I'm actually blown away by the portrayal of women in Advisors Alliance. I had such low expectations and they did something actually interesting out of it. I still have peeves, but on the whole, they neither put the issue of oppression aside or pretended that multiple wives weren't a thing, but leaned in to it hard. Yes, give me wives who support each other against their *cough* less than ideal bastard *cough* husband. Give me wives who are fully aware that monogamy is an unrealistic ideal and still fight for their rights in their own, quiet (and loud) ways. Give we wives who say 'women don't interfere with politics' and interfere with politics in one breath.
I'm crying. It's beautiful.

Watching ep 23 of Advisors Alliance, I caught a small detail. This lady-like lamp in the corner of the room. It's based on an actual historical artifact.
I'm so impressed and amazed by how they have included so thoroughly researched historical details but never flaunt them or draw attention to them, they are just... there in the background! If you are not knowledgeable on the subject you would never notice! I only recognised this because I've read about this lamp before, this makes me think there must be tons of other stuff I might have missed!
Things like this is why I keep an eye out for "historical details" in period dramas even though accuracy is not a thing one must demand from a drama. But hey, keeping the expectations low helps you admire and enjoy it even more whenever they do small things like this right!

AA ep 1-5
ep2 "否則 我殺人啦" <-why does cao cao sound like a disciplinary teacher
can't stand liu xie's portrayal. the show is painting him as a 無能君主 but still i have a soft spot for him...!
why does every c-drama has a slow-mo meet-cute moment for their romance arc
ep 3 yang xiu's actor is so expressive with his body language. Nodding his head, touching his chin, etc., these gestures would be excessive on any other character but they suit him so well
the screaming??? that is some weird directing
ep 4 雖然令君口口聲聲說司空對他極爲信任 但一路看來曹也多次向他施壓試探
感覺其實他們的關係也是暗流涌動, definitely not as solid as cao & feng xiao's relationship
這個局也設得太假了吧 can't believe yang xiu didn't see through their scheme
cc is ruthless towards cao pi.
the (failed) prison break adds nothing to the plot
yang xiu's speech in the prison!!
cc and his stick-and-carrot approach 把令君哄得死死的
奉孝進來時那狡黠又聰慧的小表情好可愛
i know the show's supposed to be centre around sima yi & yang xiu's kingmaking rivalry but the cc-xun yu-guo jia trio absolutely steals the show
speaking of, yu hewei gives one of the best cc portrayals ever, he's not as thespian as 94' 央三 but still has more flair than 2010s 新三 cc. i love that u can tell he enjoys his role a lot.

Xiao Shunyao containing multitudes.
Even if he's technically using similar facial expressions, the vibe is different - and not just because of the costuming. Actors have to be malleable, I guess, so they can believably disappear.

The Advisors Alliance Translation Post 2: “Husband, don’t cross the river. Husband, nonetheless, crossed the river.”
The Advisors Alliance 大军师司马懿之军师联盟 is a 2017 two-part Chinese TV series depicting the life of Sima Yi, a government official and military strategist who lived during the late Eastern Han Dynasty 东汉 (25 CE - 220 CE) and the Three Kingdoms Period 三国時代 (220 CE - 280 CE). [Wikipedia of the show’s first season]
The second part is titled Growling Tiger Hidden Dragon 虎啸龙吟 and keeps following Sima Yi’s life as he matures and becomes wiser [Link to the show’s second season’s MyDramaList page].
The Weibo account [Link] of the show made a series of posts in the style of small encyclopedias explaining different historical and cultural facts that where included in the series. The user @moononmyfloor compiled the 50 posts and asked me to translate them. This will be an ongoing series where I will do just that.
The posts are not in order of the episodes but I will provide the episode and season number to avoid confusion. If there are any mistakes in translation, do let me know in the comments or privately message me and I will do my best to fix them. Although I tried to stay as close as possible to the original text, I had to take some liberties in some posts to get the meaning across better. On the side, I have included extra information from personal research that explains certain things better.
If it is difficult to read the letters, tap or click on the image to expand it. Without more preamble, here you go.

