Red Dots or Irons on your pistol?
Tumblr media
For as long as the handgun has been in existence, there have been some sort of sighting system in place to help the shooter to get their projectiles on their target. An aiming system, although crude. Typically there’s a front sight post and a rear sight post. You line them up at your target and fire. Iron sights themselves have had some improvements however. There’s some pistols with adjustable rear sights, some with just elevation, some with both elevation and windage. The sights themselves can be all black, a front bead type sights, fiber optic sights and of course the infamous tritium night sights. The latter version of iron sight do roughly the same thing and that is draw the shooter’s eyes to the sight quicker. In the past decade or so an even more modern pistol sighting system has become commonplace and that is the pistol red dot.
Tumblr media
The pistol red dot was probably pioneered exclusively by the folks over at Trijicon with their RMR red dot. I have 1 Trijicon RMR on one of my Polymer80 Brownells exclusive builds from years back. The Trijicon RMR pretty much has set the standard for both the ruggedness of a pistol red dot as well as the mounting system used. Many other competitive optics from manufacturers such as Holosun also use the Trijicon RMR footprint. The idea behind the red dot sighting system is that instead of having a front and rear iron sight to line up with your target, you now have a single dot or reticle to aim with. The red dot can enhance the quickness of bringing your pistol up to your eyes and acquiring the target in order to place your shot. Many people in the competition shooting community use pistol red dots exclusively because of the fact that it speeds up your shots.
Tumblr media
So when should you use a red dot instead of plane old iron sights or vice versa? Well that depends upon a number of different variables. The shooter’s eyesight can be one important factor to consider when deciding. For me, I have difficult time seeing red dots clearly due to having a bad astigmatism in both of my eyes. The majority of red dots look fuzzy to me. Another factor to consider is the use case of the handgun. If the primary focus is for a defensive use, I always recommend having a red dot system that still allows for the use of irons sights as a backup. Often times you must use taller front and rear sights in this case. If the primary use is competition, then it may not matter quite as much. The overall bulkiness of the pistol with the red dot may also be a consideration for some folks as well as holster compatibility.
Tumblr media
It is of course up to the individual to decide in which sights work best for him or her. Brownells has the entire line up of both iron sights as well as red dots for pistol use. There are budget iron sights as well as more premium lines and the same is true for pistol red dot sights. Regardless of the sighting system you choose, be sure to train and practice often in order to get proficient, especially if being used for defense.

Modernized XM9: A Metal Gear Solid 2 thought project
Tumblr media
This portrayal of the XM9 is now 21 years old, how would we modernize it for use in 2023 and beyond? Let's start with the base gun. The original is a Beretta M9 with an added on manual lock-up from Knight's Armanent Company.
Tumblr media
I honestly think with modern suppressors, and ammunition, we can forgo the manual slide lock solution, even tho the Hush Puppy Project exists and they do slide lock conversions for Glocks and M&P slides. Then we can move to an off-the-shelf solution for a pistol; For the proper modernization but keeping the style, I'd look at the Beretta pistols as modified Ernest Langdon at Langdon Tactical Technologies
Tumblr media
These particular variants offer the lowest possible mounting of the red dot sight we'll be adding. And comes with suppressor height sights as standard that will allow co-witness through the red dot in the miraculous case that your 2 year battery life unexpectedly craps out on you. For the red dot sight, a Trijicon RMR seems like the go-to option. It is the option that all other optics are measured against.
Tumblr media
For in-game purposes this would make aiming easier in first person perspective for newer players as no knowledge of how regular iron sights work would be needed. Just a red dot would be needed. For regular third person view, that's where the Surefire x400v comes into play. It is the venerable Surefire x300, the go-to pistol light, but in IR, and with IR laser capabilities. This allows for even more use of the infrared goggles you can find in-game.
Tumblr media
The Beretta pistol makes for an interesting host for pistol suppressors. Due to the movement of the barrel during firing, there is less or no need for a booster or Nielsen Device, allowing you to have a lighter suppressor. And for the kind of use this is intended for, less weight is really important. This also allows for a suppressor that isn't as specialized as the can used on the original XM9, this would allow for the same suppressor to potentially be used on whatever 9mm carbines or SMGs that could appear in the game.
Close to my idea, as built by user Greg Bell on Pistol-Forum.com
Tumblr media
So yeah, that's my thoughts on how to reimagine what I think is a pretty iconic gun for the Metal Gear franchise.

My go-to optics @holosunoptics HS507C X2, @vortexoptics VENOM, @trijicon RMR. Extremely reliable for it’s mid-range price. I’ve been using my venom for over a decade and it has never failed me yet. RMR is my most rugged and my preferred optic for my carry. My Suns are relatively new, only been playing with it for a year, it’s my least compact optic but it’s fail safe solar strip makes it ideal for training and competition… #vortexvenom #holosun507c #trijiconrmr #cao82 #mandirigmatactical #restore2aca #restore2a #pewpew #pewpewlife #wethepeople #shallnotbeinfringed #tactical #pistol #shooting #rifle #weapons #weaponsdaily #edc #gun #firearm #freedom (at United States) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClZ0xAuv-3A/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

So time for a random thought i had the other day. funny enough this thought was the spawn of a meme i seen a few days earlier of girls during fall and boys during fall. Today is a quick post showing how my edc changes with the seasons. Its something ive been doing subconsciously for years now.
What i mean by this is big edc pistols in the winter and smaller pistols during the warmer months. if you do this as well leave a comment that way i know im not as weird as i think i am lol.
Lets start with summer and the warmer months, for a few years my go to concealed pistol choice for this has been a gen5 glock 19. I find that the glock 19 has the perfect grip length for me to concealed in t-shirts and shorts type of clothing. I often change my carry position between the appendix and the 3 o'clock depending on what I am doing. I have never been to picky about holsters. I know now days with the amount of different kydex holster companies out there everyone has their preffered clips and wings and whatever else they can market. personally I dont really care if my holster has one of the wing bar deals on it and as for the belt clips, the generic wide paddle style clip that used to come on every holster is just fine with me. Also dont forget it never hurts to throw a extra mag of your favorite carry ammo in your pocket too.
Tumblr media
I recently picked up a Glock 43x and a Safariland schema holster and have been really digging this setup. This will for sure be next years summer carry. At the time of writing this i have carried the 43x for the last few weeks and it is literally a ed setup that you dont even realize you are wearing. Plus when i seen this Safariland holster had just released i thought it was super cool and had to get one.
Tumblr media
Now on to my favorite Fall/ Winter ed pistol setup. The Glock 45 is my go to for this task. It doesnt have to be a G45 either, since the G45 is a full size 17 grip length this would work with all of the full size glocks and still have pretty much the same outcome. My current G45 seup consists of a Trijicon type 2 rmr with a 3.25 moa red dot, a Streamlight tIr7a and some Ameriglo suppresor height iron sights all from the awesome people over at Brownells. Also i cant forget to mention the DNC Ranger Wraps on the rmr and tIr7a. When i had the slide cut for the rmr a few years back i had the slide cerakoted noveske bazooka green as well which has become my absolute favorite cerakote color. Just like before the holsters dont really matter to me. The one that has been my go to is a od green hilliker holster company rig and it has been just fine for me. Same thing applies as before, throw a extra mag of your carry ammo in your pocket and call it good.
Tumblr media
I am genuinely curious to hear if anyone else does this sort of thing throughout the year as well. Let me know what your go to edc pistol is as well. If you somehow are reading this thank you for checking it out. Go check out my socials where i post alot more interesting things than this lol.
Happy shooting!
