hey, i was the orca anon. how you approached it and how you approached the situation was.. really upsetting. i genuinely just wanted to know the reasons behind your design choices and nothing else because i take interest in that, especially as someone who designs characters with a lot of personal thought that i insert into my characters, even for characters that are just adoptables. i tried to state multiple times in the ask i wasnt coming for you in any way and i wasn't trying to say it was bad or to frame you badly, i just wanted to see what influences your designs and what story you want to make with the characters you design - if it was a intentional design choice, and if it wasnt i was just going to be like Okay ! cool. and if it was? okay cool, id like to learn more about it and thats all. genuinely, no harm was meant. i also want to state that i dont support or source peta whatsoever nor was that ever stated in my ask (so please dont put words into my mouth, you do not know where i come with my knowledge whatsoever from that ask alone), my knowledge also comes from studying marine zoology and studies (i cant quote exactly every single source im coming from here, but for example [Matkin, C. Also I had a thought (I am an art teacher so take my thoughts with a whole helluva lot of salt) but wouldn't the best thing for whales in captivity just to be given way bigger enclosures? From what I know about whales, which granted isn't all that much, they mostly spend their time in the open ocean. Plus they are big animals so lots of room makes sense to me. I think just having the room to swim seems like the best option. Again, art teacher not animal behavioralist, but hey...

Hello! This poor ask has been sitting in my inbox since September, but I'm finally trying to clean it out, so thank you for your incredible patience!

I'll start by saying that I absolutely support larger habitats for whales and dolphins in human care. It's safe to say almost all cetacean veterinarians, trainers, and keepers would love to expand their animals' enclosures. I recently was lucky enough to spend a day shadowing a marine mammal vet (at a certain very large, very well-known zoological park housing cetaceans) who shared that they are always advocating for bigger, better habitats for the animals. However, size is not the most important aspect of a well-designed zoo environment. Animals in the wild move mainly in search of food and mates, and when you're a whale in the ocean, those things are constantly on the move, necessitating "swimming hundreds of miles a day" as the adage goes. Cetaceans in human care don't have that problem, so they don't need to travel those vast distances, and those animals given the choice to leave (for example, the US Navy's dolphins) almost always voluntarily return to their enclosures. What is more important than space is enrichment. I'll be using SeaWorld's (in?)famous orca tanks as an example, but the same principles can be applied to all manmade cetacean habitats.

The current SeaWorld orca tanks (seen above) are largely the product of a bygone era. Built in the 1980s, they provide ample space for the animals to move around with ease, but they're mainly static environments. The Underwater Viewing area used to have extensive rockwork, but this was torn out to add an emergency rising floor (some of the rocks have been added back over the years, which can be seen in the picture). Other than those rocks and some water jets, the pools are mostly flat and empty. The trainers spend a lot of time desgining enrichment devices and interacting with the whales in training, exercise, and husbandry sessions since the tanks themselves don't give that much to go on. What was most exciting about SeaWorld's canceled Blue World project was not the expanded size (although that would have been absolutely fantastic) but the enrichment opportunities. Improvements have been slowly made to the existing tanks (like adding live fish), but nothing like what Blue World would've offered.

Now, a lot of the built-in environmental enrichment isn't something guests would automatically recognize, particularly in cetacean habitats. The ocean is mainly a vast, empty desert, so a good enclosure wouldn't be full of colorful coral reefs for onlookers to enjoy, but rather water currents, changing depths, and other adjustments that might not be noticed by laymen but would make a world of difference to the animals in mimicking a natural ocean environment. Keiko's tank at the Oregon State Aquarium (pictured below) had similar features, and it was built in the 1990s on a much smaller budget. Imagine what a company with SeaWorld's resources could do.

However, I understand that these improvements carry risks of their own. All zoos face these challenges, and cetaceans in particular are notoriously destructive. Like ocean labradors, they delight in destroying anything they can get their mouths on, and killer whale-proof enrichment devices are already difficult to come by. There's also the concern that adding a bunch of extra features may stress the animals, such as the sounds and vibrations created by the motors needed to power artifical currents. Then there's the issue of working on tanks still housing animals, which would require squeezing a bunch of huge whales into an even smaller space while the other pools are worked on. Though it wouldn't be an easy process, I believe it's worth it.

