Gogu: Apart from the movie Jagat, I don’t see many clear attempts in Malaysian Tamil cinema to explore our identity. Nevertheless, I draw immense inspiration from other Malaysian filmmakers like Tan Chui Mui, Yeo Joon Han, U-Wei, and Dain Said. Their intimate films delve deep into the psyche of society, raising thought-provoking questions for the audience. It’s truly empowering to witness yourself, your community, and your landscape represented in films. It validates our existence, our joy, our dreams, and the personal struggles we go through.  One thing that truly fascinates me in Southeast Asian films is how they beautifully portray our local beliefs and magic. Our region has a rich history filled with rituals, ghosts, and myths, and seeing them come to life on the screen adds a unique touch to the storytelling, specific to this part of the world.  Moreover, there’s a naturally slow pace in our region, which Indonesians would call “santai.” It’s during these unhurried, laid-back moments that we reflect on our lives. However, this inherent rhythm is being disrupted by new fast-paced narratives and modern technology. Some fantastic filmmakers from our region, like Apitchapong and Lav Diaz, are constantly fighting against this trend. They strive to bring back alignment and harmony in our thoughts through their work.

Ayyappa
Shaatish Rajendran wrote : At age 12, the king wanted to formally invest Manikantha as the heir prince (yuvaraja). However, the queen under the influence of an evil minister objected. The minister had advised the queen that only her younger biological child should be the next king.
The younger child was disabled and lacked the ability to perform the duties of the king, something that the scheming evil minister thought would make him the de facto ruler. The minister persuaded the queen to feign an illness, ask for "tiger's milk" to cure her illness and demand that Manikantha be sent to get the milk from the forest.
Manikantha volunteers, goes into the forest and returns riding a tigress. The king, realising Manikantha's special ability recognizes the adopted son to be a divine being, resolves to make a shrine for him. For location, Manikantha shoots an arrow that lands thirty kilometers away. The young boy then transforms into Ayyappan.
The place where arrow landed is now an Ayyappa shrine, a site of a major pilgrimage that is particularly popular for visits on Makara Sankranti Manikanda. (via Facebook: Shaatish Rajendran)

Poornima Indrajith is a revelation in the Malayalam film ‘Thuramukham’
Poornima Indrajith is a revelation in Rajeev Ravi’s Thuramukham. The actor effortlessly, and convincingly, traverses the journey from a young, hopeful mother of three in her thirties to an ageing woman who is losing everything she holds dear. Her understated performance is consistent, her eyes and body become tools to convey a kaleidoscope of emotions and experiences far removed from what a woman…

Manorama News Conclave | Why change in politicians' language? Blame it on dark age, globalisation, aptitude shift
Manorama News Conclave | Why change in politicians’ language? Blame it on dark age, globalisation, aptitude shift
Thrissur: The language of politicians in Kerala has changed, unfortunately not for the good. Congress leader V D Satheesan blames it on what he calls ‘the dark age’ we live in, while CPI’s Kanam Rajendran says it is part of the ill-effects of globalisation. A third view, shared by BJP’s V Muraleedharan, is that the changes in the political diction is only a reflection of the shift in society’s…

Gogu: Even after independence, the Tamils continued to be managed similarly to the colonial times. European estate managers remained involved in Malaysian plantations, and the political direction and policies of Malaysia did not undergo significant shifts from the colonial period to benefit the Indians.  As indentured labourers, the Tamils were seen as mere tools for profit and deliberately dehumanised. The oppression they faced was evident in every aspect of plantation life. From the regimental morning roll-call to the hierarchical divisions based on caste, from the promotion of toddy consumption to destroy their consciousness to the extremely small and substandard housing, and from being kept separate from the development of the new nation to limited access to education, everything was cunningly designed to strip away their self-respect and dignity, keeping them as ignorant slaves. Sadly, many Tamils were unaware of the extent of their oppression, as they were kept comfortable enough not to revolt.  It is indeed heartbreaking to see the lasting impact of the oppressive system on Tamil communities even today. Despite advancements in wealth, the chains of oppression have not been fully broken. The slave mentality still persists, hindering our ability to realise our true potential and independence. In the realm of arts, we continue to be enslaved to the influences of South Indian cinema and Hollywood, preventing us from exploring the true meaning of our existence in this land. I think when the Malaysian Tamils watch themselves represented truthfully in cinema, one step towards finding our identity would be taken. We must reclaim our narrative; that is our liberation!

