A/N: We have finally reached the last rewritten chapter. The next update will be a partial rewrite as it does have certain scenes from a previous chapter, but it is different enough to be considered new! This has been fun and I am glad I decided to do it since I has given me enough time to plan out and begin the next 2 chapters. Fingers crossed I can get those done soon. Thanks for reading <3

Pacing back and forth in the cottage was not helping to ease my nerves. The sun was high in the sky now, and I only wished that they would be back soon. I was completely blind to them. If Shiloh had gone, I would have felt less apprehensive, but she instead left with Seokjin to bring back supplies. The solar witch had only dropped by to pick up some herbs and offer up some of his vegetables. The two left over an hour ago and I found it impossible to sit still.
Not knowing what to do with myself, I kneeled at my altar and began to look over the spell pages once more. They were very difficult to perform with my magical limitations. They tired me easily, but I was getting better at them each time I practiced.
Aiming at the pile of feathers on the floor from a poorly timed transformation, I placed my index and middle fingers together. Placing one of my arms up, bent at the elbow, with my hand parallel to my ear while the other one was pressed against my side, I took a deep breath. Focusing, I began to sing the spell.
“Make forswelan verb âstyntan deorcnes.”
A white spark shot through the air and cracked down on the feathers. Each one of them incinerated into dust and blew away with the breeze. A small, dark spot stained the cottage floor and I grinned. Despite the small headache, I was glad I had done it. When I had first tried, while it had worked very well, I fainted on the floor. Eventually I would be better, and my tolerance would grow. I had never tried this hard at defensive magic before and I was surprised I did not hate it as much as I used to. In fact, I quite enjoyed pushing my limitations.
Taking a quick look out of the window, I was puzzled to see a small puff of smoke in the distance. It had to be coming from the village if I took a guess. Sometimes I could watch fireworks and hear their festivals if I tried hard enough, but this was different. I hoped everything was alright. Fires were normal in Bangtan, so I pushed my worries to the side and hoped they had everything under control. They were strong enough to put out a little fire.
Then I was smelling the faintest odor of ash and shook my head violently. I could not deal with the flashbacks today. Aldara haunted my dreams enough and I was growing tired of my days being ruined by the constant torture her death caused me.
Standing once more, I decided to take a trip to the cellar and get some reading in. It would be a nice distraction. I would change into something else before heading downstairs since I found a new love of trousers from playing around with Yoongi and Seokjin. Like the defensive magic, I hated pants and how they constricted my skin. Aldara would laugh if she saw me; so different from that girl she knew.
Opening my dresser drawers, I pulled out a pair of Aldara’s pants. We were different sizes, but I used magic to fix that. Flicking my wrists, I had my skirt off and pants on quickly. Comfortable, I folded the skirt and put it back in its drawer with the rest of my clothes.
Jimin and I had been talking about installing some new shelves and pipes in the room to give us more space. I doubted that would happen now. He was able to go home. Reality hitting me in the face, I felt hopeless once more. Now that he would have his old home back there would be no reason for him to come here anymore. Or sleep here. Or spend all of his time with me. Mates or not, Jimin had duties just as I did. Time would only tell how that would affect us. If I was not trapped in this house maybe things would be different but be as it was that was not possible. The smoke grew stronger, and I squeezed my eyes shut.
Sighing, I adjusted my blouse anxiously. I needed something to do with my hands. I found the material to be bothersome now that I was in my comfortable pants and decided to change it as well. I had less options but stumbled across a shirt I had made for Jimin. It was a simple, cream linen top with ruffles at the neck and wrists. It was loose on him and even looser on me, but it was breathable and felt like heaven on the skin. Tucking the excess fabric into my pants, I fastened the front and gently tugged on the shirt to retain its flow. While it was impractical for sports it was a nice shirt to wear at home.
Looking at my hands, I began to drag my fingers over the jagged scars covering them. Namjoon had seemed so repulsed by them. I had been horrified when I first noticed them as well, but no one else had commented on them in some time now. Not Shiloh, or Taehyung, or Jimin. It had been like they had never happened. Even Seokjin had kept calm the first time he saw me after the ordeal. It was strange to have someone look at me in pity.
Running my fingers over my face, I dragged it across the large, nasty scar along my right cheek, down my jaw, and into my collar bone. I could feel where each feather started and ended as they came out of my body. I was lucky that had been the only part of my face that began to transform. My hands and arms had the worst of them. My stomach was also badly scarred, but no one had really seen those aside from Shiloh and Jimin.
A crash interrupted my exploring. Freezing in place, I felt myself growing anxious as the bird within me wanted to run. Every piece of my body wanted to run from this conflict. Whatever had just crashed into my house was powerful, so powerful I could taste their magic in the air, and the darkness that surrounded it was frightening. Shaking my head, I willed whatever spell I had been under and focused on keeping calm.
The last time my instincts took over, I had been out of service for an entire day, and I would not be dead weight. I refused to die in this fucking house. Taking a gentle step forward, I began to gently sing under my breath and hovered just above the ground.
I could hear a struggle in the next room, but I could not recognize either voice. They were both masculine, and the both of them were magical, I could sense the differences in their auras. While one was dark and suffocating in the energy they produced, the other was very light and almost as gentle as the air. It even had its own distinct smell- sand and rainwater. Still singing, I floated to the ceiling and gripped the top of the door frame to my bedroom. Turning myself upside down, I squatted and peeked from the top of the door.
I knew a Quietus when I saw one, Aldara’s drawings and countless writings over the years were so detailed I felt like I was there. Its body was like smoke, black air coming off of it. It was transparent and whoever it was fighting was growing frustrated with the creature. Every swing of the arm went straight through the Quietus’s body and inflicted no damage. Slowly taking my hands off the door frame, I changed the spell to keep me on the ceiling. It would last for one minute, so I had to be quick.
Aiming for the Quietus, I moved my hands into position and waited for a good opening. Taking a breath, I prepared to take the shot until something caught my eye.
The other man’s ears were large. Too large. Focusing on him more, I was overwhelmed by how beautiful he was. His skin was like silk and as pale as the moon that was a stark contrast to his snow-white hair. His eyes shined brilliantly, almost white in how blue they were, and I realized all too late what was happening.
The Quietus were not what we should have been fearing.
Quickly moving my aim, I quickly said the spell and shot. The elf cried out in pain but seemed to recover quickly. Shining eyes trained on me, I gasped and fell from the sky. Landing on my shoulder, I shouted once I noticed the elf coming toward me. Scrambling to my feet, I knew that fighting him would be futile alone. I had no idea what spells would work against an elf. The last one had been uncomfortable but that was the extent it seemed.
A black cloud formed in front of me and the Quietus from before was standing tall. Lifting his hands, a huge rush of darkness lunged for the elf and threw him to the other side of the cottage. It took him longer to stand after that.
“What’s going on?” I asked, standing next to the Quietus, arms raised and ready to shoot out another blast. My head ached but I pushed through the pain. I did not have time for my magic to give up on me. “Why is that thing here?”
The Quietus threw another blow at the elf and stepped in front of me before the counterattack could hit.
“They’re attacking Foxglove,” He replied, his echoing as if he were in a cave. “A little help would be nice.”
My heart sinking, I found more motivation to get this elf out of my cottage. I needed to get to Jimin. The image of the wolf in the fire flashed through my mind and I gritted my teeth. Racking my brain, I desperately tried to remember a better defensive spell Aldara had tried to teach me back in the day. In the meantime, I sent out another white bolt and it hit the elf in the forehead.
The Quietus lunged at the elf, grabbing hold of the dark-haired creature, and they tumbled to the ground. Taking the distraction, I got out of the confines of my bedroom and began to take cover in the kitchen. This was no space for a fight.
Going to the other side of the counter, I saw the elf had gotten the upper hand and was now on top of the Quietus. Shocking him again, the elf seemed to be growing tired of my zaps and locked his eyes on me. Speaking in a language I did not understand, the elf kept his hands around the Quietus’s neck as he looked at me.
I felt my airways closing. It was the most peculiar feeling, but it was as if his hands had wrapped themselves around my throat. Tears pricking my eyes, I struggled to catch my breath and clutched at my neck.
