On this Milestone Monday we’re acknowledging the 1 day belated birthday of Beach Boy Dennis Wilson who would have been 78. Dennis, the only Beach Boy that ever surfed, died almost 40 years ago. In one of the weirdest instances of irony ever, the cause of death was drowning.

Dennis lived a wild life; he did everything to excess-women, alcohol, and drugs. At one point he married the illegitimate daughter of his cousin Beach Boy Mike Love. He had an association with Charles Manson who moved into Dennis’ house for a time.

Even with all his craziness, he wrote some great songs. “Forever” is one of them.💖

The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Rock [NEW 1978 Edition] - The Beach Boys. Formed 1961 in L.A. by Wilson brothers Carl and Dennis, and compositional genius Brian, from the middle-class district of Hawthorne, CA. They released 11 albums up through 1965. But, slowly however, #thebeachboys and their creative mastermind had begun to drift apart. While group toured world, Brian started hanging out with one #vandykeparks , later to write lyrics, started dropping acid and went thru a period of attempting to disown his musical past. The Wayback Machine lands on Summer 1981: I was flying from San Francisco to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to visit family and friends. While changing planes in Pittsburgh, imagine my surprise to see The Beach Boys entourage (minus Carl Wilson, who wasn’t on that tour) waiting at the gate, headed to Harrisburg for a run-off gig. I conversed with Brian Wilson, Bruce Johnston, Al Jardine, Mike Love, and Dennis Wilson. During the flight, they let me pick their brains about songs, studio craft, songwriting, etc.—my opener was to talk about “Celebrate the News.” Al was very interested in the landscape as we looked out the windows. It occurred to me to compare Appalachia to Big Sur but my mind drifted… 

Years later, back in California, I was demo’ing on the keyboard, thinking I was homesick for my native PA. Out of nowhere the line “I Wanna Be-in Pennsylvania” flew into my head, modeled after tribute songs to American places made by The Beach Boys. The final take was expertly mixed by Rusty Richards (Julie Miller, Brian Wilson) and features guest vocals by Mike Roe (The 77s). Meanwhile, Happy Birthday Al, and thank you for your years of bringing musical joy to the world.

Endless Summer is a compilation album by the Beach Boys, released on June 24, 1974. A collection of hits from the band's 1962–65 period, #endlesssummeralbum was compiled by their old label, #capitolrecords , while #thebeachboys were contracted to Reprise Records. Its unexpected success bore immediate consequences for the band's then-progressive musical direction. It revitalized the band's popularity after years of lukewarm sales, but also inspired nostalgia for the Beach Boys' early surfing and hot rod-themed music, repositioning the group as an oldies act. My copy is a gatefold on their first return to the purple label in the later half of the 70s, Capitol Records - SVBB-11307. Four months after its release, the album reached number 1 in the United States and Canada. It was the group's second chart-topping album in the US and returned them to a level of commercial success they had not experienced there since the mid-1960s.
