In the Spirit World, roughly 400 years ago.
When you are just a little blue guy. But the greater gods found a liking in you. And then you ended up as chewtoy for Koh.
Spirit shenanegans at their finest.

Blue Spirit!Zuko: My hero
Kyoshi Warrior! Sokka: Would you mind giving your hero a name?
Zuko *playing dumb to avoid revealing himself*: Sure, I know lots of names. You don't have one?
Sokka: No, I do! It's Sokka! I just wanted to know yours.
Zuko: Um you can call me blue?
Sokka: That’s not what I meant and you know it
Zuko: *disappears into the rooftops*

@narrativelysignificantturtleduck's tags on this post
these tags are interesting, because what is it that sokka needs to hear, exactly? i think what he needed to be told from hakoda is simply “you are fundamentally important and your life has value because you are a human being. you do not need to be powerful or exceptional or to be worthy of existing. you deserve a full life regardless of how well you are able to conform to certain standards or prove yourself to others.” it is also what katara needs to hear, even if her dehumanization also involves her lionization. (as does aang, obviously.) but hakoda cannot say this to his children, because like his children, the genocide of their people is all he has ever known. the colonized subject cannot envision their right to exist as a given under a system that violently denies their humanity.
katara and sokka represent this struggle acutely: both are completely alone. katara is the last waterbender of her tribe, tasked with upholding the sacred heritage of her people; sokka is the last warrior of his tribe, tasked with providing for and protecting his people at all costs, at the cost of his own life. (and obviously aang’s isolation is defined by the very name of the show.) their struggles are, of course, a product of fn imperialism. they do not have the luxury of enjoying their own humanity, it has been robbed from them. “the southern raiders” helps katara understand her own humanity (by gaining a more nuanced picture of the stories she was told and told herself to survive), just as “the boiling rock” helps sokka understand his (at the very least, he learns that he is worthy of protection and support and that he is not alone), but as we know, this process of even beginning to accept their fullness of self beyond the colonial limits of their identities is a long and grueling road.
hakoda is of course not responsible for the dehumanization of his children, the fire nation is. he is also a victim of imperialism. and there is nothing he could have done differently to change the fact that katara is the last southern waterbender. but he is responsible for sokka internalizing the patriarchal logic that led to him adopting the role of sacrificial protector. he clearly thought that leaving sokka behind was the best way to keep his thirteen year old son safe from the fire nation, but sokka, who (correctly) assumed that it was only a matter of time before the fire nation returned to their shores, internalized that his father and all the other men of his tribe abandoned him to protect his people all by himself, expecting him to die for katara when the time came for it, just like his mother.

2 episodes in to Avatar: the last air bender live action and I kinda love it, it's not exact but still good.
Suki is amazing. I love the bending. Their's more emphasis on the past Avatar's which I like. The acting isn't horrible. I don't hate the changes so far, it's an adaptation it's not gonna be exact. My only icks are Zuko's scar not looking like a scar and I'm not a fan of how polished all the clothes look. they're great clothes it's just they look too new? Like they don't look broke in, they look off the shelf.
But overall it's better then the movie and that all I asked for.

#alright re: last reblog#first of all zuko is a massive bitch and i love him so much#second u know he was just like there is One person in the world that katara wants to murder more than me so let’s do that#so she can let it out And spare my ass <3#tHIRD ppl it’s not really surprising that zuzu is pro murder like#boy was supposed to inherit an imperialist empire and keep up an imperialist war#idk if ozai was the only one able to get the throne without going to battle once but iroh and lu ten were generals. led armies.#zuko was Fully prepared to take on that role too (see: the fateful war meeting)#he’s been raised with the yeah murder is a thing that you’ll have to do mindset#like he’s not a killer but he Would do it if the circumstances called for it#(sokka parallel btw)#does it make sense?#also like#he fully says that if he wasn’t such a firm believer in destiny he Could and Would have killed ozai on the day of the black sun#he says it to his face#this would be a fun au actually lmao like. the gaang bursting into the room and there’s just zuko there#next to ozai’s lightning fried corpse#like hello 🧍🏻‍♂️👋🏼 zuko here 😬🔥#and has to convince everyone he’s good and friendly now this is not an evil plan 🫶🏼#last thing but this reminds me#WHERE is that post that was like#sokka finds out zuko could have ended the war the day of the black sun but didn’t and just throttles him#<333#if you read all this ty i’m sorry i’m kissing u#send post

Since we’re talking about your trademarks I figured I’d offer that the first frame that comes to mind whenever I think of your art is the iconic
😮 sokka face. That emoji doesn’t perfectly describe it but that’s the best one. It’s the one I think from the turtle duck pond confession and it’s just the perfect shocked “omgomgomg what” face. I think you’ve used it in other ones too and it’s literally my favorite thing
It holds a high pedestal in my little Zukka heart
Tumblr media
😭😭ahhh thank you so much!!! honestly the idea that people think about my art in this capacity made me tear up. im so glad you like it!! pls. take this chibi sokka as thanks <3 [id in alt]
the actual face in question

i feel like the fandom only really talks about katara and being "motherly" (heavy quotes on that) in the context of why it's untrue and not a fundamental part of her personality, which is fair! but also can we talk about how 14 year old katara was doing most of the heavy lifting between her and sokka? and maybe even the entire swt? (which does make sense since it's made up of mostly elderly and young children) because it's canon that she washes and mends his clothing, among others ("I <even> wash all the clothes!", "I've been doing all the work around camp [...]") while he's "off playing soldier", and considering the fire nation had no reason to return to the swt after the last raid where kya dies, i'm assuming that he wasn't all too busy? i mean maybe he was off fighting a polar bear or something? but we need to talk about how she was pushed into responsibilities that she shouldn't have had to shoulder on her own at like, what? 10?