“You don’t need to stand up for this one, okay?” Aldara rolled her eyes at my childishness. “Come on. Just try it. You never know when you’ll have to defend yourself.”
Tears streamed down my face while I gasped helplessly for air that was not coming. My head rushed and I fell onto the ground. The elf continued to stare at me. The Quietus, it seemed, could not breathe either. Strange, just a second ago he was untouchable.
“But I’m tired,” I complained.
I had spent the entire afternoon in the cottage getting hit with blow after blow. Aldara had said we would have fun today. She was the only one enjoying this.
“This is an easy one. It’s for the ielfen.”
Black spots dotted my vision as the answer finally came to my mind. Elves were like the ielfen. Maybe it would work. Gasping, I frantically took off the ring I had put on this morning. Bridd Heidi and Griselda both wore large, thick iron rings and I enjoyed wearing them a lot. Thankful for their gifts, I thanked the Goddess for sending them to Earth, before launching the ring at the elf.
As soon as it hit the thing's hand, a rush of air entered my lungs and I gasped for breath. My lungs burned and I lifted myself up. Not wasting a second, I glanced at my altar and dove for it. Getting it off the island, I used magic to find a spell that could produce iron. I heard coughing and spared a look. The elf was clutching his hand, his look murderous, as the Quietus was lifting himself up.
Finding a spell that would liquify metal, I cursed myself once more for not taking Aldara’s training seriously. I would need the cellar to get better ideas, but I did not want the elf knowing where I stored our grimoires. There was far too much power down there.
Closing my book, I placed it on the ground and shot up. Blasting the elf with the white spell from earlier, the Quietus followed up with a powerful gust of black wind. The elf moaned in pain.
“What was that?” I asked, using magic to get the ring in my hands. “Mieltan.” The ring melted instantly, and a long, bright orange blob took its place.
“We call them Elven Hymns,” The Quietus replied, blasting the elf with more air.
I could feel the heat radiating off the metal, but it would have to do for now. Even if I scorched my skin completely, it would be better than dying laying down. Moving my hands, the blob bent and stretched. Testing, I flicked my wrist quickly and a long, thin whip cracked in the air. Some of the embers burned my skin but I ignored them.
The elf began to chant again, but I cracked him with the iron whip before he could do as he pleased. The Quietus seemed pleased by this and moved in on the elf. Locking eyes with me, the elf smiled at me, its eyes alight with anger, and began to speak. I covered my ears and began to sing over his talking.
It happened very quickly, one second the Quietus was stalking closer to the elf and the next he was on the floor, screaming in pain, before doing nothing at all. Shocked, I hardly had time to recover before the elf was upon me.
Flicking and bending my hands, I lashed the elf harshly, but it did minimal damage. It slowed him down but did not stop his movement. The iron would not stop his magic the way it would stop the ielfen, but it hurt him all the same. Hitting his face harshly, the elf howled in pain before grabbing a piece of wood from the ground and flung it at me. I was able to break the board in half, but it gave the elf enough time to throw me backwards, sending me crashing into the kitchen island.
Losing focus, the iron blob was gone. The ring clanged to the floor. The elf smiled at me then, his beautiful face contorting evilly to reveal a set of perfect teeth. He rushed me, but I was faster than he was.
“Mieltan,” I screamed, the gentle melody lost in my panic.
The blob was back, but the elf did not seem to care. Deciding that I would have to cause him great bodily injury to stop him, I stretched my arms out completely. The elf grabbed a hold of me, his hands freezing, and squeezed my face tightly. I flinched back from the pain in my cheeks. He squeezed my skin tighter and spit right between my eyes.
“Who are you?” He roared, sending a powerful jolt of electricity through my body. “Tell me who you are, you leviathan!”
Pissed off and humiliated, I bared my teeth at him and replied, “Y/N.”
I closed my arms quickly, the iron burning into the back of his neck. The elf screamed out and dung his nails into my face. Kneeing his stomach, I shoved him back, the iron stretching with him. Pushing off the island, I crossed my arms and wrapped the iron around the elf’s neck. Closing my eyes, I yanked my arms down. I heard a loud scream, a pop, and then a thump. My eyes still closed; I could feel the elf’s blood pooling around my feet.
Opening my eyes, I realized how harshly I had been shaking. Looking at my feet, I stared at the pool of dark blue in horror. Refusing to look at the elf, I asked the broom and bucket to get rid of it. They got to work quietly and made quick work of it. It took a few minutes to get rid of the body. The blood had dried on my feet.
Looking around the cottage, I was heartbroken at its state. Everything had been destroyed. All of my furniture, the dining table, and the front door had been completely shattered along with a vast majority of the front entrance. There was a large gaping hole in the side of the house. In the distance, the smoke was much larger now and thicker.
My fears heightened and I realized that they were dying. There were people in Bangtan who were dying. Frantic, I took a few steps toward the light when the silver chain glistened in the sun. I took two steps back. There was nothing I could do.
Turning, my eyes caught sight of the Quietus. He had not moved an inch. With great sorrow, I moved towards his body and let out a shaky breath. Whatever the elf had done ripped right through the man’s chest. Kneeling beside him, I wept.
“Y/N,” I heard someone call out. “Remember.”
Sobbing, I screamed in my frustration. I was so sick and tired of these cryptic messages and idiotic subliminals. If it was my job to protect this forest, then they should at least help me do it.
“Choice. Make the choice.” The wind called out again.
Looking down at the Quietus, I thought about what they could mean. The wolf was still fresh in my mind, but I was sure that the vision had taken place in the village. There was no way I could make it there in order to help anyone without the sun setting. It was still mid-afternoon.
A sacrifice…
Eyes widening, I looked over the creature with a newfound hope. I would be the sacrifice, and he would be my target. Racing into my bedroom, I quickly grabbed my standing mirror and brought it into the living room. Placing it beside my altar, I quickly cut open my finger with my favorite knife and began to write the runes needed to call Thelma. It was Enver who showed up in the reflection.
“Enver!” I exclaimed, gathering the materials I knew I would need for this. “I need your mother! Now!”
“She’s gathering people to help Foxglove,” He replied, a spell book in his lap. “I told her what I knew, and she ran to find Shiloh. I haven’t seen your future since the wolves left.”
“I need to make a blood sacrifice to Eir. I need to offer her something for another’s life.”
Enver seemed at a loss for words but recovered quickly, “What are you sacrificing?”
“My powers. My immortality. Everything. Whatever it takes to get this fucking chain off of my leg so I can help these people.”
Enver opened his book but stopped. “Are you sure that’s wise?”
“The man that I love is out there,” I picked up my large, ceremonial dagger and took it to lay beside the Quietus’s body. “I don’t care how stupid you think I am. I need to help him and my friends. Now tell me the damn spell.”
“You’re more capricious than usual,” He mumbled sarcastically.
“I just beheaded an elf so excuse me if my patience is low,” I snapped, attempting to calm my racing heart.
Walking me through the spell, I circled the Quietus’s body in salt before slicing my hand open and going over it in my blood. Marking his forehead with the blood, the ‘x’ smudged and thick but good enough to perform the ritual. Enver told me to gather yellow candles along with a few colors that represented Eir to help with the connection. Finally, once Enver was satisfied with the placement, he told me I could start the spell.
“Yfel gieldan hê all êow êow,” I sang, my voice cracking as my exhaustion began catching up to me. “Efen wlancsêcan êow.”
Taking the dagger, I plunged it into my stomach.
Blinking, when I opened my eyes I found myself floating in a white space. It was quiet, not even the sound of my breathing could be heard. Looking down, I saw a pool of blood at my feet. Touching my stomach with my hands, I could still feel the deep wound. Another pair of feet joined mine and I looked up.
The air was knocked out of me. Staring up at her, it was impossible to think how little my own faded memories did of her. She was so much prettier in person, and I could hardly breathe when I met her bright blue eyes. My lip wobbled and I saw a small tear slip out of her eye when she smiled at me.
“Aldara,” I cried out, wrapped in her arms.
Her hugs were just as tight and warm as I remembered, only I had forgotten about the little squeezes she liked to add or the way he gently swayed. Crying, I looked at her face and swore I saw heaven. Her hair was short, inky, and spiked in every direction while her skin was darker than I recall. Her eyes were gentle and sweet and so different from the hard stares I remembered in my later years. She cradled my face as though it were the finest China and kissed me on the nose.
