wada sez: Breakdown’s Budiansky profile reads: “When Breakdown is in his car mode, he thinks everyone else is staring at him. [...] The root of his concerns is that someone will see him for what he really is - an alien on a strange world. [...] Often Breakdown's extreme self-consciousness negatively affects his performance, particularly in his role as a scout in which he must venture into numerous tension-producing situations.”

wada sez: This strip had the preliminary title of "The Gimmick". The Autobots appear in their humanized designs from the “Human Error” two-parter, though things escalate into incorporating tons of weird gimmicks from the franchise’s history. Safeguard is namedropped in dialogue, the combined form of twins Jetfire and Jetstorm, and the only combiner to appear in Animated. Clean colors below.

wada sez: Roy Stiffey was evidently a big fan of Beast Wars, and worked on tons of strips featuring toy-only characters from the series—though they’re not really serialised in any way, so I’m not bunching them up for this new archive like I sometimes do. The twist here is that the Insecticons are actually named after the Beast Wars character Insecticon! They appear prior to their arrival on Earth without any of their beast-mode kibble. Per Bashar on deviantART: “I always wondered why some of the BW figures had generic names? ie..Dinobot, Insecticon. So this was just my idea for an explanation.” A couple of panels featuring a transformation for Prowl were cut to make more room for dialogue; you can find the sketches below. Stiffey would produce character models for basically all of his strips, so there’s also a ton of those below—including one for Silverbolt, who didn’t actually appear in any of the final comics, just for completion.

Transformers: Mosaic #538 - "Lament"
Originally posted on September 3rd, 2010
Story, Script, Letters - Seb Script - HdE Art - Roy Stiffey
deviantART | Seibertron | TFW2005 | BotTalk
wada sez: This Crosscut spotlight is absolutely the funniest Mosaic I've read in ages. On deviantART, Seb said: “Well, my dictionary defines 'soliloquy' as "the act of a character speaking to himself so as to reveal his thought to the audience" (whereas 'colloquy' would be a regular conversation between 2 parties). Technically, Crosscut doesn't 'speak' here, which makes this a 'monologue' instead of 'soliloquy', but since the piece is all about big words, the latter one sounds way more 'literate' ;p”. HdE added: “With LAST STAND OF THE WRECKERS, Roche and Roberts gave us the horrors of war, musings on insanity, sacrifice, betrayal and a huge helping of death and destruction. With LAMENT, Seb and HdE give their audience... big words. And waffle. Lots of waffle. Mmm... waffles... [...] Our intention here was to put Crosscut over as being far-too-verbose and serious for his own good. But hopefully, you can still feel a pang of pity for him at the end.” See below for a mirrored version of Seb’s full commentary for the strip, originally shared to his own deviantART account, along with clean colors and even an Italian translation.
Now to explain the not-so-pure motivation behind this piece, sigh.... :) Mainly, there are two reasons:
1) I was always amazed (not always positively) by how TF fandom takes pride in (sometimes even competitive) knowledge of insanely obscure trivia, situations and characters from within the franchise. In 25+ years, said franchise has accumulated an insane number of somethings than can, depending on the case in question, be labeled as a character, "character", pitiful excuse for a "character", and pitiful excuse for a word "character". No matter, for as long as someone is "official" (appeared in some officially sanctioned part of the franchise), poor he/she/it "deserves some love", regardless of the fact that 2 minutes of someone's mental effort can result in a MUCH better "character".
This is only partly "derogatory", for I myself indulge in such things. I'm poking fun at myself as well. :D
Now, I knew this had to be pulled of with a Mosaic starring Crosscut - a (let's face it) pitiful excuse for a word "character" who appeared only on 2 panels of a Marvel TF issue from '86, the first one depicting him in a glow of energy while testing the Space bridge, the second one depicting him explode into pieces due to Bridge's faulty fuel line....but one thing had set him apart from all the others "hi-then-die" guys - he was NAMED.
So, the idea was giving that sorry li'l dude a back-story most profound, not knowing what it'll be. And it waited....
2) I had a discussion with HdE about overly serious and over-the-top writing bursting with pathos that can be seen in writing in general, and how a whole lotta NOTHING can be disguised with big, dramatic words. The talk (d)evolved into a hilarious exchange of pretentious and verbose pseudo-poetic ramblings, and thus the idea of Crosscut the Poet was born!
I compiled that pompous mumbo-jumbo, adapted it for the situation, added quite an amount of equally verbose pretentious fillers, distributed it among the panels and sent the draft to HdE. He Shakespeare-ized the ramblings even further (which I didn't think was possible, but it was!), added several additional juicy passages, and VOILA!
All the script needed was master Roy to bring this fragile beauty and innocent vulnerability to life! :)
...and here it is - a blank slate given the deepest depth imaginable. ;)

