The truth about Yokohama Design Gakuin
After living in Japan for almost a full year, I must advise you to stay clear of the school advertised by the questionable service called "gogonihon", called "Yokohama Design Gakuin" or YDC for short. It was a huge waste of time, money and mental health. I suggest for you to ask to real students studying in Japan about good language schools. That is all which I will say for now. I am still looking around to see if Tumblr is a good blogging platform to share my art and thoughts with other people, as I am already fed up with things such as Facebook and instagram.

███████████████████████████████████
Yohji Yamamoto at Paris Fashion Week
████████████ DESIGNER
Yamamoto was born in 1943 in Yokohama, Japan. He studied English at the Nipppon University. Subsquently, he graduated from Keio University, in 1966. He then attended Bunka Fukuso Gakuin, the Japanese College of Fashion, for 2 years till 1968. Here he studied under Chie Kolke, who attended Paris’ l’Ecole with Yves St. Laurent.
He started out making clothes for his mother’s friends in their Tokyo neighbourhood in the late 60’s. Before Yamamooto, dressmakers were tradesmen to be treated as humble people. Not him. He had taken an extended tour of Europe, including a stay in Paris and he felt that designing clothes was as creative as painting.
After working as a freelance designer for 4 years, Yamamoto formed his own company in 1972 and showed his first collection in Japan in 1976. The presentation of his shows made him famous, dramatic clothes were shown in an exciting environment. By blending the vigorous, exotic and powerful designs of traditional Japanese dress with Western daywear, he achieves a unique, abstract style.
In the early 1970’s, Yohji Yamamoto created Y’s, his first line. The first show ran in Tokyo, 1977. In 1981, Yohji Yamamoto presented his first Yohji Yamamoto collection in Paris and in 1984, he followed with his first Yohji Yamamoto pour Homme collection.
In 1999, his final wedding dress was topped by a hat so big that 4 men were required with long poles to hold it upright. In Fall 2000, he had a one-season sneaker deal with Adidas. Yohji has entered into a collaboration with Sports Shoe maker Adidas and in October 2002, he brought out the first collection under the new name.
From April till August 2005, an exhibition of Yohji’s work is being held at the Pitti Palace’s Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Florence, Italy. The exhibition will move on to Paris, to the Musee de la Mode et du Textile, in the Autumn.

A DIT (Do-It-Together) Renovation in Hayama, Japan
Last year, architects Takuya Tsuchida and Makiko Okano of the Yokohama-based firm No. 555 renovated a humble apartment in the coastal city of Hayama, Japan, by moving in for the summer and renovating it bit by bit. The architects enlisted the No. 555 design team and students from the Kanto Gakuin University to help with the painting and plasterwork (stucco finished with a coating of lye), and treated the polished concrete floors like a Jackson Pollock painting. Here’s a look at the project from finish to start (scroll down).
Photography by Masatoshi Mori, courtesy of No. 555.
Above: The living room is outfitted with midcentury modern and traditional Japanese antiques. A grouping of potted plants and hanging Staghorn fern bring life into the small space. For similar furniture from Beijing-based Lost & Found, see our post Communist Era–Inspired Furniture in Beijing.
Above: The concrete floor with splatter paint detail.
Above: The dining room is kitted with a custom wood table in the same style as the kitchen counters and French brasserie rattan chairs (you can source them at American Country or Williams Sonoma).
Above L: No. 555 designed the open kitchen with a series of unfinished wood countertops finished with eco-friendly oil from Osmo. Above the kitchen island in the foreground is a custom hanging wine rack suspended from steel wire. Above R: The entryway to the apartment with shelves for storing house shoes.
