How to make faster memories
While computer processor's speed has increased esponentially in the last 30 years, reaching millions of clock cycles per second, the same can't be said for memories. In fact, the access time of DRAM volatile memories is one or two order of magnitudes slower than the clock cycle time.

Clock cycle: the time that a processor spends to fetch an instruction from memory, decode it and execute it.
There are multiple types of memories. A distinction can be made between volatile memories, that lose their data when the computer is turned off, and permanent memories.RAM ( or Random Access Memories) are volatile, while ROM is permanent.
SRAM (Static Ram) is the fastest type of memory, but also the most expensive one: it's 5000$/GB to make.
DRAM implements the main memory of most computers. It's a compromise between price, dimensions and speed.
The computer's hard disk is made of ROM, and that's where the data are saved when you turn it off. ROMs only cost between $0.40 and $0.05, but they are also extremely slow, allowing less than 1 GB per second transfer times.

Here's the thing: having a really fast processor is going to be useless if it has to wait for several cycles to load and store data in memory.
Caching
One part of the solution is introducing a cache: a small-sized, fast memory (SRAM), where we can put the data the processor uses most often, or is more likely to use next.
There are at least three levels of memory: the cache, the main memory, and the hard disk. When the processor requests a piece of data, the cache is the first place to search. If it's there, a cache hit occurs. Otherwise, it's a cache miss, and it goes down a level to look for the data in the main memory. If it's still not found, it's time to look for it in the hard disk.

Since cache capacity is largely inferior to main memory, the computer engeneer has to decide which subset of the main memory should be stored on cache. When a cache miss occurs, it must replace the old data with the new one. The two most common strategies are LRU (Last Recently Used), and random replacement. This decision is based on the principles of temporal and spatial locality, which state that the processor is probably going to reuse data that it has just used, or it's going to use the data next to it.

A cache is subdivided into blocks and sets. Blocks are chunks of the main memory which usually comprise multiple words the size of an integer number. Sets are groups of blocks. Caches have a mapping function that associates every address of the main memory to a set in the cache. So, a memory address will always be put into the same set, but may be put in different blocks of that set.
A direct mapped cache has as many sets as it has blocks. This means that a chunk of memory will always be put in the same cache block. A fully associative cache has only one set, so a piece of data can be put in any block, regardless of its memory address. In a set associative memory, a set contains multiple blocks, and the cache contains multiple sets. The set associative memory is a compromise between the two other types.
The fully associative memory has a lower miss rate, but it's heavier to implement. Having larger blocks increases spatial locality, but it also increases the penalty in case of miss. Direct mapped cache is easy to implement, but it's too rigid, reducing temporal locality. At the end, the best course of action has to be valued case by case.

Een nieuw Allroader frame voor mezelf. Deze keer geen bijzondere uitprobeersels maar gewoon een Special Allroader volgens de huidige standaard-specificaties.

Wel nieuw zijn de dropouts: Na verschillende opties te hebben geprobeerd (voor een 12x142mm steekas icm flatmount rem) heb ik nu een dropout gevonden die goed functioneert in de werkplaats én op de weg en er ook nog eens goed uitziet (niet te lomp en mooi aansluitend op stays). Deze kwalitatief hoogwaardige dropouts van Paragon Machine Works zijn te combineren met verschillende derailleur-hangers (op deze fiets de direct-mount versie).

Verder vooral bekende frame-elementen (o.a. Columbus LIFE en ZONA buizen, interne kabelgeleiding door onderbuis en de zadelpenklem weer gewoon op de voorkant) en mijn persoonlijke fit/geometrie (dit keer met een iets meer horizontale bovenbuis). De Allroader-voorvork is overgekomen van het vorige frame.
Poedercoat: sparkling spikkelmix van ultramarijnblauw en zwart. Het donkerblauwe frame in combinatie met overwegend zwarte onderdelen bleek toch wel een beetje saai. Daarom heb ik mezelf getrakteerd op een verse blauwe HOPE headset en naven en een blauw HOPE bottom bracket opgediept uit mijn voorraad. Deze frisse blauwe accenten geven de fiets net wat extra voor op sombere winterdagen.

