Thoughts on the Chai's, please!

"At first? I thought they were both just a waste of space like the rest of that damn city. But over time they really proved themselves to be capable leaders, and it all worked out.

My brain went "no thoughts, head empty" for like an hour after I saw this ask come through. Besany is not particularly fond of her time on the First for a multitude of reasons, but she appreciates the supportive locals like the Chais since they did help keep her family safe with their efforts.

So I have a couple different places where this is scattered forgive me, I've been meaning to rework his lore on AO3 to update/revamp the og stuff I have written and add the things I've written here on tumblr ask responses to ask memes

Right now the main places you can find his journey are here on AO3, these are majority things I wrote while in the midst of gameplay so they're incomplete and in need of some reworking but they do exist:

A Realm Reborn Heavensward Stormblood (this one admittedly is just a single chapter of smut at the moment, I didn't write much when I played through Stormblood) Shadowbringers (bonus: Shadowbringers Bad Ending AU)

(I haven't rewritten any of my Endwalker stuff yet but I'll post that too I swear)

Also fair warning, the AO3 stuff is locked for users only because I don't want AI scraping it. But I'll gladly rework and post those to tumblr too tbh.

hello, and happy chinese new year! thanks for the question!! i actually don’t exactly know which ask meme you’re referring to (i reblog a lot of ask memes don’t i???) so i’m assuming its for the latest one here because it’s the latest post i have with the title as ‘writer ask meme’? (please let me know if i got it wrong!)10. Pick an author (or writing friend) to co-write a book with 

 this is already difficult!! i actually still don’t know enough about the writing styles of the writers here, and i don’t have any writing friends in real life (okay... maybe i have like, one, but she does poetry and journalism and i don’t... but her writing is beautiful) so i really don’t know yet!! does anyone want to co-write a book with me ?? HAHA. for an author... hm............. rick riordan. i think our humour coincides sometimes, and we can bounce off stupid jokes on one another. i love cold humour and lame puns. also, i love greek mythology.20. Any advice for young writers/advice you wish someone would have given you early on? 

 i think i’ve been really lucky in that everyone has been really encouraging so far. i mean, my friends and family know that i like to write and they always encourage me to, though they have never read my stuff before so maybe that’s only because they don’t know my capability (or lack thereof)... so the issues i’ve ever had was only with myself. i guess my advice would be like, remember that one tiny idea / concept that you had since young??? well, sometimes it manifests into an actual novel in adulthood, things come around, so you know, don’t ever fully give up on your ideas!!!when i was younger, i had a vague idea about writing something in the afterlife, but it never worked out. it’s very different from my current wip in that it’s a full-fledged fantasy that was meant to be epic with things like the worlds colliding and a powerful core and multiple realms and things like that, but that i never finished / started it and maybe it was never meant to be like that, because suddenly in my adulthood i’ve found another idea in the afterlife and it isn’t even close to what i originally had in mind, but i still love it, and maybe this is what it’s all meant to become since then. who knows? is this even advice????? i think it’s just mindless introspection. but yea, i guess that’s all i’ve got.30. Do you like to read books similar to your project while you’re drafting or do you stick to non-fiction/un-similar works? 

i try not to read anything while i’m writing my own work (also, i haven’t read a book in... ages), so definitely that means nothing similar to my project as well! there’s always that inherent fear or accidentally taking someone else’s ideas and internalising it as your own, and while there are obviously tropes and concepts and intangible things that can always be found in similar books, it’s a fine line between that, and accidentally plagiarising something, so yea, i don’t want to fall into that trap of getting inspired by a similar story while writing my own. it might get a little complicated.

