🍃🕊🍃 Dua’s for the Month of 🍃🕊🍃
🍃 Rajab ul Murrajab 🍃
🍃 The Holy Prophet (S) said, 🍃
“Rajab is the month for seeking forgiveness, so seek forgiveness from Allah (S)"
Imam Musa al-Kadhim (as) says
“Rajab is the name of a river in heaven, which is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. Whoever fasts in Rajab shall be able to drink from that river".
Giving Sadaqah (charity/alms) is also highly recommended.
🍃 Salaat Salman Farsi for 🍃
🍃 1st 15th & Last day of Month 🍃
Rajab marks the beginning of the spiritual season of every believer ending with the end of the fasting month of Ramadan with the Eid Al Fitr. These three months are unmatched in their importance. Praise be to the Almighty and thanks to Him for granting us yet another opportunity to cleanse ourselves of our sins and oversights.
The Holy Prophet (S) has said:
“Rajab is a great month of Allah, unmatched by any other month in the respect and significance (accorded to it); war with the infidels during this month is prohibited; Verily, Rajab is Allah’s month, Sha’aban my month and Ramadan the month of my Ummah; whosoever fasts a day in the month of Rajab will be granted the great reward of Ridwan (an angel in heaven); the wrath of Allah shall be distanced and a door of the Hell shall be closed.”
Fasting is one of the most recommended acts during this spiritual season. It becomes Wajib during the month of Ramadan, but is highly recommended during the months of Rajab and Sha’baan. As will be noted from the Hadith above and others to follow, fasting, be it for only one day during these months, is rewarded with untold bounties.
Salmaan Farsi narrates that the Final messenger of Allah (S) said that there is a day in the month of Rajab on which if a person fasts and does Qiyaamul Lail (night vigil ) on that night, he will receive rewards like a person who fasts for 100 years and does Qiyaamul Lail for nights of 100 years. This night is the night of the 27th (Rajab) and the day of the 27th (Rajab). This is the day on which Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) was appointed to Messengerhood, (Ghuniyatut Talibeen, Tarteeb Shareef page 781)
Imam Kazim (as) is reported to have said,
“Rajab is (the name of) a River in paradise that is whiter than milk & sweeter than honey. Allah will allow one to drink from this river if he fasts for even one day in this month. It is also a month of seeking forgiveness more than usual as Allah is forgiving & merciful during this month.”
The Greatness of the Month of Rajab Translated by Saleem Bhimji from the book
🍃 Al-Muraqabat 🍃
written by -
Ayatullah âajj Mirza Jawad Malik Tabrizi
(may Allah sanctify his soul)
🍃 This month is one of the noblest of months for the following reasons: 🍃
🍃 1. It is one of the Sacred Months (there are four of these in the Islamic calendar).
🍃 2. It is one of the months of Supplication and even during the period of Ignorance (before the coming of Islam) this was well known amongst the people and the Arabs of that time would always wait and anticipate the coming of this month so that they could supplicate and ask their needs.
🍃 3. This month is the month of Amir Al-Mo’minin `Ali ibn Abi talib (peace be upon him) just as it has been mentioned in the ahadith and as we are also told that the month of Sha`ban is the month of the Messenger of Allah (prayers be upon him and his family) and the Month of Ramadhan is the month of Allah (Glory and Greatness be to Him).
🍃 4. The first night of this month is one of the four nights in the year which it has been emphasized that we should stay awake in prayer and worship.
🍃 5. In relation to the 15th of this month, it has been mentioned that it is the most loved of days in the sight of Allah (Glory and Greatness be to Him) and it is the time when we should perform the action known as
“Istiftah”
🍃 6. The 27th of this month is the date when the official appointment of the Noble Prophet (prayers be upon him and his family) took place and it is the day when the mercy and blessings of Allah (Glory and Greatness be to Him) were physically manifested upon this Earth – something which this world has never seen from its inception until today.
🍃 This is a glimpse at some of the benefits of this month, as we do not possess the ability and capacity to fully understand and appreciate all of the greatness that is accompanied with this month. 🍃
One of the important things which must be observed in this month is to keep in mind the hadith “Malak Da’ee” which has been narrated from the Noble Prophet (prayers be upon him and his family).
