--And this is why you don't dismount from a moving horse face-first, even if you are hard-headed!

Another post just reminded me of an important PSA
Sokka is a better Ron Weasley and Xander Harris than Ron Weasley and Xander Harris ever were
Katara is a better Hermione Granger and Willow Rosenberg than Hermione Granger and Willow Rosenberg ever were
Zuko is a better Draco Malfoy than Draco Malfoy ever was canonically, but Spike is pretty great, even though yes, okay, we know, Zuko's redemption arc will always be superior

It's weird to read people's post about how they hate this episode cuz
The lack of a zebra
Already knowing what the lotus casino is a trap
Grover being the only one who got trapped
The gang being "too smart"
Luke's mom's expositioh
Lack of action
The deadline passing
4 pearls
Episode is mostly dialogue
Idk. Honestly but heres what I thought as the episode went on...
Very long post. Read the red text if u just want points
Okay, they suspect the wrong person to be the thief (typical detective trope - still fits)
Cute grover and percabeth banter
They already know about the lotus flowers. Makes sense as there are 3 greek myth knowledgeable kids there. At least on of them should know.
They split up. Bad idea
The pair are being cautious
Grover is gone now
Percy and annabeth are searching for hermes so makes sense they'd be at the casino area. I dont see how they could be trapped—nop they already were the moment they stepped in
May Castellan exposition. Okay, revealing the premise of being a seer but not telling us what happened to her as a result is good. Without context from the books, we now know that something's happened to his mom and we do not know except for Luke blaming Hermes for it
Hermes parenting talk - this happens in Sea of Monsters but its nice to at least see a contrast of how he's gonna feel pre-betrayal vs post-betrayal.
Poseidon was the one who warned hermes about trying to be close to luke. Contrasting Poseidon, now, wanting to meet Percy
They past the deadline - what does this mean???
They almost forgot Grover but eventually finding him
Grover started this episode saying that his friends would never understand his personal quest to one day save the natural world, and here he is now, memories wiped except for what he wants to do with his life. And percy understands and is hopeful for him
Hermes taxi scene was hilarious
Percabeth moment
Teleport to Santa Monica
Percy meets the Nereid who tells him that theyd passed the deadline
Percy still wants to finish the quest 1) to save his mom 2) get the bolt 3) stop a war
4 PEARLS???
What I'm taking from this:
There were A LOT of changes to how this scene played out in the books. I like that the kids are smart. I like that Grover got to tell Percy about his personal quest even if it was just a glimpse of it.
Should there have been a Zebra? MAYBE. I wouldve loved to see Percy talk to em but its not exactly plot relevant. Do I wish they had gotten trapped by just playing games? Yeah, but then how would they get to talk to Hermes. They would've just forgotten why they were there in the first place. Do I wish there was more action? No, not really. Do I wish the kids had flaws? THEY ALREADY DO. Grover got trapped by his own desires and personal goal over the quest he was on. Percy and Annabeth may not have shown their flaws this episode but... They already had in the past episodes. Maybe they shouldve but Im not mad that they're just... There.
I actually love that they're past the deadline and Percy has 4 pearls. Cuz it makes us wonder what would happen next. I think as book fans, we pride ourselves of knowing what happens next. Immune to any surprise. But when we do, there are 2 reactions: 1) intrigue and worry and unfortunately common, 2) despising the changes. I fall under number 1. I like that I dont know what could happen next. I know how it SHOULD go but I like that Rick is still surprising us despite knowing what could happen.
I like that we get Hermes parenting moments in this episode. Because instead of learning a sliver of why Luke betrays Percy at the end of the season at the last episode, we get a bit of exposition into his early life.
Annabeth says not to talk to Luke about his dad
Something happened to his mom and Luke hates Hermes for it
Hermes is keeping his distance because he knows that whatever he does, he's gonna end up hurting Luke
All of this sets up what will happen not just later in the books, but LATER IN THE SERIES. Rick wrote The Lightning Thief without any concrete idea of how the later books will play out. NOW HE DOES. So it makes sense to give us a way to understand Luke. To know why he makes the final decision in the book.
I would have found it weird if the gang went on the quest, got back to camp, got a sliver of Luke's opinion of the gods, then betrayal. NONE OF US WOULD UNDERSTAND. We get that he hates the gods but we won't know why. Now we do. By giving us all this material to work with, it gives its viewers the opportunity to really think, if you were in his shoes, would you have done it too? Would you be like Ethan or Chris, and joined him in that rebellion? I definitely could.
