Luke Castellan singing a birthday song for Dionysus!reader.
gn!reader but the song talks in fem.
warnings: swearing.
Agreed, birthday parties were the second worst kind of parties, just after baby showers, and just as long as they're yours. But even the worst party was still a party and dam you loved those.
Maybe a bit of the attention too.
So it kinda sucked that after putting on your special person suit you got to face a normal routine where no one cared more than the occasional "happy birthday". It was just going to be normal thursday.
Except for Luke, apparently. He entered the dining pavilion at exactly 8:12 AM while you were just sitting down with your breakfast. He had a microphone, connected to a sort of boombox that he just left somewhere in the floor when Charlie came with a guitar and handed it to him.
Saturday mornin' jumped outta bed.
You instantly cringed. Luke didn't even knew how to play guitar (He learnt those chords just for you).
And put my best suit
He even looked so smug about it, looking down at his literally every day clothes.
Got in my car and raced like a jet.
Fuck, he made eye contact with you. You instantly turned around to the side, finding your father on the process, who seemed rather annoyed with the live show. But slowly you couldn't help but look again at his dorky act.
All the way to you.
No. Stop. Stay the fuck there. He was literally walking straight to you. Charlie following him now with the boombox and everyone looking, not quite making fun of him, not quite impressed about it all.
He put his hand on the Dionysus table, and then it dawned on you.
Knocked on your door with heart on my hand.
He wasn't walking towards you.
To ask you a question.
Your godly parent wished, for a moment, he had perished more than centuries ago, afar from the torturous instances that immortality day to day proved to offer.
He groaned and drowned his face on both his palms.
'Cause I know you are an old fashioned man.
There was something about a shameless idiot being able to have such a characteristically attractive smirk on him while performing the most humiliating act of his life, and taking you on his ride with no agreement of sny sort.
Oh, shit. Please don't.
He got on the fucking table.
Can I have your daughter for the rest of my life?
You could no longer fight it, you started to smile. You could no longer pretend you weren't listening to this song when you were 12, envy of the fact someone loved that way, maybe even hoping to be understood some day. You couldn't pretend you never felt as special as being completely socially annihilated by the cutest swordsman on camp.
Say yes. Say yes, 'cause I need to know.
He was actually really playing into the teenage pop-rockstar choreography and expression, as if it wasn't a terribly sung acoustic cover.
You say I'll never get your blessing 'til the day I die.
Maybe you also loved knowing his reputation was way to good for your father to actually be able to took it out on him and give him a lesson for ruining his morning.
Tough luck my friend but the answer is no!
Some people started to laugh, some people started to cheer him.
Until he stopped, and crouched to give the guitar to Charlie, who handed him the microphone.
"I couldn't learn the chorus for the life of me"
And he played the karaoke version.
Why you gotta be so rude?
Don't you know I'm human too?
Why you gotta be so rude?
I'm gonna marry her anyway.
It was funny in a way because Luke was... not even your boyfriend, or friend for that matter, just a sort of a pleasant stranger. He just greeted you sometimes, helped you a bit on your archery class. He'll sometimes tie your shoes when you didn't wanna bend down, or gave you notes when you were rehearsing for a play. Probably the closer you ever got were those times he would just purposefully mess up your hair when you were chatting with your friends and maybe that one time he... Oh.
I hate to do this, you leave no choice, can’t live without you.
And that's when he finally stopped bothering Mister D, right before looking at you and freezing you on a childish emotion.
Love me or hate me, we will be both standin’ at that altar.
It didn't felt much like a threat. Not even when he pulled you a little closer.
Or we will run away to another galaxy, you know.
Can we? fucking brown eyes taking the best of you.
You know that I am so in love with you, I'll go anywhere you go.
And you realized that's not even how the song goes, before he twirled you around.
Can I just be honest? Have a speck of your time?
Say yes. Say yes. Promise I'll be good.
'Cause really I feel you takin every bit of my mind.
And I must say, I think that it's love.
And he stopped singing, the music kept running for a couple counts more before Charlie turned it off. You were just looking at each other, him being considerably more nervous than you, though he did tried to hide it and you not quite so.
Your silence went for too long and he had to break it first.
"Happy birthday?"
And that made you laugh before you caught him on a giddy hug of excitement. He looked at Charlie from over your shoulder, he couldn't believe that shit actually worked.

chittaphon “ten” leechaiyapornkul, waterbender - dancer and medic-in-training
ten is notably one of the most flexible performers there are. not only is he flexible in terms of his body, but he flexible in anyway. he’s one of the most open-minded people you’ll meet; he’ll say whatever comes to mind whenever he wants, even if these thoughts can be quite suggestive. he was never one passionate about bending; he sees it as a natural thing, like breathing. what he does find passion in is how people bend - how people move to bend, the choreography behind the movements. he’d train his whole life in different gyms - not learning how to bend, but learning their movements. he learnt elegance from the water benders, flexibility from the air benders, precision from the fire benders, and agility from the earth benders. in fact, it was his idea for him and his usual dance partner to go to the illegal bending ring together; it would be an opportunity to observe the new styles, the combination of bending styles, and get inspired for new movements on stage. he has never desired to be the one in the ring; although he loves having the spotlight on him, but he found he was also useful in this community. he had medical knowledge and studied medicine in university. this was especially helpful that he was a waterbender who managed to advance his skill to healing capabilities. so, he managed to make sure to always get a front row seat during these fights; watching and focusing up close on the bodies of the fighters - how their feet touches the ground, how their fingers flow through the air, how their face lights up after a successful hit. it’s how he gets inspired for his next dances. dancing, afterall, is a side job - a hobby he occasionally gets paid for - something he does with his friends either on a stage during a talent show, dance showcase, or during a street performance. despite looking serious and partaking in quite serious occupations, he always manages to make his patients laugh. he’s one of the funniest guys around; brutally honest, open mind, reliable, and funny. he never has cruel intentions, but he’s not scared to slap a bitch when he needs to. luckily, he has his healing ability to make up for any injuries he may cause.

