Exhibition Title: Marilyn

Press Release:
The Approach is delighted to present the first solo show in the gallery by New York-based artist Sara Cwynar. In her practice, which includes photography, installation, and film, Cwynar surveys the transitory object-life of visual matter in our time of image infatuation. Her composite photographs of found objects and images court feelings of time passing and glamour fading. Using studio sets, collage, and re-photography the artist produces intricate tableaux that draw from magazine advertisements, the internet, postcards, or catalogues.
Marilyn features Red Film, the third film in a trilogy exploring how desire manifests through objects. Taking the tone and structure of an educational film, Red Film critiques capitalism’s persuasive, constant pressure to conform and consume; questioning the effects of this torrent on the self; and pointing to the use of ‘high art’ to sell aspirational merchandise. The film avoids drawing any conclusions but rather tries to recreate how it feels to be a human in relationship to intensified 21st century media culture. Centred around several objects and ideas— Cezanne brand jewellery boxes and Cezanne brand makeup, red commodities such as lipstick, contemporary red Comme des Garçons clothing, and a 1985 mustang convertible, Red Film combines footage of a makeup factory, dancers, a famous Rubens painting and the red convertible in a photo studio. The film touches on notions of truth and appearance, about our cultural insistence on connecting beauty with truth, and what one can know about someone’s inside character by looking at the outside. In Red Film, Cwynar speaks through a proxy’s voice while hanging upside down, with the inside of her body pressing on the outside. The narration for these scenes is written in the style of ‘influencer’ Instagram captions—declarative, at times insightful, and often narcissistic. Throughout, ideas and theories, and even ways of talking, are shown to be as easily reproducible as commodities—how theory and even language can become kitsch.
Six smaller video loops complete the installation with Red Film. Marilyn conveys an endless circling of objects, images, and value signifiers. The same images (and bodies) are used over and over—be it Marilyn Monroe’s body, a reclining nude in a classical painting, or a model on an E-commerce site. In the Annexe space, a continuous line of photographic works echoes the themes from Red Film, but with still elements, in contrast to the constant scrolling of the film installation. The photos and looping videos include a different red car once valued for being fast that now functions as a museum relic, models posing with life-size reproductions of cut outs of Marilyn Monroe’s most iconic outfits, works of classical Greek and Roman art, images that signify the golden age of Hollywood, expensive handbags, cheap consumer objects, things that were once the height of value but have now faded, tobacco packaging, pantyhose, a Prada skirt, online shopping and its increasingly defunct counterpart the department store, and a pop star among other things. Many of the photos are shot from above so that different objects and images flatten into one.
The work in this show approaches cycles of buying, selling, and image-making from many different entry points. For some photographs, Cwynar worked with models from the popular online E-commerce site SSENSE.com. She became interested in these E-commerce models because of their endless and at times rote repetitions of the same three gestures. There is barely even a slip in their facial expression or movement. In her words, “I wanted to bring these women to my studio, to think through the multiplication of a person in images; how people are reproduced (and increasingly reproduce themselves) and how this process suggests an overwhelming amount of choice that isn’t actually a choice at all.” In other images Cwynar reworks pictures of the 2017 Jeff Koons Louis Vuitton bag collaboration—which appropriates five of the most famous paintings in Western art history. This appropriation continues themes explored in Red Film about how high art gets used to sell things, and what this tells us about what we find valuable. Marilyn explores the countless ways in which bodies, ideas, and works of art are all swept up in the same cycles, turned into images or objects in order to sell. A set of x-rays of Marilyn Monroe’s chest once sold for $45 000—as Cwynar says, “even the inside of her body was up for grabs.”

Vaping vs. Smoking Is it Better to Vape Than Smoke?
Since the emergence of e-cigarettes in 2003, many people have taken up vaping to stop smoking cigarettes. And for good reason, cigarette-smoking is responsible for nearly 480,000 deaths per year in the US alone. While the benefits of quitting cigarettes are monumental, finding alternatives to smoking that will help people get off cigarettes for good is not so easy. Here are a few reasons why vaping is the best alternative to smoking.
Vaping as an Alternative to Smoking
The immediate benefits of vaping vs. smoking are clear to anyone who has made the switch to e-cigarettes. Cigarette revenue increases every year and costs continue to go up. Cost is a very big factor and it is included in 3 of the benefits listed below.
