Greetings and solicitations. I'm listening to the young wizards books now that they are in 'wide release' as it were and I, now being a well-aged nerd, found a connection that might not be one, but if it is, is very, very cool.
So young Nita et. al. are from Hempstead, NY on Long Island. It occurred to me that this town is not far from the original location which Mr. Robinson placed his famous bar with the highly coincidental name.
Comment? :)
It’s a coincidence, as it happens. I grew up in Roosevelt: the “Hempstead” reference is me referring to the Town of Hempstead, of which Roosevelt’s a part. (The Zip Code mentioned in SYWTBAW is a bit of a giveaway.)
Spider’s an old friend, but I have no control over him leaving his things lying around on my fictive territory. As long as he doesn’t make a mess, though, he’s most welcome. :)
(note to @droewyn: If you want to post a link to that fic in a way that I won't see, go right ahead while adding the tag #notyoudd, which the Young Wizards fans kindly use to make sure I don't see anything that would be Not Good For Me To See. Tx!)

Did u ever saw Mary when she was alive? What was the 1st meeting like after her death?
Thank you for the question. ❤️
Ah, Mary. No, I don’t believe I saw her until she was bought to my estate for her trial. Then, of course her death. Though she claimed she did not leave her town of birth, round Hemel Hempstead where we are, I was a little all over the place those few years. I say, I didn’t see her again as an adult that I can remember. So maybe I did but didn’t cotton onto it. Likely not though, I never got the chance to see her grow up. Perhaps I saw her as a child though when she was brought up to my house, I do believe I knew her parents well. They tolled my land, and I paid for the upkeep of their home, as it were.

14 June 2023
New Towns Bedford 14 June 2023
After the Second World War, a plan was devised by the British Government to relocate bombed-out people and the ‘overfill’ from the cities into new population centres - ‘new towns.’ Thus were born the likes of Stevenage, Hemel Hempstead, Bracknell, Warrington and the snappily named Central Lancashire New Town (which I believe is just greater Preston.) The idea was that they were going to be modern cities for a modern country, designed with the very best of 20th century town planning in mind.
What this basically meant was that there would be concrete, there would be low density housing, there would be grids, and by gum there would be roundabouts.
Milton Keynes is one such new town, incorporated in 1967. I rag on Milton Keynes a lot, but it’s honestly it is one of the more unsettling places I have ever visited. I’ve seen retail (including the shopping centre), parking lots, offices, parking lots, plazas and parking lots, and I’ve seen a great many people, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a house in Milton Keynes. It doesn’t feel like a place where people live. And there’s definitely trees and greenery, but it feels very manmade. It’s a huge contrast to the countryside one sees between Bedford and Milton Keynes - like a lawn of fake grass on one side of the road and a forest on the other.
It’s got a great Waterstones though, so obviously it’s not Britain’s worst township. That honour goes to Royal Tunbridge Wells.
In any case, we pretty much only went to Milton Keynes to shop. I bought a book and a funko pop. Life is good.

