"Is everything ok?"

"My agent just texted me. He wants to talk. Asap."

"At this time in the night?"

We are out for dinner with Taylor and Charlie, who are free from the little one for the first time since she was born. Grandparents, what would we do without them.

"Yep. I'm going outside to call him, I'll be back in a minute" Rúben says as he leaves the table.

"Did something happen?" Taylor asks.

"His agent wanted to talk. It seemed serious."

"Could it be something about his career? What if PSG or Real Madrid have asked about him?" Charlie asks.

A few minutes later, Rúben comes back, his face letting us know that something bad has definitely happened.

"What is it, Rúben?" I ask, holding his hand when he sits down. Or when he lets himself fall on the chair. He is always composed, especially in public, and seeing him like this is making me worry a lot more.

"We... Someone... Urgh" he says, clearly distressed. "The Daily Mail is publishing an article about us tomorrow."

"They are doing what?" I say, definitely raising my voice, the people around us giving me a disapproving look.

"Someone has apparently sold them the story, and they have photos."

"But... How? Have you been followed or something?" Taylor asks.

"I don't know. I don't think so" Rúben says.

"Can we stop them from publishing it?" I ask.

"No, we can't. My agent said that depending on what they have and share on that article, we can ask them to take it down and then maybe sue them. But right now, there is nothing we can do. We should be grateful that they warned us about it."

"Yeah, but they did it when you can't do anything to stop them" Charlie says.

"So... That's it, then? We just wait until they share our relationship with the world? Without our consent?" I say, trying not to cry. This is not right. We should be the ones choosing when to be public if that's what we want to do.

"I'm afraid so" Rúben says, kissing my hand and trying to make me relax. But I can't. I am so angry.

That night I barely sleep. I'm constantly turning and twisting in bed, thinking about what the Daily Mail could have about us, and who could have sold it. Rúben is as restless as I am, and even though he stays still, I can feel that he is awake, his body tense. Just what he needed before a Champions League game next week.

At one point we must have fallen sleep, exhaustion taking over us. When we hear his phone ring, we both instantly wake up.

"Hey" Rúben says, answering it. "No, not yet. Yes. I see. Ok. What now? Ok, we will. Thank you."

"So?" I ask. "Is it bad?"

"Whoever sold the story, got photos and videos from your Instagram from these past months, like from Christmas with our families or during the summer."

"Then I have a mole among the people who follow me?"

"Looks like it. Any idea who could it be?"

"I don't know, I'll have to check. What does the article say?"

"He sent me the link. Do you want to read it? Maybe there is a detail that will tell us who did all this."

"Ok."

“And?” Rúben asks once I’ve finished.

“Whoever sent them this, did proper research, matching my stories and posts with where you were at the time. But there is something else… let me read it again.”

“What is it? Why are you opening your eyes like that?”

“I think I know who it was.”

“Really?”

“Yep. They mention that we’ve been together since the beginning of last year, maybe a bit earlier. Besides Taylor, Charlie and Rebecca, there is only one person who could know about us already seeing each other.”

“Who?”

“Hugo.”

"You are not worth of your position, and the sooner you realize it and step aside so those who truly deserve it have a chance, the better. If you don't do it, I'll do it myself. And trust me, none of your friends will be able to help you.”

Hugo. His threat. He did it. He has indeed managed to do something that could ruin my career. Fuck.

“I can’t believe that little shit did it” Taylor says when I share my suspicions with her.

“We don’t know for sure, but it’s more than likely that it was him.”

“And just because Marc is now working with you?”

“I guess that’s one of the reasons. But you know that since I started working at Sky, he’s been trying to take me on a date. Looks like seeing me happy and with someone like Rúben, was the last straw.”

“That’s so… pathetic. What are you gonna do now? Are you gonna sue the Daily Mail?”

“Rúben’s lawyers are working on it. The fact that all the photos come from a private account may help us. But I don’t know… I don’t know.”

“Hey, if you need to cry or scream at someone… You know I’m here for you” Taylor says, moving to sit next to me.

“I know. Thank you” I say, giving her a hug.

“How was it at the office today?”

“All eyes were on me, and I heard some people whispering. But while I was in the bathroom a couple of girls said congratulations, and that if one day you come to pick me up from work, I should let them know.”

“That’s… I don’t know how to feel about it” Rúben laughs.

“Flattering?”

“I guess” he says, laughing again.

“How are things over there?”

“I spoke with your friend Pep today. He wanted to know how I was feeling and if I needed anything, even some time off.”

“What did you say?”

“That it wasn’t a pleasant feeling to have your private relationship being made public by the press, but that I was ok.”

“Are you?”

“I am. You?”

“Yeah. Still angry, but I’m ok.”

A week after the article was published, my boss asks me to meet her at her office.

“Please, take a sit” she says. “How are you feeling?”

“Good. A bit tired after the trip to Liverpool because of all the delays, but good.”

“And on your personal life? Is everything alright after that article was posted?”

“We are ok. The lawyers are taking care of it.”

“Good, good. That article is the main reason why I asked you to come here today” she says. Shit. Did Hugo get what he wanted? Are they firing me for dating a football player? “I’ve spoken with “the people upstairs”, and we all want you to know that we are by your side.”

“You… what?”