The Noble Messenger of Allah (prayers be upon him and his family) has related that, “Allah the Most High has placed an Angel in the seventh heaven who is referred to as ‘Da’ee’. When the Month of Rajab approaches, this Angel repeats the following prayer every night until the morning time, ‘Congratulations to those who are busy in the glorification of Allah. Congratulations to those who are obeying the commands of Allah.’ Allah (Glory and Greatness be to Him) then replies, ‘I sit in the company of that person who sits in My Company, and I obey the commands of that person who obeys My Commands and I forgive that person who also forgives others. The month is My month and the servant is My servant and the mercy (shown) is My mercy. Whoever calls Me during this month, I will surely reply to him and whoever requests something from Me, I will surely grant that to him and whosoever requests guidance from Me, I will truly guide him. I have made this month as a link between Myself and My servants and whoever takes hold of this link will surely reach Me.”
It is shame when we reflect on our level of obedience to Allah!
Where are the people who would sincerely thank Allah (Glory and Greatness be to Him)?
Where are the people who are sincerely striving to reach Allah (Glory and Greatness be to Him)? Do those people who possess intelligence have the ability to understand the truth that is contained within this heavenly call? Why then is there no answer given to this call?
Where are those with a deep spiritual insight into Allah (Glory and Greatness be to Him) – those people who know that not a single other person amongst all of the creation has the ability to truly thank Allah (Glory and Greatness be to Him) for his blessings as they are able to?
Where are those people who have lapses and slips on their record that they would be able to answer this heavenly call and proclaim, ‘I have answered the call and am ready to assist You! Greetings upon you O’ beautiful caller towards Allah; O’ King of Kings; the Most Merciful of those who can show mercy; O’ Allah – the Most Patient and Generous; the Friend of those who feel contempt for their own souls; The One who possesses Great forgiveness; the one who will change our bad deeds into righteous actions!’
🍃 Salaat of Salman Farsi 🍃
(the noble companion)
🍃 Recite 3 times in the month of Rajab = First/Middle-15th/End of month last day) 🍃
Hadrat Salmaan narrates that the Beloved of Allah, Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) said "O Salmaan, there is no Mumin (True Believer) and Muminah (Truly Believing Female) who performs 30 Raka'ah in the month of Rajab ( 10 units on 1st, 10 units on 15th & 10 units last day) and in each Raka'ah recites Surah Al Faatihah once, Surah Al-Ikhlaas 3 times, and Surah Al Kafiroon 3 times that Allah does forgive them their sins and bestows rewards upon them as upon a person who has fasted a whole month. He becomes among those who will be steadfast in their salaat in the year which is to come. For him the deeds of the day is equal to that of the martyr. He will be raised with the Martyrs of the Holy Battle of Badr. For him is written for the fast of each day, one year's worship. His station is raised 1000 times higher.
If he fasts the entire month of Rajab and he performs this (Above) Salaat, Allah will give him salvation from the Hell Fire, make Waajib for him, His Paradise and bestow His Nearness upon him. Hadrat Jibreel informed me "O Muhammad this is the sign between you and the Mushrikeen (Polytheists) and the Munaafiqeen (Hypocrites) because the Munafiq does not perform this Salaat."
10 Raka'ah on the first of it (month of Rajab) and in each Raka'ah recite Surah Al-Faatihah once, Surah Al Ikhlaas thrice and Surah Al Kafiroon thrice and after you do your Salaam (at the end of each 2 units) raise your hands and say:
There is no god save Allah, alone without any partner. To him is the kingdom and to Him is all praise. He gives life and causes to diewhile He is Ever-living and never dies.In His hand is the goodand He has power over all things.
"There is no God but Allah, The One Who has no partners. To Him belongs all His kingdom and all the praise, Who created life and death and Who is Alive without Death. From His hands (only) good is done and Who has Power over everything.
The following invocation should be said thereafter:
O Allah: verily, none can ever divest him whom You decide to give;and none can ever give him whom You decide to deprive, and nothing can ever stop that which You decide.
allahumma la mani`a lima a`taytawa la mu`tiya lima mana`ta wa la yanfa`u dhaljadd minka aljadd
Dearest Allah, no one can stop what You bestow and no one can give what You prevent. There is no one who can profit us except You the August among all. "Then spread your hands over your face.
