Hand-drawn story-driven adventure game Vivarium announced

A currently unnamed studio that consists of creator Michael Nowak and collaborator Trent Garlipp (A Walk With Yiayia) has announced Vivarium, a hand-drawn story-driven adventure game inspired by Love-de-Lic cult classics Chulip and moon, as well as slice-of-life adventure games like Boku No Natsuyasumi, with visuals and audio inspired by 1974 to early 1980s anime and manga. Platforms and a release date were not announced.

Art Style

Our style is inspired by classic animation, especially from 70s to 80s Japan. Vivarium features a totally hand-drawn traditional cel-animation process—reflective of the media it’s inspired by. Every frame of the game is hand-crafted with love! Vivarium‘s environments are rendered in rich, thickly saturated gouache painting. Every area features its own original art assets and highly detailed painted backdrop. Vivarium uses subtle post-processing, lighting, and color grading to achieve a retro-cinematic aesthetic. Hand-placed dynamic day-night cycle lighting. Grain, lens focus-blur, and a cel drop-shadow are all applied in-engine. These effects replicate the look of traditional animation photographed and printed on film.

*trips and another fiction podcast falls out of my pocket*

hello, it is I, Lauren Shippen, maker of many audio dramas, including the daily @breakerwhiskey. after having so much fun doing that podcast every weekday, I thought "what would be the opposite of doing a daily podcast?" and here we are, with a yearly one. New Year's Day is a yearly podcast about what to make of your life when you live forever and is a collaboration between me and my dear friends Andrew Nowak and Briggon Snow (who you may know from @thebrightsessions). here's the elevator pitch:

Every thirteen years, two old rivals meet on New Year’s Day to discuss their lives in the intervening decade. They lead separate lives but share one earth-shattering secret: they’re both immortal.

new episodes will come out every january 1st - for this first jan 1, we released 3 episodes, so that the main story could get underway, but moving forward it will be only one a year! which is a real change for me obviously! and will certainly be an interesting challenge from a storytelling and audience building standpoint.

on a personal note, this show is a continuation of what I've been trying to do with @breakerwhiskey and what I hope to do with @maxinemilespod later this year, which is to independently produce fiction podcasts. I could go on and on about how tough 2023 was on audio drama - and independent art in general - but suffice to say, having a career as an independent artist is hard. we're making this show - as with @breakerwhiskey - for the sheer love of it, and we hope you love it too.

A) I think it's cool! You two did an amazing job

B) what was storms reaction, and the rest of their teams reaction? I know Storm was involved so their thoughts might not be much, but it's still interesting

Storm- "I have scars on my knees from that you know. Messy, crunchy, zig-zaggy scars, all because they broke my knees with a baseball bat." They grumbled leaning back in their chair. “I was in a coma for about a month afterwards, just so they could at least repair the damage. Couldn't walk after that for a little while. It was terrifying, to say the least. Between the torture and the bomb, what I did was reckless and incredibly stupid. I didn’t see any other option. My goal was get Moose and go, but it didn’t work out like that. Instead got near buried alive, again. I was in too much pain to really process that I was under rubble, so that’s a bonus. The coma was…nice. No visions of my closest people dying, no pain, no stress. Just fucking floating like a dead fish. I barely remember the rescue and I don’t know if that’s the trauma talking or something else. Honestly, I’m just glad to be alive. I am well aware that eventually we all come back but I take a whole lot longer and well the others might not take it kindly.

Bes- “When Joseph came in with that laptop and played that sound bite, I wanted to go on a rampage. I wanted to go out, hunt jade down, and beat him til even the gods don’t recognize his soul. But. But. But. That’s not how SHC works anymore. So we played by Laswell’s ear. Storm doesn’t bounce back like the rest of us. What will take hours for us, will take days for them. Up until we got paidí mou back, I wasn't thinking clearly. Even then afterwards, It took me a minute to realize that I shouldn’t rush off to kick Jade’s head in. I was probably the first one around their bedside aside from Joseph.

Merc- We work closely with Dante and 141, after all sh6 is considered a medic only squad. It was supposed to be a simple observation mission. Wilson was point, Avery was back up, and Joseph was navigation. The info was bad. There was no meeting. Just an ambush. The thud of Avery hitting concrete from a catwalk to be knocked out is very likely a sound I will never want to here again. Jake was the angriest of us. Wanted to go out and paint a building with Jade’s blood. Taylor and I managed to talk him out of it. That doesn’t mean we didn’t have our own struggles. When storm was in recovery, I will admit I thought of calling in a few friends and favors, and hunting Jade myself. Taylor talked me out of it while my husband was at storm’s bedside.