Extra information:
Yuefu (乐府), literally Music Bureau, are a genre of ancient Chinese folk songs that, either imitate the style of, or are from the Imperial Music Bureau. The latter was an institution in charge of collecting and writing lyrics to folk songs. Yuefu are known for having strict syllabic rules that change from dynasty to dynasty.
《公无渡河》 is also known as Kong Hou Yin (箜篌引). Konghou is an ancient Chinese stringed instrument similar to a harp. A Yin (引), in this context, is another type of ancient music poetry that has a freer syllabic structure and is characterized by long syllables that go well with the melody of the konghou. Below is a picture of the instrument:

Allow me to clarify something. The folk song 《公无渡河》 was recorded by Cui Bao in "Notes on Ancient and Modern Times" to be of Gojoseon origin. As such, Koreans consider it to be their oldest surviving folk song.
The Chinese consider it a Chinese Han Dynasty song on account of the tale being set and song created in the Lelang Commandery [108 B.C.E. - 313 C.E.] which is one of the four regions Gojoseon was split into while under Han rule. Koreans consider the residents of Lelang, and the other commandaries, to be Gojosen Koreans who retained a separate culture to the Han Chinese. If you wish to conduct further research into the song, don’t get surprised if you read different names for the characters that appear in the story.
Koreans call the song "Gongmudohaga (공무도하가)” and the ferryman Gwaklijago (곽리자고). The Korean folk tale differs from the Chinese retelling in that the Korean name of Gwaklijago wife, who is credited with creating the actual song, according to certain Chinese and Korean retellings, is Yeo-ok (여옥) rather than Li Yu (丽玉). In Cao Yong and Cui Bao’s retellings, the wife of the drowned drunk man created the song while, in the Korean version, it was the wife of the ferryman who, upon learning about what had transpired from her husband once he came home, created the song on her harp, called in Korean gonghu (공후).
Many Chinese poets have retold the story in their own ways and added, omitted, or reinterpreted content. Some of said poets are Li Bai and Chen Shou of Shu Han. On top is Li Bai's version which lacks strict syllabic structure, a signature of his style and, on the bottom, Chen Shou's more structured one:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This expression 《公无渡河, 公竟渡河》 is often used as an allegory to satirize someone who is heading into clear danger but is too stubborn or obsessed to listen. If this person doesn't listen, then they are sure to run into trouble.

Love me, love my voice - a Cdrama where good things happen to good people
Fair warning - it's the fluffiest fluff that ever fluffed the Earth, so if you crave some drama and violence at the moment, then maybe save this one for later.
Tumblr media
The plot of this drama is extremely simple. A university student, going by her second identity online as Sheng Sheng Man, produces/sings traditional style music. Due to a coincidence she gets acquainted with Qiang Qing Ci - a very famous but mysterious voice actor who never shows his face in public, with whom she bonds over a shared passion for good food. And a slow, gentle love story starts from here.
If you are tired of misunderstandings, love triangles, stupid decisions and unnecessary conflicts between your romantic leads; if you want to witness healthy relationships, tight friendships and just an ungodly amount of cuteness - then you came to the right place.
Tumblr media
(Also there's a lot of cooking and/or eating delicious food. In every episode. Really, don't watch it when you're hungry, you'll die)
Now, I don't usually read or watch something that has romance at its front and center (though there are always exceptions, albeit rare). But I'm obsessed with Under the Skin, and I loved Word of Honor, so I decided to give Tan Jianci and Zhou Ye a chance for at least one episode, and well - here I am, writing this whole thing after watching the show and then even reading the original novel.
Qiang Qing Ci (or Mo Qing Cheng irl) is a smart and kind man, a doctor, who can cook and has an absolutely gorgeous voice that he uses for good but could use for evil (Tan Jianci could hypnotize people and I wouldn't even mind tbh). How can he work as a doctor and actor simultaneously, you might ask? That's Cdramaland for you, baby! His outer softness doesn't mean that he is completely harmless however. For all of you little freaks out here (myself included), there are some *ahoy!* moments too
Sheng Sheng Man (or Gu Sheng irl) is a girl surrounded by the love of her parents, five slightly overprotective cousins and her friends. She's shy and a bit sheltered, but not stupid, and Zhou Ye's acting makes her character very charming instead of the cringe that is usually associated with this kind of type of girl on screen.
Almost every character there is a good person, and you know, sometimes you just want to see those kinds of people have a great time. They do what they like for a job, fall in love, go on holidays, have friends that are ride or die for them and vice versa. There's no jealousy and backstabbing, all problems are resolved quickly, and everybody can actually COMMUNICATE.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One thing that I'd noticed while watching that surprised me a lot - is how everybody's acting is so relaxed and natural. When they're in a group together, you genuinely believe that all of them are good friends with each other in real life too. The light teasing, interrupting one another while talking, their mutual support and closeness. The actors probably had a lot of fun while filming. And goddamn, it's so good to see it! I'm also insanely jealous.
Music
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Traditional music and the profession of voice acting are as much of main characters as our romantic leads are. The way that it was shown was so full of love and respect for the craft and people involved in it, it's amazing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despite the simplicity of the plot, there are still moments of heightened emotions, and people there deliver! Their acting shines through especially during the on-stage performances.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That "Swan Song" broke me. I swear, during this whole performance I was bawling my eyes out.
(also insert here a joke about Shen Yi probably being able to recreate Qiang Qing Ci's face based on just his silhouette).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(This is a Night Show in Yangshuo that the characters attend at some point, "Impression Liu Sanjie", an absolutely incredible performance, and I'd pay all the money I don't have to go see it personally)
Side characters (a completely self-indulgent section):
This is a rare Cdrama where there are no annoying side characters. I love them all and would kill anyone who'd think of bothering them even slightly.
Tumblr media
These are MuMu (outwardly cold but actually very kind and empathetic) and MoBai (a lovable dumbass), a couple of cosplayers that pop up here and there, and nothing that you say will convince me that they're not together.
(And sure, you can read it as purely platonic friendship between bros, but honestly why would you. Also, I think the creators made a perfect recipe to avoid the wrath of censorship - just get two guys, occasionally make them say that they're single and looking for girls, but then show them always together, and just don't explain anything.) (Watch me finding a subtext even in the straightest show I've watched in years.)
Tumblr media
The same goes for singers Fei Shao and Wang Ke, except for they're both bumbasses, and I love them dearly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dou Dou Dou Bing, a manager of their recording studio as well as the voice actress, and she's awesome.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jue Mei Sha Yi, a voice actor, a CEO of his own company and the one that the Viki's live comment section thirsts for A LOT.
Tumblr media
Feng Ya Song, a voice actor and a pediatrician as a side gig, and he's cute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Geng Xiao Xing, a friend of Gu Sheng, works for some app (?) that collaborates with the voice studio. She's also cute and I like her hairstyle.
... And some others.
***************************************************************
If what I've described here interests you at all, then feel free to check it out. I think this is a good show to watch right now, as we all collectively try to crawl out of the winter depression.
This has been your friendly ghost from Abyss, with some recommendations on how to distract yourself from the horrors of existing(*^-^*)