40. Do you look up to any of your writer buddies?

like i said, i don’t really know a lot of your writing styles yet, but i definitely look up to the writeblrs out here!!! there are so many writers with such strong, complex, intricate worldbuilding that i can’t ever imagine doing , people who have such strong interesting character and character relationships, and people with such amazing, crazy plots that i’m honestly so excited about, and of course, all of the great people here who are so welcoming and friendly and ahhhh, it’s a great community. i think everyone here is brilliant tbh, and there’s way too many people to tag here but all of you are amazing! i’m gonna pull an ellen degeneres here and say, to the great writeblrs out there, ‘you know who you are’ HAHA50. Do you share your rough drafts or do you wait until everything is all polished? 

well so far i’ve only ever finished writing three first-drafts(2 of them are part of a series, and they’re still on their first drafts since... a couple of years ago. the last one is like all things out of season). for the first two that are part of a series, i was just honestly so glad that i finally finished writing something that i shared it with one of my friends. it is honestly a terrible book with pretty cringey writing and a weak plot, but there are still a lot of aspects of it that i like and i might rewrite it one day.for like all things out of season, though, i don’t want to share it at its current first draft stage, because it’s still kinda messy, the characterisations are a little all over a place (that’s why i’m working on the companion novel now, to figure the characters out a little bit more), and i think it needs a lot of improvement. and also another big thing because i see its potential (unlike my previous two, which have to really be completely scrapped and replotted and rewritten if i want to do it again) and that i think it can come together soon if i work on it for a while longer, so yeah, i’d rather wait till everything’s polished. also, i don’t know who to share my drafts with (none of my friends seem particularly interested??? fine, i don’t talk about my wip with them and a lot of them might not even know im writing something, but for those who i have mentioned it to, they don’t seem that interested. or maybe they don’t want to pry because they know i need my privacy, idk)thank you for the question, and i really really hope i answered the right ones!!!

Are there biases your character has had to unlearn through the course of the story? Whether its from their parents, family or culture - or even something like misplaced trauma - how did they confront them? How did they learn (or unlearn) their own negative perceptions?

Ahahahaha, this has been on my mind for Besany's story arc ever since I decided she was going to be a proper character and not just an avatar for my gaming time. Spoilers ahead for StB and Endwalker, I suppose. I don't think it's "misplaced" trauma, but it's certainly trauma.

So as a hazard of being Bozjan, losing *two* families to the Empire, and being directly impacted by the Bozja Incident, Besany has a deep-seated hatred of Garleans. It's the motivation for her participation in Operation Archon in ARR, it draws her into the conflicts in Stormblood, and it will eventually make for some VERY interesting internal conflict in Endwalker.

The unlearning starts when Hien reins her in to get support from the Populares post-StB. She's not a big fan, and then to see Alphinaud cast off that hate so quickly rattles her so badly that she doesn't know how to react the next time she interacts with a Garlean, which if memory serves is also when she learns Gaius is *alive* and is the only reason Alphinaud was able to return to them safely.

By the time they get to Garlemald itself, the conflict is mostly resolved but the events there further the whole process and by the end of it she's pretty much over it. Except for Zenos, but that's an entirely different can of worms.

She also needs to unlearn her general distrust of people but that's something I haven't fleshed out quite as much. I think that arc will get resolved at some point... in Dawntrail 🙃

Besany and the interviewer stare in confusion as he retreats. "Okay then. That answers that question?"

((it's not written yet, but in my head the One Time she gets super bored is when someone gets pranked and it Goes Very Wrong. After that someone is always assigned to making sure she has something to do, even if it's just sparring or going fishing. Otherwise they just have to keep her away from politics.))

What do you think your character would think on meeting you, their player? Would you two get along? Would you hate each other? Would you be brave enough to admit putting them through things for their personal development? Spill the beans.

Wow this was hard to think about and answer. Whew!

It would probably be like looking in a fun-house mirror. Her personality is heavily based on mine, but without a lot of the... we'll call it suppression I grew up with. I am closer to ARR Urianger than her as I am now so it would be more of a "hey that's a neat but boring person" kind of vibe even though I have Experiences that few people can match a la frequent international travel from age 0 to 17. She's not like me physically, that's for sure, what with the Miqo'te thing. We'd get along for a while, I think.