“My darling,” She sighed. “I’m so proud of you.”
I smiled back at her, attempting to stop the never-ending stream of tears. She used her thumbs to brush them away. Losing my voice again, I leaned into her touches.
“You’ve done well, Y/N,” She said, her voice velvety and soft. “Your sacrifice has been accepted.”
Another fresh set of tears fell from my eyes, and I crashed back into my aunt.
“I’m sorry,” I cried. “I’m s-so s-s-sorry. I should’ve been there. I should have helped you. I should-”
“Hush,” Aldara placed a hand on my head. “You did everything just right.”
“But-”
“This was your destiny,” Aldara said, amusement clear. “This was all meant to happen, darling. You are going to do so many amazing things. Let it go, Y/N. I am here, and I am safe, and you are so much more than you think you are.”
Sniffling, I removed myself from the hug but kept her hands in mine. I needed her to be touching me and reassuring me. I needed this lifeline before I broke down once more.
“Eir has accepted your sacrifice,” She repeated. “The man will live. You have given up your immortality and your place here in the spirit realm.”
I nodded.
“However,” Aldara grinned, “For your act of bravery, your selflessness, and for all of the services you have and will provide this land, she has decided that you will keep not only your ability to shift but your magic as well.”
“Will I lose Shiloh?” I asked.
Aldara frowned, “I’m sorry.”
I shook my head, “No, don’t be.”
“You have until sunrise to say your goodbyes,” She reassured me. “You will never hear or see the spirits again, but we will always be watching. We will always give you guidance, but you must listen.
“You will not be bound to the cottage, and the knowledge within it is yours, but be warned. Your journey will be difficult, and you will face many challenges- that is what you have gained with your offering.”
Nodding again, I hugged Aldara once more. I knew our time here was coming to an end. I thanked the Gods for allowing me this final goodbye. I heard a familiar voice called back.
“You’re welcome.”
Standing a few yards away was a beautiful woman, her golden blonde hair glistening in the strange halo that surrounded her. Her blue eyes sparkled mischievously and a smile played at her lips. Aldara winked at me. I laughed in disbelief, roughly rubbing the tears and snot off of my face. Aldara squeezed me one more time before letting go. Rosette waved at me before disappearing.
“When you wake, the man will also be there. The both of you will need to run to Foxglove immediately. They’re running out of time and the one they will need is the one you have saved.”
The whiteness began to fade. Looking at Aldara, she started to disappear as well. Gripping her hands tighter, I told her that I loved her.
“I love you more,” She replied, pulling me in for a quick kiss on the forehead.
Grabbing my face, she put her lips to my ear.
“Find Naida,” She whispered.
Then she was gone.
Blinking, I was back in the cottage. Enver was gone, the runes worn off, and the Quietus was staring at me. He seemed confused, but I could sense a level of disbelief in his eyes. Looking around, the cottage was still just as fucked as it had been before.
Rolling onto my side, I pulled myself up. When I looked down to find my equilibrium, I was shocked to find the scars were done. Touching my face, the long scar that had been there was lost as well. An incredulous laugh bubbled out of my mouth.
“You saved my life,” The Quietus said, almost as if he did not believe it himself.
“I did,” I replied, pulling myself up. “We don’t have time to talk. We need to leave.”
“Wait,” The Quietus grabbed my hand. “Thank you. I owe you one.” The Quietus stood up effortlessly without tugging my arm at all. “I am Cadoc. And you are Bridd, I presume.”
Nodding my head, I took my hand back, “Just call me Y/N.”
Cadoc offered me a small smile before fixing his eyes on the even larger mushroom of smoke in the distance. Stepping forward, I hesitated as I stepped closer and closer into the sun. However, when I looked down at my ankle, I found the chain gone. The chilling numbness I had grown so used to had vanished and all that was left behind was a thin line of lightness around my ankle. Looking down, up, and then down again, I steadied my breath.
Taking a few steps backwards, I locked my eyes on the smoke up ahead. With one exhale, I was running into the sun. The sunshine on my skin, I thought for only a second before I was a bird soaring through the sky. For the first time in my life, it felt easy. I heard Cadoc shouting and looked down. The Quietus was running directly underneath me.
“Go find the swamp witch!” He spoke. “I will find my brothers and sisters to figure out the plan of attack!”
I cawed in response before gliding to the left. That was the best way through the forest for our kind.
“See you on the other side!” Cadoc shouted.
I was diving into the trees shortly after and calling out to the forest. Everyone would know I was coming. Everyone would know that the world was turned upside down. With the only thing on my mind being the wolf surrounded by flames, I was sure I would keep whoever it was safe. Nothing in the world would hold me back now.
Racing through the trees, I recognized the path I was on and decided to change back into my human form. I was not sure I could use magic in my bird form, and I did not have time to waste figuring it out. Landing on the forest floor, I recognized the mushroom circles around me and knew I was very close to the village.
Closing my eyes, I steadied my breath. Thinking on my feet, I knew I needed to find where everyone had gone. Taking a risk, I closed my eyes again and began to sing under my breath. Opening my eyes, I began to drag my finger in the air and write down my coordinates. Aldara had taught me from an early age how to figure out where I had been. After writing the coordinates, I dragged the numbers to my arm, the marks scratching themselves into my skin. Afterwards, I placed Yoongi, Seokjin, and Wendy’s faces in my mind. With a final word, the scratches were gone, and I could only hope they made it to them.
Above me, I could hear a bird shrieking. Heart swelling, I recognized Patto immediately. The little bird was barreling towards me, his little heart racing, and I could hear him calling out my name. Cupping my mouth, I shouted to him.
“Find Shiloh!”
He stopped right in front of me.
“She’s already on her way here. I was leading the way for her and Thelma.”
Nodding, I dashed in the direction he was flying from. Patto followed after me. It felt wrong to walk further away from Foxglove, but I knew I had to find Thelma. Cadoc had known who she was, and that alone had managed to catch my interest. How much had Thelma known and kept from me?
Catching a flash of red hair, I increased my speed. Shiloh was no longer a bird, her spirit fully formed and beautiful. She had always taken my breath away. Tears streaming down my face, I crashed into her arms.
“We’re going to be alright,” She assured me, arms keeping me held up. “Everything will be okay, Y/N.”
Nodding, I let go of her and found Thelma. She seemed lost for words staring at me. Pulling myself together, I nodded toward the direction the village was in.
“We have to help them,” I told her. “I don’t have time to explain, but the Quietus are not the enemy right now.”
Thelma shook her head in disbelief but did not question me. Letting me know that the sea coven was on their way and the Kim’s were collecting the others, Thelma began to break down the plan.
“We’ll need to get iron,” She looked over at Shiloh who said she had some animals looking for everything they could spot. “Bridd and I will go in first until Yoona gets here. Her and I will be the main forces. The Kim’s are skilled but I’m sure they’ll be busy with keeping Seokjin alive.”
I shook my head, “Seokjin is far stronger than you give him credit for. Wendy will be the weakest link if they’re coming.”
Shiloh agreed. It was not as though the sea witch was useless, far from it, but I knew her aversion to violence would not be helpful. Seokjin would have to work hard enough for the both of them in order to keep her safe. I knew he would. I could only hope the others would be able to stay with him.
“You need to get to Sol,” Thelma said, looking at me. “Taehyung will need the extra support and I know you can manage. If you’re anything like Aldara, you’ll know how to figure this out.”
“I’ve already fought one,” I said absentmindedly.
Ignoring their gasps of surprise, I brought the conversation back.
“I’ll be with Taehyung as long as you can promise me, you’ll keep Jimin safe.”
“With my life,” Shiloh said. “I swear to you, Y/N. No one will touch him.”
Nodding, I knew we had to start moving again. This plan would have to figure itself out as it went. I could smell the fire now. A loud scream echoed through the trees, and I spun.
“We need to move,” Thelma demanded, already breaking out into a run.
Without hesitation, I followed behind her. Catching Patto still hovering, I called out to my friend.
“Lead the others here,” I said. “I’m not sure what to do but get them to Thelma!”