“We support you. No one should have their personal life exposed like that. Not when it clearly is being kept private. Upstairs they wanted you to know that if you need legal support, our lawyers will help with anything you may need. And if anyone here at the office bullies you or mistreats you in any way, know that you can report them. We would not allow that behavior.”

“That’s… That’s very kind of you. Thank you very much.”

“You are one of our best young journalists, you’ve proven it since you arrived here. You have such a bright future ahead of you. And yes, you are dating a football player. But that hasn’t changed anything regarding your work. You’ve kept being professional, giving the best of yourself. You both have, to be honest. I watched again the interview you had with Dias before this article came out, and no one could have suspected anything. So as long as that continues, which I’m confident it will, your personal life is yours and no one else’s.”

“So you are not firing me?” I dare to ask.

“Of course not! You don’t have to worry about anything.”

“Thank you” I say, the heavy weight I had on my chest starting to disappear.

He's always been brave at making decisions. Leaving Barcelona at that time was what he thought was best for his career. Choosing Barcelona over Real Madrid when he was a kid.

He did do well in psg, he might not have been as much in the spotlight as he was, but idk his football improved in different ways?

You’re right he’s made quite a few imp decisions in his life. And yes, he has become more refined and his first season at psg was out of this world, he was thriving. I know that no one will know what’s best for him more than he himself…

It’s just that while I love psg, I’ve been here for a while now but as a Neymar fan, I still think him leaving might be for the best. If not because the club itself wants to get rid of him then because a number of other things. Firstly, bcs of the constant disrespect he receives from psg fans. They will never appreciate him the way he deserves, you saw the mc donald scandal? What on earth was that? They didn’t even know what he had ordered or if he had even ordered smth yet they made such a big deal out of this. They act like he brings nothing to the team when he’s literally one of the only players actually trying. Someone of his caliber deserves fans that recognizes what he does. I don’t need them to like him (I know he’s not at his best right now) but the least they can do is acknowledge what he does for this team.

Secondly, the ligue 1 refs don’t like him. I know there are shitty referees everywhere but these ones are ridiculous. They always give him yellows for the slightest things, but his opponents get away with doing the same thing/worst things to him. The sheer number of times I’ve wanted to throw things at my tv when this happens is unreal.

Thirdly, psg isn’t what it was when he first got here anymore. Some of the players (midfield especially, except Marco) are average at best. Soler gives me nightmares, Vintinha is unreliable( good one day, bad the next), I don’t even what to talk about Hugo (he needs more time ig). As long as Luis campos is in charge, psg is going to remain at the level they are right now; I do believe they will improve but not by much. Out of all of the players he could’ve bought I don’t understand why he chose the ones he did. He has so much money on his hands yet he doesn’t know how to use it efficiently. Galtier…Just please bring Tuchel back. If it continues like this, psg is in serious trouble.

Again, I love psg, this team raised me but I don’t want him to spend his last years in a team that might as well be cursed atp. His contact is till 2027, he’ll be 35. If he keeps getting injured like he did during the past years and the way he said that he might not be mentally strong enough for another World Cup, if he starts to feel like this with club football…I’m scared that psg is sucking the joy that football used to bring him, out of him.

Ohmygod I didn’t mean to write this much I’m sorry…I just wanted to let this out.

the very first time we encounter each other is at a local cafe in paris !! he's a pro player for psg, i'm here for my internship after moving out to continue education in sports psychology. simple as that !! and we both need some pick-me-up coffee to start the day. rin stands in line behind me when i order a latte and my favorite croissant - and it just happens to be the last one. i joke around with the cashier on how it must be my lucky day then,, and right as i say it rin sighs and tells whoever he's on the phone with that they have just ran out& he has to get something else. i turn to look at him and tell him that it's okay, i don't mind getting something else instead - and i recognize him and get all sheepish 😭 cause he IS so tall and intimidating and looks way too annoyed for his own good, and it is THE rin itoshi after all. he lifts the phone from his ear and shakes his head before insisting i take it, it's fine. ryusei might as well just not get his daily sugar dose this time, it's not a big deal, he thinks. he's not going to make a fuss out of it. i ask if he's sure and he nods, and because i want this interaction to b over already i just go thru and buy it </3 i tell the cashier to pack it to go & she's a bit surprised cause i'm usually the regular sitting in the corner and studying for hours on end,, but i tell her i just need something to sweeten up my day in case my first day at work turns out worse than expected !! she gets all excited and we laugh a bit and rin's a bit on the rush, but he doesn't mind, and it feels a bit funny to him, but he doesn't pay that much mind to it. but just when i'm about to walk away &wait at the end of the bar he turns to me& tells me good luck :( you already know i nearly trip over my feet when i go to walk away akjsfhask by this point i am a mess!!!!!!

now when we PROPERLY meet each other it's barely a few hours later, at the training centre, and i step out of the office after signing all the remaining documents i need to go through w/ my internship. i don't really know my way around the building that well yet &take a few wrong turns, so when i can't find my way out to the field where i'm supposed to meet the team for the very first time, i go to ask a guy that happens to walk past. and of course it's him :,3 i only ever notice when he turns to me & we're both surprised - he has every right to be, me not so much cause ... i knew where i was signing up lol - and he tells me he's going that way too, has some dumb meeting with their health team, so we can walk together. "why'd you think it's dumb?" i ask and he shrugs a bit. "it's not like we really need it. what, you one of them?" rin looks down on me and it just sorta clicks - the first day at work, now me looking for where the meeting takes place - and he smiles a bit. "i see. well there's nothing to be scared of. ryusei, maybe." he deadpans & i nearly cry 😭 cause WHY would u bring up the one (1) most unhinged man among all of u akjfdhsl and then he adds, "he wasn't too happy when i told him you took his croissant."

