On the topic of Flynn and Silver, I've found multiple of his answers to be almost infantilizing of Silver's character. Stuff like him being irresponsible with his powers and needing Whisper to keep an eye on him, his favourite food being mac and cheese (often considered a childish and easy-to-make dish, also lols there because Silver's been shown with apples at least half a dozen times), him getting all Goofy Silly Stuttering Awkward about being considered famous, and I also read something about him missing Amy's birthday party because he got the date wrong... Blegh. The fact that none of these are ever shown in any media that takes the franchise seriously aside, it's so incessantly bothersome to me how much of an idiot baby he makes Silver into. And "fans" just eat it up and coo over how ✨siwwee✨ little asthma-riddled asphalt-eating Silver with no social skills and who would keel over and die if he had to take two steps by himself is. (These are all claims I regularly see floating by, with, again, just about a negative basis in canon, lol.)
I truly cannot get my head around how people claim they like and respect a character, only for the version they have created in their minds to be a caricature/spit in the face of said character at best. Statements like "My interpretation of the character is not the correct one!! :)" can only get you so far if your interpretation features solely the outer shell of the character in question, in my honest opinion. And Flynn and his Bumblekast honestly seem to only be making the problem actively worse.
GOD YES.
But lets not act that it's purely Flynn who keeps fucking up the character. Stanley has a big hand in it too. Not surprising for someone who literally made art of him walking into a Lush then walking out spitting bubbles after eating the soaps in there :| Like, how do you view art of Silver using his PSI in a precise manner to deftly move packages (Assuming THEY EVEN VIEWED IT.)...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then morph him into being such a fucking amateur that he gets smothered by tools that he isn't shown to have the smallest control over?
Tumblr media
But lets not stop there in regards to the utter fail of a portrayal.
Compare Forces. In which Chad Silver went toe-to-toe with the monster that was dreaded by the Resistance because he turned the war in Dr Eggman's favour and singlehandedly killed multiple resistance fighters (The fact he lost isn't the point - Sonic did too. And he still held his own for an admirable amount of time against this supowered bully.);
Tumblr media
...To this Virgin mockery that was imperiled by a fucking EGG PAWN (And had to have a canon foreigner save his ass. Whom I'll add he fangirled over.);
Tumblr media
I'm not even a huge fan of Silver (Though he is in my top 25 characters.) and even I call bull on this slander. Fans rightly criticise IDW!Sonic all the time as the complete mangling of Sonic as a character that it is. But the consistently off-model, adaptational dumbass weakling that poor Silver was morphed into is arguably just as bad.

I think I know the problem with modern sonic.
It's because the kids that grew up loving Sonic, are finally old enough to work on it.
And you should never hire fans to work on something.
I don't think the action of hiring fans in itself is the problem. The problem is hiring fans who don't know what they're doing (Encyclospeedia and its 50+ amateur mistakes comes to mind.), bring their own biases and questionable ideas on what characters are thus mangling them (Hi IDW!Sonic the sanctimonious asshole and IDW!Silver the off-model cutesy smol cinnamon roll.) and who exhibit unprofessional behaviour (Flynn throwing SEGA under the bus repeatedly, Yardley defacing Uekawa's Shadow artwork etc.)
Fans have brought greatness to Sonic. Such as Tyson Hesse and he guys who created Mania. Thing is though, they are thoroughly qualified for the work that they do and have the right attitudes. So what they produce is very competent and from what I've seen, they've only harboured appreciation for SEGA unlike a certain comic team who aren't on both counts. What SEGA need to do when scoping the fandom for talent is to have higher standards. Not hire based on undeserved and whatsmore irrelevant popularity.

Come to think of it, Sonic is kinda like Luffy since they don’t take orders. If anything if Sally makes a plan Sonic would definitely improvise and go his own way. Which would be hilarious to see.
I'd love to see a piece of fanart wherein Sally steps in out of nowhere and orders Game!Sonic around only for him to furrow his eye ridge at her and ask "Uh, who are you lol?"

Have you seen the new Sonic Channel art? The one where Sonic and Tails are playing with water guns in celebration of a festival in Thailand? (Also, apparently more Tails concept art got dropped.)

Hi!! May I ask how you characterize Sonic? :o
Optimistic.
Compassionate.
Is unfettered and lighthearted most of the time but this does a complete 180 when he is focused on a task and he becomes focused and more serious.
Short-tempered and impatient.
Impulsive
Can be utterly merciless to villains who give no indication of redemption. Not against taking potentially lethal actions against them.
Doesn't harbor bullshit hooky "ideology" regarding what he does *Glares nastily at IDW*
Doesn't abide by any "Heroic code", does what he does because he wants to, not because it's "heroic".
Doesn't dwell on the past.
Dislikes those who are all talk.
Not traitorous.

What in canon then is the explanation for why he hasn’t killed Eggman or let him die
Sonic HAS let him die. Multiple times. A lot of the actions he's taken against him have been potentially lethal and Sonic harbors such intense hatred towards the doctor that he only very grudgingly rescued a guy who just so happened to look like him and nothing else (SatSR.) I've said it before; Eggy only lives because he has contractual immunity as the franchise's main villain.

