Pride and Prejudice
Classic and loose adaptions from 1940, 1967, 1980, 1995, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2012, 2016, 2018, 2019
The second of Jane Austen’s novels, first published in 1813, is the most often adapted, inspiring various different takes on it. The ones pictures above are detailed below:
Pride and Prejudice (1940 Film)
This black and white film departs from the original novel in some (or should I say many?) points
Written by Aldous Huxley and Jane Murfin, adapted from the stage adaptation by Helen Jerome; directed by Robert Z. Leonard
Starring Greer Garson as Elizabeth Bennet, Laurence Olivier as Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, Edward Ashley Cooper as George Wickham, Maureen O'Sullivan as Jane Bennet, Bruce Lester as Mr. Charles Bingley, Ann Rutherford as Lydia Bennet, Melville Cooper as Mr. William Collins, among others.
Pride and Prejudice (1967 Miniseries)
6 episodes x 24min. Black and White footage Written by Nemone Lethbridge, directed by Joan Craft

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries (2012–13 Webseries)

Created by Hank Green and Bernie Su, from Pemberley Digital
Starring Ashley Clements as Elizabeth Bennet, Daniel Vincent Gordh as William Darcy, Wes Aderhold as George Wickham, Laura Spencer as Jane Bennet, Christopher Sean as Bing Lee, Mary Kate Wiles as Lydia Bennet, Julia Cho as Charlotte Lu, Maxwell Glick as Ricky Collins, among others.
Lizzie’s videos amount to 100 episodes + 10 Q&A, but shorter series enrich the story by offering other characters’ perspectives, most notably Lydia’s (and also Georgiana’s). A playlist at Pemberley Digital’s Youtube channel features them all in order.
The series has also been adapted into a book, The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet (2014), and spawned a sequel novel, The Epic Adventures of Lydia Bennet (2015).
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016 Film)
Loose adaption inspired by the 2009 novel of the same name by Seth Grahame-Smith, which adds zombies to Austen’s original story. The movie makes alterations from the zombie book as well.

The story takes inspiration from all 6 of Austen’s major novels (plus Lady Susan), but mostly from Pride and Prejudice. Others stars include Chandelly Braz as Mariana Benedito (Marianne Dashwood) and Anajú Dorigon as Cecília Benedito (Catherine Morland).
Features 100 episodes in the International cut. The telenovela has been broadcast in other countries and languages (such as Spanish) but as far as I know, not in English.
Pride and Prejudice: Atlanta (2019 TV Film)
Loose adaption set in modern Atlanta, USA. All-black cast. Written by Tracy McMillan, directed by Rhonda Baraka
Starring Tiffany Hines as Elizabeth Bennet, Juan Antonio as Will Darcy, Raney Branch as Jane Bennet, Brad James as Charles Bingley, Reginae Carter as Lydia Bennet, Carl Anthony Payne as Rev. Collins, among others.
*****
Personal favorites: 2005, then 1995. But also: The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Orgulho e Paixão
I also enjoyed Atlanta and, while it’s been a while since I’ve seen Bride and Prejudice, it’s got Indian musical numbers so c’mon, one gotta watch it.
Back to the closer adaptions, despite its age, 1980 is also good! 1940 is...very different, but fun in its own way.
In fact, while I find some of these versions weaker, I could find enjoyment in all of them - but maybe that’s cause I’m a sucker for P&P.

Showdown 2k24 Nominations!
alright, redoing this post now that I can give a concrete start date of Monday the 15th of January!
Nominations for the tournament are open up until the start date, and you can submit anyone who could reasonable be considered a companion, either by sending me an ask or by filling out
this form.
If you make your nomination via the form you can also submit some propaganda to go alongside the poll. Anyone who was considered a regular at any point in the last year will automatically be included, as well as anyone who was in the original tournament (+/- a couple I might miss or misremember as being a regular because I don't have old lists anywhere). The exception to this is last years winner, Rose Tyler, she will not be getting a place in the main tournament, however after the final I will run a poll to see if our new winner can beat her. (oh and also maybe I'll leave the TARDIS out but not fully decided yet)
The tournament is going to be run in the same way I did @adventure-showdown, meaning I'll keep companions from different periods of the show and different mediums segregated at first so the nicher ones don't immediately get knocked out, and slowly get mingled together. The exact details are going to depend on just how may characters get included.
Errm yeah, so go wild, nominate whoever you like (as long as they are a companion). If they are from teh TV show they have to be on this list to qualify, and for EU companions I'm going with them needing a TARDIS wiki page, and also I will give them a quick proof read to make sure they pass, the bar is low but it is there
if you want to submit an alternate version of the character sorry but main version only unless you can give a really good reason, eg regenerations of a time lord
also, if they are primarily from another franchise that'll be a no
The full list of contestents is under the cut and will be updated as nominations come in. Its sorted by medium and then to be alphabetical by first name. if an eu companion exists in multiple mediums i just sort of picked one or I put them under the other category, people who exist in real life are also sorted into their own category. There are some characters under Classic Who/NuWho who were not companions on TV but were in the EU. Companions who's names are in green have had propaganda submitted for them, if they're not in green then they don't, and just because someone has propaganda doesn't mean i wont accept more