........tldr; we meet bc of work but it's sweet & perhaps fate played a part in it too :3 he's not too keen of having a psychologist gf cause he's scared i'll end up analyzing him LOL i'm just like.. no babes i've a whole football team 2 look after whenever something goes wrong my world doesn't spin around u . Did you watch Brazil's qualifier against Uruguay? Not only did they lose 2-0, but Neymar got injured again. That kind of got me thinking about how lucky it is that Barcelona didn't sign Neymar again, I mean all the people who were slandering Xavi for refusing to sign him, it definitely seems like Barca dodged a bullet. No disrespect to Neymar, he'll always have a huge role in Barcelona's history as well as his contribution to MSN, but he's only 31 and it's like he's already well past his prime. That's not to say he's not insanely talented and one of the best players in the world, but that's only when he's fit and that seems to be increasingly less often. I mean, this year alone he's missed 160 days due to injury and had to sit out of 22 games, and now that he's injured again, who knows how long he'll be out and how many more games he'll miss for Al-Hilal. I'm pretty sure you said the same thing unless I imagined it, but the only reason some people wanted Neymar back was for nostalgia, if Barca ended up signing him it would have been trading one Dembele for another(no disrespect to Dembele or Neymar, it's just that they both get injured a lot) and in the end Neymar would have been a hindrance to Barcelona's progress rather than an advantage. It's wild to think about, but in the past three years alone, Neymar has been out for 399 days and has missed 71 games. Which irks me in that some people are so blindsided by their nostalgia that they can't seem to comprehend that Neymar isn't the player he used to. That is again to say no disrespect to Neymar, he will always be regarded as one of the best players of his generation as well as one of Barcelona's and Brazil's greatest ever players, but ever since he left Barcelona it's been a continual downslide in fitness for him. To put it into perspective, in the four years that Neymar played for Barcelona he was out for 107 days and missed 34 games, obviously not good but it pales in comparison to his time at PSG, it's quite alarming. In the six years he was at PSG, he was out for 758 days and missed 148 games. Which means that in the span of a 14 year career, Neymar has been been out due to injury a combined 2 years(give or take) and has missed 182 games, and the time and games missed is combined for both club and country. Now that we have the numbers, it's easy to see that Neymar's injuries have become increasingly more frequent since his departure from Barca, and it's all the more troubling once you realise that Neymar spent around two more years with PSG than he did Barcelona, but despite that he has less appearances for PSG than he does Barca. So, if Xavi had agreed to sign Neymar once again, while there may have been a guarantee of his talent there would not have been a guarantee of his fitness, and with this season already starting off with a bunch injuries, adding Neymar into the mix would not have been a benefit to a Barcelona that is currently in need of stability and consistency.

Sorry if that was longwinded, I have a tendency to rant.

Does the athletic aspect dominate over the style of play?

The athletic dimension is gaining more and more importance in women's football. To the point of becoming the primary factor, as implied the PSG coach Gerard Precheur, hitting out at Lyon's lack of style of play?

Following Lyon's win in the league last May 21, PSG coach Gerard Precheur went after Sonia Bompastor's coaching, describing Lyon's performances as disappointing as it was too focused on the individual and athletic dimensions and not enough on the style of play.

"For the past four-five years, what has evolved the most in women's football, it's the athletic aspect. That's the reality, we can't deny it," she argues. "As a coach, I have a philosophy, a model of play, things I like to see in my team. But if in a game, we're not able to compete with the impact and intensity, we can't exist with the ball. We owe it to ourselves to have players who are physical and able, on a technical level, to play under pressure to get the upper hand over the opponent," Bompastor puts forth, dismissing the "unfortunate statements" made by Precheur. Without letting herself off the hook completely. "Of course there are areas of improvement. In the big games, we can always do better." But the top level, it's a balance between having the upper hand and be able to win by being efficient. If we look at the four games we played against PSG this season, we proved that we deserved to win certain games."

A football more susceptible to injuries?

With football becoming physical, the injuries are increasing amongst the women['s teams]. Lyon is no exception. "There has been a notable improvement compared to last season," Bompastor remarked nonetheless, who had taken charge of the injury crisis and out in place "things" with her staff in an attempt to decrease the injuries. However, some remain critical. Like that of Delphine Cascarino (torn ACL), the latest victim - "the specialists said that with the pressure put on her knee during the duel, the injury was almost inevitable. This year, we once again finish the season with an ACL injury. It's annoying, especially when we lose a core player," Bompastor said. She brought up the length of rehabilitation for that type of injury, between 8 and 9 months compared to 6 months previously. Following the footsteps of Macario or Katoto, who both had a blank season after having torn their ACLs last summer. [Note, Carpenter tore her ACL on May 21 and was back early February, but it was also her first major ACL injury whereas both Cascarino and Macario had torn their ACLs previously]

The action which lead to Delphine Cascarino getting seriously injured in the 55th minute of the PSG-OL game made Sonia Bompastor beside herself. If she obviously didn't suspect the severity of the injury spur of the moment, she was also heated over the non-call of the foul which could have lead to a penalty.

