Looking back on Morning Musume with Fukumura-san, In many places, I think we surpassed our limits--, These words come out now!

But as I've talked about during MCs, It was 2015's Morning Musume,

Michishige Sayumi-san graduated, and we became a really new system of Morning Musume,

There was anxiety, With feelings of wondering if we can properly be Morning Musume

Our first live, was scary, But enthusiastically doing our best, we all cried in a circle……

We did our utmost but, I wonder if we were found out….

But Fukumura-san, who had taken over as the new leader in this time, was really strong and cool, Fukumura-san said it herself during the leader announcement, and its something I've said many times, I never thought even for a moment, "what an unreliable leader"!! I'm too proud about this!!

This Fukumura-san, 9 years have passed since Yokohama Arena,

With a lotttttt of confidence, What is being shown with Morning Musume, In any case!! I'm really happy!!

Its the first time for all of us to experience YokoAri 2days but,

Speaking of that day (2015) from my first time, I just remember, that we were super crying~😂

I love you!!!!! I could say with confidence, Morning Musume had given it our all!

Morning Musume ‘23 【Fukumura Mizuki, Ikuta Erina, Ishida Ayumi】True Feelings Of Leading As Members That Are The Heart of The Group

For the fifth VOCE x Morning Musume ‘23 25th Anniversary Collab, Fukumura Mizuki, Ikuta Erina, and Ishida Ayumi are here. We heard a ton about supporting Morning Musume with outstanding stability, the feelings of the leader and sub leaders that have been active and leading the group for a long time, and their thoughts on the fans and such. Further, having served as leader for 9 years, we also have a special interview with Fukmura Mizuki about her current state of mind as she has announced her graduation at the end of the year!!

–What kind of person is Fukumura Mizuki? Ikuta Erina: The O-Type (laughs)! Basically she is the type to avoid troublesome things as much as possible but (laughs), she is super serious when it comes to Morning Musume! She thinks about many things, she’ll talk about what the members “want to do” and then she’ll consult with people in the company without those members knowing; she is someone who can be really detailed and reliable at those things. The gap between her work and private life is amazing! I trust her.

Ishida Ayumi: Intimate/Friendly leader. Indiscriminately, she’ll talk with all the members about our activities of course, and she has a presence that even makes time for small talk. When I see my juniors talking normally about trivial things, despite the distance in how long we’ve been active and age, I thought, isn’t it amazingly warm that our group can do this? That is the atmosphere Fukumura-san made, I think she has a really wonderful personality.

–What kind of person is Ikuta Erina?

Fukumura Mizuki: Eripon is someone who sticks to what she believes in! She’s good at finding the “cutest moment” for each person! She’s good at taking pictures and will often take them of the other members; she exactly captures the brightest part of the girl. Kitagawa is cute when photographed from above, for Homare it's from the front, for Mei it's from the right, she understands the cutest angles for each person. Also, she is someone who respects her “character”. Even when talking about MC splits, she’ll give me advice like, ‘if you want to talk about that kind of thing, isn’t this the girl for it?’, I think her greatest strength is that she knows the charms of the members the most.

Ishida Ayumi: Her memory is excellent in any case! She’ll often talk about previous things, like even during rehearsals when everyone is dancing, she can remember and teach choreography in detail like, “it was like this before”. Since our group has a long history, I'm really grateful for it towards carrying on our traditions.

–What kind of person is Ishida Ayumi?

Fukumura Mizuki: Ayumin is a person who brings the heat! She is someone who loves her juniors and leaves them with a few words to help them grow. She’s very good at “encouragement”, if a member is losing motivation, even if it's something that's a bit difficult to say she’ll make sure to bring it up to them.Since she conveys her feelings very passionately and directly, I think the juniors are grateful for her saying them. When I don’t have enough energy, I can rely on Ayumin.

Ikuta Erina: A straightforward person! She has the image of always looking ahead and heading towards what she is aiming for. I’m the type of person who thinks for a bit before opening my mouth but Ayumin is the type who can speak directly. I’m envious about that aspect of her.

–Please tell us about times that were difficult and times that were happy as the leader and sub-leaders.

Fukumura Mizuki: I’m someone who is introverted so, I wasn’t used to being the lead, and it was difficult to be in a position where I had to make decisions. It was hard for me to be told “it's because you’re the leader,”.

Happy moments were the moments when something I wanted to do as Morning Musume came true and when we achieved something, when new work was decided for us……there is a lot but, within that the best thing was the moment I was told “I’m glad Fukumura-san is the leader” from the members.