This has probably been done before but whatever!
Avatar The Last Airbender but Hama managed to get back to the Southern Water Tribe.
It took some time to perfect bloodbending enough to escape but better late than never. After a couple of days she stumbled across a small town. The people were kind. Fed her, gave her clothes and even had a job ready for when she regained her strength.
Disgusting. Their spices and seasoning made her throat burn much like the air in her recent prison. Shades of red all over her body just the lashes they gave her and her people. A job...HA, they'll work her until she sweats blood...
She hates that she can't look any of them in the eye. Hates how the mere yellow of the flowers reminds her of the gleeful expression the guards had when punishing her. She hates how her body flinches and quivers when a child uses her bending to light a candle.
Disgusting.
It takes 2 weeks until she's healthy enough. It takes another until the moon is full. She certainly won't be going hungry for quite some time on her journey home.
After years of travelling she's built up a reputation for herself. The Puppeteer. Most places think of her as a spirit or vengeful ghost. But the places she lingered at know better, even after all these years some of those towns still have curfews.
After years of travelling she's gotten even better at her craft. She hopes that by the time she get's back home there'll be few little benders running around for her to teach.
Finally she's back. The tribe is joyous when she returns. A miracle they proclaim. She's dressed in her missed furs and blues, fed meals she dreamed of and tried recreating but alas it could never beat the real thing. It's wonderful to see old and new faces but sadly there are no more benders...the good news is that Kanna has a son now!
Decades go by and finally a bender is born! Kanna's granddaughter. Finally she has someone to carry on her work, and so eagerly too! Little Katara simply can't wait to train with Auntie Hama.

Live Action Last Airbender really said in order to get rid of the sexism, some other sexism had to take its place but unlike Sokka learning sexism was bad, the new sexism is never addressed and treated like its okay.

What are your top ten favorite scenes in Avatar the Last Airbender?
Hello again!
Ok… so ummm… they are in no particular order:
1. The last Agni Kai of course: The music, colors, emotions, the rise of one sibling & fall of another. I adored the red vs blue & of course the whole ‘self sacrificing Zuko’ lol
2. “get out of the bisons mouth Sokka”: It was just so funny to me Zuko was already done with everyone shit and he JUST joined the gaang imagine if he has joined season 1 hahah.
3. Zuko swimming into the NWT: because like…. You fucking idiot.
4. Anytime aang went into the avatar state (esp in season 1): he was such a goofy child then he would start to glow & there was so much power inside him idk I thought it added to his character a lot and reminded people that this kid is the fucking avatar
4. “Come back when the good is on the outside too”: or however the quote goes when iroh came to get the gaangs help to save Zuko and Sokka once again was just like nahhh fuck that guy. (This also goes along with the Sokka wanting to leave Zuko to die in the snow - I just love he wasn’t having any of zukos shit)
5. Zukos gay fire breath and sokkas bi awakening: because for an early 2000s show that was hella gay
6. Zuko blue spiriting to save aang: it was moment I think I started to like Zuko haha.
7. When the gaang was training for the final battle with Ozai & they were all fighting together & at the end Sokka and Zuko were pretty much like you gotta kill the fire lord aang & Sokka sliced the melon head in half; (toph being the melon lord was epic too)
8. Sokka Ice dodging a bato: idk that was such an important moment for Sokka & he deserves to feel important and have a male figure invest time into him so hell yeah Bato.
9. It’s a tie between Sokka telling toph boomerang isn’t coming back & toph saying “that’s a lot of fire isn’t it?”: the seriousness of that scene and the way Sokka never stopped fighting & how he would have held onto toph as long as he could - it was such a powerful moment (& then of course Suki saved the day!!)
10. Last but not least the kyoshi warriors training with Suki whooping Sokka into shape! Suki is one of my favorites and she is both firm and gentle with Sokka which I think is fun! (& then Zuko comes to burn everything down and Sokka gets to fight with the uniform on haha!)
11. Because fuck it, any scene with Zuko & Jet interacting - it’s like two scenes, one when they kissed on the ferry, and then their major break up with swords. That’s how it happened don’t argue with me.
Thanks for the ask, I probably have some other favorites but this is what popped into my head hah.

