“'Speak of neither to me!’ said Andreth. 'I desire neither. I was young and I looked on his flame, and now I am old and lost. He was young and his flame leaped towards me, but he turned away, and he is young still. Do candles pity moths?”
“Adaneth, I tell thee, Aikanár, the Sharp-flame loved thee.”

Andreth also known by the Elves of her time as Saelind (wise woman), was an Edain of the House of Bëor. She was the second child and eldest daughter of Boromir.
Andreth was deeply in love with the Noldorin Elf-lord Aegnor, the son of Finarfin and Eärwen and the brother of Finrod, Angrod, and Galadriel. During the Siege of Angband, the Elf-lord saw young Andreth in the reflection of Aeluin and they fell in love.

Did anyone else notice this line in the Silmaril?
"But they took Vingilot and hallowed it, and bore away through Valinor to the uttermost rim of the world; and there is passed through the Door of Night and was lifted up even into the oceans of heaven."
Sound familiar at all?
"and Varda hallowed the Silmarils, so that therefore no mortal flesh, not hands unclean, not anything of evil will might touch them but it was scorched and withered."
While the Silmarils were cool by themselves, maybe it was Varda who gave them their frankly insane powers (hurting Morgoth, allowing Carcharoth to bypas Melian's Girdle, reaching Valinor, etc)?

Speculative Headcanon about Tarn Aeluin
(oh, you thought I was done? XD)
I'm still thinking about Tarn Aeluin, specifically an interesting detail mentioned twice in Beren and Luthien, that I am not quire sure what to make of.
"a tarn of water, blue by day, by night a mirror of dark glass for stars of Elbereth that pass above the world into the West. Once hallowed, still that place was blest: no shadow of Morgoth, and no evil thing yet thither came; a whispering ring of slender birches silver-grey stooped on its margin, round it lay a lonely moor, and the bare bones of ancient Earth like standing stones thrust through the heather and the whin;" (emphasis added)
"Thus Gorlim died an evil death, and cursed himself with dying breath, and Barahir at last was caught in Morgoth’s snare; for set at naught by treason was the ancient grace that guarded long that lonely place, Tarn Aeluin: now all laid bare were secret paths and hidden lair." (emphasis added)
These passages could easily be poetically describing Tarn Aeluin remaining undiscovered by Morgoth and his servants until Gorlim betrayed Barahir's band to Sauron, and I'm not saying there is necessarily anything more to it than that. That said, the second passage raises several questions in my mind. What catches my attention is that the description is active in tone - the "ancient grace" isn't just a lack of evil as it is in the first passage; here it is described as actively guarding Tarn Aeluin.
It makes me wonder: if there was indeed some sort of protective force, what was it and how did it come to be there? I think one possibility is that Melian may have had something to do with it. In The Silmarillion, Melian is said to have hallowed the waters of Tarn Aeluin in days of old, and Melian is famous for protecting Doriath with her enchantments. Could she have done something similar at Tarn Aeluin? It seems possible. But why? Did she love the place so much that she wanted to protect it from evil? And when would she do it - before or after she married Thingol and the dwarves settled in the area? Alternatively, could any ancient grace there have predated Melian? If so, what could have caused it, and why?
And if there was some sort of protection, how could this play into all the different people (except notably Morgoth and his servants) finding it? Was there any causation between them, or is it merely correlation?
We just don't know
(But it is fun to think about! And I personally like the idea that Melian may have had something to do with it)