Because I for one would know that when I first read the books then reread it after, I would never even think about joining him given the context of the first book. We really only understand why he betrays the gods at like... The 5th book. When we finally get his backstory. Throughout the series, it has just been Percy hating Luke and being annoyed that Annabeth was so forgiving of him. Then on the last book, we finally get the backstory. Because, when you write in first person perspective, you cant give backstory IF the narrator is not talking to the character or is at the place where it happens. Throughout the whole series, Percy never thinks about what pushed Luke to make his decisions until, Nico had to bring Percy to where it all started. IN THE LAST BOOK. IN THE 5TH SEASON. THATS WHEN WE FINALLY GET TO UNDERSTAND WHAT MAKES LUKE CLICK.
It brings Luke out of the characterization of being someone who hates the gods and wants to overthrow them cuz they dont care about his kids. To someone who was abandoned and ignored by his father. To someone who is a victim to the gods' rules and their world (his mom). I kinda understand why he is the one leading the war here. Its cuz he's experienced one of the worst things that could happen to a demigod. Losing his mom. Getting ignored by his dad. Undervalued by the gods.
THIS ENTIRE SEASON HAS JUST BEEN SET UP FOR LUKE'S STORY. BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW... THAT IN THE LAST BOOK, RACHEL TELLS PERCY THAT HE IS NOT THE HERO OF THIS STORY. HE IS NOT THE ONE TO STOP THE WAR. LUKE IS THE HERO AT THE END OF THE SERIES. AND IT WOULD'VE BEEN WEIRD IF WE NEVER GET TO UNDERSTAND WHY UNTIL.... THE LAST BOOK.

Shining Force Data Collection - May 1992
These are from a special on japanese magazine Beep! Megadrive. I haven’t translated most of it because it’s your typical character stat analysis and item/magic list, but there were some fun character tidbits as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Protagonist
Leave the finishing blows to him
Character: A typical man, doesn't talk much. Many warriors admire him and join his force.
Special skills: He's the only one capable of ordering the wild members of the Shining Force to retreat.
Mae
Daughter of the Knight Captain, running through the wide fields
Character: Super harsh. Though that's what you can expect of a knight that was also raised like a princess.
Special skills: Her father was the Knight Captain Varios. Her bloodline is as good as it gets for a knight.
Tumblr media
Ken
This model apprentice is a guy that grows stronger real fast
Character: Honest. To the point where he comes off as rude to other people. Though it's also a good thing.
Special skills: His youth is his strength. As a knight in training, his growth upon getting real battle experience is extraordinary.
Arthur
The hidden power of a laundry worker
Character: Extremely earnest. His weak point is that he's quick to worry.
Special skills: He's a unique knight who can learn magic. Is that a given when you work on the laundry in Manarina?
Pelle
Are mercenary knights immortal?
Character: A hothead. Perhaps that's why he's easy to deceive, he's completely helpless when it comes to surprise attacks.
Special skills: Has the sheer determination to climb up from a precipice. His strong will beyond that of regular mercenaries isn't just an act.
Vankar
Never stops drinking
Character: Loves alcohol and freedom and fighting. Has an adult charm to him.
Special skills: Fights head-on, one-on-one, a fair clash of power versus power. He's a knight for hire with a lot of pride.
Earnest
A knight of the shadows living for revenge
Character: A man of conviction who won't turn back at any danger in order to attain his goals.
Special skills: Skilled at guerilla tactics, seeing how he penetrated a fort leading only a small bunch of soldiers.
Luke
A brat charging onward with a dumpling of a nose!
Character: A natural-born fighter who loves battling, However, he's usually a kind man.
Special skills: Great physical strength. Shows a fighting style distinct from the knights.
Gort
A hot blooded grandpa unmatched in the battlefield
Character: A kind warrior who loves his family and homeland. Has the charm of an unassuming master.
Special skills: Relies on skill more than strength, contrasting with the young Luke.
Hans
Talented archer who hates fighting
Character: A pacifist. Does things on his own pace and whines a lot, but when he decides to act he does it well.
Special skills: Precise as a machine with the bow. Never misses a target.
Tumblr media
Diane
Sniper woman raised in the mountain country
Character: Having been raised as a hunter since a young age, she is very self reliant. Also full of vitality.
Special skills: Runs through hills and fields like a wild beast, chasing after her prey through any distance.
Lyle
Heavy firearm guy with a terrible sense of direction
Character: He's careless, but the kind of guy that's hard to hate. Even he admits his sense of direction is poor.
Special skills: Certainly strong. Carries around that heavy cannon without a single complaint.
Guntz
An inventor’s soul running through the battlefield
Character: A sensitive guy despite his appearance. Seems to be very watchful of his surroundings.