Ten days later, she analyzes the situation without making a concession: "It could have had a serious consequences on the end result, and it will deny a player from being at the World Cup. There are situations where the referee has to step up to the occasion." But the Lyon coach estimated that the women's refereeing needs support: "they don't have a professional status and have a job on the side. They need to come together, they need to debrief all the games to be able to progress. If at Lyon we take care of them on game days, in pretty much every other club, they arrive at the station and have to find their own way to the stadium by themselves. It really needs to become professional because in a match between two top teams, the refereeing needs to be at the same level to have a high quality game."

Would it be a step back to name. male referees for certain D1 Arkema games? "I often say that you have to be rational in terms of competency. And the French league needs that. if the women are competent and ready, there's no worries. Now, if we have to wait a bit longer and the competency is with the male referees, then that's where it's at. Competency doesn't know gender."

She Breathes - An Alyssa Naeher Imagine

Prompt: Reader is new to the USWNT and Alyssa has a huge crush on her but is super oblivious to the fact that the reader likes her back

A/N: so I went off so enjoy almost 5000 words of gay ramblings. Also if anyone’s listened to She Breathes by Kyle Selig, you should know it really inspired me with the ending and it fit as a title

Of course Alyssa Naeher’s heard of Y/N Y/L/N. There’s not a single person in women’s soccer who hasn’t heard of her. Who hasn’t heard of the girl who signed for Lyon right out of high school and won a starting spot over the best in the world and won the Champions League all in her first season? So yeah, Alyssa’s heard of her.

Despite hearing about her, and watching her games (even if it meant getting up at an ungodly hour of the morning), Alyssa’s never actually met her. Y/N’s been in Europe and Alyssa’s stayed with the Red Stars and hasn’t gone out on loan like many of her teammates have. So, Alyssa’s never met her. That is, until now.

Now Y/N’s back in the States, at least temporarily, and she’s coming to camp. Vlatko’s been, obviously, impressed by her and finally gave her the call up she deserves.

Alyssa walks into the conference room where everyone’s meeting before they’re given their room assignments to find everyone standing around something. Or, rather, someone. Y/N is soaking up the attention, answering question after question about France and Lyon and the Champions League. Right now, she’s showing Rose and Sam photos she has on her phone of the Champions League trophy and medals she’s won, while simultaneously engaging in a playful debate about Lyon vs. PSG with Lindsey and Tobin. Alyssa stands awkwardly near the doorway, unsure if she should announce her presence, or just sit down, or introduce herself to Y/N. And she’s debating with herself whether its ruder not to say anything to Y/N than to interrupt her while she’s in the middle of two conversations.

“Hey, Lys,” Becky comes to her rescue. Thank god for Becky, Alyssa thinks, Becky’s always been a calming presence for her around the craziness that is their team and Alyssa can’t imagine surviving camp without her.

“Hey, Becky,” Alyssa says softly and gives Becky a hug.

“How was your flight?” Becky asks.

“It was fine. I was able to finish today’s crossword, which was a plus,” Alyssa says, “How about yours?”

“I wish I was on your flight; I had screaming babies and free-range children on mine,” Becky says as Alyssa grimaces, “Right? I spent the whole time staring out the window with my headphones on.”

“Hey, Alyssa!” Kelley yells. Finally everyone notices Alyssa standing there. Alyssa waves, but Kelley, not satisfied, grabs Alyssa’s arm and pulls her over to where everyone’s standing. Alyssa’s saying hi to everyone when she makes eye contact with Y/N. Alyssa feels her face flush as she looks into Y/N’s eyes. She wants to say something, anything, even just hi, but she can’t speak past the lump in her throat.

“Hey, Alyssa, right? I’m Y/N,” Y/N holds out her hand and after a beat, Alyssa grabs it and shakes it.

“I know who you are,” Alyssa finds her voice and instantly regrets it. “I… I just mean that… you’re popular. Well known. Is what I meant. Not that I know you like in a weird, stalkery way.” Thankfully, Y/N laughs.

“I get that a lot,” Y/N should sound arrogant, Alyssa thinks, but she doesn’t. “Everyone knows Y/N Y/L/N, young American star of Lyon. I feel like I never get to really meet anybody new anymore. Everyone I meet already knows so much about me.”

“I don’t know that much about you,” Alyssa doesn’t know why she feels the need to reassure Y/N that she’s not totally obsessed with her like everyone else. “I just know what you’ve done with your career. I don’t know anything about you, really. Not about who you are.” Y/N’s face shifts into a smile that feels more genuine than any she’s had in the entire time Alyssa’s been looking at her.

“I suppose you’re right. It’s nice to talk to you, Alyssa.”

Alyssa’s about to respond when she feels a small body jump into her back. Alyssa scowls.

“Get off of me, Kelley,” Alyssa says.

“Nope! Guess again!”

Alyssa sighs. “Hi Morgan. Please get off me.” Morgan does as she’s told and pouts up at Alyssa.