But there's good news! Although I don't at all agree with how they acquired their whales, China's Chimelong Ocean Kingdom's under-construction killer whale habitat (concept art below) will be much larger than existing facilites and is planned to feature wave machines, rockwork, and depth variation.

There are long-standing rumors that improvements are coming to SeaWorld's orca tanks, even though the full Blue World project is unlikely to ever be revived with the company phasing out of keeping killer whales. My hope is Chimelong's new habitat will inspire American parks to commit to similar updates. Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park in Florida, one of the oldest dolphinariums in existence, is currently building a brand-new "dolphin oasis" (concept art below) from the ground up, hopefully heralding a new era of modern whale and dolphin habitats.

Hey Gentry, I have more questions about wyvern au : How many divisions are there in chivalry? Are there any specializations? And how is the hierarchy organized?

First, thank you for your question, it was really fun. Second, take everything I will say with a grain of salt because it’s possible I will change things in my fics, especially designations.

There are basically five Orders in the chivalry, and one knight can belong to several orders at once:

The Order of the Red Dragon: the knights who are specialized in handling Fallens, but also blessed criminals and Beasts who can compete with them.

Needless to say, Endeavor is among them and Bakugou want to his member card.

They do not have to kill their targets. They can if they don’t have any other choices, but it’s possible to heal Fallens, so it’s complicated.

(Many draconics scoff at the name and some claims that they should get copyrights for the emblem those knights dare to wear.)

The Order of the Blue Hound: the ones who investigate crimes.

They share this responsibility with the Guard (basically the police) and they shine when nobles are involved. More guards aren’t of high birthed and it really helps to have a blue hound when you investigate, so you don’t meet an unfortunate accident in a splendid manor.

“No, Sir, I never met this Detective Tsukauchi, maybe he got eaten by a feral on his way to my splendid palace who wasn’t bought with illegal profits.”

It also helps because trial by combat is a real thing and if you need some illegal activity to stop right now (especially for corrupted people of power), you want a knight next to you to challenge the suspect, because you can be sure they will choose one hell of a champion to represent them.

Endeavor is also a blue hound, btw.

The Order of the Black Cat: the underground knights.

Think black market, slave trade, contraband, and so on. They have a reputation for being ruthless, and obviously, Aizawa is one of them.

The Order of the Green Wolf: originally, the ones who protect the lands.

Think rescue mission and making sure people are alright. A lot of proximity work, and they are often used as mediators between different groups. They don’t get the respect they deserve. They can handle themselves in a fight, but if a situation arises, their first priority is to identify the threats, see if they can handle it, call for help if they can’t, and protect civilians.

Includes the Wild Wild Pussycats and Thirteen.

The Order of the White Orca: the ones who protect the coast.

Originally, they were supposed to kill any sea monsters (a very large definition) getting too close to the lands until they got more civilized and they have now a very large activity that can be summarized by Being Friends With The Underwater Kingdoms.

Includes Gang Orca (who basically said “MOVE, I’M AN ORCA.” the first time he put a foot in the headquarters) and Selkie.

Why are there different Orders if you can belong to several of them at the same time?

Because, once upon a time, knights were supposed to be able to do all of that. If they were dropped in any situation, they were supposed to handle it without a sweat. But that simply doesn’t work like that, even though all knights are trained in the basics.

First, you specialize because of what you like or what you’re good at. Second, most knights tend to get assigned territories, on which they handle specific threats.

That’s what’s going to bring the Stain conflict. Stain considers that they are too many fake knights nowadays, unable to defend themselves and others against real threats.

What’s the point of the Orders?

Basically, apart from knowing on which door to knock if you want to learn in a specific field, it’s about conflicts of juridiction.

Any knight can butt in any problematic situation, but if several knights want to grab the case, the one affiliated with the right order is the one in charge.

And how is the hierarchy organized?

Baby steps:

First, you are a squire. Despite the name, for your first year, you’re supposed to stay in the academy and be educated, be it in the art of poking someone with a sword, etiquette, horseriding, surviving horrible things trying to eat you, and how not to look absolutely ridiculous in front of important people. At the same time, you will be given quests, little things to help people.

Second year, you start to look for guilds and knights who could bear the sight of you, and you slowly integrate yourself to a guild while you keep being trained by your academy.

Third year, you start to be unleashed on the world.

Technically, you can be a squire outside an academy if you find a knight willing to teach you and be responsible of you for a while.

You become a knight at the end of the three years, after accomplishing your Quest. You must complete your quest alone, and you can absolutely die trying.