In the middle of the month 15 Rajab perform similar 10 Raka'ah and in each Raka'ah recite Surah Al Faatihah once, Surah Al Ikhlaas thrice, and Surah Al Kafiroon thrice and after you do your salaam (at the end of each 2 units) raise your hands towards the heavens and say:
لا إلهَ إلاّ اللّهُ وَحْدَهُ لا شَرِيكَ لَهُ،لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ،
يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ،وَهُوَ حَيٌّ لا يَمُوتُ،بِيَدِهِ الْخَيْرُ،وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ.
la ilaha illa allahu wahdahu la shareka lahu,
There is no god save Allah, alone without any partner.
lahu almulku wa lahu alhamdu,
To him is the kingdom and to Him is all praise.
yuhye wa yumetu,
He gives life and causes to die
wa huwa hayyun la yamutu,
while He is Ever-living and never dies.
biyadihi alkhayru
In His hand is the good
wa huwa `ala kull shay‘in qaderun.
and He has power over all things.
Then recite:-
The Lord Who is One, One and Only, Singular, and Besought by the all.
ilahan wahidan ahadan fardan samadan
He has betaken neither a wife nor a son.
lam yattakhidh sahibatan wa la waladan
Then spread your hands over your face
At the end of the month, similar 10 Raka'ah. In every Raka'ah recite Surah Al Faatihah one, Surah Al Ikhlaas thrice and Surah Al Kafiroon thrice. After you do your salaam, raise your hand towards the heaven and say:
لا إلهَ إلاّ اللّهُ وَحْدَهُ لا شَرِيكَ لَهُ،لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ،يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ،
وَهُوَ حَيٌّ لا يَمُوتُ،بِيَدِهِ الْخَيْرُ،وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ.
la ilaha illa allahu wahdahu la shareka lahu,
There is no god save Allah, alone without any partner.
lahu almulku wa lahu alhamdu,
To him is the kingdom and to Him is all praise.
yuhye wa yumetu,
He gives life and causes to die
wa huwa hayyun la yamutu,
while He is Ever-living and never dies.
biyadihi alkhayru
In His hand is the good
wa huwa `ala kull shay‘in qaderun.
and He has power over all things.
Then recite
May Allah send blessings upon Muhammad and upon his Family, the Immaculate.
wa salla allahu `ala muhammadin wa alihi alttahirena,
There is neither might nor power save with Allah, the Most High, the All-great.
And the blessing of Allah be upon the Master Muhammad and upon his pure progeny and there is no power greater than that of Allah Who is the Greatest in Might. Then, one should pass the hands over the face and submit his requests
Your Supplication will be accepted and Allah will create 70 trenches between you and the Hell fire, the distance between each trench will be like it is between Heaven and Earth and written for you will be freedom from Fire of Hell, and from crossing the Bridge of Siraat."
When the Prophet (S) had finished, I fell down in prostration, weeping out of gratitude towards Allah for the abundance of the rewards.
Note:~ Salat is in pairs of 2 Raka'ah, doing the salaam after each pair. This way we do 10 Raka'ah in 5 pairs and the supplication after the salaam of the fifth pair. Allah and his beloved know the best, (Ghuniyatut Talibeen, Tarteeb Shareef Page 756 - 770).
Istighfar. The Holy Prophet (S) has said, "Rajab is the month for seeking forgiveness, so seek forgiveness from Allah (swt)".
Sadaqah. Giving `Sadaqah' (charity/alms) is also highly recommended
🍃🕊🍃 FIRST NIGHT/DAY 🍃🕊🍃
The first night of this month is one of the four nights which we should stay awake in and this has been emphatically emphasized. One of the things which should be done on this night is to look for the new moon and to recite the appropriate supplication that has been mentioned in the hadith. It is also recommended that within this dua`, when we reach to the stage when we ask for help during the months of Sha`ban and Ramadhan that we recite this part with extra attention and when the time comes for this dua’, we should continuously recite it – repeating it often and frequently so that through this prayer and supplication, we can be completely ready to enter into those next two months.
It is also recommended that after Salatul `Isha that we should recite the various supplications mentioned in the book Iqbal. 3 in the book Iqbal, there are also various Salat that have been narrated for this first night of which the easiest of them which even the weakest person such as myself can perform has been mentioned which we also discuss here.