Cedarmere
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It feels wrong to gatekeep this just because it's MY FAVORITE PLACE ON EARTH and I don't want people going there and messing it up or seeing me weep over its immense beauty and magic.
Okay, I'm being a little dramatic here but truly, Cedarmere IS my favorite place on earth and it IS filled with beauty and magic.
LET'S START WITH THE BASICS AS USUAL BEFORE I START WAXING POETIC ABOUT A PARK ON LONG ISLAND:
💰: FREE
⏰: the PARK is open from dusk until dawn, 365 days (as of now, due to Covid, the mansion remains closed unless specified on the website)
📍: 225 Bryant Ave., Roslyn Harbor, Long Island, NY
♿️: there IS handicapped parking, but this place doesn't have paved paths, so do with that handicapped parking what you will
🏃‍♀️: beginner intensity, this isn't so much about the hikes as it is the "vibes" and the strolls
🐶: as far as I'm aware, pets are not explicitly forbidden
🚗: two parking lots, the lower lot around the curve is my preferred
📸: moderate "Instagramability",
William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878) was a prolific poet, an abolitionist, an outspoken activist for worker's rights, the long time editor of The New York Evening Post, and was the main tenet of Cedarmere. (He's also a huge reason we have Central Park and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, so big ups to WCB for all he did for New York back in the day).
Bryant created an oasis on the North Shore of Long Island that I don't even remember finding for the first time anymore but I knew that when I did.. this was something special. It's a very small estate and only has some small hills and short paths around the mansion and pond and down to the boathouse. Cedarmere, again, isn't about "the hike"; it's solely about the feeling.. the magic.. the serenity.. the beauty.. the intentionality of each piece of the estate.
This place was made with care and love and it shows.
Tumblr media
Cedarmere is maybe a weird first suggestion of places on Long Island to visit for a "hike" or an "adventure", especially since it's small and unknown and the Nassau County Museum of Art is just up the hill (on former Bryant property as well). I think off the beaten path, the unknown and unexpected, yet completely remarkable are worth all the time in the world and the best places to seek out.
TRAIL SUGGESTION:
I don't really have a "trail suggestion" because there really is only so much of this park to explore. It is very small and I think the only technical trail is around the large pond pictured below.
Cedarmere doesn't have the trails or breadth of space, but it does have features. It has a definitely peacefully haunted house, a beautifully restored boathouse, a serene, murky and gentle pond, a stone bridge, strategic lookout points for glorious sunset views of Hempstead Harbor, an overgrown reflecting pool leading to a dilapidated fountain that fills with tulip tree petals and radiates pink in the spring, and a boxwood maze that surrounds the most beautiful magnolia tree you've ever seen in your life. Pictures and words are not enough, this place is spectacularly beautiful in the Spring especially but really, always.
Cedarmere brings me peace just explaining it to you. It is a place that makes you exhale and feel safe and still.
Tumblr media
DRIVING ROUTE:
This will probably be the first and last time I give a suggestion of HOW to drive to a particular park. This may sound bizarre but just hear me out, Roslyn is a phenomenally old little town that is just steeped in American history and it is deeply picturesque.
My preferred route for the full effect:
If you're driving up from the southern parts of Long Island, I recommend the scenic route of Roslyn Road going North (which will turn into Main Street once you cross into Roslyn). Some of the oldest structures and houses in Nassau County live on this street and are treated with such care by their current residents. You can always stop in on Gerry Park to your right, but that's just a lovely little unnecessary stop if you ask me. Once you hit the Clocktower, which you truly can't miss, the road forks and you want to stay to the right and drive through town, a whopping two blocks? and you will hit another fork in the road. This time, you want to turn LEFT onto Bryant Avenue (does it feel like you're getting close? You are!). You will pass Diane's Bakery on your left before you go under the viaduct, and if you're looking for a little something to eat before heading to Cedarmere or after leaving there, I do recommend stopping by this long-time Rosyln staple. Once you pass under the viaduct, you should soon see a white house on the curve of the road and maybe even a gravel-filled parking lot (this is where you will pull in for the handicapped parking). I NEVER park in the first gravel parking lot, personally, I ALWAYS round the bend and park behind the house around the curve on the left side of the road.
The website has more directions but that's certainly my route of choice, and yes, I have been here enough times that I have a literal way I prefer to get there.
I've been known to haunt this place regardless of the time of year or time of day. It is most special in Spring though I think (although that's probably my opinion on everywhere as I really love flowers...).
Cedarmere is magic.
Go and experience it as quickly as humanly possible.
This is like #1 on my "Run, Don't Walk" list of places to go.