“You’re no fun,” Morgan says. Alyssa is unmoved by Morgan’s pouting and whining and Morgan leaves to go find someone “fun”. Alyssa turns back to keep talking to Y/N, only to find her already talking to Crystal. Alyssa doesn’t get to ponder the disappointment she feels before Vlatko calls for everyone to settle. Alyssa finds a spot beside Becky and listens attentively to what Vlatko has to say.

Alyssa’s in her room later when there’s a knock at her door. Alyssa’s alone in her room; Christen’s her roommate for this camp which Alyssa is glad about. Christen is quiet and neat and overall a very good roommate (Alyssa roomed with Sonnett once and woke up to find a very realistic spider hanging over her head and Sonnett cackling as she recorded the whole thing); however, part of the downside of having Christen as a roommate is that she’s rarely in the room before curfew, always with Tobin or Ali or Mal or some other teammate, leaving Alyssa to keep answering the door and telling whoever it was that, no, Christen is not there, and no, she doesn’t know where Christen is, and yes, they should check Tobin’s room down the hall.

“Christen’s not here,” Alyssa says before she fully opens the door.

“Oh, that’s okay,” Y/N says, “I’m not here to see Christen.”

“Oh.” It’s not that Alyssa’s surprised to see Y/N, she’s staying at the same hotel, on the same floor as the rest of the team, so Alyssa’s not surprised to see Y/N in the hotel they’re all staying at. She’s only surprised that Y/N is outside her room, and knocked on her door, and it wasn’t for Christen.

“I was wondering if you were free. There’s this coffee place down the road and I was wondering if you wanted to come with,” Y/N says casually, “If you’re busy or whatever, it’s no biggie. I won’t be upset.” Normally, after travelling, all Alyssa wants to do is rest and adjust to being in a new place. All of her teammates know this, which is why none of them have come by asking her to join them for lunch or shopping or movie marathons. Alyssa guesses Y/N didn’t get the memo.

“Yeah, okay,” Alyssa finds herself saying, “Let me just grab my wallet and stuff.”

“Great!”

As Alyssa walks back to her bag to grab her wallet and room key, she shakes her head at herself. Y/N said she wouldn’t be upset if Alyssa didn’t want to go, so why did she agree so quickly? Why did the thought of saying no feel so wrong? It’s not like Alyssa has a problem saying no to her teammates. She regularly does and doesn’t think twice about it. Why is Y/N different?

“So you and Y/N are getting pretty close,” Becky says. Alyssa takes a sip of coffee before responding.

“Yeah. We have a lot more in common than you think.”

And they do. Alyssa didn’t think she would have anything in common with someone like Y/N, but she is glad to be wrong. Y/N acts extroverted and anyone looking at her would believe she loves the attention and wants to be out at parties every night, but it’s all an act. Y/N spends more nights in than out, preferring to spend her time alone with a good book or a crossword, something Alyssa obviously relates to. Alyssa finds that she prefers to spend her time with Y/N than anyone else, something she didn’t expect from the “young American star of Europe”.

“I bet. You guys seem like really good… friends.” There is something about the way Becky says “friends” that makes Alyssa’s palms sweat, but she doesn’t acknowledge it. Instead, she just nods.

“Lys, she likes you too.” Of course Becky can see right through her. Alyssa should know better by now, but she likes to pretend that she can fool Becky sometimes.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Alyssa mumbles. She can feel her face heating up, so she lifts her crossword up to hide her face from Becky, pretending to be looking at the clues.

“Lys…”

“I hope you didn’t finish the whole thing without me,” Y/N sits down beside Alyssa. Alyssa shakes her head and slides the crossword between her and Y/N. “You okay, Lys? Your face looks a little red.” Y/N reaches her hand out and gently places it on Alyssa’s forehead. This does nothing but make Alyssa’s blush deepen and her heart beat faster. Y/N’s brow furrows.

“I’m okay,” Alyssa says, “My coffee is just a little hot and… it’s… you know.”

“You sure? You don’t think you have a fever or anything?” Y/N asks. Becky gives Alyssa a pointed look that Alyssa pointedly ignores.

“Ash!” Ali smacks Ash’s arm. “Stay out of their business!” Then, she whispers quietly, “Put me down for last week of camp.”

“No way, sooner than that,” Kelley says, “Do you see that?” Kelley gestures to where Y/N has grabbed Alyssa’s hand and is swinging it around and Alyssa smiling the whole time. “I touched Alyssa’s arm once while setting up for a corner and I thought she was going to break my hand. I’d say three days max.”

“Three days? No way!” Sonnett says, “You know Alyssa’s a chicken on a good day. It’ll be at least a week before she grows a pair and asks Y/N out.”

“Who says I thought Alyssa was going to be doing the asking?” Kelley asks. Sonnett opens her mouth then reconsiders and closes it.

“I gotta go with Sonny on this one,” Pinoe says, “I think it’s down to Alyssa to ask, Y/N totally would’ve by now if she was going to.”

“You don’t know that,” Rose says, “Maybe she’s waiting to be sure that Alyssa likes her.”

“Oh no, she’s sure,” Sonnett says.

“Who’s sure about what?” Everyone jumps at Y/N’s voice. They look frantically amongst each other, waiting for someone else to say something. Y/N raises her eyebrows.

“Don’t worry about them,” Alyssa says, “They’re normally this weird.”