In a hadith it has been stated that the Prophet (prayers be upon him and his family) has said, “After the person performs the Salat of Maghrib on the first night of the Month of Rajab, he should perform 20 Rak`at of Salat in which in each Rak`at, he would recite Surah al-âamd and Surah Al-Ikhlas one time each and then offer the Salam at the end of the Salat (just like Salatul Fajr).” At this point the Prophet (prayers be upon him and his family) then mentioned, “Do you know the reward for this Salat?” His companions said, “Allah and His Messenger know better than we!” The Prophet (prayers be upon him and his family) replied to them, “The Trustworthy Spirit (Jibra`il) has taught me this Salat and – while lifting up his sleeves – said that the reward for this prayer is that a person, his family, his wealth and his children will all remain protected and will be saved from the punishments in the grave and they will also pass quickly over the Bridge without accountability of their actions.”
An even easier Salat has been mentioned by the Prophet (prayers be upon him and his family) and it is narrated that the Prophet (prayers be upon him and his family) said, “The person who performs a two Rak`at Salat in the first night of the month of Rajab after his Salatul `Isha and in the first Rak`at recites Surah al-Fatiha and Surah al-Inshirah and Surah al-Ikhlas three times and then in the second Rak`at recites Surah al-Hamd and Surah al-Inshirah, Surah al-Ikhlas and Surah Al-Falaq and Surah al-Nas one time each and then performs the rest of the Salat with the Tashahhud and Salam and then says “ la ilaha illa allah” 30 timese and then sends prayers upon the Prophet and his Family 30 times- all of his previous sins will be forgiven and he will be just as that person who was born from his mother’s womb with no sins on his record.”
The Salat that should be performed every night during this month and which has been mentioned in the book Iqbal and Al-Tuhfah and has been narrated from âalawani states: “The Messenger of Allah (prayers be upon him and his family) has said that, ‘Whoever performs 60 Rak`at of Salat in the month of Rajab such that every night he performs a two Rak`at Salat in which he recites Surah al-Fatiha once followed by Surah al-Kafirun three times and then Surah al-Ikhlas one time and then after the Salat is finished, he lifts his hands up and says:
“There is no creature or entity worthy of worship except for Allah, the One who has no partners. To Him belong the Dominion and to Him is all Praise, He gives live and He causes to die and he is the Everliving and will never die. the Dominion and to Him is all Praise, He gives live and He causes to die and he is the Everliving and will never die. nd He causes to die and he is the Everliving and will never die.
In His hands is all goodness and He has power over all things and to Him return all things and there is no strength or power except with Allah, the High, the Grand. O’ Allah! Send your prayers upon Muhammad and the Family of or power except with Allah, the High, the Grand. O’ Allah! Send your prayers upon Muhammad and the Family upon Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad – Muhammad ––– the Prophet, the Unlettered.” the Prophet, the Unlettered.” the Prophet, the Unlettered.” and after this prayer rubs his hands on his face, then Allah the Most High will accept his prayers and give him the reward as if he performed 60 accepted âajj and 60 accepted `Umrah.’”

Residency and after | Art & Culture | thenews.com.pk Being in a residency is perhaps not different from being at a university. At an institution of higher education, you are not expected to be a student for a limited duration, but a seeker of knowledge 24/7. Ideally, a graduating student lives on campus; spends hours in the library, attends lectures, seminars, conferences; discusses academic matters with fellow students; and produces a piece of research in close liaison with tutors, peers and the place. At an artists’ residency, the phenomenon is same, though details vary. Here, instead of a structured learning programme, a participant follows personal pace, private vision, and creates work in relation to other artists, organisers/curators, and the site. Universities and colleges around the world invite writers/artists in residence, a presence that benefits the person as well as students and fellow professionals. Recently displayed works from the Karbath Artist Residency Programme at the College of Art and Design, University of the Punjab, Lahore (February 16-26, 2021), reminded viewers of the connection between a seat of knowledge and a venue for artistic pursuit. Just the fact that it was founded by Dr Sumera Jawad, principal of the College of Art and Design, and included seven graduates from different art institutes, reaffirmed how the university and the residency, can both contribute in the development of a young person, by employing separate strategies. All seven participants (of its 3rd edition, called The Third Tide) stayed in Karbath (a locality with farm houses near Lahore) for two weeks, interacted with each other and with villagers, got inspired from living there and created works that responded to people and animals in the area. Each artist took a personal route to reach Karbath in his/her art. When an artist arrives at a new place, he/she does not get the outside reality as a combination of hard facts, scientific truths or statistical data, but treats it like a football ground with the opposite teams playing the same game. The subjective and the objective blended in a number of works from the Residency, including a mixed media on paper by Sohaina J