“Vision is the art of seeing things invisible”—Jonathan Swift ...SONG OF THE WEEK: “The Sleeping Giant of Love” https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/the-sleeping-giant-of-love-xavier-mix
—This is my twist on Jonathan Swift’s oft-tributed and parodied GULLIVER'S TRAVELS (a political allegory that some say was the first science fiction novel). While sailing on a ship, Lemuel Gulliver is storm-tossed and knocked unconscious, only to awaken as a prisoner on an island populated by eccentric little people. I turned it around so the island is populated by marooned humans who, after a dark and stormy night, find this Giant on the beach. They can’t wake him from his peaceful slumber. Yet they’re compelled to rouse him because they think he has answers, that he might be friendly. They learn that the Giant is a metaphor for what they’ve forgotten about: Love.
Musically I was inspired by David Bowie and Split Enz/Neil Finn (+ imagining Dennis Wilson on drums). My fiance Uma Robin Mackey says it’s one of her favorites! To download and listen go to...
On this Milestone Monday we’re acknowledging the 1 day belated birthday of Beach Boy Dennis Wilson who would have been 78. Dennis, the only Beach Boy that ever surfed, died almost 40 years ago. In one of the weirdest instances of irony ever, the cause of death was drowning.
Dennis lived a wild life; he did everything to excess-women, alcohol, and drugs. At one point he married the illegitimate daughter of his cousin Beach Boy Mike Love. He had an association with Charles Manson who moved into Dennis’ house for a time.
Even with all his craziness, he wrote some great songs. “Forever” is one of them.💖

Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue @musiconvinyl #denniswilson #beachboys #california #pacificoceanblue Sorry I've been away, the world has been on fire and that has been time consuming. Tonight I'm trying to find a place of inner peace by listening to my all time favorite Beach Boys adjacent release, Dennis Wilson's incredible solo album "Pacific Ocean Blue". Dennis' story is sad throughout and all you need is a quick google search, a couple of tall glasses of boxed wine, and you can find yourself in tears when you think about his Californian blend of raw musical talent, endless good intentions, and ultimate sad, raw, untimely death by drowning. He accidentally welcomed the Manson family into the world of starlets and rockstars and never lived it down, hell he almost got killed by them himself. He struggled with all sorts of demons like so many of the most talented artists tend to, but during his relatively short time on this mortal coil, he wrote one of the prettiest albums on our shelves. If you want to dip your toe, my two favorite beginner tracks are "River Song" as it is indicative of the whole Dennis Wilson vibe...kind of a more blue collar-y, down-home smoothed out Beach Boys, and "Moonshine", a classic heartbreak song that doesn't really follow any of the rules of a heartbreak song (and honestly includes some sad, distant whispers of the Beach Boys shtick in the vocal harmonies and background vocals). He had partied so hard by this point that the trademark saccharine sweetness of his voice was now a gravely baritone but it made his telling of a sad story all the more believable. This album is a cult classic and there is a real reason why. Please, if you aren't familiar, give it a go! #vinylrecords #vinylcollectionpost #vinyls #recordcollector #vinyladdict #vinyljunkie #onmyturntable #nowspinning #vinyligclub #vinyllovers #vinylclub #vinylcollective #vinylexams #vinyl #vinylporn #vinylcollector #recordcollection #vinyloftheday #vinylcollection #record #music #vinyllove #vinylcommunity #instavinyl #vinylgram #brianwilson https://www.instagram.com/p/CA_oKgtjVR2/?igshid=15foskxyfbsyu

My lyrics came from dreams I had that were set in the Old West and California. It imagines late night tale-telling around a campfire on the trail, with a father offering sage advice to a son. My Dad was a fan of “cowboy songs” so I’m picking up that thread. I wrote this while I was living in Pennsylvania, on a day I was feeling a tinge of homesickness for California. The song created a metaphor, moving like a fantasy transcontinental train ride. Dreams are like that.
The image shown is a cartoon of Cyrus Dallin’s statue “Appeal to the Great Spirit” (a.k.a. the Brother Records logo used by The Beach Boys). The music and vocal style is inspired by Gerry Rafferty's "Long Way 'Round" and The Beach Boys "Leavin' This Town" (Blondie Chaplin and Carl Wilson for vocalese)--there's a little PET SOUNDS and “Til I Die”-style orchestration in there, too. A Dennis Wilson song is quoted in the second verse. Tim Breon was at the mixing board for this. It’s one of my personal favorite recordings.
Cleaning unused record photos out of my phone: Go West’s biggest US hit, “King of Wishful Thinking,” never had it’s 12” remix released here. After years of wondering what the remix sounded like, I found a European copy on Discogs cheap enough to rationalize ordering it—and found out why: It’s boring. It’s a shame they couldn’t bring back Julian Mendelssohn, who did all those epic-sounding remixes from their first album; no doubt he would have knocked it out of the park.
The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Rock [NEW 1978 Edition] - The Beach Boys. Formed 1961 in L.A. by Wilson brothers Carl and Dennis, and compositional genius Brian, from the middle-class district of Hawthorne, CA. They released 11 albums up through 1965. But, slowly however, #thebeachboys and their creative mastermind had begun to drift apart. While group toured world, Brian started hanging out with one #vandykeparks , later to write lyrics, started dropping acid and went thru a period of attempting to disown his musical past. The masterwork “1) Pet Sounds, pic courtesy of Capitol Records” was, in fact, put together under heavy contractural pressures from Capitol and not at all approved by rest of group when they returned to U.S. On release in 1966, it was received well by critics and by Beach Boys aficionados in U.K. but bombed in the U.S. #rockandroll #surfmusic #californiamusic #brianwilson #carlwilson #denniswilson #aljardine #mikelove https://www.instagram.com/p/CWB65M4rkzL/?utm_medium=tumblr

Such great songs as #funkypretty #sailonsailor #leavingthistown - I so love that the songwriting is a collaboration and does feature great tracks written by Brian Wilson. I actually did see The Beach Boys in Detroit with Brian, Dennis , Carl, Al and Mike at the Olympia with my hip younger sister Deirdre ( it might have been that she had a crush on Dennis…) this album is not only pretty - but funky pretty! Enjoy (at Hollywood Hills) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTyRrewljp5/?utm_medium=tumblr