The little bird flew away quickly. Huffing, I ran as fast as I could. I could feel how much my legs struggled to keep up with the others. The burning in my chest was unbearable, but I pushed through it. I could not get tired. I would not let my body let me down.
At the edge of the village, I stared down the wooden gate in horror. The entire thing was ablaze. The screams from the people inside were deafening and I found myself transported to another time.
“Aldara!” The wolf dropped the arm from its mouth before growling at me.
No, I scolded myself. I needed to be strong. I could not lose my focus. Shiloh reached out and placed a loving hand on my shoulder. My skin cooled immediately. Sparing her a thankful look, I went back to the catastrophe before me.
“I’ll take the north,” Thelma said, pointing to the front entrance. “Shiloh, do what you do best. Y/N- do whatever you think is right.”
The three of us looked at another. The tension was palpable, and I could only hope that we would see one another again. Looking between the women, I tried to memorize each of their features. Taking extra time on Shiloh, I knew we would only have tonight. I prayed that I would get another chance to look at her.
“Iċ lufie þē,” I said to them both.
“I love you more,” Shiloh replied, her voice thick.
Thelma said nothing. Without another word, she nodded before making her way to the front gate. Shiloh reached out for me, kissed my forehead, and then disappeared. Immediately, I heard a loud shout over the others and flinched. She was in the middle of it all. Taking a deep breath, I raised my hands.
Singing, I began to draw a door in front of me. Closing my eyes, I pictured the cave. It was a great place to start. I doubted anyone was in there and it was a stealthy way to get into the palace on the other side of the village. Hopefully I can find Taehyung and bring him to me. Drawing the knob, I grabbed a hold of the handle and opened the door.
Darkness greeted me on the other side, and I quickly stepped through. Closing it behind me, the door disappeared. As quickly as I stood in the cave, I was on the ground. Struggling against the person who grabbed me, I used a spell to lift us off the ground. The person did not seem to notice. Looking around, I noticed a familiar smell around me and relaxed. The person seemed confused.
“I’m not an elf,” I announced, keeping my voice down. “Are you with Cadoc?”
I was immediately let go. Planting my feet back on the ground, I turned to look at whoever held me. She was beautiful, her black hair flowing in the wind that surrounded her. While I could feel the gentle breeze, it seemed to be coming off of her body rather than somewhere else. Her eyes shone in the darkness and her face was stern.
“Are you the bird?” She asked, her voice rough and deep.
I nodded, “Y/N.”
“Samanya,” She replied, giving me a stiff bow. “Do you have others?”
“Yes, my friends are witches. They’re coming to aid the wolves. My spirit friend, Shiloh, is also here to help.”
“We will not attack them,” The woman assured me. “Go and do what you must. My brother said you are special.”
Taken aback, I could only think to ask the dumbest question on my mind.
“Cadoc is your brother?”
“Not by blood,” Samanya replied.
I nodded back. Turning on my heel, I wished the Quietus woman good luck.
“Wait,” She called to me.
I turned back around.
“Where is a good place for an archer around here?”
I thought for a moment.
“Well, the watch tower normally. I would say to go to the top of the cave but there is little cover. The sun is setting now, though.”
The woman spared me a smirk.
“I’ll wait until nightfall then. Thank you, Bird.”
“You’re quite welcome,” I turned back around. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some things I need to take care of.”
“Wait,” She called out again. “Would you like some clothes?”
Looking down, I realized that I was still very naked. Covering my chest, I nodded. Samanya chuckled, pulling off her overcoat. She wore a simple, thin tank top underneath it. Her skin had an otherworldly, strange, blue tint to it that glistened. Hanging the coat to me, I decided to use magic to make it easy to shrink and stretch with my body. After, I ripped the sleeves off it before throwing it on. The breeze felt uncomfortable on my heat, and I struggled to ignore it. Still, I knew I needed to start moving.
Walking out of the cave, I stuck to the sides and slowly crept around. On either side of me all I could see was fire and smoke. It was almost impossible to see through. Deciding that I would not get far in this form, I hopped into my raven and flew overhead. No one paid any mind to me, but I had a large view of the battle ground from up here. The coat felt strange against my feathers, but not unbearably so.
The sea coven had joined the fight, along with the others, and just as I thought Seokjin was too busy protecting Wendy to think about anything else. Yoongi and his mother worked in tandem, fighting the elves with relative ease. Shiloh’s skin glowed strangely in the sun as she fought, and I could tell the elves tried to avoid her if they could. Unsurprisingly, however, she was meticulous and stood her ground. Beside her was a large, silver wolf shredding an elf.
Immediately I wanted to go to him. I could see blood staining his fur. but he seemed fine otherwise. It seemed like his adrenaline was keeping him going. Still, I wanted to make sure he would be alright with my own two eyes. I knew, however, that far more pressing matters had to be attended to first. Shiloh was with him, and she would keep him safe. That would have to keep me satisfied for now.
Calling out, I swooped down further into the city. The fire had engulfed just about everything. I could see bodies everywhere, both elf and wolf alike, and I grew sick. I could not imagine who had fallen already, but I hoped it would be those I had not known. My selfishness threw me for a loop, but I pushed the guilt down.
In a technicolor world, I picked out Taehyung easily. He was not fully shifted, his claws and teeth bared for everyone to see. I noticed strips of fur beginning to break through his skin and wondered how it felt. Deciding the best way to get his attention would be to help, I increased my speed and dove toward the elf he was fighting. Using my talons, I gave it a deep lash on the face before shifting.
Taking the elf down, I used the spell to melt the iron ring. Pressing it against the elf’s face, I stared stone-faced as it screamed. Adjusting myself, I swung my leg across its chest and sat on it. The elf continued to scream in pain, and I pulled the iron toward its neck. Wrapping the molten metal around it, I lifted its head before breaking it off.
Blood splattered on my face, but I gave it little thought. I had no time to get sick. Getting back to my feet, I looked for Taehyung. He was already fighting another one. Moving my hands, I cracked the elf in the face with the iron while Taehyung got a good grip on its face. Turning away, I spotted Yoongi a few yards away. The elf screamed.
Taehyung pressed his back into mine, the two of us covering the other while we waited for more to come. Yoongi shouted a loud incantation at an elf. It was down before I could blink.
“How?” Taehyung demanded; his voice unconventionally hard.
“Sacrifice,” I replied. “It’s a long story. We need to get to Sol.”
Taehyung grunted, “We can go together. Stay back-to-back as long as possible.”
I shook my head vigorously, “Magic is the only way. We’ll never make it there in time like this.”
Turning to meet his eyes, I was disheartened to see scars forming on his tanned skin. Taehyung hardly seemed to notice they were there at all. From behind me I heard Yoongi yell.
“I’ll fend them off! Go!”
Grabbing a hold of Taehyung’s hands, I instructed him to think of Sol’s face. I did the same, every freckle and line of her smile came to me easily. Praying that Tae had the same memories, I began to sing. I kept my eyes trained on him though I knew there were creatures falling all around us. With a final word, we were surrounded by stones.
Taehyung seemed to know where we were, and I followed him wordlessly. The palace was quiet, eerily so, and I wondered if we were too late. Making our way up a flight of stone stairs, the two of us walked slowly to the top. I swore I saw a glimpse of white, but it was too late to say anything.
All at once, we were surrounded. Elves were everywhere, their inhumane beauty unsettling and frightful. Taehyung gritted his teeth and growled deeply. Knowing that my spell would be useless against so many, I wracked my brain for something else that might be better for something like this. I had never been more disappointed in my magical abilities before.
The elves ran at us all at once. There had been at least ten of them, and those were the ones I could count, but I was unsure how many there actually were. Taehyung barked orders at me with ease. The two of us walked down the stairs without looking back. With my whip in hand, I cracked it at them to keep them away as we descended. Taehyung seemed to contemplate his options. A wolf would give him more range of motion, but I would be more vulnerable to an attack. The elves, however, could start their hymn and kill us both.
“Can you do anything else?” He asked me, not unkindly.
I shook my head, “I didn’t have time to figure out a good spell.”
Taehyung breathed through his nose heavily.
“Keep them away from you,” The alpha ordered. “I’m going to shift.”
I nodded. Taking the whip, I wrapped it in a large circle around us. Taehyung seemed pleased with the elves’ new hesitance.