Monsta X Reaction – When They see You Dancing and/or Singing to ‘Shoot Out’
A/N: Shoot out is probably one of my favourite songs from the boys. Also the choreography totally kills me.
Shownu
He just arrived at your place, food in one hand a nice bouquet of flower in the other, because he’s the perfect boyfriend. He wanted to surprise you. He expected to spend some alone time with his girlfriend. What he didn’t expect was you listening to his song loudly singing and even dancing along while cooking.
“I should teach you how to dance this properly.”
Tumblr media
Wonho
He wanted to surprise you as well. He knew you were alone at home, and at that time you were usually sitting on the couch and watching TV while sipping some nice wine. He always thought that’s sexy for some reason. You looked sophisticated even if you were watching Sponge Bob. But that night when he opened the door he heard the song playing loudly and he found you in the living room, slightly tipsy, dancing while watching the live performance.
“What should I do with her?! She’s too cute!”
Tumblr media
Kihyun
He thought you some of the moves when you asked him, so it wasn’t a surprise when he got over to your place, he found you practicing the dance. He noticed that you added some feminine touch to the movements.
“I’m so proud of my Jagi! But now let’s dance together…vertically.”
Tumblr media
Minhyuk
For some reason he got all shy when he saw you singing and slightly dancing. He got all red and decided to just leave before you could notice him. But he made sure to make a video of you, so he could look back at it and be as proud as he is now.
Tumblr media
Hyungwon
You waited for him as he practiced with his members. You were in the back watching them and occasionally you took a picture or to maybe even a video for yourself. Minhyuk suggested to stop and relax for a few minutes. All eight of you talked and Kihyun came up with the idea to teach you the dance, at first you refused but they convinced you that it will be fun. And it really was. You learnt that you are a fast learner when it came to dancing. And as you danced, Hyungwon just stood there watching you like the proud boyfriend he was.
“Indeed my girlfriend.”
Tumblr media
Jooheon
You and Jooheon had a dance-off. He danced girl group dances and you did boy groups. Suddenly ‘Shoot Out’ came on and he didn’t expect you to know the full choreography without any mistake. To say the least he got shocked but proud as well.
“Jagi, why didn’t you tell me you know this?! What other dances do you know?!”
Tumblr media
I.M
Although he is quiet he was never afraid to show affection towards you. When you were at their dance practice and pointed out a mistake in Shownu’s dance, everyone was shocked. You showed him the right move and he accepted that he was wrong.
“That’s my girl right there!”

Oooh I love your headcannons! Can I get some swapfell skelebro? Maybe what it's like for them on the surface too? Please and thankyou
thank you! :D this also turned out very long so i’m putting it under a cut to save people’s dashboards
on the surface,,,,,, okay i actually have two au variations here
the first is one that i nickname fs-j, in which i’m a selfinserting little shit and the monsters’ system of hierarchy gets implemented into human society until eventually it’s almost the same as it was underground except they’re on the surface now
the second! .. is a little less thought out
but it has none of my selfinserting bullshit so we’ll go with that one!
sans & papyrus get their own house again instead of just bunking with undyne
papyrus is infamous in the neighborhood for bringing food for stray cats & sitting with them for hours just to keep them company
he’s allowed outside with a little more freedom now bc everything’s a little less dangerous and turns out the fresh air does him good
he still wears the collar with the panic button though, no matter what
he also still collects bracelets - except now he has a metric fuck-ton of them because they’re so much more readily available on the surface
sans finds them strewn about all over the house and gets annoyed about it
speaking of sans, he starts channeling his energy into work again
but,, probably not the kind of work you’d expect
he becomes a makeup artist on the surface
okaY HEAR ME OUT
he’s always had a knack for it, even underground - sometimes old knocked up makeup kits would wash up in the dump, if he was lucky there’d be brushes and stuff too
he practiced on undyne a lot purely because both of them got kinda bored
he tried on alphys one time but she nearly drop kicked him (she apologised and let him try after though, and she eneded up really liking it)
(he would’ve tried on papyrus too but none of the stuff he had really worked on bones)
and once he gets to the surface, where the stuff’s easily accessible as well as tutorials, tips, and other professionals? he’s 100% In On That
it’s a way for him to let himself be creative and have a sort of freedom while at the same time helping someone out, albeit in a little way, and i bet you there’s bound to be some humans who wanna see what a skeletal makeup artist can do
he ends up working mostly on actors in live performances like musicals and such
but the thing is, through doing that, he ended up helping out with choreography too
specifically, any fight scenes
while sans is definitely no stuck-up brat, he still has a habit of getting into situations he could’ve avoided if he’d just kept to himself - both good and bad situations
he ended up basically taking over the choreography for a fight scene in one of the plays, and now whenever he’s working there’s always someone who will come to him for tips on fighting stances or how to make that punch more realistic without actually hurting anyone
it probably helps that he’s incredibly flexible and light on his feet from all the time he spent dancing underground - he applies what he’s learnt from that into how he fights and honestly, it’s both elegant and absolutely fucking terrifying
but enough about him! let’s talk about papyrus!