wada sez: This strip metafictionally draws a parallel between the manufacturers of the Transformers from the Sunbow cartoon (the Quintessons) and in real life (Hasbro), as a way of critiquing common fandom discourse. A preliminary title for this strip was apparently "Fandom Rage". I’m not exactly sure why Reflector and Bludgeon were chosen as stand-ins for the fans. Presumably coincidentally, less than a week after its publication, on October 10th, the first episode of the Flash-animated cartoon My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic aired on The Hub, and almost immediately took over the internet. Flat colors below.

wada sez: Based on the artist's comment on deviantART that the strip included (amongst others) an Energon character, we can deduce that the barely-visible bartender—with its fanged mouth and tendrils—is actually Alpha Quintesson! Stiffey also remarked that the color palette for the strip was inspired by Coruscant in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones. In terms of the narrative content, it seems like Snarl and Air Hammer were basically pulled out of a hat for the story Bashar wanted to tell. Along with the preview for the strip (which I believe is solely the colors for the first panel, without the lines visible), Stiffey’s character models for Air Hammer, Antagony, and Airazor are included below.

wada sez: You may recall previous strips by Waseem Bashar have also leaned into the Beast Machines premise of Cybertron’s organic core. This one features a proper motley crew of characters, including some Inhumanoids! I've tagged the bird in the top-left of the bottom panel as Energon Divebomb, specifically the blue redeco thereof, but I'm not actually sure, he's freaking tiny. Feel free to peruse the massive assortment of clean panels and character models created by Roy S. below!

Transformers: Mosaic #487 - "Beast Wars: Loose Ends"
Originally posted on May 28th, 2010
Story - Zac DeBoard Art - Roy Stiffey Letters - Franco Villa Edits - Juan Pablo Osorio Thanks to - Josh van Reyk
deviantART | Seibertron | TFW2005
Later revised and annotated for Transformers: The Lost Seasons
wada sez: This is a sequel to "Charge" by Josh van Reyk, hence the acknowledgement. Stiffey’s involvement and the inclusion of the character of Insecticon calls back to the otherwise-unrelated strip “Disturbing the Nest”. The strip serves to reintroduce Terrorsaur and Scorponok, who were unceremoniously killed off in “Aftermath”, the start of the show’s second season, to reallocate budget towards new characters and redesigns. As they fell into the lava, they were shown beginning to mutate under the effects of the quantum surge, so this strip follows up on that by using their toy-only Transmetal forms. It seems that the writer had only learned of Scorponok’s Transmetal form from the Beast Wars Sourcebook, unaware that it originated as a McDonalds Happy Meal toy. Iguanus is female here, at Villa’s suggestion: “That's my personal contribute to the plot :) I though that Iguanus was a "she" since IDW's first BW miniseries by Figueroa and Furman. Don't know why ^^”. The name “Iguaness” was slightly revised from Stiffey’s suggestion for the character, “Iguaniss”. Obviously, as she has no speaking role in the comic, the extent of the effect this has on the strip is that she appears with boobs and lipstick; you can check out all of Stiffey’s designs below. Zac DeBoard’s original script was slightly different to the finished product; I’ve also reproduced that below with his notes. Fair warning, we’re about to get a bunch of Franco Villa strips in a row; per a later comment of his on TFW2005: “I'm afraid I clogged the project and I'm very sorry for this: I made some timing mistakes in sending the pieces and I ended up piling them up in a very short time span. After this bulk, however, I slowed down everything, in order to give room back to other authors (as it must be).”