Special skills: Has dexterous hands. Does maintenance of the steam suit by himself.
Tao
The burning woman was devoted
Character: Seemingly meek, but strong on the inside. As expected of a fire mage.
Special skills: Cooks the undead of monsters well-done. A monster chef.
Anri
The princess is a silver haired mage
Character: She is a princess yet has lived in Manarina for a while, perhaps she's good at adapting to other environments?
Special skills: A princess who attacks with ice magic, it's a bit of a scary image to conjure.
Domingo
An impertinent creature since the day he hatched
Character: Talks way too much. Perhaps his egg was hatched in a bad way.
Special skills: His gelatinous body is hard for enemies to damage. Very resistant.
Alef
The magician of lightning attacks hates Lowe?
Character: A woman (?) with a unique adult vibe among those in the force. Quite attractive...
Special skills: The Bolt magic that makes one's fur stand on end and summons lightning. Its power is outstanding.
Lowe
The one who saved a life is a priest in training
Character: Very nosy and curious. Yet has a vibe that's hard to dislike.
[idk book did you read the previous character]
Special skills: Being a priest, that is healing magic of course. Especially eager to treat the girls' wounds.
Tumblr media
Khris
Has hidden strength very unexpected of her looks
Character: Because she has served a princess for a long time, she's mild mannered and very quiet.
Special skills: With experience she becomes quite strong, even in close combat. She also looks kind of lonely.
Torasu
The best when it comes to Aura
Character: The eldest in the force. Has a surprisingly funny face.
Special skills: Thanks to his long life, he has learned plenty of healing spells. Very knowledgeable.
Gong
The peak of body training
Character: He wanders about while training himself. A monk with strict discipline.
Special skills: Summons the healing fairies with a strong proper fist. You have to see it.
Balbaroy
Dances like a butterfly, stings like a hornet
Character: Has a deep sense of honor. Fought to protect the priest in Shade who took care of him.
Special skills: A valuable member who can fly. Can't anything be done about his kinda low strength...?
Amon
Do you understand how to use the birdmen couple?
Character: A gentle wife who cares dearly for her husband. You want to answer her pleas no matter what.
Special Skills: Another flying member along her husband. You can leave the battlefield scouting to them.
Kokichi
Flying is his life
Character: He has persisted for fifty years on experiments with flying machines. That says all you have to know about his personality.
Special skills: Kokichi is the only human in all of Rune to have flown. It's an amazing feat.
Bleu
Is this a legendary Sacred Dragon?
Character: He's a crybaby, but his care for his friends might be beyond that of humans. Likes Karin.
Special skills: Bleu is still only a child. He's just starting to develop his powers as a sacred dragon.
Zylo
The only option when it comes to forest battles
Character: While a beastman, he is the king of Bustoke. A noble and kind ruler.
Special skills: A forest spirit. In a forest, no one can match his power.
Tumblr media
Adam
Robot given a duty
Character: Loyal servant to the protagonist. He was created for this role. A long. long time ago.
Special skills: His whole body is weaponized. By getting experience, he may be able to unlock its abilities.
Musashi
A strong warrior visiting from an eastern country
Character: The embodiment of the samurai code. He cannot ignore evil, no matter how small.
Special skills: With a single swing of his katana he can tear apart even air! Such skill might be above even the protagonist's.
Hanzou
This user of ninja arts holds his sword in a backwards grip
Character: A complete mystery. His nature, his personality, all unknown. A literal fighting machine?
Special Skills: The secret art of hiding in the shadows. Now, let's look out for him thoroughly.
Yogurt
Why does he fight?
Character: "I don't get it..."
Special skills: He runs. Has a helmet. Tumbles down. Apparently has a lot of unexpected skills. Really unexpected.

on one hand, Nico using his powers once or twice and then passing out in his boyfriends arms is super funny. On the other, it’s annoying that he was made way less powerful after the first series and it happens to enough characters in heroes of olympus to be super noticeable. Percy losing the curse of Achilles, Jason being a big three kid and ex praetor who is said to have fought a Titan with his bare hands and just getting brain damage in a new way every time he’s in the same place as something plot relevant. A case could be made for Piper not learning how to fight with a sword in the months between her quest and heading over to camp jupiter, but in like the later half of the series.
in the Percy Jackson series, Nico has a couple instances of manipulating earth/precious metals. In heroes of Olympus, to make Hazel seem more powerful he acts like her sending a thing of gold back into the ground is way beyond his abilities. Like he routinely brings the dead back to life but she took down Gaea by herself in her first life so it was really not necessary for Nico to be less powerful.