he’s still sick
and he still hates it
but being sick means he doesn’t have to work, which is pretty okay by him, even if he still does kinda want to get a place in the guard out of pure spite
he ends up occasionally doing art commissions for people instead, emphasis on occasionally
he doesn’t really like being told what to do when he’s drawing
whenever she’s free, undyne drags him to the park so they can catch up in a relatively calm space that isn’t indoors
they stay there for as long as paps is able, sometimes alphys will come along too
he convinces sans to let them keep a stray cat that he found; she’s called whiskey and is an absolute attention slut and both the brothers adore her

ASTRO for Singles (2017 November issue)
Give us a hint about your new album. Cha Eunwoo: If previously we were "shy boys who fell in love" then I think with this album, it’ll be the complete opposite of what we’ve done up till now with fans who look at us being the ones to feel shy and skittish as they listen to the song. Instead of a boy who beats about the bush because he feels bashful, fans will be able to see a straightforward and manly ASTRO (laughs).
Are there any goals you would like to achieve through promotions of the new album? JinJin: Ranks aren’t everything but I think I’ll be really happy if we won no.1 on a music show. I also hope that we’ll get more chances to communicate (with our fans) through many more events other than fansigns and fanmeetings.
Is there another method like your solo concert held last July in which you can communicate even better with your fans? Cha Eunwoo: Thanks to our fans, we were the ones who gained strength instead. Should I describe it as a moment where we found another reason as to why we need to work even harder in the future? For our Japan concert, we prepared a separate song in Japanese and surprisingly, the Japanese fans sang along from start to finish so I was extremely touched.
Did you make any mistakes? Cha Eunwoo: We wanted to show a different side of ourselves during the concert so we made fresh arrangements of songs already under our belts and also fixed the choreographies. But because of that there were occasional moments on stage where we got mixed up. Once when I made a mistake, I copied JinJin hyung who was standing in front of me but turns out he got the choreography wrong too so we were moving around in a state of confusion mid-performance (laughs). Yoon Sanha: It was hard getting the timing right for when we would change clothes as the song changes. MJ hyung and JinJin hyung also urgently ran for the loo halfway through (laughs).
I heard that before you debuted, you put up performances for around 8 weeks at the concert venue of an amusement park. Yoon Sanha: We became more relaxed on stage ever since the experience from back then. There’s a clear difference from when we had zero experience. It’s because we learnt how to make eye contact with the audience and how to connect with them. We had to create new performances every week so having to always put our heads together and look up things for the week’s stage was kind of hard. A week really didn’t seem long.
When did you harbour the dream of wanting to stand on stage? Rocky: My mum was watching the TV when she came across Rain’s stage and exclaimed how cool he was. With that one word, I formally learnt dance since I was 4. MJ: When you watch concert videos, isn’t it mostly made up of the cheers and sounds of applause from the audience? I felt the bliss from those sounds. I imagined that one day I would also be able to hear the audience cheering and clapping for me as I stand on stage. Moonbin: I appeared in DBSK’s Balloons music video when I was younger. I looked at them and it was then when I started to nurture my dreams of becoming a singer. If the opportunity arises in the future then I’d like to stand on stage together with them. Yoon Sanha: Becoming a singer was my dad’s longtime dream. Even though he wasn’t able to realize his dreams because of complicated household circumstances, he would play the guitar every now and then at home and sing to me. Thoughts of wanting to fulfil my dad’s dream in his place crossed me. JinJin: After hearing at a young age of 7 that becoming a celebrity would earn me a lot money, I dreamt of becoming one. Later on I fell in love at first sight watching Rain’s and Lee Hyori’s stages on TV and went head in preparing myself.
When was the moment you were the most proud of after having achieved your dream of becoming a singer? Rocky: As I was nurturing my dream, I would gain strength whenever I listened to music and there were lyrics I could empathise with. Now that I’ve become a singer myself, I think I can be a source of strength to someone else. A sense of responsibility is instilled in me just by having those kind of thoughts. JinJin: I would talk to our fans through our official fancafe and we’d share our concerns with one another. Even now I’m still amazed at and proud of how we can give each other strength just through simple replies to comments or through short posts alone.
If there was a singer that ASTRO would like to take after? MJ: Shinhwa who have maintained their firm teamwork for really long. I especially want to resemble them in terms of their constantly joyous atmosphere.
I noticed you were pulling pranks non-stop throughout the filming for today’s pictorial. ASTRO are definitely cheerful. MJ: There’s no chance for us to be bored when the six of us are gathered together. In the dorm when one of us starts messing around, we’d react to him one after the other (laughs).
I heard the eldest MJ and the youngest Sanha are like 'Tom and Jerry'. Moonbin: Not too long ago I spotted the two having a water fight between themselves with the water from our water purifier. They’d get sulky with each other but also make up quickly.
Having six guys go around together would always make it feel like a sitcom. Cha Eunwoo: We have an even number of members so it’s good for betting. Even when we eat or drink coffee we’d have to go into it with a game no matter what. We’re recently really into bowling and screen baseball. JinJin: Everyone puts their lives on the line the moment we start a game. MJ: We were looking for new methods of stress relief and started healthily betting. Though if our team loses then it just means the stress continues to pile on (laughs).