The cost to vape on a monthly basis is considerably less than buying cigarettes, at least 50% less. It is a lot more in states where tobacco costs are higher. Typically, cigarette sales are between $5 and $8 (Los Angeles, CA) dollars per pack all the way up to $13 (NYC).
The cost for a bottle of e-liquid and a basic vape pen is under $50 to get started, and the monthly cost from there is only for the e-liquid at $30 per month for a 60 ml bottle. Discount websites and online coupons can lower these costs even more for greater savings. Vaping does not produce any odor that sticks to your hair, clothes, and on your breath because it contains no tar. No one will accuse you of smelling like an ashtray. Vaping produces only a mildly-scented vapor which dissipates within minutes so there is no odor to follow you around like smoking cigarettes.
Vapers are less dependent on their devices than smokers are with cigarettes. The body processes the nicotine in vapor differently. Without the other chemicals in cigarette smoke, the urge to vape is less intense so if you are at a sporting event there is no need to rush outside for a “smoke” and miss the highlights of the game.
A Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study published in Preventative Medicine in 2017, concludes that electronic cigarettes are less addictive than tobacco cigarettes. The group studied was comprised of 3,500 participants, 5% of whom were vapers and 95% were cigarette users (no dual use). The study showed that the participants who vaped tend to start vaping later in the day and can go longer periods between vapes when compared to the habits of the participants that smoked.
What is Vaping?
If you have never heard the term before or maybe don’t quite understand what all “vaping” entails, here is a short description. Vaping is the act of inhaling vapor through an electronic device and exhaling in a similar fashion to smoking a traditional cigarette.
The vaping device used may or may not look like a cigarette, but the effects are similar. Vaping is designed to satisfy a smoker's craving for nicotine, blowing out smoke, and the familiar hand-to-mouth habit associated with smoking. Believe it or not, these are three things make it hard for people to stay away from cigarettes once they quit.
Vaping exactly mimics these three things so many smokers-turned-vapers stay off cigarettes and are successful at quitting. Not all do, but a large portion of those who switch to vaping never go back to cigarettes.
Ingredients in Vape Juice
The ingredients in e-liquid that combine to produce vapor have been compared to the smoke produced by cigarettes. The chemical composition of the two is completely different. Cigarette smoke contains nicotine from tobacco leaves as well as tar, cyanide, ammonia, benzene and more. It is estimated that 4,000 or more harmful chemicals are in cigarette smoke.
Vaping liquid, on the other hand, includes only 4 ingredients: nicotine, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and flavoring.  Diacetyl was once used to simulate a buttery flavor in e-liquid recipes but was discontinued by some manufacturers after reports of a group of eight factory workers developed respiratory infections after being exposed to a large amount of the flavoring powder used to make the butter-flavoring for the popcorn made by the factory.
The amount used in e-liquid manufacturing is very small (drops) compared to the amount the factory workers were exposed to, but regardless, many companies have decided to make their e-liquids without flavoring chemicals like diacetyl.
Nicotine Free E-liquid
Many vapers choose vaping without nicotine after successfully quitting cigarettes. Since many online retailers allow consumers to customize the nicotine content in the vape juice purchased, it is possible to slowly reduce the amount of nicotine until it is no longer needed. Nicotine free vaping is popular with long-term vapers and all vape shops carry zero nicotine e-liquids.
Lowered Health Risks
While nobody can make the claim that electronic cigarettes are 100% harmless, it has been agreed that they are at least 95% less harmful than cigarettes. The CDC, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, and the Royal College of Physicians (UK) do not endorse vaping per se, but they all do agree it is less harmful due to fewer carcinogens being inhaled into the body through vaping vs.smoking cigarettes.
February UK Study Shows Vaping Less Harmful
In February of 2018, Public Health England published a report that concluded that vaping is less harmful than smoking.
Professor John Newton, Director for Health Improvement at Public Health England, said: “Our new review reinforces the finding that vaping is a fraction of the risk of smoking, at least 95% less harmful, and of negligible risk to bystanders. Yet over half of smokers either falsely believe that vaping is as harmful as smoking or just don’t know."
Smoking causes an increase in blood pressure, increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. A new study published in the British Medical Journal found that even light smokers who smoked less than a pack per day were at risk for cancer and heart disease.