Ikuta Erina: Being entrusted as sub-leader! When it was being discussed I declined it once and said “I’m not suitable” as I don’t feel like I’m the sub-leader type. My role as a sub-leader is, I’ll listen to Mizuki, I’ll consult with Mizuki about the group often; I do things to support Mizuki, and I’m happy to be able to do this with Mizuki!

Ishida Ayumi: I started giving the closing remarks during lives and would introduce the next song; I quite enjoy thinking about what I will say there. No matter what kind of nuance in the words you use, I realized that the mood of the live will change, so I want to choose my words carefully. Now at Fukumura-san’s suggestion, we started dividing MC’s regardless of role.

–What are things you keep in mind as the leader and sub-leaders?

Fukumura Mizuki: I try not to show my worries and anxious feelings in front of the members. The leader before me was Michishige Sayumi-san and I felt absolutely safe with her like “If Michishige-san is here it's alright”. I have to become a strong leader like Michishige-san or I think everyone would be uneasy, so even if I’m worried I won’t speak it out loud.

With that, taking a step back, I try to be a person who can interact with adults. I convey my intentions like “I want Morning Musume to be like this,”; we have had a lot of discussions to bring the members together.

Ikuta Erina: I want to listen to Mizuki as much as I can. My goal is to convey to everyone the ideal image of Morning Musume as the leader has envisioned.

Ishida Ayumi: It is like……increasing my people skills. The timing of when I became sub-leader was just the right time to think about things like that, so I tried to improve my people skills by making an effort to get people to listen to me.

–Is there a secret to you being active for so long?

Fukumura Mizuki: Believing in the smiles and words from the fans in front of me. There were many times where I lost my confidence and my own voice. Since their love for Morning Musume isn’t a lie, I’ll think “I have to believe in what I’ve done”, but I couldn’t believe in myself. At those times, seeing all of the fans at the concert purely enjoying themselves before my eyes gave me energy!

Ikuta Erina: The support from all the fans. Seeing all the fans commenting on my blog, and seeing them come to concerts, I’ll think, ‘I’ll do my best to overcome painful or sad things’!

Ishida Ayumi: Being conscious towards having fun. It's a mindset I’ve recently found, when faced with a choice I’ll choose the more fun one. Even if someone recommends it to me, I should intuitively think “sounds fun”; if it feels like “maybe I’ll give it a try” I absolutely don’t want to do it. I value keeping that kind of feeling alive.

–What is the presence of the fans to you?

Fukumura Mizuki: In the song “Koibito ni wa Zettai ni Shiraretakunai Shinjitsu” there are the lyrics “Even though that person told me that they love me, that they love all of me, there are parts that I don’t like,” that is exactly, how I feel towards the fans. I hated myself so much that I couldn’t understand how my fans would like me.

But, there were those that would always come, those that comment on my blog every day, those that wave my member color in their pen lights at concerts, I’m happy to have fans that told me they liked me, as it made me feel accepted for who I am, so I thought I would stop hating myself too, and I’m really thankful for that. Therefore, I do my best with things so that those people can find me wherever I am.

Ikuta Erina: The fans have really helped me, all I can say is I’ve been saved by them. I’m selfish, some people think I “look scary”, I’m the type where I don’t make a good first impression. But, fans have tweeted “Eripon isn’t that kind of person”; on my blog as well they’ll write “The usual Eripon wouldn’t write something like this, so you must have something on your mind”, they can even understand my thoughts!

When I’m doing the MC at a concert, sometimes I have to reply to the fans like, “It's not like that!” and there is absolute trust that they’ll understand like “Eripon shook it up to make it interesting,”! I always want to communicate and become one with the audience as it makes the concerts interesting!

Ishida Ayumi: Man~~~ I really like them. Seeing and hearing them having fun, I’ll be happy that we’re enjoying it together, I think it's so lovely. The current “Morning Musume’s Ishida Ayumi” exists now because of the fans presence, my mindset came to chose fun because they said “I like it when Ayumi-chan is having fun,”; because they said “I like Ayumi’s high notes” I came to have confidence in high notes (laughs), I was proud about being praised for my face in profile so I came up with the phrase “Miyagi’s Miracle” (laughs).

I like to challenge new things but, I’m grateful as I feel like I could give it a try because all of the fans make it fun for me. Of course, we wouldn’t be celebrating our 25th anniversary without the support from all of the fans. Even though each of the fans have met Morning Musume at different times, I respect the sense of unity that's born during lives, I feel at ease seeing a sense of camaraderie among fans. Therefore I’m always hoping that all of the fans will smile, and I’m doing my best towards that!