Panel 1.
(A three fingered metallic clawed hand is digging through what looks like rock.)
CAPTION: It took us stellar cycles to dig our way out of the hardened magma.
Panel 2.
(another image of the hand, this time showing more of the arm.  This is transmetal Terrorsaur.  Nearby another arm, golden, and mechanical with a scorpion claw at the end is digging at another area.  This is transmetal Scorponok)
CAPTION: Chances are we've been presumed dead by Maximal and Predacon alike.
CAPTION: If that quantum surge hadn't hit the two of us before we fell into the lava, we would be.
Panel 3.
(Here there would be a flashback image of Terrorsaur and Scorponok falling into the lava as the Transwarp energy that created the Transmetals washes over them)
CAPTION: But now we have returned and both Primal and Megatron will suffer our wrath.
Panel 4.
Terrorsaur and Scorponok are free.  They are in the ruins of the Darksyde.  Terrorsaur has his hands up in the air as if he was claiming victory. Before he can act further, he and Scorponok find themselves surrounded by LioConvoy and the newest incarnation of the Pack (*see notes)
WASPINATOR: "Waspinator do good?"
LIOCONVOY:  "Your knowledge of the planet and your former comrades has been invaluable. Although I'm quite surprised to find these Preds functioning"
TERRORSAUR:  "What the Pit is this?"
LIOCONVOY: "The Beast Wars have been over for years.  We're just here to tidy up loose ends and preserve history. Surrender and come peacefully or fight and come in pieces."
Panel 5.
Terrorsaur and Scorponok raise there hands in surrender.  Terrorsaur sighs.
TERRORSAUR: I should've stayed in stasis lock..." This is the original version of the Beast Wars story I wanted to do for Mosaic. We are going in a slightly different direction with it, so, once I had permission, I thought I would post it and let you guys read it. Lemme know what you think.
This is written as it would be for an actual Mosaic, with Panel descriptions and what not. These are the original notes I wrote.
NOTES: Scorponok is based on his transmetal form from the Beast Wars Sourcebook although his head would be closer in looks to his original.
Maybe as the 2 Preds are coming out of the lava, Megatron's rubber duckie could be laying on the ground.
The Pack...since this takes place after Beast Machines they would all have the new Maximal badge
The new Pack would consist of original members Longrack, Break, Stampy, Mach Kick and LioConvoy (who would appear here in his Lio Prime form which is the Leobreaker mold with the Lioconvoy colors) also Grimlock and transmetal Waspinator who would also now have a maximal badge as well
I have this picture in my head of Stampy holding a huge weapon...like bigger than he is.

Transformers: Mosaic #510 - "How I Met The Autobots"
Originally posted on June 30th, 2010

deviantART | Seibertron | TFW2005 | BotTalk
wada sez: This strip serves to introduce a live-action counterpart to Shockwave and his Autobot persona Longarm from Transformers Animated. The concept is paired up with a similar idea from G1, the Double Spy Punch/Counterpunch. By stealing Punch’s rectifier, Shockwave is able to gain a similar ability. Punch’s alt-mode here is apparently a 2011 Audi R8 Spyder. Some fans disliked this strip for disregarding the prior canon existence of Longarm in the movieverse—but when has two characters sharing a name ever stopped the movieverse doing anything? See below for a metric ton of behind-the-scenes material by Stiffey.