Verder is deze fiets grotendeels opgebouwd met degelijke, bewezen onderdelen van zijn voorganger: o.a. Shimano Ultegra 2x11-speed groep (mechanisch, geen elektronica op mijn fiets!), TRP Spyre remmen (mechanisch, liever geen hydraulica op mijn fiets), SRAM Force crankstel, Shimano XT pedalen, Deda Gera Alloy gravelstuur (misschien niet moeders mooiste, maar ergonomisch voor mij bijna perfect) en een verse set wielen (HOPE RS4 naven i.c.m. DT Swiss RR481db velgen).
Meteen opgebouwd in 'wintermodus' met 32mm banden (Conti GP5000), binnenbanden gevuld met tubeless vloeistof voor extra lekbestendigheid (ja dat werkt, tip!), en natuurlijk goede vaste spatborden (SKS Bluemels, all black).
Hiermee heb ik een Allroader die voor mij zowel technisch als optisch bijna perfect is. Een goede basis voor jaren kilometervreten. Laat die winter maar komen! Ondertussen zijn de eerste paar honderd kilometer alweer gereden. Hij rijdt heerlijk!

WPI launches automotive taillight solution based on products from NXP, Nanochip and Lextar Electronics

【Lansheng Technology News】WPI recently announced that its subsidiary Shiping has launched an automotive taillight solution based on NXP S32K144, Nanochip NSL21912 and Lextar Electronics PC35R14.
Under the general trend of automobile digital transformation, automobile taillights, as important devices for lighting and signaling, are also developing in a more intelligent, multi-functional and personalized direction. Currently, some well-known automobile manufacturers are using digital taillight design to automatically adjust light brightness and color to improve driving safety. In response to this trend, WPI launched an automotive taillight solution based on NXP S32K144, Nanochip NSL21912 and Lextar PC35R14, which can help automakers quickly complete through-type taillight designs and enhance the travel experience.
This solution consists of three parts: main control board, driver board and light board. Among them, the main control board is designed based on NXP's S32K144 MCU. S32K144 32-bit automotive-grade general-purpose MCU launched with Arm® Cortex®-M4F core. This product has a DSP instruction set and a single-precision floating-point processing unit (FPU), which can run at a maximum frequency of 112MHz, and integrates 2MB Flash and 256KB SRAM. It is suitable for automotive ASIL B/D body and area control applications.
The driver board of the solution uses Nanochip NSL21912 LED driver as the core, and is equipped with Nanochip NCA1042 CAN transceiver and JWQ5103 buck regulator. Among them, NSL21912 is a 12-channel, 20V high-side LED driver that complies with automotive grade Grade 1 and has an ambient temperature of up to 125°C. It is suitable for automotive exterior taillights, external headlights, and miscellaneous exterior lighting applications.
The lamp board is designed with 106 lamp beads, all of which use Lextar's PC35R14. With signal control, a variety of lighting effects can be achieved. In addition, the main control board, driver board and light board are connected using Molex connectors, which can quickly transmit control signals.