I kinda feel like with how much Elrond gets depicted as the heir to Doriath or Gondolin or the House of Fëanor, or all or none of the above, we sometimes forget about his human half.
(or human 3/8ths, whatever)
On Balar, did he ever wander among the escapees from Dor-lómin, the fled from Brethil, the survivors from Sirion, learning their songs and stories and hopes and griefs? Did he find his childhood playmates, now grown? Did any survive? Does he remember them?
Did he ever stand beside his brother as Elros gave mighty speeches of unity and the strength of the Secondborn? Did he, in battle or in uneasy alliance, meet the descendants of those who betrayed Maglor and his kin, who enslaved Tuor and his kin?
Did he ever brave the moonless dark of Taur-nu-Fuin, seeking the ruins of Ladros or the mire that was once Tarn Aeluin? Did he ever wander the scorched plains and shattered encampments of Estolad? Did he see the Hill of Slain and guess which skeleton may have been more recent than the rest? Was another skeleton holding its hand, an arrowhead in its skull?
Did he grudge Elros the Bow of Bregor or Dramborleg or the Ring of Barahir? Did he think to keep relics for himself, if immortal memory could not suffice? Did he know the Bow's name?
In Lindon, did he befriend the Men who refused Númenor? Did he live alongside them for centuries as they lived and died? Did he seek out Dor Firn-i-Guinar, if it may have survived?
Did he find it?
Did he send letters to the West through Númenor, seeking the truth of Tuor's fate? Did he ask after the ancient legends and myths of the House of Bëor, now only remembered by Finrod Atandil? Did he befriend the ancestors of the Dunlendings, distant kin of the House of Haleth? Did he speak against the deforestation of Enedwaith and Minhiriath, their homeland? Did he welcome those who fled into Imladris, if they sought it?
Did he visit Númenor? Did its kings listen to his counsel? When did they stop?
Did he welcome Elendil as a kinsman, as a nephew, or as a stranger?
(I could go on into the Third Age but I think this is getting long enough already.)

Here's Karelia, the North of Russia, but doesn't it look like Tarn Aeluin in Dorthonion?

Just remembered that Tol Fuin exists as an island off the coast of Middle Earth so Tarn Aeluin  - the beautiful lake hallowed by the Maia Melian, where Andreth and Aegnor fell in love and Barahir and Beren had their camp, could still exist. Also Sauron’s old stomping grounds as a vampire which is creepy and propably why it’s still called the ‘Night Isle’ or something, but I love that a remnant of the First Age still exists along with Maedhros’s ruined citadel of Himring and Tol Morwen

laden things
Do you remember, who were king A mortal harp's feel in your hands What songs you wove upon the strings Upon the airs of night-chill lands Can you still see the ashen porch of Bregor's house, the hazel chair where you might sit by wavering torch and talk the night through unaware Do you remember how the wind Would bend and sway sentinel pines The stars that ringed Tarn Aeluin Within its darkling depths enshrined Do you remember year by year what child was born, what woman tall became a wife that was a girl you sang to sleep in father's hall Do you remember every name Each generation upon each Each song and grief, unspoken aim bonfire revel and late-night speech Memory is a laden thing Dost thou remember, who wert king?

ooooh, how about Aegnor and Andreth and 'changing seasons'?
Thank you for this! Sorry for taking so long to get round to these - I was hoarding them up for a wet weekend, but the last few weekends turned out busier than I expected. x__x Anyway...
-
The turning of the seasons put Andreth in a melancholy temper, all the more so when she sat with Aegnor by Aeluin-side — the birches and the wych-elms fading from their summer splendour, turning to yellow and shedding their leaves, the inevitable death; all while the great pines stood tall and unchanging against the mountains. She was akin to the birches and the elms: in time, she, too, would fade and die, while Aegnor, like the pines, would remain, evergreen and eternal.
She wondered sometimes whether the pines carried the memory of those other trees who faded every year, and wondered, too, whether Aegnor would remember her.

TOLKIEN WEEK 2022 | DAY 5: HEARTBREAK ⇢ ANDRETH
“Andreth adaneth, the life and love of the Eldar dwells much in memory; and we (if not ye) would rather have a memory that is fair but unfinished than one that goes on to a grievous end. Now he will ever remember thee in the sun of morning, and that last evening by the water of Aeluin in which he saw thy face mirrored with a star caught in thy hair—ever, until the North-wind brings the night of his flame. Yea, and after that, sitting in the House of Mandos in the Halls of Awaiting until the end of Arda.”
“And what shall I remember?” said she. “And when I go, to what halls shall I come? To a darkness in which even the memory of the sharp flame shall be quenched? Even the memory of rejection. That at least.”