Unfortunately, there have been no studies done yet to show the long-term effects of vaping 10 or 20 years from now. More long term studies are needed to provide data to the medical community and government agencies that vaping is a safe and an effective way to get smokers off cigarettes. It is nice to think that someday soon doctors may be writing prescriptions for e-liquid and vape pens as smoking cessation products.
Health Effects from Vaping vs. Smoking
We are all aware of the health issues related to smoking regular cigarettes. Cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, and lung disease are just a few smoking-related conditions that cost thousands of dollars per year in doctor bills and hospital stays. Studies show that smoking causes cancer and the above-mentioned associated conditions, we know that for a fact, but there is no evidence of vaping causing any of the same conditions. Media headlines mention studies linking cancer and vaping as clickbait to get their content read, but in reality, there is no evidence to prove that vaping causes cancer or any respiratory problems.
One study that said that vaping produces formaldehyde as a by-product of e-liquid being vaporized. But what they did not explain was that the researchers tested the liquid and vaping equipment at much higher levels of heat than any normal person would vape at.
Metal components and liquids can combine to produce noxious fumes when heated to abnormally high temperatures. This is a normal occurrence in the everyday world, but vapers do not routinely vape at high temperatures so there is no possibility of that happening with normal use. Anything taken to the extreme can have unpredictable consequences. Too much chocolate causes diarrhea but it’s not bad for you.
Side Effects of Vaping
Some people report side effects associated with vaping, but these are small and inconsequential. These are normal occurrences that would fit under numerous conditions.
Dry Mouth
One thing to understand is that vaping can cause you to become dehydrated so increasing your fluid intake is recommended. This is not only related to vaping because any number of things can cause dehydration.
Coughing
When you first begin vaping you may find yourself coughing for the first few days to a week. The body is attempting to adjust to inhaling vapor instead of smoke. The coughing is the lungs way of cleaning themselves of built-up tar and residue from smoking. Some people will quit vaping after a day or two because they developed a cough as a result and relate it to vaping.
Vaper’s Tongue
This one is a little tricky because it does not refer to the physical condition of the tongue itself. It refers to the loss of the ability to differentiate between flavors. If you vape the same flavor day-in /day-out for months on end sometime your taste buds will take a hiatus. This is a temporary condition and resolves itself with time. The issue is actually with the taste buds and not with vaping.
The main reasons why vaping is a better alternative to smoking is that it costs much less than smoking cigarettes. It doesn’t put off an odor to offend other people, including family members with sensitive noses. And lastly, you're reducing the number of chemicals going into your body daily.
Regulation to Keep Teens Off Tobacco
There are regulations in place to keep tobacco products and vapor products out of the hands of teens and youth in the US. It was revealed that a number of High school students vape sparking the FDA to consider banning flavored e-liquids. The figures are exaggerated of course and most teens admit to trying vaping after or instead of conventional cigarettes. Regulations include no sales to minors under 18, vape shops must check the ID of anyone under 27 years old, and online retailers need to age-verify all purchases.
The FDA worries that vaping will be a gateway to smoking but it seems more likely the other way around. Cigarettes taste nasty and more teens say they do it for the flavors and not for the nicotine as most are vaping "0" nicotine e-liquid. While banning flavors might discourage teens from vaping, it would also deter all the young adults of legal vaping age from being able to access flavored e-liquids either.
FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb says that their goal is to make sure that kids can't access any of the fruity-flavored products in convenience stores. Adult vapers agree with age-restricting products and support keeping these products away from young people. Hopefully, the FDA and the vaping community can reach a compromise that would keep flavors available for adult consumers but in a way that does not appear to target kids with advertising, packaging, or by any other means.
Flavors was a big debate, but it is a valid point. Kids are not the only ones attracted to sweet flavors. Adults like cereal flavors, sweets, fruits, and dessert flavors. Flavors are one of the things that set vaping apart from traditional cigarettes. The ability to choose your own flavors, nicotine strength and delivery system is a big plus.
Many new vapers have said that after switching to vaping they were looking better, feeling better, and even breathing better after quitting cigarettes tobacco. While that is not clinical evidence of vaping being healthier, it is worth mentioning.

Vaping is designed to satisfy a smoker’s craving for nicotine, blowing out smoke, and the familiar hand-to-mouth habit associated with smoking.
Yet over half of smokers either falsely believe that vaping is as harmful as smoking or just don’t know.“
Smoking causes an increase in blood pressure, increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.
And lastly, you’re reducing the number of chemicals going into your body daily.
