It takes time, but then Aleksander is used to the idea that everything takes time. His power grows gradually as he drifts in that place between awake and dreaming, aware and distant. He takes the time to think, to think about what he has done, who he has done it to and if he would do it again.

The answer is always yes, yes he would do it again. For his Grisha, for Ravka, for Alina. When he finally awakes he is in a forest, not one he recognizes, but it's Ravka, he'll always know the scent of Ravkan flowers and the shape of her leaves.

Alive. Moving. He feels for the power that lives inside him and feels the pulsing familiarity of shadow and eternity. No headache, no cough. He looks down at his hand, the bone is still there, the scars still present. Still deformed, but no longer dying bit by bit.

When he reaches for his nichevo'ya they do not come. Gone with the Fold perhaps, it doesn't matter. All that matters is he can feel Alina's power in these woods, knows that sensation and follows it.