–What is one piece of advice you would give to the 17th generation members who will be joining soon?

Fukumura Mizuki: I’d like to say “Cherish your individuality,”. We’re a large group, so I think there are things you can’t say because you’re worried that you’re the only one floating around or different. But I think the parts where you feel different are the parts that make you super charming so, I want you to value that.

Ikuta Erina: It's “create your own time to speak,”. I think that MC’s and song splits are the same if you compare them, and MC’s are easier to win on your own. With new members the introductions are like “I’m a new member” but, when the introduction is gone, the most important thing is showing your own appeal. I won’t hate you at all if you come at me eagerly like “Don’t I have time in the MC to talk?”, I want you to actively go about things like that. I’d be happy with it as it would encourage the seniors like, “a crazy junior has come”.

Ishida Ayumi: It's, “I’ll teach you the basics of dance choreography so call on me”! Morning Musume passes on old footage as material, there is the custom to come to rehearsals after having memorized it, that's how it's been done for generations but, since there are a lot of songs, you’ll stumble at first like “I can’t remember this many songs”. It's too bad that I couldn’t do it with Sakurai but, this time, I’ll teach the basics so “please come at once!”. The choreography is detailed, there are detailed movements you can’t see in the videos, it's really much faster to ask directly so, I definitely want you to call on me.

–Is there anything you’d like to do individually?

Ikuta Erina: I love makeup and fashion so, I’d like work where I would be able to make the most of that. In particular I want to try producing cosmetics, first I’d like to try making mascara and eyeliner. Since my eyes without makeup look sleepy, I use a base, lengthening and volumizing mascara, those 3 in that order; I have a high baseline temperature of around 37C so, eyeliner smudges easier on me than others, I’ve done a lot of research on choosing products and how to draw it. Up until now I haven’t gotten an opportunity to show it off but, I definitely want to show off my full makeup! I want to do YouTube as well.

Ishida Ayumi: I have things! But, I’ll do them in the future!!

–Please tell us how you felt when you thought about graduating.

Fukumura Mizuki: When the 15th generation joined, it naturally felt like perhaps they’d be the last juniors that I would enroll. Spending time with the members is so much fun, I love Morning Musume and there are still many dreams I want to come true, I had the feeling that I wanted to see the growth of these girls, but it couldn’t be from inside the group, it's important to entrust the future so, I came to think about it around this time.

After the 3 in 15th generations first tour since joining, I talked with them about “What do you want to do for the next tour?” and they very seriously told me things like “I want to do my best in this area” and “I want to improve here”. At that time, I thought that entrusting the future to these girls would really be alright, and I came to want to take my next steps.

Around that time, the covid pandemic had just started, so we weren’t really able to have group activities, and I had more time to face myself…… Up until now I was so busy there wasn’t any time to face myself but, I think I perhaps changed during this period. When we all got together after a long time we talked a ton, it was unbelievably exciting, I started to think more about the other members.

–Have your feelings changed since deciding to graduate?

Fukumura Mizuki: I felt many joys and sorrows but, I think it was a time I was really worried. With the generational change, the division of roles, and the fear of being chosen; There was a time I was doing my best while telling myself “You can’t keep going like this, it isn’t Morning Musume!”. As soon as I started thinking about graduating covid happened so, concerts were limited, I had a feeling I would feel regret if I graduated now; I was conflicted about whether or not I should be in the group…… I strongly felt like, “What do I do,”.

But, when I announced my graduation in December of 2022, as soon as I could see the end of myself as a Morning Musume, I’m now facing each and every work as “this is a moment I can only feel now,”; it has a special feeling to it, while I’m working I’m consciously trying to make it a time where I can learn a lot regardless of seniority.

With that, I’ve voiced dreams that I want to come true for Morning Musume more and more! Since there are some areas where it would be difficult with the members' motivation alone, in order for it to come true without me, I’m going to take the initiative to get those at the office involved and work on it until I graduate.

–Is there anything you want to do before you graduate?

Fukumura Mizuki: To share my dreams for Morning Musume with the members! What I like about each member, where I want them to grow, since I have expectations, I want to convey them! But, really I want to come out with an album, and I want to do as many events as possible. I want to have a tour in Hawaii too~ I want to have overseas lives, I want to do a lot of work as Morning Musume, I want to do something new!

–Is there anything you want to do after graduating?

Fukumura Mizuki: It's a secret ♡.

–Is there something you want to convey to those becoming the leader and sub-leader?

Fukumura Mizuki: I don’t want you to worry alone. You’re surrounded by reliable members and staff, also I don’t want you to forget that all of the fans believe in you.