“They’re voices make you do whatever they say,” I told the wolf. “They’ll need us to stay close for it to work.”
“I’ll go up the stairs as quickly as possible,” Taehyung decided.
“And I’ll give them a good show,” I replied.
With the plan made, I used a spell to make the iron stretch even further. The hot metal brushed against the elves making them scream out in pain. Lifting my hands up, the circle grew larger, and I willed it to spin. Taehyung used the distraction to shift. His wolf was beautiful, golden yellow, and he was massive. Towering over all of us, Taehyung howled before charging through the lines of elves. I smelled his fur burning, but he did not look back. Knowing that it was my turn, I moved the iron like a wave.
The metal surged forward and covered the tops of their heads before coming back to encircle me. Successfully getting most of their attention, I began to make a show of the metal. Bending and twisting it to my will, I slapped away the elves as they continued to rush forward. I knew this farce would not last very long, but it was my best chance at coming up with another plan. Cracking the metal again, I sent another elf flying.
Behind me, I heard doors slamming open and I hoped help had come. Not taking the chance of looking back, I continued to fight what I could see. Better to fight the evil I knew and hope for the best. Either way, I had a feeling my death would be swift.
“Cyning îsengelôma ecg!” A voice shouted.
Smiling wickedly, I sent another elf back. Enver stood beside me, his short stature and wild hair bringing me more peace than I could have realized. I knew he had not come alone, and I smelled a Quietus nearby.
“I found Cadoc,” The boy explained. “Mama doesn’t know I’m here.”
Scoffing, I continued to keep the elves away from me. I felt it before I saw the elf. All at once, my arms dropped and the lava surrounding me was at my feet. Falling to the floor, I could no longer breathe. The iron stayed strong around me. I could hear the struggle but was unable to think past it without seeing the iron lose its fluidity.
“Nâwa ðêode.”
Air seeped its way into my lungs as I coughed. Proud that I had kept the barrier up, I looked up at the boy to see him looking impassively at the elves. Their lips were unable to move, and I could sense the panic building within them. Helping me up, Enver explained that it would only last for five minutes. Nodding, I gave him the iron ring.
“Keep this,” I instructed.
Deciding to test my skill, I recalled the incantation the swamp witch had used earlier. Lifting my hands, I pointed at an elf before shouting. It fell to its knees without another word. Giddy, I smiled once more before joining in on the fight. I could hear Cadoc fighting somewhere behind me and trusted his abilities. Without their tongues, the elves could not touch him.
“Well done,” I heard the Quietus call out to me as I killed another elf.
“We need to go help Taehyung,” Enver called out.
Cadoc dropped the last elf a moment later. Running up the stairs, I did not check to see if the others were following. Sliding into the long corridor, I went toward the sounds on the left end. Sure enough, Taehyung was fighting five by himself. Behind him sat a small, sickly Sol. She could hardly move and sweat stuck to her forehead. Still, she growled deeply and swung her arms as much as her spent body could.
Anger surged through me, and I found myself wanting to fight. All of the anger and frustration had led to this moment, and before I could stop myself, I was yelling. Two elves dropped immediately. My vision was turning red, and I felt my hands beginning to shake. The other three turned their attention to me. A loud squawk echoed off the walls when I opened my mouth.
“Cyning îsengelôma ecg!” I cried.
One elf dropped and Taehyung made quick work of the other two. Sol whimpered and growled helplessly on the floor. With the elves gone, I shook my head to clear my thoughts. My hands still shook. Rushing to Sol’s side, the wolf snarled and snapped at me with little regard. She looked feral. Taehyung came to her side, his golden fur shining gently in the moonlight through the windows, as he nuzzled her gently. The omega sagged in relief as tears poured from her eyes.
“Stay with her,” I heard Cadoc say from behind me.
Taehyung’s fur stood up on end, readying himself for an attack. I reached out for him. Sol lunged at me, her claws digging deeply into the skin of my arm. Crying out in pain, I begged her to let me go. She only growled and cut deeper into my flesh.
Taehyung licked her face, and her hands were gone a second later. Curling into him, Sol cried and whined helplessly. Her eyes were far away. Unable to look at her anymore, I turned to her mate.
“He’s with me,” I explained. “Stay with Sol. She’s unwell.”
Taehyung seemed torn but ultimately chose to lay down beside Sol. I told Enver to stay with them while Cadoc and I went back to the center. The witch easily accepted this and made himself comfortable on the floor a few feet away from the aggressive wolf. Handing me back my ring, he told me that I would need it depending on what vision came true.
“Come on,” I said, brushing against Cadoc’s smoking body.
The fire was still raging on as we walked back out. There were more bodies piled up now and I refused to look at them for too long. I could not see a friend like that, and I did not want to find pleasure in my enemies dying. Running, the two of us were back in the action quickly. I caught sight of Namjoon on the other side of the village. He was fighting viciously. Beside him were two other wolves I did not recognize. Shiloh’s body was easily picked out in the darkness, and I was pleased to see her unharmed. It looked like she was rounding up those who were unable to shift. Jimin was out of my sight.
An elf ran toward me, a large, toothy smile on its face. Raising my hands to defend myself, I jumped when the elf went down first. Walking closer to it, I saw a large, long arrow sticking out of its head.
“Samanya,” I said, absentmindedly.
“You’ve met?” Cadoc asked, hands shooting out smoke that encapsulated an elf.
“Briefly,” I replied, taking down another elf.
Arrows were shooting everywhere, and I asked Cadoc if there were others.
“Just Samanya and Lorcan.”
The chaos had become tiring, and I could feel my arms growing heavy. I had not stretched my magic out this much before. My body felt stiff and cramped, but I pushed on. I heard a piercing whine from the other side of me. Turning, I caught a glimpse of a wolf trapped in the arms of an elf. Turning my attention to them, I quickly got rid of the elf and ran to help the wolf.
I did not recognize the black and brown wolf, but I knew he needed help. Using a quick transportation spell, we were shrouded in darkness within the forest. Looking around, I knew we were far away from the village going north. The wolf quickly shifted back into their human form, and I gasped in horror.
“Hoseok!” I shouted, running my hands over his body.
The wolf was crying in pain, his face twisted, and his body writhed. Touching him, I could tell his ribs were broken. He would not be able to fight anymore tonight. I began to perform a healing spell. I could feel myself crying but I did not acknowledge it.
“I need…” The wolf struggled to speak. “I need to get- back.”
“You’re not going anywhere,” I said, my voice sharp as my tears fell. “You’ll die!”
“Hyuna-” He tried to sit up but howled in pain.
“She will be fine,” I promised. “You need to stay here and don’t make a sound.”
Hoseok nodded reluctantly.
“I’m-” He hissed when I applied a small amount of pressure to his right side, “-I’m glad you’re- alright.”
Once I was satisfied with my work, I began to use a camouflage spell on him. It was difficult and required patience, but I knew it so well after the years working with the wolves that it was easier than it should have been. Hoseok fought the urge to sleep, and I used a spell to force his eyes closed.
“Rest. You need to heal,” I said, wiping my tears roughly. “We will get you soon.”
Hoseok was already asleep before he could answer.
“Please be okay,” I whispered to myself before drawing a door back to the village.
Returning, I was back where I had last been. A pool of blood had stained the grass and I found myself crying again. He had to be okay. He had to be.
Taking a moment to look around, I felt defeated seeing the decimation all around me. The village had been such a beautiful place and now it was ash. Steeling myself, I knew I needed to be strong right now. I could fall apart later.
Taking a deep breath, I began to run. Finding Jimin was my main goal right now. Making my way across the field, I decided to preserve my energy. Instead of using the incantation spell, I stopped and grabbed an arrow stuck in an elf’s head. Ripping it out of place, I melted the iron down and circled it around my body. Garnering the attention of a few elves, I paused before continuing my hunt.
Standing tall, I cracked the metal whip. With the elves distracted, I made quick work of the small group with magic. Putting the metal around my body, I was beginning to feel just how burned the palms of my hands were. Still, I marched on in my pursuit of Jimin.
The last time I had seen him was when I first arrived in Foxglove. The chaos had only gotten worse since. Hearing my name being called, I fought off one more elf before twisting to find the source.
