Tierra Whack Celebrates Debut Album’s Release at Webster Hall on Friday Night
Tumblr media
Tierra Whack – Webster Hall – March 15, 2024
Philadelphia rap queen Tierra Whack has been getting the party started worldwide with her infectious rhymes for several years now. (It’s probably only a matter of time before she graces the multipurpose-room stage on Abbott Elementary to battle Tariq Temple at a F.A.D.E. showcase.) Whack channels creativity and visual aspirations into her poetic lyrics and the videos that accompany them. From the Grammy-nominated video for “Mumbo Jumbo” to the recent Alex Da Corte–directed “27 Club,” her flair for fashion exudes further joy and pop, as witnessed on World Wide Whack, her debut full-length. She celebrated its release Friday night at a sold-out Webster Hall.

With a large inflatable of the World Wide Whack avatar occupying a third of the stage, the rapper appeared adorned in her silver clown suit mirroring the attire from her album’s aesthetics. Opening with track one from her latest, “Mood Swing” appropriately began with  “I’ve been trying new things.” Throughout the show, the crowd indulged in a call-and-response, which warm-up DJ Kill Sing kicked off with a cry of  “worldwide” and requested the “Whack” reply. The admittedly nervous singer would cover the majority of the new songs, from the bounce-inducing “Ms Behave” to the melancholic “Two Night,” Her confidence building thanks to the supportive crowd, Whack effortlessly weaved among rap, pop, and R&B with her new material. On lead-single “Chanel Pit,” music box melodies danced amongst the spits of cultural references, like Vin Diesel and Resident Evil. Closer “27 Club” grooved to more R&B vibes for a downtempo, contemplative swan song, enrapturing the front row.

Tierra Whack didn’t leave her stans without a trip down memory lane, including fan favorites like the bop “Pretty Ugly” and “Fuck Off,” which elicited raised middle fingers across the room. Everybody on the floor happily sang, “He likes my diamonds and pearls,” along with “Hungry Hippo.”  For the first time live, Whack performed her section of Lil Yachty’s “T.D.” before calling it a night. Despite the house lights turning on and exit music playing, everyone stayed put, chanting, “World Wide Whack,” leaving the stage crew unsure if they should halt operations. DJ Kill Sing indicated it might not be the end to this unforgettable night, as a wigless Whack returned to confess she was already shedding her costume. The crowd-manifested encore had the Philly native run off “Peppers and Onions” atop the barricade, before dropping to the floor amid her rabid admirers. —Sharlene Chiu | @Shar0ck

Hey there, i have come to you with Led Light Therapy.at first we have to know what is it?` Light Emitting Diode therapy, has been around for decades — NASA used the technology in plant growth experiments on board the Space Shuttle in the ’80s — it recently found its way into the zeitgeist as an Insta-worthy skin treatment for everything from severe acne to fine lines and dullness. And it’s no wonder: As with most things involving NASA, it’s equal parts intriguing and effective. But how can a futuristic-looking mask that simply shines a light on your face be such an all-star skin savior? When used consistently, over time, LED lights are thought to penetrate your skin at different depths and cause various reactions in your skin, such as fighting acne-causing bacteria, plumping skin and reducing wrinkles,” says Los Angeles-based dermatologist Dr. Annie Chiu, who tells me that the most common LED lights for skin care are blue and red, though pink and white exist as well. “Blue light kills bacteria that causes acne and red stimulates collagen production and helps speed skin’s natural healing process,” she explains. This makes it a great option for anyone who wants to brighten up dark spots. White light, which is often found only in in-office treatments, is thought to penetrate the deepest to tighten and reduce inflammation. Sounds like voodoo magic, sure, but there are myriad studies that back it up, too. This, of course, makes it an ideal treatment for clients who are in front of the camera on the regular, or anyone who wants to stick with non-invasive skin-tightening tricks. As for how it feels? Think: more relaxing than stifling, and though the LED light may feel warm on the face, it won’t cause burns to the skin (though eye damage is possible if proper protection isn’t used).
What took so long for LED skin treatments to go mainstream? Besides the lack of consumer knowledge — some see the treatment on Instagram and think it’s the same UV-emitting light that comes from tanning beds, or as Vargas calls them, “public enemy number one” — it’s generally still cost-prohibitive. For example, some of Vargas’s clients come in just to use her oft-Instagramed full-body LED light bed, which costs $150 for 20 minutes. She also has a few other treatments that incorporate the LED light bed, such as the $175 Power Peel (which she says is a “detoxifying, resurfacing peel followed by LED therapy and oxygen to make [clients] look like they have spent the last month in a health spa”), the Vita light treatment, which costs $225 for an hour of exfoliation, LED light therapy and oxygen; and the Sleeping Beauty facial, which rings in at $225 for 30 minutes.

Mitski Thrills Town Hall with Acoustic Take on New Album
Tumblr media
Mitski – Town Hall – September 26, 2023
After some speculation that last year’s Laurel Hell might be Mitski’s final studio album, she delighted fans with the release of The Land Is Hospitable and So Are We earlier this month. She clarified to NPR, “I never intended to leave music … I decided to leave the industry for however long it would take for me to get my heart and soul back. But eventually, I kind of looked around and realized just how lucky I was to get to create the music I want to make and have my music reach other people.” To stamp her renewed outlook, the singer-songwriter embarked on the Amateur Mistake Intimate Shows, a four-city North American tour. The shift from the raucous production of Laurel Hell to the considerably quieter and meditative The Land Is lends to the more personal presentation of her work compared to her previous visit to Radio City Music Hall. As with the first show in Mexico City, Mitski played an acoustic set of her latest songs at a sold-out Town Hall on Tuesday night.

Running down the recent record in track order, Mitski began with its opening single, “Bug Like an Angel,” standing front and center at the mic bookended by a guitarist and a cellist. She provided a hearty hello to crowd and shared her history in the city with a story about writing “Class of 2013.” It was the year she graduated college, as well as the turning point when she decided to continue the dream of being a musician. A decade later she thanked New Yorkers for dreaming with her. The audience was rapt in the reverie of every quiver of her vocal delivery, while Mitski slowly incorporated gestures to emphasize her lyrics, from outstretched arms for “I Don’t Like My Mind” to a raised arm cue upon the lyrics “clap for me in the dark” on “When Memories Snow.”

Performing “My Love Mine All Mine” to the rafters felt like an opera singer unraveling. However, delivering the final track, “I Love Me After You,” bent over and then culminating in a lounging position brought the hall to a standing ovation. As a reward of appreciation, Mitski continued with a couple more songs from her back catalog welcoming folks to sing along. One ardent fan scream from the balcony upon the first few chords of “Francis Forever” and everyone else in the room commenced singing. After the trio of older favorites “I Bet on Losing Dogs,” the infectious “Love Me More” and the melancholic “A Pearl,” Mitski returned solo with an acoustic guitar to encore with “A Burning Hill” and a cover of Peter La Farge’s “Coyote, My Little Brother.” —Sharlene Chiu | @Shar0ck
