man if i had infinite patience to animate i would definitely try my hand at keys for some chainsaw man scenes
#d.txt#here are my thoughts on the anime#my friends got me into it cause we all cosplayed from it and i saw the anime first then was like fuck i gotta read this#i think the anime is very beautiful and especially the scenery is really lovely in some of the scenes#i do think the acting is pretty lacking though . denji is pretty good but aki is really falling short for me sadly (acting as in animation#acting not va)#the pacing is another thing but honestly i think that could be solved with better acting because as an animator i think of myself as an#actor as well like imm making the timing based off of the characters and stuff#i thought the cig scene with ghost and aki was esp disappointing sadly :((#there are also some very strange shots like the himeno flashing ?? one in the last ep and the weird denji rotoscope and#overall it seems like there was definitely a focus on frame counts and “smoothness ” which i never like to have when im animating#the smoothness should come from impact and timing not from frame counts yk#anyway ive been rewatching eizouken alongside csm and it really makes me think abt animation a lot and its such a beautiful show waaaa#id love to try my hand at that aki scene or maybe a makima scene#i feel like my approach would be very simplistic and mostly about the things we dont get to see but we feel in the manga .#basically . acting teehee#sorry im insane about animation also i rlly rlly like csm and the anime is dope as hell so i wanan like . idk do a tribute to everythingcsm

Spiritbox - Rotoscope 2022
Spiritbox is a Canadian heavy metal band. Their style incorporates electronic elements and draws from a variety of influences, crossing multiple metal subgenres with its roots in metalcore and progressive metal. They released a debut extended play, Spiritbox (2017), followed by a second EP, Singles Collection (2019), with an expanded lineup. Spiritbox initially built their fanbase by focusing on promotion through the Internet and introduced their music through a series of popular music videos, before debuting as a touring band in 2020. They continued to gain popularity with several singles that reached the Billboard charts before releasing their debut album Eternal Blue (2021), which entered the US Billboard 200 at number 13. They released their third EP, Rotoscope, in 2022 and their fourth EP, The Fear of Fear, in 2023. "Rotoscope" received a total of 46,8% yes votes.

SPIRITBOX ANNOUNCE NEW EP, DEBUT CRUSHING SINGLE "JADED"
Canuck rising stars give first taste of 'The Fear of Fear'
Feel that chill in the air? It's Spiritbox season, motherfucker. The Canuck alt-metal rising stars have announced a brand new EP called The Fear of Fear, which is set to arrive later this fall.
The six-track project includes their April 2023 single "The Void," as well as the brand new song they dropped today, "Jaded," which is signature Spiritbox through and through, from the concussive, djent-inflected riffery to Courtney LaPlante's high-flying vocals. Watch the music video for "Jaded" above via YouTube.
The Fear of Fear follows Spiritbox's three-song 2022 EP, Rotoscope, and is their first substantial project since their 2021 debut album, Eternal Blue.
The full EP arrives November 3rd via Rise Records/Pale Chord. You can pre-order it in an exclusive, limited-edition splatter vinyl colorway at Revolver's shop.

Courtney LaPlante Reassures Fans That Spiritbox is Still Working on New Music
Tumblr media
Back at the start of the month, Courtney LaPlante further confirmed that Spiritbox‘s white-hot run around the world wasn’t going to end any time soon with the advent of new music. Saying at the time that fans would be “pleasantly surprised this year,” it pretty much confirmed that the band is still eyeballing a 2023 release of some new tunes.
Well, during a recent interview with NME, it sounds like the plan to release their follow up to last year’s Rotoscope EP and their second full-length release since 2021’s Eternal Blue is still in the cards. And it sounds like the fact that they have a new album in the works means she’s already thinking about the release after that.
“It’s funny because we’ve written new stuff – I already want to write new stuff and outdo that. And I want to challenge myself to do that. Ultimately, it’s all like, free therapy, writing…. I’m trying to keep it like that, not thinking about what our fans want to hear, or what you guys want to hear from us, just what comes out. My mindset is: ‘Does it make me feel happy to get this message out and feel good to sing? Awesome. Let’s cut it and put it on there.’”
LaPlante also spoke of the band’s current writing process, having now written and released new material nearly every year since 2017 (they didn’t release anything in 2020).
One area, she said, was how she was now handling the band’s lyrics. Rather than being obtuse for no reason, she said she’s more open to “being a little bit more literal” in the words she chooses.
“I’m starting to feel more comfortable being a little bit more literal in songs. Hiding behind metaphors is safer, but it’s also a little pretentious, because you’re not really having to commit to what you’re saying. You’re just writing something and you’re not really worrying about, ‘Does it connect to verse one and the chorus and verse two? And is the full song something that you’re actually trying to say?’ I think I’m getting better at that. And then [guitarist Mike Stringer], he just gets better and better at writing songs. So I have a lot to live up to because he’ll present me with this song that I love.”
Whenever Spiritbox eventually drops new music, it’s sure to cause a stir. They’ve only got a few months left in 2023 to stay within this apparent timeline, so once we know more, we’ll be sure to follow it up here.