Dorthonion, the land of coniferous forests and steep slopes and cold mountain lakes, located to the north of greater Beleriand
The heathlands are around Tarn Aeluin in Ladros and are described in a lot of Beren's story
Dorthonion was the domain of Angrod and Aegnor, sons of Finarfin until they fell in the Bragollach. It was also the home of the people of Bëor (including Morwen! Morwen was born here!)

Lay of Leithian Part 3: Of Barahir and his band of Outlaws
(Fun fact: The Tarn Aeluin was said to have been hallowed by Melian.
Also, birch trees, which grow near the lake, were often associated with Varda.)

Broken Memories - Prompt 3: Light
Golden afternoon sunlight danced on the waves of the small lake, a summer breeze wafting the scent of earth and heather around a pair of dwarves walking towards the lake through a grove of alders ringing the water. The elder dwarf's warm eyes rest fondly on the youngster toddling beside him, calloused fingers securely clasped around his son's small hand as he guides him down the path, reflexively checking for any sticks or stones that might trip unwary little feet as he does so. Spotting a feather caught in the grass near their path, the father pauses and plucks it from the ground. Turning, he shows it to Mîm. The toddler's eyes light up, fixed on the azure feather held in his father's fingers.
"Bird!" he proclaims, grinning up at his father. The older dwarf smiles, wrinkles framing his eyes. "No, this is a feather. But birds do have them. Do you know what feathers are good for, Mîm?" The youngster's nose crinkles in thought, his eyes scrutinizing the bright blue quill. After several seconds, he looks at his father, brows furrowed. "..No?" "Tickling!" Mîm's father suddenly leans forward, flicking the tip of feather against Mîm's nose.
Shrieking with delight, Mîm recoils. With a deep laugh, his father pursues him, the feather mercilessly dancing across his face, around his ears, and over his nose. "Stop! No! Stop!" Mim squeals, breathless with laughter, batting futilely at the feather. After several minutes, his father finally relents, their laughter ringing through the hollow even as he does so. Mîm regains his breath after after several moments, and his father hands him feather before scooping him up in arms, setting him on his shoulders as they continue walking towards the lake. Giggling, Mîm buries his free hand in his father's braided hair, gripping tightly, a grin stretching across his face at his newfound height.
Mîm's father follows the path through the trees, pointing out various birds and insects on the way. Arriving at the narrow, pebbly shore, he gently lowers his son from his shoulders. As soon as his shoes are off, Mîm promptly toddles towards the water, firmly announcing "I swim." Immediately, a hand shoots out, halting his progress. "No," his father explains, his eyes serious. "It's too dangerous. But we can walk in the water as long as you hold my hand."
The toddler's lips press together, a storm beginning to brew in his eyes, his feet dragging as his father leads him towards the lake. But the moment his toes touch the cool water, the storm dissipates, swept away with the joy of kicking his feet and watching the water spray into the air and fall back to the lake. Within minutes, he is sitting in the shallow water, soaked from head to toe as he enthusiastically splashes his father, drenching himself as often as not in the process. When he tires of that, Mîm's father produces several small wooden boats from his pockets, and Mîm happily re-enacts riveting tales of the high seas, complete with collisions, shipwrecks, and sea serpents with tentacles suspiciously like his father's fingers. The blue feather, captain of Mîm's ship, survives each danger only to be thrown once more into peril, each time worse than the last, eventually perishing in a dramatic multi-ship collision while battling a monstrous squid.
Several hours later, as evening begins to fall, a gryfalcon circling far above a mountain lake watches as a dwarf walks through the heather away from the hollow below, a young dwarf perched securely on his shoulders with auburn curls bobbing drowsily and gleaming like brightly burnished copper in the setting sun.

In other news, almost every mental health professional I talk to is desperately trying to get me into art programs, it would be hilarious except that I am also at that level of desperation I NEED to make art around other people I NEED to do guided art therapy. Also may be able to get NDIS funding for art courses 🤞🤞🤞