There are people who relieve their stress with work. JinJin: I’ve been completely immersed in rap making. I get topics for my lyrics from various movies. Even with love stories, there are different kinds. I recently watched the movie 'Her' and tried writing lyrics about the emotions I felt. Rocky: I’d watch movies and then put myself in the situations which the protagonist faces. I’d write my lyrics imagining what I would say or what I would do in that moment if I was the protagonist.
I heard that Eunwoo is an exceptionally hardworker, one who doesn’t lose out to ASTRO’s rappers. The no.1 thing on your bucket list is apparently "obtaining 20 licenses"? Cha Eunwoo: I’ve got some leisure time lately so I started looking all out into the licenses and classes which I was originally interested in. At the residents’ center in my neighbourhood, you can learn sign language for only $2 per month. It’s a pity I couldn’t find a time in my schedule since I got busier because of comeback preparations. I also looked up the license for being a soccer referee. Apparently you need to sit down for a written test and be a referee for more than 100 matches. So I’ve given up on that license and started on tennis (laughs).
If ASTRO were to set a no.1 on their bucket list which they definitely want to see realised by this year? JinJin: Year end award ceremonies are an opportunity for us to a show a diverse performance on a stage that is so much bigger than our usual ones. We want to repay the huge amount of love we’ve received this year through a cool performance.
What kind of group do you want to be remembered as in the future by the public? JinJin: I hope their moods get lifted just by hearing the ASTRO name alone. If we were soda-like 'refreshing idols' in the summer then for this autumn, you’ll be able to meet an ASTRO that is of course refreshing but even sexy as well.

[TRANS] CeCi China August 2017 Issue with WINWIN
Tumblr media
If we were to say that among all the idol groups, NCT127 is a group who has accomplished a lot in music, dares to experiment, and that their gradual change from a young and inexperienced group to now a more mature group with a whiff of ability to influence, then maybe you’ll be able to read and understand Dong Sicheng. This boy is one of the best dancers of the group, he puts in the energy a youth has with his mature charms together, combining his cool personality and fashionable image that blends well together, and as well as exhibiting them all together with music and dance.
Dong Sicheng and Ceci’s meeting was set for an afternoon during the earlier days of June, and there weren’t much entourage nor an extravagant publicized set. His tall height and lean body, with the soft breeze that is blowing past lightly lifting up his clothes, combining with a newcomer’s feeling of nervousness and sense of unfamiliarity, as well as the unchanging expressions of the “perfect male idol” he is in front of the media’s cameras, bring about the anticipation and curiosity people have for his future, it seems like this is the charisma that young people possess.    During the interview, this boy manages to get used to us easily. Most of the time, he was serious and direct with his answers, and when faced with the editor’s impromptu questions, he would always smile politely, and then stop and think carefully about an answer, giving off the vibes of a shy young boy. For a rookie that debuted only for a year, all of Dong Sicheng’s replies were right to the point, to use popular internet phrases to describe, it means that his answers were sincere and less rigid. The editor found on the internet that fans described him as someone who “sincerely loves to play around*”  and during their interaction, the editor managed to see that for themselves. Bright and clear exterior, natural and unrestrained way of communicating, poses and angles that were approved easily for the shoot, his excellent control of expressions and as well as his ability to manipulate with the props on the set, it is easy to forget that this is boy is only 19 years old. Up until the shoot for the first outfit is over, probably due to his years of on-stage experience and the understanding towards the needs of the photographer, while looking through the pictures he received many praises from the staffs that were present, only then Dong Sicheng’s face let out a relaxed expression.
* t/n: That’s actually an internet phrase, or like a way chinese fans describe Winwin’s personality however I’m not too sure if i’m right but i hope that is what the phrase roughly means!
PROS AND CONS OF DANCING
As of June, the 3rd mini album < NCT #127 CHERRY BOMB>  of Korea’s rookie group NCT 127, which Dong Sicheng is a part of, has entered the charts. Not disappointing the expectations of others with regards to their music, the style of their new album has improved from their previous ones, and the genre of this album is “hip-hop & electronic” combined with sexiness, maturity, elements of capability, as well as the slight weakening of the young and inexperienced appeal that was on their previous album, bringing to us a more powerful and trendy work of music. Therefore having such an experimental and conceptualized type of song as their title track, the choreography can not be done carelessly, more tricks and challenges were thrown to the group, and for Dong Sicheng who’s forte is dancing has to shoulder this responsibility.
Some get to know their surrounding by constantly moving around, while others have to be in a familiar environment, only then they will be able to calm down; however, to Dong Sicheng, dancing is his way of getting used to communicating with the world, and also the biggest “luck” in life. From the unwillingness to comply with his parent’s suggestion of taking up dancing at the start, to entering a dance academy in the end, then getting into Central Academy of Drama, till now debuting in a foreign country & walking towards bigger stages, Dong Sicheng has walked on this road for over 10 years. During the start, from playfully skipping classes to refusing to attend training sessions, through the way he describes them I could hear that his past was still vividly etched in his mind. Also, the delightfulness of dancing and the run-in with it motivated him even more to find happiness and possibilities in dance. To explain in Dong Sicheng’s words, dancing is like a friend that grew up with him, understanding each another, and also occasionally crossing paths with one another. The intimate relationship between him and dance can not be compared with anything else in the world. And so during the intervals of the shoot, at moments where he was unable to get the pose, similarly to the times during backstage where he feels the most nervous, he would unknowingly use dance to calm himself down. And when the spotlights on stage light up for him, along with all the audiences’ attention on him as he dances, that is the moment where Dong Sicheng feels the happiest and relaxed, this “lucky” attachment to dance allowed him to become the brightest star on stage.