Fen- It was scary. We are all trained to resist interrogation and have died enough to have a knack for it. But this, this was terrifying. Avery is a lot of people’s little sibling. We are protective of them, even in our line of work. So to have your hands tied in red tape while you get video and message of hurting your little sibling, well there’s not a lot of good guy attitude after it. When it came to the bomb going off with those two still in the building, Thank the gods Joseph still had his head about. They did about tear Ghost’s head off for suggesting a mercy kill after finding the two, but I was relieved. We managed to dig them out and get them to the nearest hospital. After that was a waiting game. Michael and Jake are impatient. I had to talk them both down from running out and splattering jade across the pavement. That isn't to say I fully discouraged. We’ve been working on tracking him down, and when the time comes, well we’ll make sure there isn’t a piece of him left even for the crows.

"KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Kicking up dust as its wheels touch down, the orbiter Discovery lands on Runway 15 at NASA's Shuttle Landing Facility, completing mission STS-121 to the International Space Station. Discovery traveled 5.3 million miles, landing on orbit 202. Mission elapsed time was 12 days, 18 hours, 37 minutes and 54 seconds. Main gear touchdown occurred on time at 9:14:43 EDT. Wheel stop was at 9:15:49 EDT. The returning crew members aboard are Commander Steven Lindsey, Pilot Mark Kelly and Mission Specialists Piers Sellers, Michael Fossum, Lisa Nowak and Stephanie Wilson. Mission Specialist Thomas Reiter, who launched with the crew on July 4, remained on the station to join the Expedition 13 crew there. The landing is the 62nd at Kennedy Space Center and the 32nd for Discovery. Discovery's landing was as exhilarating as its launch, the first to take place on America's Independence Day. During the mission, the STS-121 crew tested new equipment and procedures to improve shuttle safety, and delivered supplies and made repairs to the International Space Station."

Kieran was born in Antioch and grew up in a dilapidated home. Both physically and emotionally. His mother, a heroin addict, withered away while he raised himself and his sister. He still remembers how their house smelled. Especially the rotting stuff in the fridge. Kieran never had the opportunity to be a typical child since he had to work whenever he could in order to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads. As a result, he became bitter and despised his existence. He had a special loathing for his mother for depriving him of any sense of childhood and innocence. When he was 14 years old and felt imprisoned, so when he discovered her on the bathroom floor with a needle in her arm and choking on her own vomit, he stood and watched. Kieran and his sister were taken up by social services and separated for years. He didn't find her until he was 19, when he became her legal guardian.

Even though he never went to school, Kieran managed to get his GED with minimal effort. He’s always been too smart for his own good and it’s this intelligence and self awareness that also turned him into a very unemotional and detached individual. Doesn’t mean he’s not able to fake things well. He discovered that he had an act for not only reading people but influencing them. And so he decided to get a degree in psychology and start his own practice.

Meeting John Weaver was, interesting. He had recently lost his job and was suffering from what Kieran believed to be paranoid delusions. And yet, there was something about the way he spoke that seemed incredibly lucid. It did not take much convincing for Kieran to join the Stellar Society, but not because he fully believed in its message. Kieran's devotion to the cult does not stem from his belief for he has never believed in anything other than his own will. But he did find something in the cult that he could not find anywhere else - control.

Because he's a chameleon, able to shift into whatever he needs to be as long as it benefits him, he became an exceptional follower. Which included getting his hands dirty without one inch of remorse. His hands will forever be red. This allowed him to move up the ranks until he eventually became the Stellar Society's official recruiter. His job makes it easy to find vulnerable people that he can exploit and when he finds one, he passes the information to his leader. Once he gets the green light, he starts painting a pretty picture inside the mind of his patient and convinces them to join.

PERSONALITY

Inside Kieran's mind, there are shadows and long extending hallways. Everything he knows about human relationships he mimics from movies, magazines, books, television, not real instances he has experienced in his life. He studies people’s reactions, facial expressions, body language and then spends time practicing in the mirror until he can convince himself that he can pass for a human being and not a carbon copy of one. Something who does not belong on this earth. Something foreign, abstract, squared, black. Kieran learned at a very young age how to manipulate people's emotions to his advantage. If he needed to cry for forgiveness, then he'd do it. He had an act for turning things around with lies and manipulation, to the point where the people he wronged would eventually ask for his forgiveness, firmly believing that he was victim.

