Publications of the New World
The James Smith Noel Collection has closed out another exciting exhibit, this time the topic was the New World of the Americas as experienced by Europe and other explorers. The exhibit: Exploration of the New World features the culture and intriguing history of Central and South America as it was experienced in the resources produced in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. We welcomed visitors to the mysterious, ancient rituals of the Pre-Columbian Mayans, the Aztecs of Mexico, and the Incas of Peru. We also showcased the advancements in architecture, science, and community development while marveling at the natural beauty of the regions.
One of the cases displayed a fascinating book which was originally published in Spanish and later translated into English. The edition house in the Noel Collection was published in 1688 of The royal commentaries of Peru, : in two parts. The first part Treating the Original of their Incas or Kings: Of their Idolatry … by Garcilaso de la Vega. Vega wrote a pivotal account of Incan history. Vega has a unique personal connection to the Incan world being a descendant of royal Incan lineage. He was half Spanish and Incan, his father being Spanish, and he chronicled Incan history, culture, and destruction as a result of the Spanish conquest. We featured a portion of text that discussed the minerals, precious metals, and natural resources found in Peru, such as, gold, silver, and mercury or quicksilver.
Vega was born as Gómez Suárez de Figueroa in April of 1539, and became known as El Inca. He ventured to Spain when he was 21 where he obtained an informal education and remained until his death in April of 1616. His father died in 1559 and Vega relocated to Spain two years later to seek acknowledgement as the natural son of the Spanish conquistador. His paternal uncle became his protector. While he primarily wrote on the Incan civilization, Spanish conquest, and an account of De Soto’s exploration of Florida.
Gómez Suárez de Figueroa was born in Cuzco, Peru; his father is recorded as being Sabastian Garcilaso de la Vega y Vargas, a Spanish captain, and his mother was Palla Chimpu Ocllo. When his mother was baptized after the fall of Cuzo and renamed Isabel Suarez Chimpu Ocllo, she was descended from Inca nobility, the daughter of Tupac Huallap and granddaughter of Tupac Yupanqui. Vega’s parents were not married in the Catholic church, resulting in his birth being considered illegitimate and he was given his mother’s surname. Vega was a child when his father left and married a younger Spanish noblewoman. His mother married and had two daughters. His first language was Quechua but learned Spanish as a child.
After moving to Spain, he received a European education and the works he produced was considered to have great literary value. He traveled to Montilla and met his father’s brother, Alonso de Vargas, who took him as his protector to help Vega make his way. He traveled to Madrid and petitioned the crown for acknowledgement. He was allowed the name of Garcilaso de la Vega, or "El Inca" or "Inca Garcilaso de la Vega" due to his mixed heritage. He had first-hand experience of the daily-life of the Inca life which heavily influenced his writings. His education allowed him to accurately describe the political system, labor force, and social life of the Incan empire.

An Oakland, California, community is in shock after repeatedly seeing groups of suspected prostitutes and human trafficking victims reportedly soliciting outside a Catholic grade school.
"I get the call saying – 'Mr. Gallo, I can't get into my home because the pimp is blocking my driveway,'" Oakland City Councilman Noel Gallo told ABC 7 of the weekly calls he receives from residents in East Oakland. "It's constant."
The Oakland Police Department is beefing up patrols outside St. Anthony's K-8 Catholic school after parents and school leaders sounded the alarm on the young, scantily-clad women and girls they see walking near East 15th Street in Oakland.
Last week, ABC 7 reported that as parents arrived at the grade school on Monday morning, a suspected prostitute was already near the school, apparently soliciting right in front of the school’s gate. However, the scene is not uncommon.

"It's every day, during all periods of the day," local mom Rosa Vargas told the outlet.
Vargas said the women are typically wearing skimpy outfits, even sometimes naked, and often standing right in front of the gate of the school. Pimps have even followed Vargas down the street on a couple of occasions, she said.

Nearby International Boulevard has long been plagued with prostitution and other crimes, but construction on East 12th Street has pushed the prostitutes into residential neighborhoods, ABC 7 reported.
Some of the girls are only 15 or 16 years old, according to Gallo, which has set off concerns of human trafficking.
"We've seen up to 20 women walking up and down this street," Gallo said. "Young, young girls."