Similarly to sports, dance practices were never said to be easy, and to Dong Sicheng it was no exception. On the contrary, because he was familiar with dancing, he had to put in, even more, effort and work even harder. Dong Sicheng said himself that he was the stubborn type, and in his fan’s point of view, his stubbornness only arises towards certain situations. And in terms of dancing, a lot of it really goes into constant practicing so as to polish his skills. From the earliest of wanting to strengthen his thigh muscles, he treated morning jogs as though it was something extremely normal, and after he joined the team, he took their difference in skills and concluded that his skills were “weaker” compared to them, and within a year, he broke out of the original way of dancing to traditional Chinese dance that he learnt over the years, and picked up the essence of modern dance, incorporating the rhythm and beats of modern dance to his usual way of dancing. And behind all those sweat, only after his performance on stage is over that his heart feels contented, and those sweat are the reason for the smile on his face.
A BOY TO A MAN
Speaking of changes, seeing the staffs around him from his debut till now, the biggest change so far is the process whereby he transformed from a boy to a man. Being a trainee from the start, a young and inexperienced boy with eyes full of confusion and vitality, till the young boy who was nervous for his first appearance on “Day Day Up”, and now enjoying his time on stage as a newly promoting idol group, in this 1 year Dong Sicheng’s vision has became more determined, his Korean has gotten more proficient, and the staffs that were by his side has also become more like a family to him.
Raising this up, Dong Sicheng actually laughed shyly and embarrassedly, as he used the words “I’ve matured” to describe his own growth. To him, this past year was a lot more on learning and adapting. Being the only Chinese member of NCT127, the difference in language, culture, and way of living was one of the things he had to work hard on adapting to, besides being on stage. When he first stepped into Korea the custom of greeting based on seniority was one of the barriers he faced, and the way he got used to it was by starting it bit by bit. In the beginning it was hard to communicate with his other members due to the language barrier, however, after spending time together and knowing each other better, they became an inseparable team. Reminiscing the events that happened the past 1 year, Dong Sicheng will always bring up the mistakes he made as a newcomer, enlivening up the atmosphere. And at the place of shooting, the editor saw that he (sicheng) could comfortably use Korean to communicate with the staff, and even considerately bought drinks for them, everyone was just like friends working in beat together, this is all because of his day after day of hard work which made this relationship inextricably linked.
The passing from a boy to a man may just be a state of life, but yet he still has that calm and understanding mindset, at the same time not losing the inquisitive and spirit a boy has. This is probably the most important time of our lives, we can become braver in unfavorable circumstances, and stronger in favorable circumstances. And the so called pain and self-discipline will eventually turn into something good that remains. Every nice surprise is a reward after those hardships. For the Dong Sicheng who will grow with experience, and will gradually have a more confident attitude, and welcome the every single stage that he will be a part of, and will also appear with an impressive attitude, to showcase his own form of success, will definitely be able to write out his own annotation for success as well. Young ones are invading, let’s anticipate the future.

Opening number - Beautiful.
We started at the top of the show and began with learning the harmonies and blocking for the opening song, Beautiful. The song is 8 minutes long in duration and is crucial to the show as it introduces the majority of the characters and sets the scene. Veronica is used to introduce everyone and gives a brief back story behind each character, this could almost make the audience feel that it is their first day at Westerberg High School and we’re giving them a tour.
The first line the ensemble sing is “Freak! Slut! Burnout! Bug-eyes! Poser! Lard-ass!” which tells you that you’re in a high school where everyone hates each other and is simply trying to survive each day without being bullied or taunted. These insults are shouted with a fighting effort with a staccato delivery, which means they’re spoken sharply, and they match the musicality of the music behind the lyrics. There are stressed beats in the music to highlight the sharpness of the song which could be an attempt to make us feel things like anxiety, hatred and fear.
The ensemble have a difficult job by opening up the show as we need to be able to communicate to the audience that we’re in a high school and where everyone sits regarding social status. The Heathers are at the top end of social status whereas Veronica and everyone else are fighting fighting to survive at the bottom.
Craig Mason from Theatre Folk says “A strong ensemble is the same as a strong cast – actors who play well-defined characters. Every actor in the ensemble should have an individual character” (The Theatrefolk Blog, 2019). This means that to give every character on stage depth then we need to look at every characters back story regardless of whether they’re a main role or not. By putting in the background work behind your character means “the more your ensemble creates dimension to their characters, the more alive they’ll appear on stage” (The Theatrefolk Blog, 2019).
To help me to create an ensemble character I looked at Stanisklavski’s 7 Questions which are:
Who am I?
Where am I?
What time is it?
What do I want?
Why do I want it?
How will I get what I want?
What must I overcome to get what I want? (Questions, 2019).
I have been thinking about these questions for every scene that my character is in to better understand why I’m in the scene and what I bring to it.
To make a more detailed description of our ensemble character we can also look at these list of questions:
Tumblr media
In the build up to the Heathers entrance, every character is frantically rushing around on stage trying to get where they’re going and be ready for when the Heathers arrive. The ensemble stand in line and create a tunnel for the three Heathers to walk through. This is a huge visual representation of how much power and control the Heathers have over the school and it shows how much every student is willing to do to be their friend. The musicality of the song changes for the Heathers entrance into a more angelic and soothing sound along with the singing qualities from the ensemble, they change from a fighting effort to an indulging effort creating more light and sustained notes.