A STRAIGHT SHOOTER / A HOLY TERROR
1925
Tumblr media
A Straight Shooter (later re-titled A Holy Terror) is a three-act play by George Abbott and Winchell Smith. It was originally produced by John Golden, staged by Mr. Smith, starring Helen Gahagan and Mr. Abbott.
The play takes place in a small coal mining town in West Virginia.
Dirk Yancey comes to town and is made chief of police, despite his record as a convicted killer. A coal miner’s strike is on and his first duty is to disarm the feuding Yancey and Chapman clans. He feels the hillmen should be peaceful and present a united front if they are to get their just dues from the mine owners. Soon afterward, Mayor Goodlow, who married Dirk's sweetheart, is killed in a gun fight with a detective. Then the militia is called in. The strike is soon settled, due to Dirk's quick trigger finger and everything promises to be peaceful and serene. But the villain must have his last-act fling so Dirk is accused of the Mayor’s murder before the happy ending.
The play premiered in Elmira NY at the Lyceum Theatre on May 21, 1925. It then moved south to Atlantic City NJ.
Tumblr media
A Straight Shooter opened at Nixon’s Apollo Theatre on the Boardwalk on May 25, 1925. After the AC engagement, the play changed its title to A Holy Terror. After a short break, it resumed performances in New York state with bookings in Patchogue, Hempstead, Great Neck, and Rochester.  It also played a week in Baltimore.
Tumblr media
“’A Holy Terror’ is not so much of a play in itself as it is a burlesque of a play.” ~ BALTIMORE SUN
Just before Broadway, the play lodged in Hartford and Bridgeport CT.
Tumblr media
The play opened on Broadway on September 28, 1925 at George M. Cohan’s Theatre (1482 Broadway at West 43rd Street). The venue opened in 1911 and was razed in 1938. The female lead, formerly played by Helen Gahagan, was recast with Leona Hogarth on the road to Broadway.
Tumblr media
Despite not being part of the Broadway company of the play, Gahagan’s career did not suffer. Born in Boonton NJ in 1900, she began appearing on Broadway at age 21 and stayed for three decades, including the original production of The Enchanted April, which was why she left the cast of A Holy Terror. In 1931 she married actor Melvyn Douglas. In 1950, Gahagan lost a bid for Senator of California to Richard Nixon. She is grandmother to Illeana Douglas.
Tumblr media
"’A Holy Terror’ brings the theatre back to where Mr. Golden's public believes it belongs. They are pretty sure to like it, and there are a lot of them.”
The play closed after 32 performances. Producer Golden talked about it to columnist Carlton Miles:
“Managers don’t know everything, otherwise ’A Holy Terror’, which I thought a good play, wouldn't be closing Saturday.” Four weeks settled the fate of the first Golden production of the season, a play of the mountains written by George Abbott the actor, and revised by Winchell Smith. On his desk was another manuscript. “Managers never stop. I'm going to work on this one as soon as possible. I think it is a fine play. Winchell Smith has just read it and has brought it in today saying ‘That play doesn't need five lines changed.’ We shall see!”
Tumblr media
In 1927, a film adaptation was released titled Hills of Peril. It starred Buck Jones as Laramie, the character formerly named Yancey.  The screenplay, by Jack Jungmeyer, changed the characters from coal miners to cowboys.
Tumblr media
The film opened in Atlantic City at City Square Theatre on Atlantic Avenue on June 11, 1927.
[Note: A 1931 film titled A Holy Terror staring Humphrey Bogart is not related to the play, but was based on a novel by Max Brand.]
Tumblr media
George Abbott's career in the theatre spanned eight decades. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1960, numerous Tony Awards, and The Kennedy Centre Honors in 1982. He died at the age of 107.