it’d make more sense for him to be MORE powerful than in pjo because he’s older! And he’s older than Hazel!!
after Tartarus and dragging a forty foot statue across the world, yeah, that makes sense as a reason for him to be less powerful/exhausted. But despite him being a big three kid he never gets treated as consistently powerful after that and it’s infuriating.
i missed the established canon of him and the other big three kids being a huge deal and there’s so much that could’ve been done with him staying at camp and being able to do scary things consistently. he murders Bryce and all but I doubt anyone at camp knows it and he almost turned himself into a ghost doing it so it’s not like the reader ever gets the impression it’s something he realistically could add to his arsenal, even ignoring the moral qualms. so much is made about him being creepy and unsettling and he says multiple times that he has been isolated from other demigods due to being the son of hades! and yet he rolls up to camp and he never demonstrates why he has potential to be very very dangerous due to his powers. I think it would’ve been really cool to see people have to actually get to know him to see he’s not that different from them, in SPITE of a difference in ability and the disturbing nature of his powers
the most disturbing thing he does at camp in blood of olympus is nothing! he stops will from trying to save octavian. that’s got nothing to do with his powers.
#of course this all stems from the other major problems of the second series#like he forgets that Nico was only twelve in the last Olympian and ages him two years between the series#and the power scaling problems#but also#like with camp#there’s just too much going on in heroes of Olympus and not enough time#pjo took place over four years and there was one prophecy per summer plus that one winter in at the turning point of the series#the hoo books take place in less than a year#and it’s a lot of mini quests inside of side quests to progress the plot forward to even getting to the end of the series#juggling so many POVs and developing so many new main characters was done well#but it didn’t lend itself to also covering the conflict between the camps#in pjo the camp changes as Percy grows up#other characters grow up with him and have development - like clarisse#the brief glimpses of the camps that we get don’t really provide that#in addition Octavian doesn’t get as much development as Luke did and is a much flatter character#inferences can be made about him and fans can come up with plenty of headcanons and reasons he didn’t deserve his horrific death and#the main characters calling him evil constantly#but in plain canon he’s just got nothing on luke castellan#obviously I mean that in the writing way I don’t like luke#He’s a very effective villain though and a very human feeling character#as the human villain luke did so well and octavian you feel nothing for bc we don’t see annabeth caring about him or meet his mother#this is a Nico post that has gotten away from me in my ramblings#excuse me I just have a lot of thoughts on this series

Hi all!
Touched some grass, maybe touched too much grass, and got wiped out by a headache. The weekly weekday grind is about to begin so I’m going to temper my contributions to the ongoing conversations around and about the dinluke fandom.
That said, I’ve had quite a bit of catching up to do and want to say the following-
While the discourse quickly centered around dark!dinluke and dark!dinluke creators, I agree with Withercrown’s latest and other later posts from others that this group is not solely to blame for what’s been happening to this fandom. The dark!dinluke corner may be the most highly visible one and have contributed much to the toxic stereotypes, tropes, and trends that have dominated much of the fanworks we see nowadays, but they are not the only ones and cannot be solely blamed for every ill that seems to plague and diminish the ship’s fandom. There are many other fanworks that don’t share the same themes and (infamous? improper? nonexistent?) tags as the dark!dinluke corner but feature many of the same problems - racism, racialized xenophobia, homophobia, heterosexism, gendered stereotypes.
I did my part in centering the debate around them and also on the racism and xenophobia surrounding Din Djarin and Pedro Pascal with my responses to asks, my reblogs, my tags. While I know these conversations needed to be had (and they keep needing to be had, why do we keep needing to have these conversations???), I should’ve done more to highlight the other major problems with the fandom. I also didn’t speak up when discussions and headcanons fetishized and applied heterosexist ideas and tropes onto gay/MLM relationships and characters, and that’s something I need to work on. I’ve complained in private spaces many times my frustrations with characterizations of Luke in particular but never took them public. Seems like it’s time to end that.
It also bears reminding that all of these major problems with the dinluke ship and fandom that had been driving people away and reducing participation in these spaces are not separate. They are not isolated, they are not single issues to be addressed one by one. These are inter-connected and intersectional. Any effort to do better and to make a better community needs to take into account how we should approach Din and Luke as individuals and in a relationship. I do what I can while keeping in mind how Din is perceived because of his actor and I do the same for Luke (and for every other character in Star Wars, really, they all deserve this).
I’m just a human, I will fuck up (I have fucked up), but I’m always striving to correct myself, learn, and do better - for me, for the people in fandom, and for a ship I very much love.