I love how despite not being a bender, Sokka is the biggest embodiment of everything the Water Tribe values in the show, both good and bad.
Change. Sokka who humbled himself when the Kyoshi warriors proved him wrong and took their teachings to heart. Sokka who always had a plan, a few hundred backup plans, and could still get out of a sticky situation on the fly. Sokka whose friends became bored and aimless without his quick wit and initiative.
Kindness. Sokka who went to save Aang before Katara even had to ask him to. Sokka who saw the humanity in an old man from the fire nation. Sokka who gave Jet a second chance despite being the first one to be suspicious of him. Sokka who showed Zuko to his room and held no resentment against him. Sokka who shielded Toph from falling debris with his body.
Ingenuity. Sokka who invented airships and submarines. Sokka who took down the drill. Sokka who broke into a Fire Nation prison rig and out of the highest security prison in the country. Sokka who levelled Ozai’s entire sky fleet in one tactical manoeuvre.
Love. Sokka who couldn’t remember his mother’s face but carries the grief of her death so deeply that he protects every woman he meets with the same unhealthy hypervigilance. Sokka who instinctually jumps to defend his sister despite their constant bickering.
Community. Sokka who gave up his childhood to become the sole protector of his village and dedicated his time to training the younger boys in combat. Sokka who learned to let go of his hypervigilance and put his trust in the people he’a afraid of losing so they can protect him like he protects them. Sokka who stood alone guarding the gates of his home as Zuko’s ship towered over them.

well since requests are open i wanted to request a zuko fic?
zuko x waterbender reader in which someone from team avatar walks in on them kissing?
i feel like it’d be funny idk lol 😂
a/n: i love this trope it’s so funny. also it’s like subtly mentioned reader is a water bender since i didn’t wanna just shove it in there awkwardly. anyway hope you enjoy!
summary: a private moment between you and your boyfriend is interrupted by your unsuspecting friends
Tumblr media
“Are you sure no one saw you come in here?”
“Yes, I’m sure,” Zuko says with a huff after closing the flaps of your tent. “You know, I’m starting to think you’re embarrassed to be seen with me.”
“You know that’s not true,” you argue with a frown. “I just enjoy having some privacy. I know those guys are going to make a big deal about us being together, and I just want to enjoy our relationship without having to deal with any prying eyes.”
“I know,” he admits with a sigh. “I’m just tired of sneaking around. Do you know how difficult it is not to kiss you or check on you after a fight with my sister? It’s torture.”
“It’s just until the war is over. There’s a lot at stake right now, and it would be a weird time to come clean. It’ll be over before you know it.”
“I hope you’re right,” Zuko murmurs with a frown, one that immediately melts away at the feel of your arms wrapping around his midsection. It’s hard to be upset when you’re smiling up at him with the purest look of adoration in your eyes. Despite everything, all of his flaws and mistakes and cruelty, you love him, and it fuels the warmth inside of his heart knowing he has someone like you. Maybe he would have joined the Avatar and his friends sooner if he knew it would lead him to you.
“At least we’re finally alone,” he notes with a faint smile before leaning down to press his lips against your own in a long awaited kiss. He hasn’t been able to give or receive affection all day, and it isn’t until now with your chest pressed against his own that he’s finally able to truly feel relaxed.
Unfortunately, you’re both too engrossed in each other to notice the rustling of your tent flaps as Sokka and Toph let themselves in without a second thought.
“Hey, y/n, Toph and I are gonna head into town, do you want to- oh, gross!” He cries after catching Zuko and yourself mid lip lock.
You both jump at the intrusion, knocking your head together on accident and groaning in unison at the impact.
“Sokka!” You cry out in embarrassment. “Monkey feathers, don’t you knock?!”
“It’s a tent! There is no knocking!” He yells back defensively, equally as upset as you are. “I can’t believe you guys were kissing!”
“We weren’t kissing,” Zuko argues, his face red with embarrassment. “We were… hugging… with our… mouths?”
“Oh, spirits,” you groan, your palm hitting your forehead in embarrassment at Zuko’s horrible attempt at lying. For a Prince, he has a terrible way with words. You’d think all that time spent with his Uncle would make his vocabulary more eloquent.
“If Toph could see she’d be very upset right now!” Sokka scolds, but the girl beside him simply shrugs.
“Actually, this works out great for me. Katara owes me five gold pieces now,” she says with a grin.
“You guys knew they were dating and didn’t tell me?!” The water tribe boy says in offense.
“I had a hunch, but Katara disagreed, so we made a bet.”
“Enough already! This is mortifying enough as it is,” you groan impatiently. “Sokka, we’ll talk about this later. For now, I need both of you out!”
After getting the two to leave the tent, you shut it closed with an irritated sigh. You’re absolutely humiliated, and you don’t think you can show your face to your friends ever again.
“So much for keeping it a secret,” the fire bender mutters.
“You,” you say with an accusatory finger pointed at the Prince, “need to learn how to lie better.”
“I know,” he admits meekly, awkwardly scratching the back of his neck. Sighing, you open your water pouch and tend to the growing bump on his head from your previous collision. You can’t stay mad at him when he looks so flustered and sweet, so instead you merely throw your arms around his neck and pull him back in for another kiss.
You can focus on coming clean later. For now, you just want to enjoy your moment of peace with the boy you love.
