An image that inspires joy (and sometimes jealousy) are these bindery tools. We make any excuse to see what conservation is up to, and learning about the tools they use is no exception. The well-loved book is their forte, and well we love books.
Another thing I love about our books: the idiosyncratic annotations made by centuries of readers. Someone apparently found these 16th century gymnasts quite indecent. #joyofGLAM GV213 .M55 1577 . . . #gymnastics #sports #censorship #freespeech #bannedbooks #marginalia #bibliophile #bookstagram #booklover #rarebooks #specialcollections #librariesofinstagram #iglibraries #mizzou #universityofmissouri #ellislibrary #ifttt
What brings us joy in the archives? This Pirelli poster from 1963 by Massimo Vignelli!
The pink version is in numerous museums and archives, but, sadly, we don’t have that version in the archives (featured here is a scan of a vintage 4x5 color copy transparency). But we do have that gorgeous yellow version in the archives! Don’t you just want to run outside and take a summer bike ride?
We can’t resist joining the fun of the #joyofGLAM. On instagram @rarebkcat and @rutgers_scua [Rutgers University Special Collections and University Archives] are challenging Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums (GLAMs) and fans of GLAMS to share something that brings them joy every Wednesday in July!

It should come as no surprise that bad jokes and puns bring us immense joy. We may be the only laughing at most of our jokes, but that's never dampenes our #joyofglam. It helps too, that we find hush puppies delicious. We’re joining @rutgers_scua and @rarebkcat for the July #JoyofGLAM challenge! We will be posting joy-inspiring images from our collection each Wednesday for the rest of the month.
To kick things off we’re sharing this video of a small portion of a recently acquired collection of publishers’ bindings featuring printed pattern book cloth. If you’ve been following us for awhile then you know that we love publishers’ bindings here at the Library Company, and seeing this new collection in the stacks every day always makes us smile.
This week we highlight the joy of finding the unexpected and the joy of naming our collections in the most literal way.
Ephemera reveals something about regular people in their historical context, what they wanted to remember, and how they interacted with the visual culture of their daily lives. When we process material and find a photograph or note tucked in between pages of a book, that item could be secret token in a hiding place, or it could be as utilitarian as a bookmark. Either way these are clues of history that many can relate to now. Have you ever hidden something in a book?

What brings us joy in the archives? These vintage color images of the Heller rainbow stacking dinnerware! Those colors! Those concentric circles! Bon appetit!
We have many photographs of Vignelli-designed products in the archives. Often we find the original shots for catalogs, publications, and other marketing purposes. But we haven’t seen these images used in any of the promotional materials!
This stacking melamine dinnerware was originally designed in Italy in 1964 and won the Compasso D’oro award. But the manufacturer went out of business and the molds lay dormant for a few years. But Heller brought them to the United States and they eventually created them in rainbow colors.
“The size of the plates, their edge wall concept, their stackability, and the brilliant rainbow colors quickly captured the consumers’ attention and the product became a symbol of contemporary houseware.” design: Vignelli (1981).

The big problem with this whole #JoyofGLAM thing is that every third book of ours is my favorite. On the other hand, every single book of ~hours~ is my favorite, including this lil one -- can you see the stitching? We think it once had a pocket sewn in, possibly for a relic.