“Then I guess it’s a good thing I like you better,” Y/N smiles at Alyssa and touches her arm lightly. Alyssa’s face flushes and she looks down. Kelley gives Sonny an “I told you so” look and Sonny squirts Kelley with her water in response. As Kelley chases Sonny, the rest of the team watches Y/N brush a piece of grass off Alyssa’s cheek.

“So Y/N’s settling in well, don’t you think?” Christen says.

“Yeah.” Alyssa knows Christen wants her to say more, but she stays silent. She knows Christen doesn’t want to talk about how Y/N’s settling in with the team. There was no doubt that Y/N would fit in just fine, she’s never had any trouble getting along with teammates. Alyssa knows Christen doesn’t want to talk about that. Alyssa doesn’t want to talk about what Christen does want to talk about, which is Alyssa and Y/N’s relationship, or lack thereof. Alyssa hates how nosey her teammates are sometimes. It’s only a matter of time before Y/N hears them gossiping and Alyssa will lose her as a friend. There’s no way Y/N would like someone like Alyssa. Y/N could have anyone she wants, why would she want a shy, introverted goalkeeper?

“I’m sure you’ve helped with that,” Christen says, “It’s always good to have a… friend on a new team.” The pause before Christen said “friend” was deliberate, Alyssa knows. She hums in response, not willing to give Christen any more fuel for her fire. “I was really lucky to have Tobin when I was first coming into the team,” Christen continues, “She was really helpful to me when I was finding my place.”

“We’re not like you and Tobin,” Alyssa says harshly. Christen isn’t deterred.

“I didn’t say that but… Alyssa, it’s okay to date a teammate, you know.”

“We’re not like you and Tobin. Or Ali and Ash. We’re not.” Alyssa really wishes Christen would drop the conversation.

“Alyssa,” Christen says, “You don’t have to be scared. I know it can be scary but you don’t need to be. If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be, it doesn’t matter who they are, teammate or not. You can make it work if you just try.”

“It doesn’t always work,” Alyssa snaps, “Even if you try. We’re not like you and Tobin or Ali and Ash, we’re not. I’m not going to lose her just because everyone can’t stay out of someone else’s business.”

“I know that, Alyssa. I know,” Christen says quietly, “We’ve all seen what happens when things go wrong. You know that me and Tobin know first hand what’s it like to have things with a teammate go wrong. But we don’t regret it, because even if things didn’t work out, they were still worth it. And you never know if something will work if you don’t try.”

“She doesn’t like me like that,” Alyssa says, “I know she doesn’t. I’m not going to push her away or make her uncomfortable when I know she doesn’t return my… when she doesn’t like me as more than a friend.” Alyssa won’t admit that she really does have feelings for Y/N. Not to Christen and least of all to Y/N herself. Alyssa barely admits it to herself and only in the dark when Christen’s already asleep in the bed beside hers. Feelings complicate things, and the last thing Alyssa needs is complications. She likes structure and order, not feelings and uncertainties. If she needs to push down her real feelings to maintain some semblance of control in her life then so be it.

“I wouldn’t say that.” Alyssa really wishes Christen would just stop talking. “Lys, no one can look at how she is with you and say she doesn’t have feelings for you. She doesn’t act like the same with anyone else as she does with you.”

“That doesn’t mean anything, just drop it.”

“But–”

“Please, Christen.”

“Okay,” Christen says, “But just… Don’t make yourself miserable because you don’t want to take a risk. Sometimes… you need to take risks to be happy. Even if it scares you.” With that, Christen stands up and grabs her room key. “I’m going to go hang out with Tobin for a bit, okay?” Alyssa nods. As soon as the door clicks shut behind Christen, Alyssa sighs and falls back on her bed. Alyssa loves her teammates, she really does, but sometimes she really, really hates them.

“Hey Lyssa,” Y/N says as she walks up to Alyssa in the locker room. Alyssa fights to keep her face neutral; Kelley had taken to teasing Alyssa about how she “lights up” when she sees Y/N, and Alyssa wants her to stop. Preferably before the rest of the team starts doing it too.

“Hey.”

“I was wondering, if you weren’t busy tomorrow, maybe we could go out to dinner?” Y/N asks, almost nervously, although Alyssa doesn’t know why. It’s not like they haven’t hung out before.

“Yeah, sure,” Alyssa says. Y/N grins and lets out a sigh of relief. Weird, Alyssa thinks, but doesn’t ponder it.

“Great! I’ll pick you up at 7?” Y/N asks. Alyssa nods.

Alyssa watches Y/N as she heads back to her own locker. On the way, Y/N trips Sonnett and stealthily snags Julie’s pre-wrap and puts it in Rose’s bag. Alyssa smiles and shakes her head. She knows how serious Julie is about her pre-wrap, how she’ll kill anyone who dared mess with it. God help Rose when Julie realizes it’s missing.

It’s only taken Y/N a few weeks to fit right in with the team, to slot right in as if she’s always been there. Alyssa’s in awe of it, of her. It took Alyssa months to feel like she fit, to feel like she had a place on the team. Even now, there’s moments where she wonders if she really belongs. Sure, Alyssa knows she’s talented enough, they don’t just give anyone the number 1, especially after how good Hope was for years. But, despite her talent, despite the trust the team has in her abilities, it still feels sometimes like she, as a person, doesn’t fit. She’s quiet when they’re loud, subdued when they’re hyper, awkward when they’re relaxed. Alyssa wonders if maybe she was different, more like everyone else, then maybe, just maybe, she would feel more like a part of the team, instead of… just being there.