Cigarettes taste nasty and more teens say they do it for the flavors and not for the nicotine as most are vaping "0” nicotine e-liquid. While banning flavors might discourage teens from vaping, it would also deter all the young adults of legal vaping age from being able to access flavored e-liquids either.
FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb says that their goal is to make sure that kids can’t access any of the fruity-flavored products in convenience stores.

California Will Pay Kids to Vape in Propaganda Videos
Are you 13 years old? Or a blue collar worker? Are you sober? Would you be willing to work 10-12 hours breathing secondhand smoke? How about vaping on camera?
You can be a star, baby!
A Los Angeles casting company is looking for actors to star in new anti-vaping ads being produced by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), probably as part of the agency’s Still Blowing Smoke campaign.
An ad found on Facebook describes exactly who they’re looking for:
GROUPS OF 13 YR OLD GIRL FRIENDS
GROUPS OF BOY & GIRL FRIENDS (13 YRS OLD)
REAL GROUPS OF FRIENDS (25-32 YRS)
REAL BLUE COLLAR WORKERS (25-32 YRS)
REAL TSA EMPLOYEES (25-32 YRS)
REAL GROUPS OF FRIENDS THAT ARE SOBER (25-32 YRS)
Previous CDPH ads, and the Still Blowing Smoke website, have been filled with images of young teenagers vaping, and even smoking — along with deceptive and dishonest misrepresentations of the scientific and policy debates around vaping. Still Blowing Smoke is an all-out attack on vaping, and though it’s supposedly aimed at preventing teen uptake, the relentless negativity and lies almost certainly convince lots of adult smokers to stick with combustibles.
youtube
The agency’s ads are frequently seen on TV in California, which would be surprising (because of the cost of TV advertising in the wealthiest U.S. state) if the ad campaign wasn’t backed by a $75 million grant from the CDPH’s California Tobacco Control Program.
Yes, that’s $75 million for anti-vaping propaganda. The California Tobacco Control Program also runs the Tobacco Free CA website, which has its own set of anti-vaping ads. Anti-vaping deception from the state of California is as common as wildfires and as thick as a mudslide.
(Still Blowing Smoke is the anti-vaping campaign that was brilliantly pre-empted and hijacked by Stefan Didak and Jason Downing, who found the original launch materials (not very well hidden online) and in one caffeine-fueled weekend created Not Blowing Smoke, a virtual mirror of the state-run site, but full of positive vaping messages and material skewering the expensive state-run campaign. Not Blowing Smoke has since morphed into an advocacy organization.)
Glendale-based Tiffany Company Casting has also reached out directly to vaping businesses, asking for help finding vape tricksters for the ads. Maybe they’ll replace some footage of the “real blue collar workers” with vape tricks. Or maybe they’re going to ask the tricksters to teach the “13-year-old girl friends” to blow vape rings.
John Cavanaugh, CEO of Vaping Industries, was surprised this week by a Facebook message from someone named Kellyanne O’Callaghan, who described herself as a Casting Associate at Tiffany Company Casting. Cavanaugh didn’t know her.
O’Callaghan was looking for people able to perform vape tricks, and asked for Cavanaugh’s help. Describing videos she had seen online of “some pretty amazing talented guys blowing vape rings and such” in one of Cavanaugh’s Costa Mesa vape shops, she wondered if he could connect her with some of the vapers. “We would LOVE to have them audition for our project,” she gushed.
She described the compensation for those who take part in the video shoots, and asked if he could set up Skype interviews with some of the vapers. Cavanaugh said he checked her profile on Facebook and found a post that included an ad for “the project.” Her description of the photoshoot described it as “Very poignant and important message.”
Apparently, it’s poignant to lie to smokers about a possible alternative that could save their lives. Note that she left those words out of her direct message to Cavanaugh — and also failed to mention that the ads would be used to misinform the public about vaping. Then again, she may not have known. Cavanaugh shot her down immediately — but she may be able to con another less sharp vape shop owner.
O’Callaghan’s Facebook post describes the photoshoot as a “non-union project,” which seems like a big no-no for the pro-union California tobacco control industry. (Unions helped tobacco control get a massive cigarette tax hike passed as part of the state’s 2016 Prop 56 vote.) But maybe they’re getting cheap as the $75 million well starts to dry. Perhaps members of some of the many Los Angeles-area film and TV unions will picket the shoot.