I know we all like to joke about the Voidhound being... well the Voidhound. But they can put together a pretty massive criminal empire by the end of the vanilla story.
Made me want to have my own Voidhound gradually change from that plucky smuggler to a Godfather like figure in the criminal underworld. But sadly with that increased power comes greater responsibilities. So where they once could do whatever they wanted and move about freely, they’ve now become trapped within the confines of the empire that they’ve made.

today i fucked up at work, the biggest i’ve done so far (for those who’ll understand, i did a sql update that was supposed to touch like a hundreds lines at best... and actually updated 12 MILLION lines in production environnement lol. in auto commit of course)
and it was completely self sabotage because i did have a warning message and i thought “maybe i should check with [dev who wrote the sql request]” and then i went like nah because 1) sometimes i’m just real dumb, as everybody can be, and i knew (thought ?) that i used this before and it worked fine, and it had been a while since i almost did an error, so i let my guard down. sorry ITIL 2) sometimes i know something is risky and that i could done one (1) thing to be sure it’s not... and i don’t do it and do it the risky way anyway. i think it comes from a deep want of “if something happens to me i’ll have something interesting to tell so that people will give me attention and comfort me”. like. I KNOW OK. i know. (dw it’s never about actual dangerous thing. more like. precariously put plates.)
and the weirdest thing is... i didn’t fucking care. part of it is because 1) i knew it wasn’t worst than what a colleague did before (it would lose time, but not money) 2) i have quite some golden points so i knew i wouldn’t be scolded, and what terrifies me is scolding, not actual consequences, if i don’t feel guilty about the consequences 3) i knew it was fixable, even if it would took time (four hours with the help of two colleagues, altho with long time of wait so not actually four hours) 4) i’m also very good at blocking emotions which still surprises me because i cry so often. but i like crying and i block the emotions i don’t like i guess. i think it’s kinda coming up to me now lol i kinda wanna cry. i’m not sure because of what emotion tho. i think because i’m disappointed in myself. (i use to have such a good work ethics !!)
anyway what the fuck. i know the deep answer is to go the fuck to sleep. also eat