“Y/N!” Yoongi screamed.
Running towards him, I could tell that Yoongi was hurt. He seemed unable to focus his eyes on anything and he stumbled around clumsily. Catching my friend, I forced the melt to form a large, dome-like sphere around us.
“What happened?” I asked, trying to calm his hysterical shouting.
“I can’t see,” He screamed. “It keeps getting worse!”
Clutching his face, Yoongi clawed at his eyes and smacked his head. Grabbing his hands, I pried them away from his face so I could get a look at him. I asked him to breathe and use a light spell. With the dome illuminated, I took my fingers and opened the witch’s eye wide.
It was cloudy, his iris hardly visible, and completely glazed over. One eye looked worse than the other, but he was unable to follow any movements of mine. He was in pain and my heart broke. I had no idea how to fix something like this.
“You need to see someone,” I mumbled. “Enver is safe. I’m sending you to him so he can look at you.”
“Please don’t leave me,” Yoongi cried, clutching onto me like a lifeline. “I’m scared, Y/N.”
Clutching him close, I reassured him the best way I could. Deciding that I could not wait any longer, I closed my eyes. Holding him close, I began writing in the air with my finger. Yoongi was inconsolable and unaware of what was happening. Feeling awful, I took advantage of his disability to send a note to Enver. Moments later a faint glow encapsulated Yoongi.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered before letting him go.
Yoongi screamed as he disappeared. Catching my breath, the weight on my shoulders began to weigh down heavily but I knew I could not give up. Standing, I lifted my hands and sent the iron shooting out forcefully. A few elves were waiting and had been cut in half. Bile built up in my throat at the sight of them and I could not help from coughing it up. Wiping my mouth, I went back to running.
There were more elves than wolves on the ground. I had never known much about their kind, and Aldara hated talking about them, but it seemed like they were a never-ending force. Now I could tell that we were winning. Some had begun running back into the forest.
Catching sight of Wendy on her own, my heart dropped, and I acted on instinct. Running to her, the sea witch almost cried in relief once she saw me. Wrapped her in my arms, the witch looked shell shocked. Keeping her safe behind my back, I started fighting once more.
“Where’s Seokjin?” I asked, taking out another elf.
“His father was hurt,” She answered, her voice trembling and raw. “He said he would be right back but that was a long time ago.”
Gritting my teeth, I brought down two more elves. I instructed Wendy on what to do if any of them came close, and like Yoongi, she seemed reluctant to let me go.
“Wendy,” I said, clutching her shoulders. “I have to find Jimin, and you need to find Jin. Okay?”
She nodded, her bottom lip wobbling. Kissing her cheek, I gave her one last look before running off again. I caught sight of Yoona and Hoji fighting together. Feeling better about our chances, I began to look around for my familiar. Shiloh had been easily spotted before, but I knew her physical form would be gone in a few hours. Her powers had to be lessening as the clock ticked.
Finally catching sight of her red hair, I ran toward her very quickly. She was surrounded by a large group of elves, and while a few hours ago they would have been a quick defeat, now I could tell Shiloh was struggling. Shouting, I took down one elf. Joining her, Shiloh seemed pleased to be together once more. The fire returned into her skin again, I was happy to see a gentle glow coming off her. It took us no time at all to get rid of the group.
“I’m so glad you’re alright,” She sighed, grabbing hold of me.
“Thither Jimin?” I demanded, returning her hug quickly.
Looking around now there were no other fights happening. It seemed like the village had gotten ten times quieter. In the distance, I heard the sound of a horn and whatever elves had been left behind were running into the trees.
“Swilc tîrêadig,” Shiloh reassured me, running her hands down my face. “He chased a group into the forest with his brother and Jungkook.”
Nodding, I finally heard screams of “retreat.” Whoever had stayed to fight were now gone. Those who refused to leave were taken care of very quickly. On edge, I did not let my guard down. Even if they left now, they would be back. Shiloh wrapped an arm around me.
“Where’d you go?” She asked. “I felt you leave earlier.”
Springing back to life, I told her about Hoseok’s condition. Nodding, Shiloh was gone and a second later was back with the alpha in her arms. He was still asleep, the spell I had used in full effect. Relieved that he was safe, I reached for him and began another look over.
“Hoseok!” A blood-curdling scream echoed through the village.
Hyuna was running, her eyes wild, and in hysterics. Stepping out of the way, I did not stop her from grabbing hold of him. Shiloh spoke with her gently, understanding her grief, and tried to calm her down.
“He’s just sleeping,” I tried to interject but the wolf was not paying attention to a word I said.
Stepping away to give them space, I looked around and finally sighed. The entire village was destroyed. The homes and business to the east were completely burnt down and the only structure left had been the palace. Bodies were everywhere and a sob wracked through my body looking at it all.
Having enough of the facade, I let my tears fall freely as I cradled my head. Sniffling, I rubbed my face and began to check to see if anyone at my feet could be saved. Unfortunately, I came back empty handed. Another distraction, I grabbed a hold of the mind-numbing task and continued to check.
Stumbling across a witch, I could not hold back the cry of pain I let out when I recognized Cordelia. She was ashen, her skin not yet cold, but her heart long gone. Her stiff body was hard to drag out from under the elves keeping her trapped, I grunted and groaned as I pulled her body. I heard my name being called from somewhere behind me, but I pointedly ignored it.
My anxiety began to build as my own fatigue began to hit me in waves. I could barely keep my arms up and my body ached, but I could not just leave her here to rot. The witch had always been so kind to me. The memory of stealing from her garden filled my head as my cries became harsher. Vision blurring, I screamed in frustration as I continued to struggle.
“Bird!” The voice was beside my ear now and locked my arms down.
Fighting against the grip, I shook the person off and went back to grab Cordelia’s arms. Hands reached for mine, but I slapped them away. Angry, I whipped around.
“Lufian nealles hrepung me!” I shouted.
Shaking, I went back to Cordelia. This time the hands chose to help me instead of guiding me away. Lost to the world around me, I kept all of my focus and energy on getting the witch out of the pile. With another hard tug from the two of us, Cordelia’s body was freed.
Looking around helplessly, I was unsure what to do now. She was out but she was still dead. She would always be dead. Crying, I let the person wrap their arms around me. Being held felt better than I thought it would, and I held onto them like a lifeline.
“She’s gone,” The voice said, and I started to recognize that I knew who this was. “All you’re doing is hurting yourself.”
Sniffing hard, I leaned back and was face-to-face with Samanya. I was confused why she had come to me at all, but I was grateful, nonetheless. She seemed unfazed by the carnage, and I wondered what she had witnessed in her life. Forcing myself back together again, I let go of her.
“Your friends need you,” Samanya continued. “Be strong. You can cry later.”
Nodding, I wiped my tears and took a few deep breaths. Coming back to reality, I found that many had survived though injured. Bodies were being picked up and taken off to be worked on. Realizing that I would be helpful, I pulled myself in that direction.
A hand caught my shoulder.
“Stop,” The Quietus said. “You have others, yes?”
I nodded, confused and uncomfortable.
“Help them,” She demanded. “You don’t need to traumatize yourself further. We will be taking care of the sick.”
Dazed, I chose not to argue with her and went to find the other witches. I needed to know our numbers. Walking through the bodies and burning buildings, I called out for everyone I could think of. Shiloh was still with Hyuna, so I let her stay where she was. The wolf looked like she was having a nervous breakdown.
“Help him,” I whimpered, pointing at Hoseok’s fallen form.
“He is first on my list, Bird.”
The first witch I came across was Thelma. She was limping and seemed to have a hard time getting around. Making my way to her, I wrapped her arm around my shoulders and helped her adjust her weight. With a quick thank you, Thelma asked for a second to catch her breath.
“Let's get you looked at,” I mumbled.
Calling out for help, a Quietus I had never seen before materialized before us. Quickly checking over her body, the creature seemed to know Thelma as he called her by her name.
“Thank you, Lorcan,” Thelma whispered, taking hold of the Quietus.
The two of us maneuvered her the best we could to not hurt the witch further. The Quietus did not reply to her, but I could not blame him. Things were happening and small talk would be useless. After taking hold of her Lorcan looked me over, and I tried to figure out where I had heard the name before.