Elia. Picking plants from the surroundings, she placed them with layers of multiple washes, printing, and sensitive drawings of leaves. What you see in the huge gallery space is a piece of land that has not gone through the concrete revolution, housing schemes and progress by the proliferation of tarmac, steel, pollution and noise. Another participant, Tehreem Saleem responded to nature differently. Talking about “quixotic body and fat shaming”, she depicted “women with bodies that don’t conform to societal prospects of thinness”. Being at Karbath allowed her “to stay connected with nature” thus in her works, inflated bodies, next to lines of leaves and branches, survived as ‘perfectly’ as the eternal nature. Marks, which mapped contours of flesh and outlines of vegetation in Saleem’s works, emerged poetic and hermeneutical in a large, long piece of paper by Isra Noman. The suspended scroll had small expressive, energetic, strokes in black and red, which like a Chinese painting – echoed a vast stretch of landscape. Drawn from memory; more from emotion, from “liberation and with vigour”. The ambitious scale and script-like handling of visual information, led to a walk through the twirl of the installed sheet; almost like taking turns in the alleys of Karbath. Saif Ali Siddiqui drew images of houses, tombs from a distant city, Bahawalpur. In a simplified and stylised manner, he created the lifeless scenario of a land. Javed Iqbal Mughal, rendered views of an imaginary scenario, the film world. In collaboration with his teacher, the cinema board artist Ustad Haji Ajmal, he painted manageable hoardings of a Lollywood movie, something that can be associated with the Residency site, since in small towns and villages you come across these advertisements of our entertainment industry. Another situation, where life takes a grim detour, was documented in Irtabatul Hassan Cheema’s work. In his stunning and heart wrenching video, Cheema recorded a dead dog amid some refuse swirling in a water passage. Even though the video installation was in a loop, each new contact with the body of the lifeless animal flipping in the dirty water sends to your spine unpleasant messages. The work convincingly, unearthed a different façade of ‘beautiful’ nature. Once you are removed from nature, nature haunts you. Fahim Tufail responded to nature with a formal clarity. He photographed scenes of Karbath, framed them in different sizes, covered them in bubble sheets, and on a few wrote addresses, directions. A customary visitor, initially, guessed that the works were still in their packing, till it dawned on them (or the artist or Amna Yaseen, the gallery curator told them) that this is the work. Tufail, a former student of textile design managed to convey a profound message using a simple material. Segments of nature, trees, waterways, fields, clouds, the bright sky were all ‘partially’ concealed in plastic, the material used for transporting art to other addresses. The work reminded us how nature is choked – the recent fog or smog in Lahore being an example – and blinded. It also hinted at the entire practice of using pastoral backdrop for the art elite of cities. The works, in their quixotic tone address the attitude of artists travelling to a rural place (Karbath in this instance, but several other residencies also prefer semi urban locations for various – practical reasons). These photographs, could also be understood as reminiscent of tourist snapshots of exotic lands. In a way, for an artist coming from Lahore, a village – even one located only a few kilometres from the centre of the city – is another country. Tufail’s idea to package them into an industrial material suggests how nature is parted, packed, and posted for various usages. It reminding viewers of a passage from Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel The Autumn of the Patriarch, in which the dictator sells a portion of the sea to a foreign power. Rising to a grand narrative of environmental crisis, Tufail’s work also comments upon the entire chain of production and consumption. Crops once grown in rural lands, are gathered and sent to cities to be consumed by citizen living in brick and mortar houses. The same way art work – a landscape – is produced, packaged and put at a gallery space far from its original site. How we look at this work, and how far we can see through the layers of plastic, is a question, posed by Fahim Tufail in particular, and Karbath Residency in general. The writer is an art   critic based in Lahore https://timespakistan.com/residency-and-after-art-culture-thenews-com-pk/11862/?wpwautoposter=1614542438

King Abdullah Petroleum Studies & Research Centre
KAPSARC, Riyadh Building Development, Saudi Arabian Architecture, Middle East
King Abdullah Petroleum Studies & Research Centre in Riyadh
5 Dec 2020
KAPSARC, Saudi Arabia
Design: ZHA
Location: Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
KAPSARC (King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Centre) is a non-profit institution for independent research into policies that contribute to the most effective use of energy to provide social wellbeing across the globe.
KAPSARC develops policies and economic frameworks that reduce the environmental impact and overall costs of energy supply and enable practical technology-based solutions to use energy more efficiently.Collaborating with international research centres, public policy organisations, worldwide government institutions and global industry, KAPSARC brings together leading experts from around the world to tackle energy challenges; freely sharing its knowledge, insights and analytical frameworks.