Pride & Prejudice (2005, Joe Wright)
10/12/2023
Pride & Prejudice is a 2005 film directed by Joe Wright, based on the novel of the same name by Jane Austen.
In the England of the late eighteenth-century, Mr. Bennet lives in his country house with his wife and their five daughters: the sweet Jane, the intelligent Elizabeth, the studious Mary, the immature Kitty and the wild Lydia.
At a ball given in their honor, Bingley, accompanied by his haughty sister Caroline and his friend Fitzwilliam Darcy, meets the Bennets and feels an immediate, reciprocated liking for the eldest daughter, Jane.
During her stay at Charlotte's house, Elizabeth and the Collins couple go to pay homage to Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Mr. Collins' patroness and a wealthy landowner.
Furthermore, Elizabeth discovers that Wickham had deluded the feelings of Georgiana, Darcy's sister, by trying to induce her to elope with him, in order to obtain a dowry from her brother, which Darcy had however refused.
Meanwhile, Lydia is invited to go to Brighton, where she will have the chance to spend a lot of time with the officers headquartered in the city.
The film's soundtrack is by Dario Marianelli. For the music written for this film the composer was nominated for an Oscar for best original soundtrack. The composer was inspired by the early works of Ludwig van Beethoven.

What’s wrong with pride and prejudice 😭? I’m not a fan or being defensive btw , I watched the movie and didn’t see the hype but I’m just curious about your opinion
It's a dumbed down version of the book with not just nuance removed but also basic character information and coherence, and just a lot of really annoying oversights:
In the book, the Bennet sisters are really well designed and balanced out to highlight each others' qualities. Jane and Elizabeth are kind and witty and beautiful, while Lydia and Kitty are unkind and irresponsible, and plain Mary tries to be witty but is instead unkind and sanctimonious. It also shows us a very interesting family dynamic where it is constantly implied how bad of a father Mr Bennet is, not bothering to raise his last three daughters, or do anything to solve their impending financial disaster upon his death. It also adds complexity to Mrs Bennet who being a stereotype of the ideal Regency woman also acts very pragmatically in her focus on her daughters' marriage with little support from her husband. This complexity is destroyed in the 2005 movie where Mary's character is obliterated and she just becomes a quiet beautiful girl, Wright also ruins Jane's and Elizabeth's relationship because he apparently felt the novel made their happy, confiding sisterhood "too syrupy".
All of the actors give such an exaggerated performance, there's no subtlety anywhere and it destroys and hides the crisp comedy and drama that Austen has already put in her writing. Mrs Bennet is an over the top character, but in the film everyone is shrieking and behaving ridiculously for no real reason as if they're afraid the audience won't understand the stakes otherwise. Characters dumbly congregate together to eavesdrop in a very sitcom-esque way.
Lady Catherine de Bourgh deciding to appear in the middle of the night, despite this being against her character and all social customs, safety and common sense, not advancing the plot of the film at all but somebody probably thought it was more dramatic.
The costumes were shit, at one point Caroline Bingley wears what's essentially a tank top dress and people had these like cotton headbands, the extras were downright laughable in the ball scenes.
It's really muddy and they made the Bennets too poor, living in a barnyard with no table manners, again because they couldn't trust the audience to understand what comparatively less wealthy upper middle class people would look like.
It just got rid of so much of Austen's wit and for what? I think most people who watched this version and loved it hadn't seen the far better 1995 mini series or read the book before.

2 of Cups ~ Bachus Tarot
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the Two of Cups, it’s not just another circumstance or idea that you have to work into a balance, it’s a whole other person. A person with his or her own needs, desires, and ideas. The act of collaboration can be inspiring, or it can drive people insane. Rather than the muse dynamic, where one person is doing all of the work and the other person just has to exist, here each person has to see the other as an equal. The Two of Cups is traditionally a marriage card; a wholly egalitarian relationship. When we put it into the artistic context, it becomes a collaboration where each partner feels that his or her ideas are being heard, and each person gets equal credit. Certainly throughout time there have been men who have taken credit for their wives’ work, like the painter Walter Keane, who claimed that he’d painted his wife Margaret’s paintings of big-eyed children, which were a runaway success in the 1950s and ’60s. But with the Two of Cups, mutual respect is required. Collaboration has led to important work, such as the Wright Brothers’ experiments in flight, or Dutch fashion designers Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren cocreating the successful and influential fashion house Viktor & Rolf. The performance artists Marina Abramović and Ulay were lovers as well as collaborators, and much of their work together explored what it is like for two people to become a single unit. Their androgynous and unified work, like their performance Relation in Time—where they sat back-to-back for seventeen hours, their long hair knotted together—expressed this idea of equality to the point where it was sometimes difficult to tell the two apart. The Two of Cups does not need to imply romance. There have certainly been many actor-and-director film collaborations that embody the Two of Cups dynamic, such as Michael Fassbender’s three films with director Steve McQueen, and Catherine Keener’s work with director Nicole Holofcener. But it does require respect, mutual admiration, and a level playing field. The Two of Cups asks you to take on another person and to allow him or her to work with you rather than for you. RECOMMENDED MATERIALS Rest Energy, short film (part of a series) by Marina Abramović and Ulay My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, recording by Brian Eno and David Byrne Hunger, film directed by Steve McQueen Radioactive: Marie & Pierre Curie, book by Lauren Redniss The Creative Tarot. Jessa Crispin
