Mount Norquay and a Setting Along the Banks of the Bow River (Banff National Park)
flickr
Mount Norquay and a Setting Along the Banks of the Bow River (Banff National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: I took several images at this point with the turn of the Bow River just prior to going under the bridge in Banff. I was trying to find that angle and composition to really show the most of the mountain as a backdrop but have the broad sweeping look with the Bow River to my front. I eventually settled on this as the kind of a split for the best image captured of this setting. One could see the Bow River seemingly filling up the near portion of the image with evergreen trees lining the riverbanks. Then far off in the distance was Mount Norquay with clouds and some patches of blue skies above.

Hillsides, a Valley and Mountain Peaks (Banff National Park)
flickr
Hillsides, a Valley and Mountain Peaks (Banff National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: What I wanted to capture with this view was the rises and falls of the land to my front while walking around and soaking in views on Sulphur Mountain. Nearby and continuing from that same mountainside is Sanson Peak. Then begins the drop with the Bow Valley below before returning to the mountains peaks that stretched from one side to the other and the horizon beyond. To meter and focus this image, I decided to close down on the aperture and meter on the nearby Sanson Peak. It seemed to have that mean reading with all the different lights and shadows present in this setting.

An Amazing View of the Bow Valley (Banff National Park)
flickr
An Amazing View of the Bow Valley (Banff National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: This is the the view from the top of Sulphur Mountain looking to the northeast. What I wanted to capture here (other than the obvious view below) was the feeling while standing at this point along Sulphur Mountain. One has to image the cool bit of an early morning day in the Canadian Rockies. Then there's the wind whipping around as it blows through the valleys and down the mountainsides. Occasionally there's the gurgling sound of a raven overhead curiously watching the people below. That's the setting to appreciate this view...to the image now :-) Below in the Bow Valley, one can see the Bow River flowing through and beyond the city of Banff. In the middle of the image is Tunnel Mountain which I would later be hiking that afternoon. To the immediate left right of that is a portion of Mount Rundle which is always a sight to take in! Off in the distance is Stoney Squaw Mountain and Cascade Mountain and other peaks of the Palliser and Fairholme Range with Lake Minnewanka nestled amongst the latter two. By capturing and including some of the nearby hillsides of trees, I felt a person looking at this image would easily take in the setting of a wonder at the mountains all around in this part of Banff National Park.

My Drawings - Banff National Park Sulphur Mountain View
flickr
My Drawings - Banff National Park Sulphur Mountain View by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: An Amazing View of the Bow Valley. This was...well, one of those amazing views where I could easily say that I was at a loss of words to describe how amazing and beautiful it really was. This just happened to be the first time I'd taken a tram ride to the top of Sulphur Mountain! The view is generally looking to the northeast across the Bow Valley around the Banff area. From this point, one can easily see the city of Banff, Tunnel Mountain, the Bow River, the western end of Mount Rundle and even up north to Lake Minnewanka and nearby peaks and ridgelines of the Fairholme Range. The image I posted is here on Flickr (www.flickr.com/photos/14723335@N05/34472601921/). For the painting portion of this image, I used a few techniques to practice what I'd been working on these past few months. Using different hues and shades to show contrast relief across a landscape. Using broad strokes to not get so focused on details but rather allowing the eye to take a "step back" and imagine details depicted in the painting. Another was places to show trees in different styles: sometimes as s broad stroke and at other nearby places as outlines with highlights, midtones and shadows. When it came to the city portion of the image, I also tried not to focus on painting exact details of the buildings but rather painting more block-like and shapes with sharper edges. I could use slight variations of hues and shades (along with straight lines of streets) to create an illusion of a town and buildings. With the clouds, I attempted to not focus on that many shades of whites and grays to depict details in them; I found three shades to best paint those clouds...and add more blues skies to that overcast day. In the middle foreground of the painting, you'll find that stick figure image of me "hiking" with my Cubbies hat, loving my time exploring the Canadian Rockies once again :-)

Views of Mount Cory and Other Jagged Peaks from Sulphur Mountain Cosmic Ray Station (Banff National Park)
flickr
Views of Mount Cory and Other Jagged Peaks from Sulphur Mountain Cosmic Ray Station (Banff National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: When you're up on a high point overlooking a valley with the Bow River, you pretty much have only majestic views to take in! From this location where I was standing around the old cosmic ray station, I had a view looking across to mountain peaks of Mount Cory, Mount Louis, Mount Edith and others of the Sawback Range. What I wanted to capture with this view was just the sheer majesty of the mountain peaks off in the distance. Here and there were some areas where the sunlight was coming through the clouds; other areas were hidden in the shadows from the clouds above. What I did with this view to help minimize the clouds (which were rather blah that day), was angle my SLR camera slightly downward. That way one would look across the valley and then to the mountain peaks and they just seem to just stand out bigger.

Greens and Blues (Banff National Park)

Greens and Blues (Banff National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: What I loved about this image was the vibrant colors of green all around me at this setting near Surprise Corner or Point. It was kind of a color contrast as there were blue skies with clouds above. One of the other things that I wanted to capture with this image was the unusual looking tree to the image right. It was something a friend pointed out to me, and it just seem to have that look that just stood out compared to the typical one of evergreen trees all around.

Views of the Bow River, Banff and the Bow Valley Beyond from the Top of Tunnel Mountain by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: What a view and amazing might be understating a little bit! I'd just finished the hike to the top and were soaking in the views. This is one to the west looking across the city of Banff and the Bow Valley. Far off in the distance is Mount Bourgeau and peaks of the Massive Range hidden in the clouds.

Views Seen on a Gondola Ride (Black & White, Banff National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: With the movement of the ride on this gondola up to the top of Sulphur Mountain, I found capturing a focused image somewhat off at times. One could see a little bit of blurring especially far off in the distance. Anywho, for this image it was all about taking in a beautiful view of the Bow Valley with mountains all around. The view could just stretch on and on and on...which a kind of did! I could only imagine taking this ride to work like some do :-) For the final image, I used Silver Efex Pro 2 to convert to black & white and then adjusted some of the color filters.