The 70,000 sqm KAPSARC campus incorporates five buildings: the Energy Knowledge Centre; the Energy Computer Centre; a Conference Centre with exhibition hall and 300-seat auditorium; a Research Library with archives for 100,000 volumes; and the Musalla, an inspirational place for prayer within the campus.
KAPSARC’s design has solid technical and environmental considerations at its heart, drawing the five elements of the campus into a unified whole.
ZHA’s first project to be awarded LEED Platinum certification by the US Green Building Council, the centre is designed in response to the environmental conditions of the Riyadh Plateau to minimise energy and resource consumption.
The primary organising strategy of the design is a cellular, partially modular system that integrates different departmental buildings as a single ensemble with interconnecting public spaces.
Hexagonal prismatic honeycomb structures use the least material to create a lattice of cells within a given volume. This structural and organisational principle determined KAPSARC’s composition as an amalgamation of crystalline forms that emerges from the desert landscape, evolving to best respond to the environmental conditions and internal programme requirements. The honeycomb grid is compressed towards its central axis as an extension of the natural wadi that runs to the west.
The modular design generates consistent organisational, spatial and structural strategies that drive all elements of the plan. The six sides of the hexagonal cells also offer greater opportunities for increased connectivity when compared to rectangular cells with only four sides.
KAPSARC’s five buildings differ in size and organisation to best suit their use. Each building is divided into its component functions and can be adapted to respond to changes in requirements or working methods. Additional cells can readily be introduced by extending KAPSARC’s honeycomb grid for future expansion of the research campus.
The buildings of the campus surround a large public courtyard shaded by canopies supported from a forest of crafted steel columns. Presenting a solid, protecting shell to the harsh sunlight from the south, the KAPSARC campus opens to north and west; encouraging prevailing winds from the north to cool the courtyard during temperate months and facilitating connections with any future expansion of the campus to the north, as well as creating connections with the researcher’s residential community to the west.
Privileging the pedestrian, each of the buildings within the campus is entered through this central public courtyard that also serves as a meeting space and link between buildings during temperate seasons. An underground link also connects the main buildings on the campus for use at the hottest times of the year.
With its strong, protective shell on the exterior that shields from the extremes in weather, KAPSARC’s architecture is porous within. Specific hexagonal cells strategically located within each building are left open to create a series of sheltered courtyards that bring softly-controlled daylight into the interior.
Orientated for the sun and wind conditions, the crystalline forms of the prismatic architectural cells gain in height towards the south, west, and east to shield internal spaces from direct sunlight, while the courtyards within are oriented to the north and northwest to bring indirect sunlight into the spaces below.
‘Wind-catchers’ integrated within the roof profiles on the southern sides of each courtyard catch the prevailing winds from the north, cooling each courtyard.
KAPSARC’s architecture promotes transparency and encourages an active exchange between researchers and visitors. By strategically off-setting floorplates, spatial layering effects are created throughout the centre to provide views to the floors above and below; offering transparency between floors in public areas designed as collective zones for researchers to meet informally and exchange ideas. Secure areas and rooms requiring privacy are located within areas of each building where floorplates overlap.
KAPSARC was awarded LEED Platinum certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) through its application of passive and active solutions including:

Sri Lanka urged not to violate fundamental rights in the name of combating terror
We the undersigned, who are from and live in the various nation-states of South Asia, express our deepest condolences to all those who have lost loved ones in the serial bomb blasts in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday. We express our solidarity with those working tirelessly to address the needs of the injured in the aftermath of this carnage and to sustain interfaith and community relationships. While we support all justice efforts that seek to hold the perpetrators of violence accountable, we also urge the Government of Sri Lanka to ensure that, in the name of combating terror and ensuring national security, fundamental human rights and dignity of all concerned are not violated.