Rodney Pierre-Antoine, who oversees a network of local Catholic elementary schools, including St. Anthony’s, said police are left in a tough spot to take care of the situation, citing a recently-enacted bill that prohibits officers from arresting people on the suspicion of prostitution.
"Their hands are somewhat handcuffed," said Pierre-Antoine.
The bill, authored by Democratic state Sen. Scott Wiener, was aimed at protecting transgender women who Wiener said are disproportionately targeted by police. The law took effect on Jan. 1.
Local police have since sounded off that the bill prevents them from rescuing young girls who have been trafficked, ABC 7 reported.

"That is absolutely dead wrong. SB 357 has been in effect for 30 days, this problem has been around a lot longer. So I think it's a cop-out frankly for the police to say this law, which is brand new, is preventing them from doing anything," Wiener told ABC7 when asked about concerns from police.
After the outlet reported concerns over human trafficking and prostitution near a school, the FBI said it will install additional surveillance cameras in the area, according to Gallo. An official with the FBI added in a comment to ABC7 that the suspected trafficking might be gang related.
"In many large cities you have places that's called the stroll or the walk, this is where the transaction is taking place," said Robert Tripp, the special agent in charge for the FBI's San Francisco division.
"Usually the trafficker and the person in charge are one in the same," Tripp said. "This crime depends so much on the relationship between the abuser and the victim. It's a very compact chain of command."

Sources told the outlet that the FBI already picked up one 13-year-old girl off of East 15th Street.
Gallo said he accompanied police on a ride-along to witness the prostitution and saw a van with Nevada plates roll into the area early in the morning and leave at night.
"When I was out on the street with police on a ride-along, I saw the van pull up and I saw license plates from Nevada. They were being brought up from outside Nevada... I saw five, six girls get out of the van," Gallo said.
"Eight o'clock in the evening, I saw them all get back into the van, drive on, and we followed them and they went on the freeway and went on," said Gallo.
Fox News Digital reached out to St. Anthony’s school, the FBI, the Oakland PD, and Wiener on Monday morning but did not immediately receive replies for additional comment.

La Navidad es una época para compartir y disfrutar sin importar la edad, un hombre dejo salir el niño que lleva por dentro luego de recibir, de parte de Santa Claus, un anhelado regalo que siempre pidió, pero que por muchas circunstancias no pudo tener en el momento.
Después de más de 55 años, a través de las redes sociales, se viralizó el video en el cual un hombre recibe la alegría de la Navidad.
La sorpresa vino acompañada de una carta, que leyó su hija.
"¡Querido Lalito! No importa cuánto tiempo puede pasar para cumplir un sueño. Hoy después de muchos años pedo cumplir mi promesa contigo que me pediste desde que eras un niño, quiero que lo abras, juegues con él. Siempre supe que querías uno. Te hace mucha ilusión tenerlo y armarlo".
El hombre permanece sentado mientras su hija lee toda la carta, hasta que por las pistas logra reconocer que su regalo anhelado era el tren del Expreso Polar. "Un tren", comentó feliz.
Asimismo, en la carta le pide que nunca deje de creer en la magia de su corazón y el amor que tiene su familia para él.
"Nunca dejes de ser ese niño trabajador que siempre vi crecer y te convertiste en el hombre que eres hoy. Sonríe siempre y jamás dejes de creer en la Navidad", finaliza.
La alegría del hombre es indescriptible, luego se ve armando su tren y feliz mientras lo acelera.
En las redes sociales muchos mensajes como "por mas adulto que sea el hombre siempre tendrá esa semilla adentro de ser un niño con cualquier cosa" y "Una familia que siempre escucho sus sueños, seguramente sea el mejor regalo, pero una que sean cuales fueran esos sueños, ayudan a cumplirlos es una bendición".
"Todavía no le encuentro una razón o explicación pero el tren tiene una cierta magia por la que todo niño alguna vez pidió uno a Papá Noel" y "El de mi papito también era un tren y cuando se lo regalamos su carita se ilumino como nunca… Lejos la mejor sensación", comentaron los usuarios.
