I am absolutely in love with all these recent AdiYa scenes where Aditya has heart-wrenchingly honest conversations with Zoya. He speaks so freely of his emotions regarding the whole ordeal, because he knows that she would understand. In fact, she is the only one who could actually understand how he feels, because she is the only one who knows exactly how it feels.

The script writing for these scenes are absolutely terrific, and are pulling on all the right heartstrings. And add to that HC’s commendable acting skills and it’s an absolute treat in the form of a scene that leaves my heart achingly satisfied.

To add to that, I love the stark differences we get to see these days between Aditya’s equation with Pooja and his equation with Zoya. For starters, in Pooja’s diary it was mentioned that she had this constant need to ‘take care’ of Aditya. She also further questions herself and wonders if her love towards him simply limit itself to this want of hers that obviously comes from the fact that he is her best friend, who has had a rocky childhood. This piece of information shed immense light into depicting how their relationship functioned. Pooja craved the kind of love she gave to Aditya. But he couldn’t give Pooja the passionate, and meaningful kind of love that she desperately searched for in their relationship partly because he didn’t realize that she was in search for something like that in their relationship. Then, there is Zoya.

Zoya, much like Aditya, is used to being pampered and comes from a very sheltered and privileged lifestyle. She is also extremely naïve and easily fooled – a trait that annoyed the living daylights out of Aditya and many of the audience in the initial episodes. However, regardless of Aditya’s annoyance from the very beginning, he has had this almost reflexive need to protect her, and to take care of her. Something he didn’t feel as much towards Pooja possibly because he was used to being taken care of by her, and because of the mature demeanor that Pooja carried, which made her seem like a woman who didn’t need to be taken care of.  But Zoya, from her outward demeanor to her general naivety towards reality, shows her need to be taken care of by someone else, and thus highlighting on her high dependency on others. And Aditya could tell this from their very first meeting.

This factor in their relationship was highlighted again and again with incidents where he attempts to warn her regarding Mahi’s intentions, despite him being in his “ruin Zoya’s life” phase. And then we had multiple incidents where he saves her life- with no obvious gain other than an easing of his guilt – with hospital scenes that basically painted the fact that Aditya has an uncontrollable need to take care of Zoya, and keep her away from danger.

Another interesting thing to note here is the difference between Aditya and Yash with regards to how they treat Zoya. They both try to take care of Zoya, and do so successfully in all given situation, but it’s the way they do it that differ vastly. While Yash takes care of Zoya by shielding her from the world, Aditya takes care of Zoya by exposing her to the world, allowing her to grow into her own person, and only intervening when she seems to be stuck. This was so clearly portrayed when he watched her let out her heart in the middle of the street after finding out that Yash signed the divorce papers. He watched her quietly, letting her get all her emotions out, and then proceeded to not let her know about the truth behind the ring, as he knew that it would be too much for her to handle. He lets her crash and burn first, before intervening - that too only if she needs an intervention – and help her pick up her pieces.

Another incident that highlighted this further was when she began to distance herself from the world around her after her suicide attempt. He was the only and the first person to notice this. He saw her walking towards the path of depression, and despite him claiming to have done what he did, so his “entertainment” wouldn’t be ruined, it was as clear as day that his real intention was to help Zoya get out of the vortex she was unknowingly stepping into.

But what should also be noted is that it’s not just a constant state of Aditya taking care of Zoya. No. She, too, can be seen taking care of Aditya in various situations like when he came to her house after over-dosing on the allergy syrup. She patiently listened to him pour his heart out until he fell asleep. She was also the first one to call him out when he was too pre-occupied with his internal demons and lashing out at others right after Pooja’s demise. She told him the bitter truth at a time no one else dared to, and made him realize that he wasn’t fighting against the world; he was just fighting himself. For Aditya, this was crucial to know, because at the time, just like a child would, he was misplacing his anger and repressing his emotions as a way of coping. She had continued to offer him advice, again and again, which had proven to be valuable to him in fighting his internal battles. So in hindsight, they had helped each other, without even realizing, to overcome the stress and trauma of the very adversity that brought them together in the first place.

Ironically, this balance of helping each other and taking care of each other’s needs was exactly what their respective marital affairs lacked. There was no balance between Pooja and Aditya, much like how there was no balance between Zoya and Yash.