He's never been much for love. Has no use for it. Thinking about it puts an odd taste in his mouth; something like overly chlorinated water. The entire feeling he gets from seeing happily wed couples is something similar to everyone around you experiencing the fullness of the third dimension, and you’re stuck in the second; only getting the third by a sanctioned piece at a time. Yet he is very good at pretending. At smiling and regurgitating all the romantic nonsense like word vomit.

There is nothing in there. He cares because he has to. He shows emotions because it's what society expects of him. But in reality, he feels nothing. Nothing is genuine.

Wanted Connection #1: His sister who is three years younger than him but has a childlike personality. Mostly because she has been babied most of her life and Kieran treats her like she's can't do a thing on her own. So she is quite dependent on him. There is nothing wrong with her, but he has convinced her that there is, always referring to it as "your condition".

Wanted Connection #2: His wife who he married 6 years ago and is also very devoted to the cult. They have a very open relationship and is the person he trusts the most. They have a four year old daughter.

It starts with an earache at school.

Frau Meyer asks him if he's alright after he crawls onto the bench by the apple trees and rubs at his ear until it's sore on the outside, too. He says he doesn't know.

Did he get something in it? It'll only hurt worse if he keeps rubbing it.

He doesn't know, he says again.

Ich weiß nicht.

But then his head hurts after recess and into the next period when Herr Nowak points to outlines of countries on the overhead screen. Wer ist unser Nachbar? he asks. Who is our neighbor? He points to the twisting country below Germany, and Max's head swims trying to make out all the wobbles of the border, as though Herr Nowak is asking about those and not the name of the whole country.

Herr Nowak calls his name.

Ich weiß nicht, Max says again, because his head hurts and he feels sick. He doesn't know the name of the shapes on the border.

Some of the other kids laugh, and those sounds pierce his head. Little broken glass shards swept into a pan, rattling around, jabbing at all the soft parts of his brain and making him wince and shudder.

But Herr Nowak doesn't laugh. He frowns, then walks up to Max's desk and kneels beside him. He asks if he's alright, if he needs to see the school nurse.

Ich weiß nicht.

Max doesn't know, and that's all he remembers before his mom picks him up before the last bell rings.

They go to the doctor. Her office is nice, with pictures of cartoon animals on the walls, six Mainzelmännchen sitting outside a doctor's office with various bandages on their knees, hands, and foreheads. Max imagines he's one of them, wearing an over-sized bandage on his head as it throbs and pulses and his ears feel like they're full of wool.

He doesn't remember going into the examination room with his mother. He only remembers the cold press of a stethoscope on his bare back, then his chest, and then bright lights in his eyes.

Doctor Weber turns off her light and looks concerned. She asks him questions, about his family, his friends, how school's going, how much homework he has, what he wants to be when he grows up. But his words come out funny, like he needs to practice them before he says them. They jitter out from between his teeth, and he stutters and pauses to try to gather them back up.

The questions change.

What year is it? What month? What season? Who's the current Chancellor of Germany? (It's okay if he doesn't know the last one, Doctor Weber says to his mother, but she says it so strangely—like she feels sorry for her.)

Ich weiß nicht, Max ends up saying more often than not. Es tut mir leid.

I'm sorry.

The hospital, then. A little visit, his mother says. Just an examination, maybe a few pokes. He can be a good boy, of course. He's always a good boy.

The doctors tell him it'll only be a day or two, just to keep an eye on him. He might be a little sick, but he's so brave that it'll be over before he knows it. They let him watch cartoons from his bed, and he gets an extra slice of strawberry cake from a nice nurse with a pink bandaid on her forehead.

Like the Mainzelmännchen, he says.

She asks him what he means, but Max feels too dizzy to explain. He tries to get some cake onto his little plastic fork, but it falls back onto the plate three times before his mother has to help him. The nurse gives him a sad look, but with a smile—he doesn't understand what that means.

More doctors and nurses come throughout the day and night. More pokes, more bandages. He's so brave. He's so strong. It'll be over soon, they all say.

When? he wants to know.

Ich weiß nicht.

No one knows.

He dreams.

He dreams about his sister taking him for a walk down the hill by their house. Oberkochen is surrounded by hills, and Leonie always says she'll take him over this one, then another, and another until they're in Austria. How many hills until Austria?