Body Shop to shut 75 stores and cut hundreds of jobs

BBC News
The Body Shop will close 75 shops in the UK over the coming weeks and cut 489 jobs, according to the firm overseeing its restructuring.
It means that, combined with cost-cutting at the company’s head office, between 750 and 800 people will be made redundant.
However, The Body Shop will keep 116 UK stores open.
The UK arm of the global beauty chain was put into administration earlier this month.
Shops will be closed over the next four to six weeks. FRP Advisory, which is managing the restructuring, said it would “support all impacted staff with claims to the Redundancy Payments Service”.
“In taking swift action to right-size The Body Shop UK store portfolio, we have stabilised the business,” said FRP Advisory’s Tony Wright.
“We remain fully focused on exploring all options to take the business forward.”
The Body Shop was a trailblazer – what went wrong?
The Body Shop was founded in Brighton in 1976 by the late Dame Anita Roddick who opened a single shop in the seaside town. Known for its natural beauty products and its stance against testing on animals, it expanded rapidly in the following years.
Dame Anita and her husband Gordon sold the business to French beauty giant L’Oreal in 2006, much to the chagrin of some loyal followers who viewed the French beauty giant’s business at odds with The Body Shop’s ethos.
Since then, The Body Shop has changed hands twice, most recently to private equity firm Aurelius in late 2023. Within weeks, it decided to place the UK arm in administration following poor sales over Christmas and January.
Wildly popular in the 1980s and 1990s, The Body Shop appeared to fall out of fashion as competitors arrived in the natural beauty market including Lush and Rituals.

NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2024
Hello all,
Hope all is well with everyone, despite all the nasty illnesses going round, that I had a piece of too. It's been a little while since the last newsletter, here in brief is the latest news and details of some forthcoming shows.
AWARD NOMINATION
For the fourth year running, I've been nominated in the UK Blues Awards, this time in the new category of Traditional Blues Artist of the Year. It would be great if you could spare the time to vote for me, it doesn't take long. For your vote to count, you have to vote in at least 5 categories. I'm aware that many people who like and follow what I do may not be hugely knowledgeable of the UK Blues world, so by way of help with that I can point out festivals I've played (Swanage and Upton), venues I've done gigs at (100 Club Tuesday Blues, Tuesday Night Music Club, Temperance), shows I've been on (Cerys Matthews, Gary Grainger, Richard Dunning, Paul Long), and artists I know personally (Acoustic, Trevor Steger). It would be great to get enough votes so please do also share this link for voting with anyone you know who might also vote (voting closes on Sunday 25th February):
voting UK Blues Awards
NEW ALBUM
Called Fools & Clowns, this will be out pretty soon, the last of the behind the scenes preparation is currently going on. It'll be available for pre-order before long, and at gigs too.
We're really pleased with it, and it's a bit of a departure from what we've done before, building on our style to produce a slightly different set of sounds. The songs are all newly written originals, with a range of subject matter that you don't normally come across in songs (as usual). It's unmistakeably us, and hopefully it'll have you smiling, thinking and dancing! More information soon, including ordering link.
Tumblr media
DATES
Lots of shows in great venues coming up. We're out there doing something new and original, with recognisable elements of the classic music of the past. If you loved the great artists of the golden period decades ago, you'll like what we do too and recognise it as something that may well have fitted in well back then. And it really is new, with songs about life as people live it today, and stories you won't have heard before, all delivered with totally individual musicianship. Do come to shows and do spread the word to anyone you feel will like what we do.

At Ebooks Direct for Christmas...
Tumblr media
JD 2455550.52 / December 20th, 2010:
It’s five days till Christmas, and the day before the Winter Solstice. The biggest pre-Christmas blizzard seen for decades is heading straight for the New York metropolitan area. But in one small corner of the Town of Hempstead on Long Island, everyone’s attention is on other business. That’s because there’s a party tonight at Juan and Marina Rodriguez’s house… and the guest of honor is a being from four hundred light years away who looks a whole lot like a Christmas tree.
How Lovely Are Thy Branches, a 35,000 word novelette, is a canonical work in the Young Wizards universe and takes place between the events of A Wizard of Mars and Games Wizards Play.
How Lovely Are Thy Branches is available as a standalone ebook at Ebooks Direct, in device-specific formats tailored for the Kindle, Nook and Kobo, for iBooks/Apple Books, and in a generic epub version. It also appears in the Amazon paperback and Kindle ebook versions of Interim Errantry.
CAUTION: contains alcohol, vintage and theoretically toxic Christmas tree lights, an epic binge-viewing sleepover, wizardly saurians who’ve shown up so they won’t miss spinning the dreidel... and just a small alien invasion.
Grab your copy now before Kit’s and Carmela’s mom’s cocoa runs out...!