“I’m fine,” I said, knowing what he was looking for.
The Quietus nodded before disappearing with Thelma. Continuing to look for others, I found a small group of them near the edge of the forest. I could already see Yoona freaking out while Heji and Hoji made futile efforts to calm her down. Realizing that Yoongi was still with Enver, I quickly ran up to the group to let her know that her son was alive.
“Mâl is nealles hêore!” Yoona screamed at Hoji.
“Shouting hêrespel ne lof âhwæðer,” The other witch bit back.
“Both of you stop,” Heji scolded, her eyes clearly tired.
Approaching everyone, I decided to make myself known.
“He’s with Enver,” I said.
Three heads snapped toward me. Yoona sighed, relief washing over her face. Scooping me up, the kitchen witch cried. Hands brushing over my body, my face, and my hair, Yoona kissed my face. Her tears wet my skin. Hugging her, I continued to tell her about Yoongi.
She nodded, still clinging to me. “Thank you, thank you; thank you. I love you so much. Oh, God, my baby.”
While she wailed, I rubbed her back soothingly and tried to give her time to collect herself. It was unlike Yoona to show much strong emotion. While not as stoic as her son, or as erratic as her mother, Yoona was a strong, impassive woman. This was uncharted territory for me to handle and I was unsure if I was helping her at all.
With Yoona hanging from my neck, I looked at the twins. They looked more like Seokjin than ever. Their wide eyes and open mouths drank in my body as if they were seeing a ghost. Awkwardly smiling, I let them know they were not hallucinating.
Hoji snapped into action, throwing her arms around me with unbelievable laughter bubbling from her lips. Heji was still stuck in place.
“How?” Hoji gaped at me, eyes darting across my face.
“Not now,” I whispered, holding Yoona tighter. “We have to take care of the others first.”
Not knowing if I should bring up Cordelia, I decided to save it for later. I doubted any of them could handle that right now. Slowly removing Yoona’s grip from my body, I passed her off to Hoji who took her with a knowing look. Heji had inched closer to me now, uncertain but far less afraid than she seemed before.
“We need to round up the others,” I started, “I’m going to go find Taehyung. Yoongi’s with him and the kid in the palace. Sol was too sick to be left alone.”
“Oh!” Yoona suddenly exclaimed, reaching for me again. “I saw Jimin earlier. He was with some wolves running after a big group of them.”
Nodding, I replied, “If you see him before I do tell him I’m safe. Try to find his mother and sister-in-law. One is old and the other is a human.”
“I’ll take care of that,” Heji finally spoke for the first time since seeing me. “Park, right?”
Taking extra care to let them know that I would be fine, I squeezed the three women before taking off. I was exhausted and I was not confident my magic would carry me far enough. Legs burning and heavy, I ran. Hearing thundering footsteps coming up behind me, I spared a look over my shoulder and saw Namjoon flanking me.
Slowing down, the wolf skidded to a stop next to me and bowed his head down. Understanding, I pulled myself on his huge body using his fur and told him to take me to the palace.
We were across the village soon after and the alpha was able to climb the large, rocky hill with little trouble. What would have taken me ten minutes on my own, Namjoon did in two. Bursting through the already open doors, Namjoon bounded up the stairs and toward the last place I had left the group.
Sliding off of Namjoon, Enver let the others know I was there. Yoongi still lacked his eye-sight and touched the walls around him and asked for help standing. Noticing Taehyung and Sol’s absence, I asked where they went.
“They’re in the room,” Enver answered. “The chick started biting and snapping at Yoongi, so he took her to calm down.”
Yoongi stumbled over but Namjoon caught him with his muzzle. The witch cried out in surprise and the kid had to catch him.
“It’s just a wolf, Yoon,” He said, balancing Yoongi.
I had never seen him so out of sorts before. Yoongi was moving bizarrely, his body jerky and reactive, but his eyes completely zoned out. Blinking without seeing, Yoongi forced himself to breathe and reach out his hand. Touching Namjoon’s nose, he seemed to relax before groaning.
“Lôc setnes man onwendan?” He cried.
“As soon as Thelma gets her hands on you,” I answered. “Or your mother. Either one should do the trick.” I hope so.
“Y/N?” He asked. “Is everyone okay?”
I bit my lip. Enver caught the action, eyebrows creasing, with a questioning look. I shook my head at him but found it hard to answer Yoongi’s question. I knew lying would be a disgusting thing to do. We all loved Cordelia, but I was afraid that this would be the wrong place to let that information out. Making eye contact with Namjoon, he nodded his large head at me. Taking that as my answer, despite him having no idea what had happened to my friend, I sighed gently.
“No,” I whispered.
No one said anything else. I doubted they really wanted to hear anymore. Enver continued to stare at me, and I felt the need to let him know that his mother was alive. The young boy nodded, the first set of tears I had ever seen from him building up in his eyes, and I could tell he had been worried. Namjoon rubbed the boy’s stomach with his head before gesturing toward the doors behind me.
Walking to the room, I hesitated momentarily before knocking. A gentle ‘come in’ came from the other side. Using my body weight, I shoved open the heavy, metal door.
It was a nice room, the gentle lighting and warm toned furniture comforting. I knew it looked different from how it had always been. The furniture was thrown about in disarray, broken and shattered, with large claw marks covering the walls. Realizing that I was standing in Sol’s prison, I had to bite my tongue so as not to curse the very place Ahn stood. If he stood at all. With the somber realization that he had been completely absent from everything I was unsure if he had made it past the first surge.
Sol and Taehyung were sitting on the floor. The bed had been completely demolished in her frenzied nights. Curled into his side, Sol looked much better than I last saw her. Her skin had gotten warmth back into it and her breathing was slower. Her head was buried in his neck taking in his scent like oxygen. Side eyeing me, Sol did not seem to mind my presence as she had before. Unconsciously, I ran my hand over the arm she dug into. I could feel the crescent scars healed over.
“They’ve gone for the time being,” I said. “You need to get down there, Tae. They’re so many people…”
I could not finish my thought. Cordelia’s face flashed through my mind. Her thousand-yard stare, the coldness of her skin; she was so, so heavy. Beside her face I was suddenly seeing Aldara’s arm hanging out of the wolf’s mouth and blinked back my tears. Knowing a new wave of tears were taking over, I cleared my throat and looked at the ceiling.
“I’ll be down soon,” He replied, “Sol just needs to feel safe.”
I nodded but said nothing more. What was there to say? Sniffling, I turned out of the room and rallied the boys. Enver and I helped Yoongi onto Namjoon’s back before getting on ourselves. The three of us only took up half of his back.
Back at the village, I saw Shiloh helping the Quietus now. Hyuna and Hoseok must have been taken away to get him additional treatment. Asking me to let down to join the others, Namjoon stopped and took off with the boys to find help for Yoongi.
Determined to find Jimin, I began to ask around if anybody had seen a silver wolf. I got the same story about the forest from everyone, but no one had seen any of them come back. Deciding to go look for them myself, I shifted and flew to the forest. Someone had said they had gone west, and I worried they had gotten hurt on the way back.
I had complete confidence in my mate, and from what I had heard about Jungkook he was no easy target. I knew I would find them, but if they would be injured or lost, I was unsure. Flying overhead, I looked for any abnormalities in the trees, but the thick green layer was almost impossible to see through even with my eyesight. Calling out for help, I waited for a response.
It was a crow called Fala who answered my call. She had seen three wolves running toward Salhai Pond. Calling out my thanks, I raced toward the magindara infested waters in hopes to find the men.
Salhai pond was an eerie place to be at night. The water shimmered unsuspectingly in the moonlight, but I knew better. At the edge of the pond sat a fish woman, her hair glistening and gleaming. Knowing I would get nowhere in this form, I pondered taking my chances by transforming.
While all of the stories of the magindara were true, flesh-eating mer-people, I had heard Salhai people were tamer. Not kind, nor gentle, but tolerant. They tended to know who lived in Bangtan and who did not and picked their target accordingly. Thinking of Jimin, I shifted. I would rather take the risk than not see his face.
Stepping closer to the pond, the creature looked at me before I knew what was happening. With a low hiss, the woman bared her teeth at me menacingly. Lifting my hands in surrender, I tried a softer approach.