Technically, again, if you do something that qualify as your Quest before your three years as a squire are over, you can graduate as a knight pretty young. That’s what happened with Hawks.

This is NOT recommended.

Knight steps:

Knights are a happy family, and they don’t need ranks, they just listen to their elders and are nice to each other, right? And the ranking is just something to know how much you get paid, that’s all.

More seriously, there is this insidious thing where even without clear ranks, you know who is your superior. You know who are the ten most powerful knights. You know who are the thirty most powerful knights too.

And since duels are a very real thing, you know who is more powerful than you or you get your ass handed to you.

Now, there is also the fact that there is a hierarchy in term of family.

Nobles are often descendants of knights who were given a territory to protect after you did many great deeds. To keep being a noble (because you can absolutely lose your title), you need one knight every two generations or to give a very big sum of money to the “Crown”.

Needless to say, if there is a -of the house X attached to your knight name, you’re considered a pretty big deal from the get go.

Do you have any tips for designing a hero costume?

Oh! That’s a really good question! This’ll be fun. I’ll list some of my observations of the hero costumes of MHA and give some examples below, but if any of my more creative followers have any input, do share!

Put an emphasis on the parts of the costume that assist the quirk. Costumes should be useful, not just stylish, and often help the hero use their physiology to the best of their abilities. This is especially useful and important to mutation-type quirks. For example, if you have a water-related quirk, maybe think wet suit-style costume (similar to Tsuyu or Selkie!). Or like Deku, he has arm pads and knee braces/leg guards to reinforce his joints because most of his moves have to do with punching and kicking, and he needs some support for his bones (because, you know, he keeps breaking them). Yaoyorozu has a revealing costume so that she can use as much skin as possible for creating stuff (some fan re-designs of the canon costume keep to that idea without being quite so fan-service-y). Tokoyami has a cloak to keep his body in as much darkness as possible. If you want a simpler example, Shoji’s costume allow his arms to have free movement, but other than that the rest is just his aesthetic choice.

Support gear might make the costume more than the costume itself. Some quirks are a little less visible than others, so they might rely more on accessories that enhance their quirks or skills rather than a costume that helps them adapt. Characters like Kaminari, Jiro, and Present Mic mainly have equipment to help amplify their quirks, while the rest of their costumes can easily be mistaken as really cool punk clothes. Sometimes the equipment might even be the focal point of the costume, like Bakugou’s grenade gauntlets. Heroes whose equipment are their main supports tend to have costumes that are designed around the equipment rather than around their quirk.

Pick an aesthetic and stick to it. It should be a bit obvious, but a cohesive character design has an aesthetic. All Might has an America theme going on. Aoyama is a great example of a character who chose a costume almost purely because of the princely aesthetic. Almost all the characters have an aesthetic that can be boiled down to one word! Uraraka is space/astronaut themed to go with her gravity quirk, Snipe’s aesthetic is literally just “cowboy”, Midnight is “dominatrix”. Iida and his family have a robot/knight thing going on. Best Jeanist speaks for himself. The Wild Wild Pussycats are cats, obviously, but they also have a band uniform appearance. You can go simple with aesthetics too, like Kamui Woods and Eraser Head’s ninja-like all-black costumes, Gang Orca’s elegant and graceful suits for his mafia boss look, or Ojiro’s karate kid aesthetic.

Don’t choose more than THREE (3) colors. This IS NOT a hard rule, but this actually comes from a general design rule I also use in web design and other stuff too. Too many colors can make the costume look too busy, with the only exceptions being possibly black/white as “link” colors (they’re really good as dividers between different costume elements/pieces) and “metal” colors like bronze, silver/iron, and gold (but these colors are purely circumstantial, and should not ALL be used at once just because they’re exceptions–they’re more like accents). If you look at the hero costumes in MHA, you’ll notice that for the most part they do tend to stick to 3 or less colors not including the “metal” color. So let’s break it down: costumes tend to have one or two main colors, one accent color, and one metal color. Deku has green, red accents, and silver metal, with black and white as separate costume pieces. He even still adheres to this in his UA gym uniform, his main colors being blue, red accents, and silver metal, again with separate black/white pieces. Uraraka’s hero costume is black and white with pink accents, and doesn’t have a metal color. Tsuyu is green and black, yellow accents, and white/tan “metal” (that isn’t technically metal). All Might is blue, red, and yellow (and white as dividers to break up the color). And so on.