...Until I muster up enough spoons to talk about writing her, at which point I'm either bonked into unconsciousness for it or given a wide berth for the rest of time. Some (most) of the Things I dreamed up before the story began were physical-based variations of the mental health stuff I live with on a daily basis. I know I very much want to have an angry conversation with whoever decided to make my life as interesting and painful as it has been, so it'll be weird to be on the receiving end of it, but there's no regret here.

Or maybe we'd talk:

"Did you need to make it hurt so much?"

It matches how I felt about a lot of things. Writing was a way to let it out safely, without hurting someone real.

"How'd that work out for you? *shoulder punch*"

1 - What do they do to pass time on long journeys? (caravans, chocobo rides, etc.) and 7 - What do they think of Garlean technology and their use of ceruleum?

On passing time: "Long trips that don't need me to drive are great for napping, if I can find a mostly quiet corner. Or I'll spend the time struggling to imbue my ammunition, because that's always needed.

"If I'm having to lead or guide? Well, I don't mind the boredom much anyway. It's nice to let my thoughts wear themselves out while I rest my body."

Sometimes she'll "nap" while curled up in a loose ball and just listen to the sounds around the caravan or cart to destress. It's less fun to sit in a chocobo saddle for so long, though... and neither of those happen as often as she'd like.

On Garleans and ceruleum: "... Next question."

Besany has very mixed emotions about the Garlean Empire. They are directly responsible for the event that caused her aetheric impairment that's almost completely disconnected her from a hereditary affinity for aetheric manipulation (magic), the loss of two families, and the death toll of the Bozja Incident. She didn't see the benefit of ceruleum and magitek, just the oppression that came from it.

It wasn't until the events of Endwalker that she was able to start letting go of a lifelong hatred that was only intensified by her experiences during Stormblood. Someday she'll be able to forgive, but she will never forget.

How good are they at reading a map? How good is their sense of direction? If it hasn’t been asked for ask game o/

With a map? Solid! Without one? Let's just say "wanderer" isn't exclusively because she likes exploring. She needs clear landmarks (structures or giant crystals, etc) or a map to be able to navigate places without getting lost. If she doesn't have either of those things, she wanders around until she finds someone to ask for directions...

She's only had to use her linkpearl for a pickup from the Scions twice.

9. Do they repair their clothes and furniture themself? For Besany! 🌸

"I... can? Furniture, at least. I had to learn to build shelter for myself and others way too young, and without tools to boot, so when I finally got a set of tools it all just clicked.

The sewing, though... I'll leave that to Tataru. I'm good with big stuff, not the tiny finesse that clothing repair needs."

She won't mention that fixing clothes is a habit she's not used to, because there was never anything to repair them with when she could/would have learned to do so.

What do they think of the political power of the WoL? (Alternatively, for WoLs: do they fear being backstabbed eventually by the city-states leaders if they deem the WoL too inconvenient/threatening?)

@ungrateful-cyborg also asked this! I actually have an answer for both sides of the question from Besany.

On her own political power: "It's nice that I can improve lives with it, but it comes with so much baggage that I really would rather not use it unless I have to."

On the fear of backstabbing: "While I'm sure that none of the leaders would dare to alienate me like that, we've seen subordinates try to make it happen once already so my guard is always going to be up. I think if I wasn't so damn good at solving their problems, I would actually get some peace and quiet for a while."

With her humbler (street urchin) upbringing she already feels extremely out of place anywhere near a throne or senate seat, so more often than not she defers to the Scions for political stuff and only shows up if she's absolutely needed. And the Bloody Banquet just made it that much worse...

Let's see... orphan? check, twice. Unknowable amounts of trauma at the hands of multiple organizations? check. Tried to be hopeful anyway but life kept slapping that down? check!

Besany is not a character I'm writing as a villain but somewhere out there in the depths of my brain there's potentially an AU where she uses the Echo to help her completely wipe out the Empire's presence very violently wherever she goes. The line is thin and she will teeter on the edge of it repeatedly just because of what got her to this point.

This was fun to think about and gave me a boost for a day that's started with low spoons, so thanks Sea!