“Wait,” I pleaded. “I’m just looking for my friends. They were chasing a group of elves that were attacking Foxglove.”
The magindara cocked her head at me. It was difficult to make out most of her expressions as the moonlight did little to light up the clearing. Her eyes reflected back like a wolves, and I knew she could see me perfectly. Keeping still, I waited patiently for a response.
“What’s your name?” She asked.
I had never heard one of their kind speak before. It was a throaty, airy sound that seemed to hiss from her throat. I wondered if it was painful.
“Bridd,” I replied. “I am Y/N, the 9th Bridd of the Bangtan Forest.”
“Were,” The magindara hissed back. “You were. Now you’re not.”
I nodded, “Yes.”
Seeming satisfied with herself, the magindara grinned. Her teeth were serrated and glowed strangely in the moonlight. Fixing me with an amused look she pointed north.
“Wendy Byrd speaks of you often,” She seemed bored and picked at her nails, “You two are very close. Am I right?”
“She is one of my best friends,” I bit my lip and held back my emotions. I hoped she found Jin and was safe with the others. “I love her very dearly.”
The magindara gave me a once over, her hair flowing like a waterfall down her waist. She caught my gaze again and held it. I had no idea what she was looking for, but I had to hope it would be enough to get me out of this alive. Magindara could not leave the water for long, but she could get me to her if she truly wanted to. All she needed was a song and I would walk into her hands willingly.
“I will grant you passage,” She finally said, her voice taking on a sweeter tone. It sounded almost like she was beginning to mimic my own. “I am Meraud. You’d do best to remember that Bridd.”
Thanking the woman, I shifted once more and flew in the direction she pointed to. While I had no reason to believe her, and in fact I almost wanted to go the opposite way, I had a feeling she was not lying. Wendy had said they enjoyed games and whatever their end goal was would never be uncovered unless they wanted it to be. It was best that you stayed on their good side in the meantime. It usually keeps you from becoming a nuisance.
Charging forward, I was at another crossroads as I was unaware where I should go now. I could hear voices but none of them were ones I recognized. I had more than likely stumbled across an elf camp.
Like a lightbulb, an idea popped into my head as I realized the wolves might have stayed back to figure out where they were. Sinking into the trees, I began to fly in a large circle around the woods. With my attention on finding the others, I did not listen to the elves too much. They did not seem worried or suspicious of me at all.
“Man forerynel ðrýðig, m¯æg,” The elf said.
Excited, I realized that the elves spoke the same language as witches. Sitting around a bonfire, I almost laughed at their stupidity. They truly thought they would easily overtake Bangtan and the wolves within it. I wondered if they even knew what lived here. Listening closely, I was disappointed to find their dialect slightly different, and some words I did not know, but I understood enough to keep with the conversation. They were discussing the new war.
“We fordêman trifulian ðæge pro hinder Northorn,” Another replied.
The last piece of land they should have gone for first was this one, and I was baffled by how confident they all were. They believed they could simply take Northorn and come back to Bangtan a few days later to finish off the wolves. I would need to speak with Taehyung about this as soon as he was able to be separated from Sol. The elves continued to laugh and joke about the deaths they witnessed tonight, and I was taken aback by their callousness. None of them mourned their dead- in fact, they seemed to be happy to be rid of the “weak.”
Hearing a gentle rustling beside me, I hoped backwards to play part of a startled bird. The elves were blissfully unaware. Looking around, I caught the smell of wolves nearby and locked in on it. Gliding easily, I found the trio a few feet away. Flying into a tree above them, I cawed.
Jimin’s head snapped up, his eyes finding mine easily, and I could see him soften. Jungkook and Ji-Hyun seemed confused by my nearness and even swatted at me to go away. I could only assume they had no idea that I was not a random bird giving away their location.
The elves were still completely unaware of our presence. Talking loudly, laughing, and drinking around their fire I almost wanted to interrupt them. I knew that would be unwise, from what I had seen we were outnumbered and woefully unprepared for a fight with this group. I could smell blood coming off of the trio of wolves and I recalled Jimin’s wound from earlier. I could guess the other two were hurt as well.
“Duguð hl¯æfdige has gifeðe ûs of pro icfêowerdôgor m andtacan sê sunset!”
Perking my ears, I listened in. They would come back four days after they took Northorn and its cities. I tried to understand why they would take this new plan of attack but could only guess it had something to do with Northorn’s fighting style. They could easily gather enough iron to protect themselves and anyone else they could get their hands on where other areas of Lustra were not as keen on blacksmithing. Hopping down from the branch, I landed on top of Jimin’s head. The wolf made no sound. Leaning close to his ear, I stayed as quiet as I could.
“We need to get away from here. There’s too many of them.”
Nodding, the wolf looked between the others while they slowly backed away. Without a sound, the four of us were far away from the camp. Running, none of us spoke but I could sense the three of them were talking amongst themselves. I knew how connected wolves were and that they were able to speak without shifting, but I did not fully understand the connection or how far it worked. Uncomfortable by their silent conversation, I decided to start flying beside Jimin instead of on top of him.
The wolf seemed displeased by this but did not argue with me. The time I had spent with the alpha I knew he did not like to have disagreements in the company of others. We would likely speak about things later when we were alone again. The guilt from lying was beginning to come back to the surface.
The chaos had made it dissipate, in fact, I had not thought about it at all. Now, looking at the patch of bloody fur on his leg I felt sick once more. Yoona would be furious with me, I knew Wendy would have trouble forgiving me once it came out that I knew something, and it would be difficult to imagine Seokjin being understanding. I could only hope the wolves would show me some grace, but it was doubtful. Their friends and family were dead and that was on my shoulders.
Getting back to the village, I was glad to see the fires put out. The smoke was not easy to breathe, but at least the burning would not travel too far out now. Flying into Foxglove, the wolves shifted as soon as they were back inside. It was always shocking how normal nudity amongst others was in Foxglove.
Taking a deep breath, I landed gently before shifting as well. Sitting on the ground, I felt heavy. It was easy to forget how worn my body was when I was a bird. Taking a moment, I caught my breath and tried to keep my eyes open. The small headache from earlier was getting worse and a dull ache spread on the left side of my head. Rubbing my eyes, I thought about getting up, but my body protested the notion.
“Amica,” Jimin’s voice was very close to my ear.
Turning, I spared him a small, tired smile before leaning back into him. His body was strong, his muscles hard against my back. Wrapping his arms around me, he nuzzled my neck and nibbled my ear lobe. Humming in pleasure, I melted further into him and slipped my eyes closed.
“We need to get you home,” He whispered. “The sun will rise soon.”
Shaking my head, I basked in his presence. He was the perfect pick-me-up, and I would never tire of how calming he was.
“Doesn’t matter,” I slurred. “I’m free.”
Hearing Jimin’s name being yelled, my eyes snapped open, and I quickly shot up from our position. Gently shaking my head, I looked for the woman calling his name. Jimin seemed to know who she was. Standing up, Jimin opened his arms and hugged her tightly.
She was young, younger than the both of us, and pale. Her dark hair was up, messy, with loose curls sticking every which way. She looked tired and for that I could understand. Sniffing, I knew she was not a wolf and it dawned on me that she might be Callisto.
Struggling to stand, I finally got up. Catching the eye of the young girl, she shoved Jimin away and came to my side immediately. Wrapping an arm around my waist, she called out for help.
“You look awful,” She said, thanking Jimin when he came to my other side. “Gosh, you must be exhausted. What’s your name?”
A Quietus was in front of us. Looking up, I smiled lazily at Cadoc. The man took me into his arms immediately. Asking me questions, I answered them as best as I could.
“Are you sure it’s not from the ritual earlier?” He asked, eyes filled with concern.
I shook my head, “No- just used a lot of magic.”
Eyes slipping shut, I blinked back to reality and looked at the girl. She was small, thin, and mousey. Her eyes were bright and shined with innocence. I knew she would be traumatized for life and thought about my own memories. Would little Callisto close her eyes and see fire? When she fell asleep at night would she smell the smoke and hear the way the screams echoed through the night? I hoped, for her sake, she was stronger than me.
“I’m Y/N,” I replied, flashing a sad smile before being whisked away.