Spiritbox - The Fear Of Fear
If you haven’t looked at my previous review, which is a retrospective / review on Spiritbox’s debut album, 2021’s Eternal Blue, definitely do so, because I don’t want this review to be as long and rambling as that was, although I had a reason for that. I wanted to dig deep into that record, but long story short (and if you don’t have time to dig into that piece), Eternal Blue is one of the best albums of the 2020s, and it’s also one of the most unique albums of the last few years. They took elements of djent, prog-metalcore, and alternative-metal, and made a heavy yet accessible record that feels like it could be a gateway record for people. It was also the first record in a few years that I really fell in love with; I hadn’t listened to any new music in a few years and I wanted to get into some new stuff, but this record blew me away. It was also the first album in a long time that inspired me to write again.
Needless to say, I’ve been anxious for what this band is going to do next, and whether or not it’ll top Eternal Blue. I don’t normally have those types of expectations, but when it comes to a very talented and unique band like this one, I do. Spiritbox is my favorite of this decade so far, especially newer bands, and I’ve been eagerly awaiting new stuff. We did get an EP last year, although it was just a short three-song project entitled Rotoscope, and it wasn’t anything too special, as it felt like leftovers from Eternal Blue, but it did showcase their alt-metal side more. I’ve gone back to it recently and it’s better than I remember, but when they announced The Fear Of Fear, their new EP, I was excited beyond belief.
I’m so happy to say that the excitement was worth it, because this EP is amazing. It’s one of the best records of the year, and that’s not just because I love this band, but this is what I wanted from them, and what I knew they could do. The Fear Of Fear expands on their sound that takes on djent, metalcore, and alt-metal. It does something more with it, and takes their sound to new heights. There’s also a lot of variety and versatility to this EP, as the opening track, “Cellar Door,” as well as “Angel Eyes,” are a couple of the heaviest tracks that they’ve ever done, but “Ultraviolet,” and “Too Close / Too Late” are some of the most melodic and accessible. Songs like “Jaded” and “The Void” are right in the middle, and they serve a good purpose.
The performances are great across the board, especially vocalist Courtney LaPlante, who sounds the best she ever has here. The instrumentation is great, too, as some of the riffs and breakdowns are some of my favorites. “Jaded” is one of my favorite Spiritbox songs period, and it’s awesome that it’s nominated for a Grammy. Same with “Angel Eyes,” it’s one of my favorite riffs that they’ve done and it’s one of the heaviest songs they’ve put out. It’s awesome hearing them get that heavy, but it works so well.
The main issue that I have with this EP is that it’s too short. It’s 25 minutes, which is a good length, but it’s too short. You know it’s not bad when the biggest problem with an album is that it’s too short and you want more. I wish this was a full length, but quality over quantity. I’m glad they put out an EP’s worth of songs that are very good, versus an album of songs that are mediocre. I’ll take that any day, and they certainly deliver on that. This EP was worth the wait and it’s one of the best of the year. If you haven’t gotten on board with this band yet, now’s the time. I hope they win that Grammy, although it might it not happen, because they usually give the Grammy to the established acts, and this year has all established acts but one. Even so, this EP is one of my top albums of the year, and I’m so happy that they really delivered with an utterly amazing record.