Somehow, Alyssa doesn’t know how, Y/N’s found a way to balance the craziness of the team with the quiet part of herself, joining in on all the team’s antics, while still having moments of calm and quiet. Alyssa wishes she was like that, wishes she could act the way Y/N does, but she’s not. And maybe that’s okay. Alyssa wants to be different, but on the other hand, she doesn’t really. She can’t imagine changing who she is, not even to fit in. The one thing she wishes she could change is… well, she wishes she was braver. So she would be brave enough to tell Y/N how she feels and be brave enough to handle whatever happens, good or bad.

“Lys, you ready?” Becky asks. Alyssa shakes her head to clear her thoughts.

“Yeah, let’s go.”

“Is that what you’re wearing on your date with Y/N?” Christen asks.

“It’s not a date.”

Of course when Sonnett overheard Alyssa tell Becky that she was having dinner with Y/N, the whole team knew in minutes. Since then, Alyssa’s been avoiding either her teammate’s teasing, or their “helpful” advice.

“Still, it might be nice to dress up a little,” Christen says. Alyssa looks down at her outfit, a tee shirt and jeans, it isn’t fancy by any means but it’s still nice. “You look fine right now, but you could look even better if you just spruce it up a little. Make Y/N never want to take her eyes off you.”

Alyssa is apprehensive. She trusts Christen’s advice more than almost anyone on the team, but… it’s just dinner. Alyssa doesn’t want to be overdressed and make things awkward. On the other hand… it’s tempting to let Christen dress her up and, if she’s right, have Y/N not be able to take her eyes off Alyssa. But still, it’s just dinner. Just two friends going to dinner.

“Okay,” Christen stands up and walks over to Alyssa’s suitcase and starts going through it. “Ooh, these pants are nice,” Christen holds up a pair of Alyssa’s pants, “Not too dressy, but nicer than jeans, okay?” Alyssa, although still hesitant, nods. “And… oh my goodness, Lys, this shirt would be so cute on you!” Christen hands it to her without waiting for Alyssa to say anything. “Okay, go put that on, and I’ll pick out a nice necklace for you to wear. You can even borrow one of mine!” Alyssa starts walking to the bathroom to change when Christen’s voice stops her. “Don’t even think about putting your hair up!”

Alyssa does as she’s told, feeling awkward as she walks out of the bathroom to see Christen looking through a pile of necklaces. Alyssa looks down at her outfit, hoping that she isn’t about to make a giant fool of herself in front of Y/N. It’s just dinner, Alyssa keeps repeating, but no one listens to her.

Alyssa’s nervousness only grows as Christen helps her finish getting ready and every minute she spends waiting for Y/N to knock on her door. Alyssa curses her need to not be late, causing her to always be early. Like now, when she still has 25 minutes before Y/N’s supposed to come get her, and nothing to do but wait.

Finally, with 15 minutes still left to wait, there’s a knock at the door. Alyssa stands with shaky legs and goes to answer it. When Alyssa opens the door, she feels all her breath leave her lungs. Y/N’s pants hug her hips just right and show off every muscle in her legs. She’s wearing a short sleave button up, so her arms are on display and Alyssa can’t help but let her eyes travel from Y/N’s wrists up to her shoulder and along her collar to where Y/N’s left the top few buttons open, drawing Alyssa’s eyes down her chest until they reach the fabric of her shirt. Alyssa can’t seem to pull her eyes up to Y/N’s face, even as her face flushes with embarrassment.

“Wow, Lys,” Y/N sounds as breathless as Alyssa feels, “You look amazing. I’m sorry I’m so early, I just couldn’t wait to see you.”

Alyssa finally tears her eyes away to look down at her shoes. When she lifts her head up, she carefully avoids dwelling anywhere until she’s finally looking at Y/N’s face and just her face. Y/N’s smiling at her, like normal, and her eyes are shining. It feels like a breath of fresh air.

“You look amazing too,” Alyssa says, glad her voice didn’t shake. Y/N’s smile grows bigger, if that was possible, and she holds out her hand for Alyssa to take.

“Shall we go?” Y/N asks. Alyssa nods, taking Y/N’s hand and following her down the hallway.

Alyssa had thought that Y/N was being silly when she offered her hand, and would let go as soon as Alyssa’s door had closed. However, that isn’t the case.

Y/N’s still holding her hand, even as they walk through the lobby and out the hotel doors and down the sidewalk. Y/N holds Alyssa’s hand all the way to the restaurant, only letting go so she can hold the door open for Alyssa, and grabbing it again as soon as she let the door fall closed behind them. She holds Alyssa’s hand all the way through the restaurant, even as Alyssa looks anxiously at everyone around them. She holds Alyssa’s hand as she walks up to their table, as she pulls out Alyssa’s chair for her, and as she sits down herself. Only then does she let go, and Alyssa feels like she can breathe again.

They make small talk as they look through the menus. Every time Alyssa looks over at Y/N, Y/N’s eyes are shining brighter and brighter each time, and Alyssa starts repeating it’s just dinner, it’s just two friends at dinner over and over in her head to keep herself from saying something stupid. Alyssa repeats it even as the way Y/N looks at her makes her believe differently.