He dreams about Michael, his friend from school. Michael is from France, originally. He wants to go back all the time, but his father works for a big company and they can't leave until he's done working there. Sometimes Michael cries at recess, tugging at the teacher's shirts and asking when he can go home. And Max dreams that he asks Michael the same question. When can he go home?

He dreams about Oma and Opa's house in the Jura. Opa calls it their fairytale house, and tells Max about how the big pond behind the house was made because two giants were wrestling and fell on the ground. They were so big that it left a huge dent in the dirt, and the dent filled with rain. Where did the giants go?

He dreams about his mother and father in the kitchen at home. They argue, quietly. His mother smokes cigarettes even though she promised a long time ago that she would quit. His father takes off his glasses and rubs his eyes. They argue more, and then they look at him and ask a question. How could this happen?

There's only one answer to all of these questions.

sorry if its been answered just couldnt find it anywhere, and assumed they were canon squads but i cant find anything of them

All good Anon! SH6 or Safe House Company Squad Six and Task Force Dante are not canon squads. They are Original Character Squads. Task Force Dante belongs to @skylordgrey and SH6 belongs to me. Timeline wise, Both possibly got their starts possibly a little before mw2's favorite murder men, 141.

TF-Dante was started by Captain Daniel "Moose" Wilson and hIs second in command, James "Lumberjack" Lane. They fill a similar role to 141 but possibly not as well known nor widespread. TF-Dante is a seven man squad, consisting of:

The squad is specialized for medical and emergency evac. Imagine an ambulance crew but a higher risk of learning more weird shit than learning of the human body (Thank you charcoal). Especially considering that SHC operates more with supernatural shit. They are contracted to TF-141 and TF-Dante. SH6 is a four man squad consisting of:

United States F-22 fighters, Polish F-16 and MiG-29, along with Italian Eurofighters, conducted a planned series of one-day air maneuvers on October 12, 2022, generating beautiful images in the Polish sky.

These exercises demonstrated that the Allies are joining forces to improve planning and flight skills based on complete planning and universal tactics, techniques and procedures.

“NATO’s Air Protection mission provides an improved posture that allows the Alliance to stop potential threats from the air,” said Brigadier General Ömer Nafiz Gülmezoglu, Deputy Chief of Staff Plans of the Allied Air Command. “Air protection brings an unprecedented number of allied aircraft on patrol on NATO's eastern flank.”

"Kilt fighters are ready to deter and defend themselves against any threat. These activities are conducted in accordance with international laws and standards. They are defensive, but signal NATO's readiness to protect our allies," added General Gülmezoglu.

"Polish pilots from the 32nd Tactical Air Base in Lask today carried out joint missions with their Allies. Together with the contribution of other Allies, the implementation of the F-22 in Poland is a clear expression of NATO's commitment to readiness, which promotes security and stability in the region," said Brigadier General (pilot) Ireneusz Nowak, head of the Air Force Board of the General Command of the Polish Armed Forces.

“We are here mainly in support of NATO's aerial shielding mission. What it seems is an improved posture on the eastern flank of NATO territory, not only to stop our opponents, but also to assure our allies that we are ready to respond to any threat, at any time," said Lieutenant Colonel Michael "Popeye" Kendall, commander of the 90th Expeditionary Hunting Squad. "Since we have been in the European theater, we have integrated and trained with more than 10 NATO allies, which has increased our interoperability and readiness, providing this region with a reliable and effective impediment in an environment of evolving threats," he added.

The international and Polish media joined the Air Shielding event and flew aboard two Polish Air Force's Casa C-295 transport aircraft. All allied fighters who participated in the event underwent an interception training on one of these aircraft, simulating a sequence of steps that NATO performs in the event of a potential air threat to the Allies. The fighters then proceeded to the second transport aircraft to perform coordinated air precision exercises, such as approximate training flights, escorts and interceptions.

Although U.S. F-22 fighters have deployed Lask Air Base since last August, it is the base of the Polish F-16 aircraft. The 5th generation U.S. fighters are contributing to NATO's air shielding mission, demonstrating the transatlantic connection and the advancement of allied capabilities and cooperation. During their deployment in Europe, the F-22 are carrying out regular surveillance flights and air patrols, as well as training events above the region.

The Italian Eurofighter detachment deployed in Malbork under NATO's enhanced air policing mission provides additional capacity to the Alliance to protect its airspace from potential threats. They increase Polish MiG-29 fighters and other aircraft in the region, ensuring deterrence and defense along the eastern flank.