We say this because in all our countries, investigations into terror and anti-terror legislation have been accompanied by consistent and continuing violation of civil and democratic rights. Furthermore, in the name of ensuring national security, successive governments in the region have sought to legitimise their various acts of impunity – directed against not only purported or possible suspects but entire sections of the civilian population. This has led to unaccountable loss of life and a steady erosion of democratic guarantees and institutions, including unaccounted for deaths and disappearances. We note with concern that media reports and remarks by state officials and political leaders in Sri Lanka have pointed to State inaction with respect to warnings by intelligence agencies about possible acts of terror. Such inaction and indifference, we regret to note, amounts to State complicity with the violence that subsequently unfolded. We are also concerned that the ‘owning up’ to these acts by the so-called ‘Islamic State’ (Daesh) might encourage Islamophobic attitudes and expressions, both on the part of the Sri Lankan Government and sections of civil society. Should this happen, Sri Lanka would be tragically drawn in to a familiar international discourse and practice to do with ‘Islamic terror’ with all the resultant tragedies, as we have witnessed across Asia. In a country that has barely recovered from decades of civil mistrust, war and violence, this cannot bode well for its sovereignty, civil peace and economic and social life. We wish to point out that the so-called war on ‘Islamic terror’ has resulted in large numbers of the Islamic faith being persecuted, both in their countries and across the world – and this sadly only enhances the appeal of those who seek to wage war in the name of Islam and what they perceive as Islamic concerns and interests. Thus is set in motion a cycle of violence that benefits no one but the arms trade and industries, and political powers that seek to establish their hegemony in the region at all costs. In this context: nWe support all struggles to ensure transparent and fair pursuit of justice for the victims of the blast. At the same time, we stand with those who are against undemocratic anti-terror laws in Sri Lanka, even if they are purportedly deployed for purposes of investigation and national security. nWe protest attempts to target or persecute those of the Islamic faith, in the name of countering terror, whether by the state or vigilante groups. nWe support Muslim communities in the region that have called for peace and are critical of voices from within that endorse extremist religious positions, which polarise everyday life and interactions, and vitiate meaningful dissent and dialogue. nWe affirm the resilience of diverse cultural and religious traditions in the region that have fostered longstanding habits of mutuality, trust and co-existence. We do not wish for the specificity of local beliefs and traditions, of all faiths, to be drawn into polarising global discourses of religious ‘unity’ and ‘singularity’ imposed from above. A little Note for the Senate on 5G
This season, there is so much in the plate that one is trying to develop the mastery to attempt a sorting. From the very depressing and heart-wrenching to the absolutely ludicrous and bizarre, but all fusing together to create a world that is so uncertain or, if you want to hover on the extreme, summarily nihilistic. The fear of COVID-19 continues to enjoy a convoluting spread and this could continue ad infinitum if something is not done urgently. Or so the Senate of the National Assembly must have thought last week when it mandated four committees to urgently look at a new technology that may have been maliciously accused lately of being complicit in the cause and spread of COVID-19. In spite of what they say about the overwhelming advantages and pervasive and pointed reach of the 5G technology, it has not enjoyed a rosy welcome into the global technology ecosystem. The decision of the Senate in respect of the Committees which include: Communications, Health, Science and Technology and ICT and Cyber Crime to carry out an inquisition on the status of rollout and safety of 5G technology in the country,is only perhaps the latest on the long queue of suspicion. The Senate’s position was in response to a motion raised by Senator Uche Ekwunife, PDP, Anambra Central. The committees have just four weeks to return to the Senate with their findings. This is a matter deserving of urgent attention as the life and safety of the people are at issue here. One’s immediate reaction would have been to dismiss their position as the response of some dodos and dinosaurs whose predilection may not be in consonance with the complex nature of 5G technology. That on its own would be an irresponsible mistake. As elected lawmakers of the land they have the protection of their offices to examine anything that catches their fancy. But, 5G is more than a fancy. 