Blocking/choreography.
Our director allowed us to create our own movement for certain sections of this song which is a rarity as it’s not very often that any cast member is asked to create something in a show due to rehearsal time constraints or the show is a repeat from a previous tour and they already have choreography that works.
At the start of the song all of the ensemble are on stage in freeze frame positions. I’m picking my nose and bent over taunting my friend that I’m going to wipe my boogies on them, I chose this position to really play up to the fact that we’re supposed to be in high school and we need to communicate across just how immature everyone is. I believe I have created a strong opening position that will communicate clearly to the audience and have followed the movement by me fighting with my friend and then running off to play tag with them.
Before the Heathers walk on stage we have been given set choreography to be performed in a tunnel shape that is simple but really effective when done correctly. The choreography needs to be sharp and precise and is mostly arm movements, to ensure that I’m performing the choreography full out every time I can check weather I’m stretching and straightening my arm as high as possible and using muscular tension so that if someone were to try and move my arm they wouldn’t be able to. I need to ensure that my fingers are spanned out and that my posture is tall and correct. It’s very easy to occasionally have the wrong posture when you’re making a conscious effort to ensure you have good posture. Sometimes over working your spine can lead to your pelvis tilting instead of being kept in a neutral position which can be seen below.
Tumblr media
(Swolept.com, 2019)
At the end of ‘Beautiful’ there is a small section of choreography that is used to symbolise a celebration for Veronica as being accepted into the clique of Heathers. By chance, our director tried out movement that we as a cast have previously learnt in one of our dance classes. The movement fit perfectly with the music which shows just how versatile choreography can be, our director changed the dynamic of the choreography but everything else was still the same - using choreography that we already knew saved so much time and now we are able to clean and polish movement that we are already familiar with.
Character choices.
Ensemble character:
Throughout the number I have given myself motivations so that I’m walking with a purpose everywhere I go on stage and have created a back story. In the song I’m showing a new student around the school and teaching them that if they’re going to survive, they need to be able to defend themselves and bully everyone else before they get a chance to be bullied. My character isn’t malicious to teachers or other students but can defend themselves against anyone apart from Kurt, Ram and the Heathers; as these are people that my character is cautious of. When it’s possible, my character will challenge Kurt, Ram or the Heathers if what they’re doing is unnecessarily cruel or causes harm to other students.
As I’m showing the new student around the school I’m filling them in on who to avoid and who’s nice as nobody did that for my character.
Ms. Fleming:
There is a small scene within ‘Beautiful’ where my character Ms. Fleming is introduced and interacts between Heather Chandler and Veronica. For Ms. Fleming, this is a regular occurrence of catching the Heathers late to class and receiving a poor excuse from them - this is confirmed by how quickly she doesn’t tolerate their excuse and gives them a punishment of detention for a week.
When my character interacts with the Heathers I make sure to hold my ground and ensure that I have good posture to show that she’s not threatened by the Heathers and that just because they may have power over the students does not mean they have power over her. Ms. Fleming confirms this by issuing detention to assert her dominance over the Heathers.

A male Belly Dancer's passionate struggle against all odds
“Is this the way to Eshan Hilal’s house?”, I ask two teenagers perched on a balcony in a narrow street of East Delhi.    “The belly dancer?” comes a reply laced with sarcasm, followed by laughter.    “”Yes”.     Two other people I stop for directions also snigger at me before I find myself sitting in a small room on the roof of a house, on the hot Thursday afternoon.    24-year-old Eshan Hilal is like any other young Pathan man-- tall, lean and sharp-featured-- but his profession and his gender fluid dressing sets him apart in many ways, to the point of being called “feminine” by some and a “Kafir” by some others.     Eshan is a belly dancer or how people usually put it, a male belly dancer. A tag he doesn’t want for himself.     Adorned in oxidised silver jewellery, a flowy black skirt and a kurta rolled up to expose his belly, Eshan steps out of his room in the sweltering heat to practice for the auditions of an upcoming dance reality show.     He isolates his body movements and sways with the music. Nothing looks “feminine” about his dance. His belly dance, however, seems to be on point.     His turns are sharp and his eyes focussed, deep and expressive.     As we sit to talk, he pulls out a bunch of photos of Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit. Someone who has inspired scores of girls in India to dance. She inspired Eshan too. In fact, one cannot miss the glimpses of her style in Eshan’s belly dance.     “Dance is something which I started doing from my childhood. I started learning Kathak because I was a huge fan of Madhuri Dixit. I was so much into Kathak, travelling, performing and doing events but there was a void space,” he says.    He was talking about freedom of movement, and above all, he was looking for the freedom within to accept his interests.     “In Kathak, you can’t move your hips, it is called Badtamaeezi. I came across a lot of male belly dancer videos on YouTube and fell in love with the dance form,” he says.    But the road to becoming a professional belly dancer was not easy. Eshan comes from an orthodox Muslim family, where dancing is not a fitting profession, especially for a man.    “My parents say dancing is a Taboo in my religion. It is Haram. They never stopped me as a kid thinking I’ll give up dance when I grow up. They thought I would realise how girlish dancing was. But when I told them I wanted to be a choreographer, they asked me to quit.”    He didn’t.    For about eight months now his parents and younger siblings--a brother and two sisters--haven’t been talking to him. They live in the same house but Eshan has a separate portion for himself.     “My father says dancing belongs to a category where you entertain people. We don’t entertain, we get entertained.” Eshan says.    When I meet his father, Eshan stands outside on the steps of his part of the house, listening to our conversation.    “Dancing is dirty. Our religion doesn’t allow it. It is Haram. Even a rupee that he earns through dancing is Haram for us. We will never support him.” Mohammad Hilal (50) says.    Back in their village in eastern Uttar Pradesh, family members taunt Eshan’s parents saying his son has become a “nachaniya”, a derogatory term used for female dancers. This doesn’t go down well with Mohammad.    “I have tried telling them that there is nothing feminine about it.Your body is moving to a sort of music. How can you call this feminine? There are no gender roles in art forms. No such published book that says that. Since childhood, I have been listening to these things. Don’t cross your legs and sit because girls do that. Don’t use so much of your hands while talking because girls do that. There was a constant comparison between me and my brother. He was the normal one and I, an abnormal. I never understood that. Belly Dance gave me solace from these things.” Eshan says.    His struggle to separate his gender from his dance is not just limited to family, friends and the society. Even in his world of escape, there are stereotypes he has had to fight.    Belly Dancing in India is still not considered a proper art form. Many call it vulgar. And it is mostly associated only with women.     “People are quite uninformed about belly dance here in India. When women perform belly dance they are labelled by some people as characterless. In the case of a man, people question his sexuality. Just because I am a belly dancer, people call me queer and gay. I don’t understand how the choice of a dance form that I perform defines my sexuality. If I was doing hip hop or some other dance form that is considered masculine. The scenario would be different.” he says.     This was perhaps one of the reasons why dance schools in India were not ready to teach Eshan Belly dance. He says he approached a famous school for five years till they were finally ready to take him in.     “I tracked so many schools in Delhi and Mumbai. So many popular dance schools outrightly refused to take me in. They said they don't teach belly dance to men.” He says.     Many male belly dancers here take to cross-dressing. Eshan says this practice further fuels the gender stereotypes.    “Often people ask me why don't macho and masculine men opt for belly dancing. They do. If you see al these American, Egyptian and Chinese belly dancers they are so masculine and macho. They are married and have kids and they are belly dancers. And they wear those proper male sharky costumes.” he says. “There are so many boys in India who cross-dress. They wear fake wigs and bralettes and they dress up like women and perform in public spaces and call themselves male belly dancers. Which is absolutely wrong and leaves a wrong impression of the art that belly dance is.”    Over the years Eshan has learnt to not let prejudices impact his interests. Fashion designing is one of his hobbies. He likes designing clothes that are gender fluid, a form of dressing he himself has embraced. He started wearing heels designed for men when he was 20, became androgynous in his dressing and belly dancing he says gave him liberty.     “Since childhood, I was a very spineless sort of a guy. Very perplexed. I though I have some issues in me and that’s why my parents scold me and the society teases me. I always thought I was wrong and they were right but I explored myself through this dance form and realised there is nothing wrong with me. It's just the perception of the people who can’t take different things.” he says.     Eshan now earns a living by teaching kids belly dance and occasionally doing wedding choreography. He now looks forward to making a name in the world of belly dance. He says the only dream that now remains is winning the love and support of his parents.     “My only achievement will be when my family accepts me for who I am publicly and proudly says he is our son. He is a belly dancer.”

Dance Blog 3
Within today’s lesson we started with warming up our bodies to prepare and ensure that we are using safe dance practise so that we know we aren’t going to pull a muscle or cause injury. First we started with a warm-up to get the blood pumping to our muscles. Working with isolations, our legs which involved two types of cardio, arms and core these are all important techniques we need to warm-up properly. Then in the second part of today’s lesson we worked on our techniques only this time we did peer observation forms on one another. We choose one peer at random to evaluate for this we completed all of our techniques which were the following plies,Tendu, jumps, kicks centre side and back, pirouettes, chaines, triplets  and this new technique we had learnt were kicks on the floor side front and back. After each of the exercise we gave our peer some verbal feedback throughout the techniques so they could see where they were working at the whole time and then we swapped over so that we could observe them properly.
In the lesson today I used both physical and interpretive skills and I can see from my feedback of how much I have progressed throughout dance compared to when I first started. I have noticed that I am much better at coordination compared to how I was at the start not being able to correspond with legs and arms and now although I am still finding it a bit hard it’s getting much easier from the practice I have had. I feel much more confident about my dancing which made today a lot easier for me as at the start of the class I wasn’t confident about my peers seeing my work as of now I am as I feel I know the routines really well which shows me at my strong point and shows how enthusiastic and how much energy I am willing to put into my dance work which as meant I able to concentrate more on adding in facial expressions and has gave me the chance to work on it and notice that this is a key important skill needed and is one of the most important because if you don’t use facial expressions it could immediately put someone of watching you as there is no story to what you are performing but also it can put across that you aren’t enjoying it. My ability to focus has got much stronger and I am able to focus on just me and work on my strengths and weaknesses giving it time and effort to make it the best it can be.
My professionalism within the lesson today has been without a doubt the best lesson in which I have worked and showed of my techniques to my peers as even when I got a few things wrong compared to normally I still carried on with what I was doing. I arrived to dance on time fully equipped with water etc. Ready to start the lesson I gave it all my energy and showed off my skills to best of my ability staying focused at all times and keeping confident in myself.
My strengths and Weaknesses of today’s lesson/ Action plan.