Hmm, remember that art where Sonic and Tails were in a water fight as ode to a Thailand festival? It seems like they did another for that "traveling through Asia" series: Sonic, Tails and Knuckles in a dragon boat race for the Chinese New Year. The boat being an Unleashed reference. (Found on Sega's Korean account)

I absolutely adore your analysis on Sonic’s character and what his personality and attitude should be/is. Your posts are so put together and intelligent! If you haven’t already, could you do one on Shadow’s character? Before the 2010s ofc lol
Thank you! Getting asks like this brighten up my day :>
A general run-over of what constitutes a good Shadow portrayal to me is...
Quiet. Taciturn. And when he does speak, he's terse, gets to the point and is not verbose.
Can be introspective. Such as contemplating his purpose and the nature of those he meets i.e Mephiles.
Is a misanthrope i.e Hates all of humanity. But is willing to work past his prejudice in order to defend humanity in honor of Maria's wish.
Determines his own path and will not allow others to influence him from it especially if it's for the sake of manipulating him and getting him on their side.
Very serious. Not really a jesting sort of person and is not jovial like Sonic is.
Looks down on weakness.
Is capable of sympathy (Such as towards Emerl regarding being troubled about his nature as a weapon.), gratitude and concern for others such as Sonic and Rouge.
Does not dwell in the past any more. Has moved on. Doesn't mean that the ARK tragedy no longer influences his personality and outlook though since he does have PTSD nonetheless.
Takes great pride in his status as the ULF.
Is afraid of his own power.
I think I got the most important traits. If I think of more, I'll reblog this post and add them.

Ian Flynn when asked about the point of the Mr. Needlemouse subplot was: Well it was just to bookend Tinker and sorry if you expected more from it. :/ Ian Flynn when how he handled Tinker or any other supposed 'morality' plot is handled poorly by him: Well it's just a kid's comic, go read more adult material if you don't like how I do it! :/ Nobody tell him there's been TONS of kid's media that handled heavy subject matter with tact or how he's actually insulting kids as an audience.
Rule 101 of introducing moral quandaries in a work - If you can't be arsed to explore it properly because you lay back on the lame-ass excuse that the prime target audience is children (Which disrespects them in the process I may add.) despite the fact that Sonic is for everyone, you're a hack. Nothing less.

Game Eggman: Shows up in person with a huge wrecking ball at the end of the first fucking level(Green Hill Zone) in the first game, ready to destroy Sonic.
SatAM!Robotnik: Sits on his fat ass safely at HQ stroking a chicken for pretty much entire show. Has his nephew do the lion's share of the brainwork in attacking the freedom fighters(who are a bunch of hippies living in the woods).
That's one of the many, many things I love about Eggy - He's proactive. The majority of the time, he'll go toe to toe with his arch nemesis personally. Not forgetting how IDW turned him into a giant pussy against Knuckles even with the Egg Mobile's windshield UP;
Tumblr media
when Sonic Team portrayed him facing off against fucking SUPER SONIC fearlessly windshield DOWN;
Tumblr media
Western interpretations are always fucking him up.

Probs a very unpopular opinion, but i don't really want keanu to voice shadow. man's too old to convincingly voice a character meant to be 15, though i suppose that's a common problem amongst sonic voice actors. Also think that as much as i love keanu reeves in live action films, the guy isn't a great voice actor. He sounded very flat throughout most of cyberpunk 2077 in my humble opinion. Not that this will impact my hype for the film lol, hell they could reveal frigging danny devitos voicing shadow and i'd still be hyped xD "Shadow what the hell you doin man?" "it's my character sonic, im the trash man!"
I'm rather excited personally. And I'm all for a guy whom I've heard nohing but good things about regarding his generosity and general niceness getting another role. Also, perhaps this casting will draw even more people to the film and give it even more box office success.

I can understand giving a character some type of guidance figure, but not done in such a way that it's a disrespect to the character. Or they're SO hapless on their own they need hand-holding. "Mentor and student" is not the same as "a boss and their minions". One is guiding the other, the other is ordering the rest around.
The belief that Silver, one of the most powerful characters in the setting, needs to be fucking babysat by an OC is absolutely ludicrous.

In regards to Erazors backstory, it's implied that he was evil beforehand and was trapped as a wish slave BECAUSE he was a cunt.
One of the numerous things I like about SatSR's story is that whilst Erazor does have a backstory that can be seen as tragic, it still doesn't use it to justify his actions. He was always a douchenozzle. It was his own actions that condemned him to servitude. And even after he was dealt with, he was STILL unrepentant and defiant. Guy is heavily implied to be a domestic abuser too. And Sonic wasn't going to stand back and give him he opportunity to harm Shahra again, not to mention the world of the book.

Unpopular opinion: I never liked Yardley's art style, I thought it's too ugly and hard to take seriously.
I don't think that Yardley is anywhere near on the same level as the likes of Penders but he's definitely the weakest IDW artist IMO. Has a penchant for sameface and grotesque expressions and still can't draw Shadow and Silver on-model. Also, his go-to expression is bedroom eyes;