Keep weather, geography, culture, and other environmental factors in mind. Don’t design a character wearing a tank top when they live in below-freezing temperatures, basically. Again, not a hard rule, but just something that might help you design your character.The environment your character lives in can easily influence what type of costume they might have–that includes environmental factors such as culture. For instance, Yoroi Musha obviously styles himself after the Japanese Samurai of the past, which could be influenced by a heritage related to that. Ryukyu seems to be wearing a qipao, which is a Chinese garment, and she may have chosen that costume because she has some relation to the culture. Even the students change costumes between spring/summer and winter, when it gets cold enough for Bakugou to need long sleeves.

If your character has a secret identity, decide on how you want to hide it. While the MHA world has been really open about hero identities, not all characters choose to forego the mask, like Eraser Head, Snipe, and Ectoplasm. And sometimes hiding your identity is useful or keep you safe, like All Might using a different form when he was getting weaker, and when Izuku and Mirio met Overhaul and Mirio used Izuku’s mask to keep Overhaul from knowing their identities. There are various ways to hide an identity, from a mask to a visor to a helmet. Sometimes even makeup might work.

Put the character’s personality into it. If your character isn’t one to show off or is someone who stays in the shadows, maybe a simpler design and less colors might be more fitting, similar to Aizawa’s Eraser Head costume. If your character wants to show off or knows how to use their appearance to their advantage, then maybe they dress to be able to do that, like Uwabami or Midnight. Or if your character likes magical girl shows or something, maybe their costume is based off a magical girl’s.

I think there’s more tips I could put here but for now these are the ones off the top of my head. Hope they help! If I think of more or my followers think of more, I’ll post them :)

Ax is lucky that Rachel didn’t knock him off hard enough to hurt him. Why do people insist in cutting up Rachel?

Gymnastics club is coming in handy

For someone who only got morphing power at best 2 days ago and has very little practice David is doing pretty good. However he doesn't fucking confirm his kills, but that's probably just the writers needing to keep people alive

Rachel doesn’t know exactly how she feels being designated the one who does the dirty shit

and again, Jake didn't tell teh rest of the team that he'd threatened David previously. Then decided that they'd need to kill him the moment they got evidence that he wasn't loyal to them. Then sent Tobias to spy on the paranoid dude who doesn't trust them and has a golden eagle morph which just wouldn't have gone well if Tobias got caught

Decided to further persue David with no immediate back up. Fought his lion as a tiger (and kept trying to bite the fucker's neck through the mane) and now all the ducks are in a row for Rachel to definately have a reason to murder the fuck out of David

if i had any faith of Jake's planning abilities i'd say this was a very eleborately planned murder or hit

but ya know we're supposed to belive that Jake is actually good at plans and leadership shit so it probably is a very elaborately planned hit

as far as I gather, David is kinda paranoid, a bit of a loner, one of those edgy goth kids. A bit reckless but pretty darn good at strategy. Doesn't like being bossed around, especially not by people he has no reason to trust or like. And also just a natural at shapeshifting.

everything else is unreliable b/c I know the writers are trying to make him satan for their betray plot to not make the Animorphs look so terrible for their actions in comparison.

also another reason the two trap David in morph things don't work for me (rat in the main timeline and fly in the choose yer own book [b/c he dissagreed with the animorphs on being benched while on an alien planet in a fight for all of their lives]) is b/c the animrophs have morphed out of tight spaces like behind a fridge or inside a peice of wood so it doesn't feel like a rat trap or a cup should be able to stop a fucker from demorphing

so Tobias just fucking lost track of David , and didn't think that the dude may have headed to his home and ran into Jake and Ax on the way there. Didn't show up at the mall investigating all the fucking sirens like Rachel and Ax and just happened to be in the right place to save Rachel

Evolution on M’ega could have favored that body type--to me it would make a lot of sense on a world with deeper oceans and maybe a more geologically diverse ocean floor. More rifts and trenches and maybe not as much open expanse of sand, so the streamlined torpedo shape of most of Earth’s ocean creatures wasn’t as singularly favored as this other form--the arms/tentacles/tendrils for manipulating the environment, going after food in deep crevices on an underwater cliffside, or for sifting through sand and silt for food. Probably with a degree of shark-style electrosensory. You’d get tool-using creatures, and light/sound/electricity as communication and for defensive purposes.