La bicicleta tope gama para carretera de Look, el modelo 795, disponible para el catálogo 2016 se ofrecerá hasta en 2 plataformas: La 795 Aerolight que se caracterizará por contar con los frenos frontales integrados en la horquilla y un montaje del freno trasero por debajo de las vainas; mientras que la 795 Light que se ejecuta con un sistema de frenos de pinza tradicional. Y si bien, la máquina ya se encontraba lista desde hace un año, debido al pasado clima financiero en Look decidieron aplazar esta situación. Al final, Look puede reclamar que la 795 Aerolight es cerca de 11% más aerodinámica en comparación con su predecesora (la 695 Aerolight), incluyendo toda una gama de características que han sido diseñadas para hacer de este modelo lo más aerodinámico posible. Ya en el interior del cuadro, los cables se guían alrededor del tubo de dirección (una característica que es una de los 11 diseños patentados en esta bicicleta). En relación al diseño de la potencia también se mantiene al ras del tubo superior y no cuenta con separadores hacia el frente, pero la potencia puede ser ajustable entre 13° negativos y 17° positivos. Finalmente, el tubo del sillín reclama proporcionar cerca de 20% de mayor flexibilidad en comparación con la 695, y esto último ha sido posible gracias al uso de diferentes grados de carbono. Mientras que, para mejorar aún más la comodidad, Look ofrece su tija E-Post 2, junto al tubo del sillín que se encuentra separado por un elastómero que ayuda en la absorción de vibraciones (lo que evita que el ciclista se encuentre en contacto directo). The e-MTB range for 2024 expands with the introduction of the Powerstage RR Limited Edition, Ducati's most exclusive e-enduro model developed to tackle the most extreme off-road conditions. The name Powerstage, in fact, recalls a new type of special stage recently introduced in the e-enduro circuits which consists in tackling, in addition to the classic downhill stages, a technical uphill route, testing both the skills of athletes competing in the races and the performance level of the vehicle. Powerstage RR Limited Edition is a concentration of technology and advanced components, defined by eliminating compromises with the aim of offering maximum performance. The "full carbon" frame has undergone lengthy testing on the toughest routes with a single goal: to guarantee maximum performance in the enduro field. The choices on the arrangement of the carbon layers and on the types of fibre intertwining are the result of FEA (Finite Element Analysis) which allows to identify the points subject to greater stress, which therefore require greater strength. More attention to stiffness has been given to the steering area, the rear chain stay and the engine area reinforced by two ribs (T-Ribs). On the frame there are many other high-quality functional details, such as the passage of internal cables, protected by a steering stop system (T-Stopper), bearings on the joints, in direct contact with the carbon without the use of bushings and an asymmetrical rear chain stay, which in addition to a captivating design offers better responsiveness and uphill traction. The geometric solutions adopted make the Powerstage RR extremely fast and stable on the roughest routes. The verticalised 78° seat tube angle allows the rider to assume an optimal position in the saddle on technical uphill sections, and a slack 64° head tube angle helps to overcome any obstacle at top speeds.

The new Shimano EP801 drive unit represents a benchmark for the category and maintains the native characteristics of the EP8: 250 Watts of nominal power and 85 Nm of torque, always delivered with the utmost fluidity and naturalness over a wider cadence range than ever before. The new system features two preconfigured assistance profiles: "long ride", to favour autonomy on long tours and "fast ride", to enjoy maximum performance on shorter outings. By means of the "Fine Tune" mode present on the Shimano "E-Tube Project" app, it is possible to create your own profiles thanks to the extensive possibilities for customising the electric assistance. The removable 630Wh Shimano battery is positioned inside the "verticalised" downtube in order to lower the centre of gravity, improving the balance of the bike. The Öhlins RXF38 m.2 air fork (180 mm travel) and the Öhlins m.2 spring shock absorber with TTX technology (170 mm travel) are fully adjustable in both rebound and compression, at high and low speeds, ensuring precision riding and stability. The SRAM GX AXS 12-speed wireless rear electronic shifting provides immediate and precise gear-shifts at all times. The Braking First brakes with customised Ducati Corse levers and 203 mm thick 3 mm discs are among the most powerful currently on the market. The Crankbrothers Synthesis wheels with differentiated format (29” front, 27.5” rear) with variable thickness carbon rims help to further improve steering precision, guaranteeing an excellent weight/strength ratio. The tyres are Pirelli Scorpion Enduro S on the front and Pirelli Scorpion EMTB-S on the rear to offer maximum grip and adherence. The equipment is completed by a telescopic seat post, a Renthal carbon handlebar and a Fizik saddle with special integrated tool holder.