While they eat, Y/N asks Alyssa about how she likes Chicago, about her childhood, her sisters (and yes, Alyssa does go off on a ten-minute tangent about her nephew but how can she not?), Y/N asks about just about everything about Alyssa. Alyssa answers every question and Y/N leans closer and closer with each answer, listening intently. Alyssa’s halfway through a funny story about the time her mom caught her helping Amanda sneak out of their bedroom window, when she makes eye contact with Y/N and loses her train of thought. Something about Y/N’s outfit, her demeaner, the look in her eyes, makes Alyssa feel off balance, like she might fall even though she’s sitting down.

It’s just two friends having dinner, nothing more.

When the waiter comes by with the bill, Y/N grabs it before Alyssa can even think of offering to pay for her meal. She tries to protest but Y/N waves her off, handing her credit card to the waiter. Y/N stands up and offers her hand to Alyssa again, but this time Alyssa notices it’s shaking. Y/N leads Alyssa out of the restaurant.

“It’s such a nice night,” Y/N says, “Do you to walk a bit before we head back?” Alyssa nods, not trusting her voice. Somehow, Y/N looks even better under the streetlight than she had in the bright lights of the restaurant. Alyssa can feel herself slipping, slipping and falling into something she can’t come back from, but she does nothing to stop herself.

They walk slowly through the streets, hands swinging between them. They talk about anything, everything, yet the conversation never gets dull. Each new thing Alyssa learns about Y/N feels like the first thing. It’s hard to imagine that this soft spoken girl who cries every time she says goodbye to her mom is the same one who tears up the field in Europe, breaking defenders ankles without a second thought. Eventually, Y/N pulls Alyssa to a stop on a quiet street.

“I’m really glad we did this tonight,” Y/N says.

“Me too.”

“I… I just… I’ve been wanting to ever since we met, but I was just scared, you know?” Y/N says. Alyssa nods even though she doesn’t quite know where Y/N’s going with this. “But I knew that I couldn’t spend my whole life being scared of something that could end up being really good. Like I was terrified to move to Europe, but I knew that it could lead to some really great things, and it did.”

“Winning a few Champions League trophies is pretty good,” Alyssa feels like she might faint.

“Yeah, but I meant that going to Europe, playing for Lyon, doing all those things, it all brought me here, to you.”

Yeah, Alyssa’s definitely going to faint.

“And I’m so lucky, because… Lys, you’re amazing. I… You’re…” Y/N blushes and looks down, “I just can’t imagine that there was ever a point where I didn’t know you. How was I ever happy without having you in my life?” Alyssa swallows deeply. “Do you know what I mean?” Alyssa nods. “I… Is it okay if I kiss you now?” Alyssa blinks and does a quick checklist. She pinches her thigh, nope not dreaming. She’s still looking at Y/N, not the sky, so she hasn’t fainted. Yet. She looks around, there’s no one else there, so Y/N has to be talking to her. Alyssa realizes too late that she’s taking too long to answer.

“Or not? Did I misread this?” Y/N asks nervously, “I’m sorry, we can just forget–”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Yes,” Alyssa repeats, “It’s okay if you kiss me.”

Y/N’s face changes from nervous to elated in an instant. She grins and shimmies her shoulders for a second before she steps closer to Alyssa. So close that Alyssa can smell her shampoo. Y/N places her hand on Alyssa’s cheek gently, still holding Alyssa’s hand in the other. She’s taking her time. Each movement is done individually, like Y/N’s savouring the moment. And, just when Alyssa thinks she might actually faint if Y/N stays this close to her without doing anything, Y/N’s lips touch hers, light at first, then firmer.

Alyssa had expected that kissing Y/N would take her breath away, but just the opposite happens. It’s like Y/N has opened her chest and she can breathe easier than she’s ever had before. Rather than taking her breath away, it’s like Y/N’s breathing into her, like a weight on her chest that Alyssa didn’t know was there has been lifted. After what feels like an eternity and no time at all, Y/N pulls back.

“Was that okay?” She’s still in Alyssa’s space. Alyssa feels the question against her lips more than she hears it, and it’s driving her crazy.

“Yes,” Alyssa breaths out, enjoy the shudder she pulls from Y/N as their lips brush as she talks.

“Okay,” Y/N kisses her again. And again. And again and again and again, until they’re smiling too much to kiss properly. Then, Y/N steps away slightly, just out of Alyssa’s space. Her eyes, Alyssa notes, are brighter than they’ve ever been.

“Do you want to come visit me in Chicago sometime?” The question escapes Alyssa’s mouth before she can stop it.

“I’d love to,” Y/N says, “But I don’t think I’ll need to visit.” Alyssa feels her heart drop to her feet. “It’s not a visit when you live there.” Alyssa just blinks at her, not understanding. “Lys, I was talking to my agent about signing for a team in the NWSL, and he told me Chicago’s interested if I am. And I really, really am.”

“You’re coming to Chicago?” Alyssa asks. Y/N nods. Alyssa kisses her again. And again and again and again, until they definitely missed curfew and will definitely be forced to run laps at practice tomorrow for it. But, even if she has to run laps for the rest of her life, Alyssa doesn’t regret it one little bit.