Strengths:
1.  My confidence within dance as improved a lot more and I try a lot more compared to some of my previous weeks where I would just give up I have learnt how to keep going as small steps will help it to improve much more than to just stop trying.
2. I am using facial expressions more and more which is contributing to my work massively and making the techniques look better when performing them to an audience.
3. My musicality as improved with the previous lessons we have had and I am able to keep in time with the others dancers as well as following the beat to the music and keeping in time with that so that the steps fit in perfectly and the whole thing looks more confident.
Weaknesses:
1. when performing and using my arms to balance I need to relax my shoulders as at times I am keeping them tense which isn’t allowing me to perform the moves in a nice graceful way. This could come across as me struggling to improve this and make my arms feel secure when performing the certain techniques I will practice the arm exercise in order to release the tension have In my arms I can do this once a night in order to make sure my arms are getting stronger and steady so they are able to work alongside the music rather than against it. I will achieve this in next couple of weeks and track my progress by recording myself doing this.
2.  I need to work on my point when extending my leg this is needed for all sorts of techniques and choreography but mainly within today’s lesson was tendu. I feel as though this wobbly due to me not having enough balance or weight placement. In order to ensure that this is made stronger in the future I need to keep my weight central and working on extension to ensure that this is improving I will work on my balancing. My doing some of the leg warm-up exercises for fifteen minutes a night to make sure that it will improve by working on this in my spare time.  I will observe my progress before next week’s lesson.
3.  I need to work on my eye contact as occasionally I get two focused on the steps I am doing within the technique exercises. As when performing I don’t always give it to the audience which can come across as though I am disengaging them in my performance. I feel that the mirrors at the front of the room will help me to keep eye contact with audience at the same time I can keep an eye on my steps and the audience normally sit this way so I roughly know where they will sit so I put my posture upright and focused my head towards their attention so I keep them interested throughout. To improve this in my spare time in between lessons  I will go into the dome and practice my techniques and get a peer to come and watch me to see if or not I am giving them eye contact and engaging them within my own personal performance.

Contemporary dance evaluation
1, Do you feel that there were ways that you could have improved your development throughout rehearsals?
Yes I do, if I had listened to more feedback given, even when it wasn’t being given to me, I could have realised what I needed to do better. Also, come to college and do extra in my days off to practice I could have known the routines better so it would have looked smoother and more graceful. I also missed a couple of sessions due to illness, and I needed to come in and catch up on what I had missed, and this would have meant that I could have been more confident in my movements.
2, Provide 3 strengths you have discovered within your technique exercises and discuss how they have helped your development in dance.
Firstly, one of my strengths is my timing, this is crucial because if you’re out of time, is throws the whole routine off. I felt like I had good timing in this dance, as I didn’t step out of time at any point and I made sure that all my movements stretched into the pieces of music they fit into.
Secondly, another strength is being focused on my movements at all times in the routine. This is because if you lose focus then all of the emotion dries out of the piece and it becomes quite rough and boring. If you show focus and confidence in all the movements you do, it makes the whole routine look smoother.
Lastly, I think my facial expression is another strength of mine, because I could show all the emotion of the piece through my face. As this is quite a determined and strong song about being praised, you need to show a very purposeful and strong look on your face.
3, Provide 3 areas of improvement.
Firstly, I need to improve on my core strength and balance, because this unit of dance was all about core strength and being able to hold difficult positions for a substantial amount of time, which was very hard for me to do as I have little core strength. I will improve my core strength by doing core exercises 3 or 4 times a week, this will make me stronger so I will be able to achieve my goals.
My next weakness would be turns and pirouettes, as I don’t have the ability do more than one at once because I lose my balance. I need to practice my turns, using focal points to help me become better.
Lastly, another weakness is flexibility, this is because when I am doing certain moves in the dance, I am not doing them to my full potential because I know that if I do regular stretches then they would look a lot better if I was more flexible. Also I would be able to raise my legs higher and keep them there during kicks.
4, see above, these are the same strengths and weaknesses that I had for my exercises and my performance of this piece of choreography.
5, Did you enjoy performing this style?
To start with, I did not like this style of dance because I have never done it before and it seemed more difficult than any dance I had ever done. Later on in the term, it begun to get easier for me, as I begun to learn the choreography and it started to become more enjoyable. When I stared to learn the set piece, I found it quite exiting because it was a style of dance that I had never done before and it was a nice smooth piece of choreography that was fun to get into. Also, the set piece was something that you could really get into and become emotionally involved with it.
6,     How do you feel your abilities matched the requirements of the style? Have the strengths that you already have helped to learn the style?
The requirements of this style were very difficult. They require a lot of balance, core strength and focus. I couldn’t fulfil some of the requirements such as core strength (see above) and also it was difficult at first to incorporate facial expressions into the style, as I was only used to smiling and being happy in dances but this style of dance needed more passionate and determined faces. I feel like a strength that I had before is the ability to change and adapt to different styles quickly and quite easily because as soon as I’ve had some instruction, I will often be able to do it without hesitation.
7, What skills and techniques did you build through exercises that helped you in the choreography?
Over the course of the term, I built a number of skills and techniques. To start off with, I learnt about the importance of breathing and contractions in contemporary dance. This helped the choreography because in the set piece, a lot of the emotions could be seen through the breathing and contractions of the dancers, occasionally showing loneliness and compassion. Another was the fall and release technique, this was pushing your body so it’s just about to fall, then correcting your body so that it did not fall, but was still and strong.
