Do you have an already written analysis for something great? You mention it a lot in your song analyses. Don’t worry about it if you don’t
Hi nonnie! I do. It’s one of the first songs I ever analyzed because it’s one of the first he’s ever written.

SOMETHING GREAT
(Midnight Memories, released in 2013) written with Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol) and Jacknife Lee (producer with an impressive hit list).
One day you'll come into my world and say it all
One day, as in the future; come into my world, his world (not a shared world), come into (so not a part of it already because if they were it would be come back, return); say it all, say what?
You’ll say we'll be together even when you're lost
This is what you will say; even when you’re lost, you is lost, lost to him, lost to themself, regardless he wants them to be together; notice it’s you will, we will= future tense; you are lost=present (not future or past so ongoing)
One day you'll say these words I’ve thought but never said
Again, one day, in the future, you will say these words; he’s thought them but never said them. He’s thought about you saying this or about him wanting someone to say that to him? Why hasn’t he said them, because he can’t for some reason?
You’ll say we're better off together in our bed
In the future you will say; our bed, shared; better off together vs apart.
I want you here with me
He misses his person and wants them in the flesh, here with him, presently
Like how I pictured it
He’s pictured it in his mind, so in the past he’s pictured it, what you will say, you being here with him
So I don't have to keep imagining
Imagining because it’s the only place he can connect with the person, he keeps imagining implying frequently, recurring and current, implies a frustration with having to imagine and not have in reality, like he doesn’t want to imagine it any more.
Come on, jump out at me
He’s begging this person to come on, as in hurry up, follow me; jump out at me, meaning make yourself known, show up, but also implies he’ll recognize the person instantly—they will jump out to him; Webster defines jump out at as “1 : to suddenly come at (someone) from a hiding place (implying this person is unknown/hidden to him) 2 : to immediately get the attention of (someone)” the second definition implies he is confirming if they come on he will know them immediately, almost don't be afraid to come forward
Come on, bring everything
Begging them to hurry up again; telling them it’s okay, bring everything, baggage and trauma, all your heart, give it your all, bring all you have to me, encouraging almost
Is it too much to ask for something great?
Rhetorical question not directed at you, directed at the universe; he’s wondering if this desire for something great (this relationship, finding his person that will stay with him when they are lost, stay in their bed) is too much to ask; said in a way that hints at exasperation; usually this phrase is used when you don’t think the request is too much to ask and is sarcastic; great meaning- of an extent, amount, or intensity considerably above the normal or average.
The script was written and I could not change a thing
The script was written, script implies they are following something already written but it doesn’t imply either person wrote it, it was written but by who, not him because he couldn’t change it; they are actors “all the worlds a stage and all the men and women merely players” this also implies a sense of hopelessness, lack of control over the outcome; what couldn’t be changed? The only thing that makes sense is separation or the journey/path of their lives because the chorus references him wanting them here with him.
Note: could is conditional tense, it is not can not/did not which is harsher and more finite with more agency, could suggests something outside of the self directing it. It sounds like he’s giving an explanation to this person.
I want to rip it all to shreds and start again
This lack of control frustrates him, he wants to rip the script up and start again (his life, their journey?) willing to start everything over to have things between them be different; this shows he’s highly invested in this outcome and highly aware of something outside the two of them at play. He’s telling this person essentially if I had the power, I’d do things differently.
One day I'll come into your world and get it right
One day in the future; now he’s coming to the person, they aren’t coming into his world, he’s coming into theirs; he says he’ll get it right, implying in the past he’s gotten it wrong, not necessarily with the person but in love as a whole, that’s what it implies to me, it could also mean get whatever is keeping them apart right so they are together; he’s saying when I come to you I will get it right, reassuring them he’s gonna come correct; again this doesn’t imply he knows them because it’s not I’ll come back
I'll say we're better off together here tonight
Now you isn’t speaking in the future, he is, he’s saying in the future he will say this; no matter what they are better off together, here… where is here? With each other. Repeating the earlier line of better off together. This is repeated to emphasize this feeling of no matter what we are better off together, he believes this, he wants this
You're all I want
He’d start everything over for this person, they are all he wants in life; you are, present
So much it's hurting
It’s hurting implies presently he feels this; this yearning for this person pains him, because they are not with him currently, but he knows in the future they will be; in the future they will have this honest vulnerable conversation about how much they need each other and stay together; this part of the song is poignant because the vocals are louder than the instrumentation and it’s stripped, he wants them to know he’s not okay with what the script is and to remind them how much he wants them, this is a vulnerable moment because he admits his suffering

Something Great || Anna + Clara
It may have been some sort of pipe dream or, honestly, just a joke, but Clara had actually really liked the thought of having a little One Direction concert. What wasn’t to like about it, after all? All of their music was good and getting to do stuff that was more contemporary would help shake people out of their heads for a bit of a break! The Music had liked the idea, too, if the copious amount of times she’d heard the melodies to various One Direction songs throughout her day. It even went as far as to high jack her phone, playing their songs despite it clearly being on shuffle.
(Also— she had really enjoyed Anna’s company. She was nice! She was funny! Clara didn’t think she had totally botched their interaction!)
After too much over thinking, she’d sent Anna a text, asking if she’d been serious about the concert. Then (when Clara had worked up the courage to actually look at her phone again) she’d replied that, yeah, she was.
This was how they got to be sitting in the dining hall, trying to work out how they were going to get this whole thing off the ground. “Hate to say it, but I guess planning the set list will probably be the last thing we get to do, huh?”