What kind of vapers would knowingly take part in ads used to demonize the very thing that saved their lives? We’ll find out soon. And, even more interesting, what kind of parent is such a stage mother (or father) that they would allow their 13-year-old to take this job? I suppose we should never be shocked by what people will do for a few dollars.
As the country’s largest state ramps up its war on e-liquid flavors — deliberately confusing vapes with actual tobacco products like little cigars — Californians can expect to see the lies flowing freely. And, as with all things in California, the rest of the country can expect the trend to move east.

Letting Go
Have you ever heard the story someone being at the bedside of a dying loved one and telling them it’s time to go?  Then at that moment, the loved one takes their last breath?  Have you ever experienced this yourself?  I had always heard these stories and on February 3, this happened to me. My 92-year-old mother had been living in a memory care facility for the past 6 years. It was so very hard to see her deteriorate to the shell of a person that she once was. She eventually stopped talking and was completely bed ridden.  My mother was vibrant, lively and active and if there was a plug to pull, she would have pulled it herself!  She would have never, ever wanted this.  Who would?
When I got to her room, she was breathing pretty heavy and my dad, who is 96, hadn’t arrived yet. I went to my mother’s bedside, stroked her hair and said it was OK to get going on her next journey. It was time for her to leave her old and tired body and go see her parents, sister and other family.  Right then she took her last breath.
We had prayed for her to be let out of her prison, but when it actually happens, the reality sets in that our mother is GONE!  The woman who gave birth to me and my sister, raised us, and helped take care of my son was gone forever. Our mother.
If you had an awesome mom that you lost much too early, I am so very sorry. That sucks and has to be so freaking hard. My mom was 92 and it was still hard.
The American Dream
Eloyce M. Miller (later Cornett) was born in Shawnee Oklahoma in 1924.  When she was 2 years old, mom, dad and her baby sister, Lowetta took a  Model T car over a wooden plank road to California where there was promise of work. My grandfather Pete did many things to keep the family afloat during the depression.  He was a ditch digger, a baker, a miner, a gas station owner, a farmer, a house fixer-upper, you name it. My grandmother Thelma worked right along with him. They moved around a lot!  Northern California (Nevada City, North San Juan, Auburn) then to Arizona. They moved up and down the state of California from Los Angeles to Northern California, a couple of times.
My mom graduated from Nevada City High School in 1942.  After high school, she worked as waitress, a dime store clerk, a machine shop worker, and a telephone operator. She eventually joined the Army and was stationed in Ft. Benning Georgia as a parachute rigger with the 82nd Airborne Division. It was there where she met my paratrooper dad, Marvin Cornett who had just returned from the war.  He was a  Jump Master, teaching new recruits how to jump out of planes.  My dad owned an Army surplus Harley motorcycle and they rode in the rain to the courthouse in Phoenix City Alabama and got married by a Justice of the Peace, who by the way, had tobacco stains on his shirt!  In 1946 my sister Marleen was born.  My dad got out of the Army briefly to try his hand in the civilian world, then re-joined the Army and made a career of it. The Army moved them all over the place. They lived in France and various states. I was born in 1959 in Illinois where my dad was an Army recruiter. We lived in a mobile home and my mother hated every minute of the 9 years we lived in snow country.
My mom was very happy when my dad retired from the Army and we moved back to Northern California to be close to her family and out of the snow.
My mom worked at McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento CA as a secretary, an avionics repair technician, and in a warehouse where she worked on a conveyor belt boxing and moving military supplies. She even drove a forklift.
When my mom and dad retired, they traveled.. They spent several years driving their motor home from Northern California to Mazatlan Mexico and would park there for six months out of the year. They took trips all over the US, Europe, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Alaska, Canada, Panama Canal, and the Caribbean. (I may be leaving out some spots)
She was a gifted artist (oil and acrylic), craft maker, seamstress, golfer, clogger, bowler, guitar player, belly dancer, world traveler and party hostess. (She loved to throw a party!)
Safe travels Mother!  See you on the other side!
To read my mom’s entire memoir in her own words, click here
There are a ton of pics and it’s a pretty awesome read.
Click here to see the music video to the song I wrote about her mom and dad. The lyrics were taken almost word for word out of her book.
My Mother- The Woman Who Made Me Letting Go Have you ever heard the story someone being at the bedside of a dying loved one and telling them it's time to go?