5G will rule our tomorrow and create a new culture for business and social interactions. However, I would appeal to the Senate to go beyond the resting place of that little human frailty called emotions and do a damn good job commensurate with the weight of importance they place on the life of the ordinary Nigerian who they want to protect. My little contribution arising from my fleeting odyssey in the precincts of the telecommunications industry is to submit some information concerning what is happening in other parts of the world and how they are dealing with their demons to position for a technology that has come to unleash some science fiction reality on our world. Is the fear of the Senate real? Yes. My position is not motivated by the mob mission of lynching an accused without reason or justification. Last week Thursday I was part of the over 700 participants from across the world who participated in a GITEX Global Virtual Webinar programme fortuitously titled: How Is 5G Creating Tomorrow’s Winners In These Uncertain Times. COVID-19 Economy COVID-19 ECONOMY: WHY NIGERIA MUST DEVELOP DIGITAL ECONOMY, INCREASE NATIONAL SAVINGS The bigger overarching question, however, was, Pole Position In The 5G Race: Where Do You Stand? Moderated from Jordan by Jawad Abbassi, Head of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) of GSMA, panellists were drawn from the Middle East, Europe, Asia and the Americas. At some point in the programme, a question was raised concerning health concerns and conspiracy theories over 5G. 57 per cent voted in the affirmative, saying that the concerns and the conspiracies were real, urging operators to do more sensitization on the safety of 5G. Quite clearly the Nigerian Senate is not alone in the journey it has embarked on except that distinguished members of the various committees must broaden their mind and be dispassionate enough to receive submissions from different stakeholders operating in the telecommunications industry. In this journey, there are low hanging opportunities, repository of industry knowledge that the Senate must take advantage of. They include but not limited to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the regulatory agency of the telecommunications industry, the Nigerian Society of Engineers, two operating bodies in the industry – ATCON and ALTON, GSMA, ITU, WHO, ICNIRP and a whole lot of other organizations. But are all the funny things we hear about the dangers of 5G and the harm the technology can do real? No. Here I speak mainly as one who does not want to go to bed at night with the bogey of a technology that could kill one in his sleep. Concerning COVID-19, this is what the International Commission On Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) said in April 2020: “It has been claimed that exposure to the electromagnetic fields (EMFs) generated by 5G devices can both cause COVID-19 and increase its severity. These claims are not supported by any evidence (not even extremely weak evidence), and the large body of scientific knowledge regarding EMFs relevance to 5G demonstrates that those claims are not feasible. EMF exposure to 5G devices does not cause COVID-19, nor does it have any effect on the disease process or health outcomes of those who are infected by the new coronavirus (SARS-COV-2) that causes COVID-19. As described by the WHO, you need to physically come into contact with the coronavirus to become infected by it, and as the EMFs from 5G cannot carry viruses, they cannot bring you into contact with the virus.” On the part of GSMA, “Twenty years of research should reassure people there are no established health risks from their mobile devices or 5G antennas,” GSM chief regulatory officer, John Giusti told the BBC on March 17, 2020, adding, however, that “while there is no evidence to support these claims, there are legitimate concerns about 5G.” It is noteworthy that while some countries are living in morbid fear and building all kinds of myths around 5G technology, resulting in the burning down of 5G base stations in the UK, quite a few others have decided very boldly to have a head start in deployment and enjoy all the advantages that accrue to such audacious investment decisions. Any advantage for having your leg in the pool first? A first-mover advantage for nations and Carriers? The poll provided the answer. 79 per cent attendees at the virtual conference voted in favour of advantage. Without doubt China and South Korea enjoy an overwhelming advantage in 5G connectivity. Some countries in Europe don’t want to be left behind although a whiff of conservatism is putting blinders on their part. Only recently President Donald Trump of the United States boasted that the 5G race was America’s race to win, stating very clearly that the United States was not prepared to tolerate any competition in that respect. Speaking early April, he said: “We cannot allow any other country to out-compete the United States in this powerful industry of the future.   We are leading by so much in so many different industries of that type, and we just can’t let that happen.   The race to 5G is a race America must win, and it’s a race, frankly, that our great companies are now involved in.   We’ve given them the incentive they need.   It’s a race that we will win.” Why are nations in a hurry to embrace 5G? Here are projections by GSMA Intelligence. By 2025 there will be 1.7bn connections broken down in the following order: North America – 214m, Europe – 228m, Asia Pacific – 1.039bn, Latin America – 50M, MENA – 47, and Sub Saharan Africa – 30m. The question is: Are the leaders in these countries so callous that they want to vaporize their people with dangerous technology? My take is an emphatic NO. The projection for Sub Saharan Africa doesn’t look good at all but will Nigeria feature in it? This is one question I will implore the Senate to tackle. Nations enjoying a clear lead in 5G deployment have attributed such growth to the vision of their governments and regulatory agencies. It happened in South Korea, Dubai – Smart City Dubai – in fact, Saleem Albooshi, Chief Technical Officer, DU, calls it clear direction top-down, from the leadership of the country; and Trump has recently demonstrated how leadership can mobilise an industry into action. At some point, these figures will translate to cash, new jobs and a very strong hold on the future of man. Very soon you will have to wear 5G on your skin. So where will the Senate stand; to mobilise the regulator, NCC, into bold action or yield to hysteria and paranoia? Whatever you do, dear Senators, remember this. History keeps record of the bold and the cowardly.
