The menstrual cycle is a complex physiological process that occurs in women. It involves many hormone changes and physical symptoms. Stress is a part of life. It has a well-documented impact on our overall well-being. However, Marla Ahlgrimm says that many women are unaware of the intricate relationship between stress and the menstrual cycle. Today, we take a look at this sometimes turbulent dance and shed light on how stress can impact hormone balance and mental health.
An Overview Of The Menstrual Cycle
Marla Ahlgrimm says that it’s first important to understand that the menstrual cycle comes in phases. These are menstruation, follicular, ovulation, and luteal. Each phase is regulated by delicate interplay of hormones. Progesterone and estrogen are the biggest players. Any disruption in this hormone balance can boost the symptoms you may already feel and lead to irregular cycles, physical discomfort, and mood changes.
Stress And Hormone Regulation
Marla Ahlgrimm says that stress triggers the release of cortisol, which you may know as the stress hormone. Elevated levels of cortisol can then interfere with the hormone balance required to maintain a regular menstrual cycle. Stress disrupts the communication between the brain and the reproductive system, which can change the intensity, duration, and frequency of your period.
Chronic Stress In The Menstrual Cycle
We all experience stress from time to time. However, Marla Ahlgrimm says that some women experience chronic stress due to issues that range from financial worries to being perpetually busy. Unmanaged chronic stress can have major effects on the menstrual cycle. Prolonged exposure to cortisol can affect the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA), which controls reproductive hormone and cortisol production. This interruption can result in missed or infrequent periods.
Stress And PMS
If you’re one of the many women that experience premenstrual syndrome each month, Marla Ahlgrimm says it’s especially important to watch your levels of stress. Being overly anxious can exacerbate the symptoms of PMS, particularly bloating, irritability, fatigue, and mood swings.
Coping With Stress For A Healthy Menstrual Cycle
Marla Ahlgrimm notes that the vast majority of women will have a menstrual cycle from about their 13th birthday through their mid-to-late 40s. And while there is no way to mitigate stress completely in the decades in between, she says that there are strategies that can help. These include:
Practicing stress management techniques. Marla Ahlgrimm explains that activities, such as yoga, meditation, and mindfulness, can help to reduce stress each day.
Regular exercise. Physical activity works to alleviate stress and promote a healthy hormone balance. Exercise further triggers the release of dopamine, which can inject a bit of hormonal happiness in times of need.
Sleep more. Many women get six or fewer hours of sleep each night, says Marla Ahlgrimm. But we need at least seven -- eight is ideal -- for our bodies to fully heal and regulate overnight. Marla Ahlgrimm says we must recognize how quality sleep affects our overall well-being.
Eat well. A balanced diet can help you achieve balanced hormone levels throughout the month. Marla Ahlgrimm says that, in addition to eating well and staying hydrated, women experiencing stress should limit caffeine and alcohol intake.
Stress is a part of life, but it does not have to be one that takes a major toll on your hormone health, says Marla Ahlgrimm. By understanding how your mental state affects the physical, you empower yourself to make changes that help you settle your mind so that you can enjoy a healthy body.

The Neurobiology of Addiction: Uncovering the Complexities Behind Substance Abuse and Mental Health Issues
Tumblr media
While the world of addiction continues to evolve, so too does our understanding of the various psychological and biological components involved. In the article The Neurobiology of Addiction, Banyan Treatment Center expertly explains the intricate neurobiological elements that often lead to addict behavior.
To begin, Banyan dives into the concept of reward circuitry — the system responsible for creating a desire for a particular behavior and reinforcing its repetition. Many addictions are formed due to an overactive reward system, providing happier neurochemical reactions than to experienced in normal life. Banyan explains that two key areas of the brain — the ventral tegmental area and the nucleus accumbens — are mainly responsible for this and that these can be significantly altered by drug or alcohol use.
From there, Banyan outlines the way certain drugs, like cocaine or opioid-based narcotics, can hijack the reward circuitry and further confuse the neurons in the brain. This reaction is oftentimes further amplified when combined with other substances. The article also explains how this often provides a sense of euphoria, but it is important to remember that these effects can be short-lived, leading to further prolonged drug use.
With a new understanding of the actual neurobiology of addiction, healthcare professionals can more effectively combat abuse among patients. In order to achieve long-term success, it's essential to recognize the precise fault lines in the Reward System, and properly address the individual’s underlying leads to addiction. At Banyan Treatment Center, our experts are dedicated to ensuring every patient receives the most effective, personalized treatment available.
To learn more about the terrible and life-altering consequences of addiction, check out these key points from Banyan Treatment Center’s article on The Neurobiology of Addiction:
The reward circuitry is the brain's system responsible for creating a desire for a behavior.
Addictions can easily be formed due to an overactive reward system.
Drugs and alcohol can hijack the reward circuitry and further confuse neurons.
Addiction treatment requires recognition of precise fault lines in the reward system.
While addictions are difficult to battle, understanding how they affect the brain on a fundamental level can help in the long run. Banyan Treatment Center is constantly striving to make sure every patient receives the best treatment possible.

Idk how to explain it but I love weed bc like… it’s given me a lot of epiphanies and changed my personality a thousand times over. Some of that has just been bad for me, scrambled my brain and made me crazier. But what hasn’t been bad is how it’s helped me get in touch with my body.
I’ve never actually done psychedelics, the only drugs I’ve done are tobacco, alcohol, kratom (hate it), laughing gas, and weed. But weed gives me a lot of the same effects I hear other people having with psychedelics, doesn’t seem to affect me the same way it does most people.
Smell related epiphanies I’ve had while high:
Humidity affects sense of smell and makes it stronger
It’s possible to smell when there’s more life in the air (after I smelled clean, misty air in the mountains)
Smell can be damaged by DDT, which I was exposed to as a child
Those are just for that sense. I’ve had so many realizations about my body on weed, and it’s pretty much the only reason I have any body awareness. I was traumatized and trained out of my body growing up, and it’s like I had to completely reconnect to my sensory system.