behind the curtain ep 4
bit late with this one but i wanted to finish laundry first so here we go.. notes on this bitch
Tumblr media
right off the bat, yes! i did rotoscoping!
what! after avoiding it since 2017!! shoutout to jennifer @antoniosvivaldi for inspiring me to do that, btw. you should absolutely check out her stuff if you haven't already--her style is so unique and refreshing!
for the most part, i think they turned out swell--after effects behaved itself for once, which like, thank fuck, because i was on a call with fio @maranello and others at 1 in the morning like "haha! i totally know what i'm doing!" narrator voice they did NOT know what they were doing, they were making educated guesses based on past horrible experiences (hence avoiding rotoscoping for years 💀).
but this is meant to be educational lol so! what is rotoscoping? simply put, it's a tracing technique. it has its roots way back in animation when tech was starting to pick up in like the 1920s and artists wanted a more efficient way of animating. rotoscoping is one of those tools that've been used differently from how it was originally intended, which is actually? so cool from like, a media arts study perspective?? because it's commonplace to use it for live-action film and vfx work as a way to mask scenes out and isolate them in addition to its original use of mapping things to isolated scenes. i won't bore you with the stuart hall encoding/decoding stuff, but just know that i find the development of digital art circa adobe dominance fascinating. i am using this century-old animation technique to impose my blorbo upon the eyes of thousands.
ANYWAY. i really liked this particular mask--it has a lot of movement but still manages to flow nicely?

me: [cuts off luke's arm] fio: i think that's his arm me: oh... my god
next up: the lightsaber
goodness. where do i start. well first of all i had a vision of something much more 2d when it comes to lightsaber anatomy, lol. but i extended my subscription for maxon and figured--why not take full advantage of this while i've still got it? so i got this 3d model of luke's lightsaber. it's untextured and unrigged and clunky but thankfully it had most of the inner parts so as far as i'm concerned i struck GOLD.
idk what i can really say in terms of like What Is 3d Modelling, because i think people have an understanding of that. so we'll go instead thru my process!
i added materials and added a null object (does that count as rigging? for something as straightforward as this?) to do a simple rotation animation on the first day...
Tumblr media
and then i had an idea before bed to separate the parts like that one scene in the clone wars where they show how a lightsaber is assembled, except i haven't watched the scene so god knows how they animated it NKJFGNDFKJGDF. anyway the day after, this was kinda where i got:
Tumblr media
keyframing on c4d is a Bitch because u can't just Access The Graph Editor you have to go through the dope sheet and change ur views and it's just. annoying!! coming from an after effects standpoint! but i can see how it's optimized for Actual Animation work so ughgh. we deal. onwards..
asked the team over at usergif and natalie @kenobiis suggested putting in a kyber crystal to fill out the middle. i ended up taking the og "laser" cylinder and modifying/animating it because uh THIS is the real inside of a lightsaber and i am not putting all that into a 3 second gif LMAO. but yeah i fine-tuned the animation and plopped it in after effects, then fiddled with video copilot's saber to make luke's blade.
Tumblr media
u might notice the motion blur--that's re:vision's RSMB! i also added a little bit of depth of field with frischluft, but it doesn't show up well in gif form. speaking of things that don't render well:
there is A FUCK TON of aliasing going on. i couldn't make any anti-aliasing settings work for some reason so i ended up trying to smooth it out in ae.. to probably not a lot of effect. i got the very edges around it smoothed out with the classic gaussian blur and a matte choker method, but the black rings are killer. ugh. it's whatever, i figure i'll work something better out for the next time.
finished animation in c4d + the final gif:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the rest
everything else is fairly basic and intuitive i think? obviously used shape layers + alpha mattes, my beloved. i fucked up a little on the text because i think i made my offset keyframes backwards somewhere in the middle of the process but at that point i was too lazy to go back in and fix it. oops!
anyway if u got this far hello thank u i hope this was informative in some way. if u have any questions don't be afraid to ask :D