One thing I’ve noticed over the past few weeks, is that Aditya never quite smiles genuinely unless he is around Zoya. As in, the only time i’ve seen him smile whole heartedly was very few to begin with, and all of those moments happened when he was around Zoya. And I don’t necessarily mean that in a romantic way, either. It’s just that with his family, and even when he is with Arjun, he seems very constrained in terms of showing how he truly feels. And sadly for him, no one in his family seems to have quite picked up on the blue cloud that he carries around with him constantly, and he puts in an effort to hide it from them too. This could be due to the fact that he is trying to compensate for having left by letting them be happy and fuss over him like this before he leaves once again. It is noticeable because pre-leap Aditya was a character that smiled openly and enjoyed life to the fullest, just like how post leap Zoya is. And to have him suddenly be portrayed, as he is now, further highlights how different he is as a person now. Zoya noted this in today’s episode, too.

But at the same time, it is realistic, because Aditya is depressed. His behaviour is typical of someone who is suffering through mild depression. He literally looks like someone who is just going with the flow of things just because. But what’s interesting here is that when he sees Zoya, his emotions suddenly starts looking more genuine, and more open. But this reaction wasn’t an instant one either, because during their initial interactions after leap, he still did have that restrain. But as he got more familiar with this “new” Zoya, you could see him slowly lower his walls around her. In a way, this could be because she reminds him of the person who he was - the positive things about his past self. Like being so full of life, and spreading that positivity to those around him. And so far, we got to see small glimpses of old Adi, only and only when he is with Zoya. Like his little sarcastic comment about Zoya’s dad hating him as a hobby, after she said the same thing about her and his mum. Or when she woke him up from sleep at 2 am. These were two conversations where I actually saw a little bit of our snarky/sarcastic Aditya make a short-lived comeback. And honestly, I really, really miss him being snarky and sarcastic! His dialogues were such a treat back then, and HC was just perfect in his delivery of them. And to be honest, I can’t wait for that Aditya to return in full form, because this new Aditya doesn’t seem to quite have the same effect on me. Today’s “annoying aunty face-off” also showed a glimpse of old Adi. 

Coming to Zoya’s progression, I thought that Zoya’s sudden development felt like a bit of whiplash. I mean don’t get me wrong, I am so glad to have Zoya not crying every two scenes, and have her actually answer back to Anjana (and those aunties) and be a total “Sherni”, but at the same time, this overly bubbly, cheerful Zoya felt a bit too much to me. This new Zoya doesn’t hold that same aura for me anymore. She has progressed, yes, but I feel like that initial essence of her that made her Zoya, is lacking. But she does seem genuinely happy and bubbly and just super cheerful, which kind of reminds me of her in the first episode, before the accident. So in that retrospect, I guess it does make sense of her to be super bubbly and cheerful, with the additional change of being braver around people.

Moving on to AdiYa relationship, after watching the first few post leap episodes, I was ready to place my bets on Zoya being the first to fall in love, but the very recent episodes have me second-guessing big time. I like that they are showing a friendship between them, and unlike with Pooja and Aditya, in this scenario, I feel that Aditya seems to be more aware of Zoya as a woman in a more intimate sense, than he was with Pooja (e.g. when she was applying medicine to his wound, and with the shower scene today).  Zoya, too, can be seen being acutely aware of it, but not as much as Aditya. And it makes sense, this was what Pooja wanted from him but never got, or in other words, this was one of the reasons why his marriage failed. And on the other hand, we see Zoya finding her best friend in Aditya, and being able to share all her problems with him, and being able to understand Aditya. This is repeatedly shown and highlighted with her saying that ‘thinking like Aditya’ has helped her solve so many problems. Even Arjun commented on this and said that she is a lot like Aditya lately. For her to be like him she needs to understand him and she clearly has done exactly that. It was lack of this kind of understanding that derives from friendship that led to the end of her marriage with Yash. So in terms of writing of the show, it feels very well rounded.

Coming back to how Aditya reacts to Zoya, I think it’s safe to say that he is beginning to be infatuated with her. He seems to be in awe of the person that Zoya has become, and I feel that even if it isn’t been shown explicitly, he has begun his journey towards Zoya. Zoya on the other hand doesn’t seem to be there yet. But what is interesting is how they have been subtly avoiding Aditya getting to know about this “Arshad” guy and that Zoya is getting set up by her Dad. They are planning something with this, for sure. So it will hopefully be used in the future as a major plot-moving tool and also in order to shift AdiYa’s relationship towards a new path.

And of course, with the expected revelation of Anjana having kidnapped Sakshi and being an unhealthily obsessed mother to Aditya, it made me doubt if she had anything to do with the Yash-Pooja accident. I mean she did say, “Tumhari beti bhi neh toh Adi par cheat kiya tha na? Kya hua uska anjaam, yaad hai?” If this doesn’t scream possible suspect, I don’t know what does! And keeping in mind that she did say something to Harsh during the AdiYa trial, which he told her to keep quiet about, and was not further explored, my suspicion of her being possibly involved increased even more.