I have a few asks in my inbox but I want to spend the rest of the night being productive with other things so I’ll address them later in the week. I’m also keeping anon asks off in the meantime for the same reasons. When will anon asks get turned back on? That’s for me to know and for you to find out.
Take care of yourselves. Do what you must for your sake. I’ll see y’all on the flip side.
#dinluke#skydalorian#tbh when I made that post I didn't expect it to blow up or kickstart another weekend of discoursing#I'm glad for it though I think we strayed too far from all the major issues Withercrown had brought up in his original post#but here's the thing - Withercrown was simply the straw that broke my camel's back#my poor camel had to bear the weight of all of my frustrations and anger toward not just dark!dinluke but other dinluke fans#I'm the poor fool who sat on that back with my silence and my fears about fandom and then that straw came down on my head#on a personal note - I hated gendered stereotypes and tropes all my life and my discomfort has led to me questioning myself#(one could argue that vico ortiz and OFMD's jim jimenez led me to seriously asking myself if I wasn't as cis as I thought I was)#that discomfort has also made me hyperaware of characters being assigned these traits and roles based on racialized and heterosexist ideas#it was never just the racism or xenophobia but also how the racism and xenophobia played into characterizing din and luke a certain way#the thing about intersectionality (besides it being really about frameworks of power and legal systems in the US) is that it is hard#it is hard work because it asks you to take into account so many facets of identity and inequality and you can lose track or focus#and it is ongoing. it never ends. so long as these systems and structures are in place we have to live and breathe it#it doesn't just go away after a weekend of volleying back and forth about statistics and identity#for me the hurt really began in 2016 with the finnpoe discourse which only worsened with The Last Jedi the next year#these hurts never left and will never leave because fandom doesn't learn doesn't do better#but I'm truly tired of being quiet and of wallowing silently in despair and of losing hope#so if I have to lob fireballs into the dinluke tag and show myself then so be it

You know, I’m just realizing that I don’t think anywhere in the prequel trilogy do we see present day Layton without his hat, so props to Level 5 for still making that moment at the end of Unwound Future special, instead of showing it again because we’ve already seen it in a previous game, despite these ones being chronologically before that one

Today in “apparently this crappy show will haunt me forever,” I mentioned the jukebox musical we did for my high school freshman year, Back To The Eighties, while talking to someone. Including bringing up the Star Wars dream sequence set to the theme from The Greatest American Hero - and no, I have no idea why they chose an entirely different property’s theme song for a Star Wars dream sequence. Even if they couldn’t get the rights you’d think they’d have chosen something that wasn’t a theme song? Anyway.
On the way home, what comes up on the radio but Believe It Or Not, theme song from The Greatest American Hero. My mom and I find this very funny and sing along because how can you not, and keep singing even as we enter a tunnel and the signal cuts out. I time the instrumental break in my head and continue. My mom can’t keep track of it and wonders out loud as we finish the song what part it’ll be at when we get out of the tunnel, shortly before we do.
Me: I know I go fast in my head but I remember how long the lightsaber fight is, we’ll probably be at the very end or the very start of the next song.
We exit the tunnel on the very last notes of Believe It Or Not. I was in this show fifteen years ago and wasn’t even in this number. Score one for Regalli’s musical memory, I guess.
#family shenanigans#incest mention in tags#in fairness it’s also a very memorable sequence due to having one of the funniest stage directions in a show full of bizarre ones#(a dancer with a chiffon scarf appears to give the scene a surreal feel) which is entirely unnecessary#because the scene puts Acceptable Levels of Nerdy Protagonist as Luke Skywalker; Jerk Jock Romantic Rival as Darth Vader;#and Love Interest as Princess Leia. and then they do the Luke-Vader fight from the end of Empire. You know the one.#don’t think too hard about it the writers sure as hell didn’t. this is about the level of eighties reference and plot writing throughout.#the pit had to rewrite/improvise the Eye of the Tiger score because it was so profoundly off#they also had to debug the score because apparently it had sections for saxophone containing notes saxophones cannot hit.#as one does.#the other funniest stage direction here is the one at the end of Centerfold in which the final count is ‘one last tirade against humanity’#(that one-two-three-four before the final round of nah nahs.)#in case you couldn’t tell this is not a good show and as far as I can tell it’s largely done by amateur productions like say high schools#because they need nostalgia money and the license is cheaper than Footloose (or it’s otherwise unavailable)#it makes for some great stories though.#oh also I give it a pass because it was written in like 2001 but it includes Never Gonna Give You Up. so we also got rickrolled for months#riiiiight around its peak.