The Other 'Kalki' - T. Sadasivam and the origins of the 'Kalki' magazine
Thiagaraja Sadasivam, better known as 'Kalki' Sadasivam, was an Indian freedom fighter, singer, journalist and film producer. In his later years, he'd come to be more well known as the husband of the renowned musician M.S. Subbulakshmi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
R. Krishnamurthy, better known as Kalki, was a Tamil writer, journalist, poet, critic and Indian independence activist who wrote under several pen-names like Tumbi, Tamil Teni, Karnatakam, Langulan, Agastyar, Ra Ki, Yaman, Vivasayi, Petron, Guhan, Tamil Magan, etc. but what captured his readers' fancy is the pseudonym 'Kalki'.
Tumblr media
T. Sadasivam and R. Krishnamurthy worked at Gemini Vasan's (who owned the legendary Gemini Studios as well) 'Ananda Vikatan' in 1930s but both left the magazine in the late 1930s, due to personal (Sadasivam's marriage with MS was scandalous for the times) and political (Vasan often got into trouble with the British government due to Krishnamurthy's works) reasons.
Tumblr media
From T. J. S. George's M.S Subbulakshmi: The Definitive Biography :
Sadasivam must have admired his own luck at that point. For he had not only the most marketable literary property at his disposal but also the most valuable musical property as well . . . With Rajagopalachari giving his approval to the idea, all three were inspired to take the plunge.

Rajaji, M S Subbulakshmi, Sadasivam
The name of the magazine suggested itself. Krishnamurthi’s writings had spread his pen name ‘Kalki’ so far and wide that Kalki as a magazine title would have the priceless advantage of instant recognition. That indeed turned out to be the case. Not only the originator of the pen name but also the manager-proprietor too would henceforth be identified by the magazine’s name; they would always be known as Kalki Krishnamurthi and Kalki Sadasivam.
Thanks to MS’s film successes, he found many a wealthy financier knocking at his doors ready to invest in her. But Sadasivam was not open to their ideas; they had to be open to his. Such a stipulation kept potential investors at bay until a film director named Y. V. Rao came along. His idea sounded preposterous . . . He would make up the shortfall in the Kalki capital, he said, if Subbulakshmi would act as Narada in a film he was planning to make, titled Savithri. Sadasivam felt scandalized. MS as a male character!
For Rao that was precisely the point. MS in male attire would act as an irresistible magnet for the masses . . . After holding discussions with Rajaji and Krishnamurthi and after making a few teasing references to the idea in conversation with MS herself, Sadasivam said yes to Rao . . .
Tumblr media
The first issue of Kalki
It took no time for Kalki to make a mark. That period was characterized by tremendous turbulence as a result of the war in Europe and Asia and the independence movement in India entering decisive phases. . . . Every day was a news day. The public appetite was keen for both incisive political commentaries and elevating literary works. Kalki Krishnamurthi’s pen satisfied the popular taste. Sadasivam’s managerial prowess found new inspiration in proprietorship. Combining creative credibility with entrepreneurial vitality, Kalki quickly grew into a part of Tamil history. Krishnamurthi, Sadasivam and Subbulakshmi, with Rajagopalachari hovering as a ‘presiding deity’, symbolized the vanguard of a virtual cultural renaissance in the Brahminic world of Madras. It would reach a peak with new historical novels appearing in a serialized form in the pages of the magazine—Ponniyin Selvan and Sivakamiyin Sapatham.
Krishnamurthy's daughter Anandi was married to Sadasivam's nephew Ramachandran and Sadasivam's daughter Vijaya was married to Krishnamurthy's son Rajendran.
