Over 100 Wildfires have ravaged the Arctic since June
The world has crossed the tipping point and Mother Earth is sending a clear message.

Earther added, "the boreal forest that rings the northern portion of the world is witnessing a period of wildfire activity unseen in at least 10,000 years, and this summer is another worrying datapoint.", Common Dreams
Summer and wildfires have become increasingly synonymous for many parts of Canada, but this year's fire focus has shifted further north. 2019 has already seen an unprecedented number of fires north of the Arctic Circle, both in North America and Eurasia in the wake of what was, globally, the hottest June on record, and what will likely be the hottest July.
Through June and the first half of July, the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), part of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, has tracked more than 100 major fires north of the Arctic Circle.

Hopefully James' Super Powers are temporary.
After seeing the latest preview for Supergirl I'm really hoping this boring storyline of James getting Super powers doesn't go on for long, fine let him keep them to help defeat the big bad of this season but then let Lena and Brainy figure out an antidote. Personally I'd rather see him get the antidote before any of the fighting and the focus be on the PTSD but that's unlikely to happen or what was the point in him getting them in the first place?. An antidote will probably have to be in the works anyway otherwise you'd be left with a permanently super powered Lex Luthor and the only real way to defeat him would be to kill him some how.
I wish they could have just kept James' story confined to his PTSD. The superpowers over shadows it now. Call me shallow (i don't care) but I'm not the only one who will be paying more attention to how his powers go down rather than his trauma. That's because you can't really mix the two without one coming out on top especially in a show about super heroes with powers. That ONE episode that dealt with Kara and her claustrophobia was good because it focused on her trauma, her super powers were/are always there so they arent always the focus.
This whole storyline feels like they got lost on what to do with James but realised he was still there and needed a purpose. They made him CEO of Cat Co probably because Calista left and Cat Co was still going to be in the picture and they needed someone the audience knew to run it and it couldn't be Kara. But he didn't do anything really journalistic other than being at Cat Co until he stupidly got involved with the COL and any really journalistic jobs he had he ignored and made Kara do.
They made him Guardian and had the whole keeping it a secret from Kara for a few episodes only to forget he was Guardian at all until the plot called for it and even then he felt squashed in at the last minute; 'oh yeah we forget about James again! Quick let him pop us as Guardian for a scene that will fill the James quota needed'.
Then because everyone has to have a love interest and there can't be a character without someone to complete them (save Cat!) They threw him and Lena together with absolutely no build up at all. Something that just didn't work. Lena didn't need anyone to complete her and quite frankly neither did James. This is why I'm happy Kara is single and I hope she stays that way. (I would die of happiness if Supercorp happened but lets face it that is unlikely).
Now because having James as CEO of Cat Co didn't work and having him as Guardian didn't work either (since the writers themselves forget that storyline quite often) they put him with Lena bringing him more into the spotlight since he had taken a back seat and Lena was focused on and was actually relevant to the storyline. That didn't really work either so now they think giving him super powers is the next logical step. He wasn't received well as a non super powered hero so let's give him super powers that will make people like him more.
The best thing the writers did with James in the last few seasons was his relationship with Marcus and when he picked up his camera again.
James didn't need to become a super hero. His strengths were being there for Kara and Clark and his photography skills, also his friendship with Winn. All of these unnecessary story lines that make no sense are just boring and I'm not invested in them at all. It's gotten to the point that when James is on screen that's when i zone out because his storylines aren't compelling at all. In fact even the writers seem to have realised Guardian was a horrible idea because they had it written into the show that he would go to prison if he did that again.
His recent PTSD story line and his relationship with Kelly has me watching again. Here is something that is interesting! But they've tainted it by adding Super powers which as I mentioned before will take centre stage because this is a super hero show. I get that he had to have the Harun El and he has to get powers because everyone else who took it has but they could have gone with a PTSD story that didn't involve the Harun El. I feel the super powers has cheapened the storyline.
Anyway that was a lot. It's a statement to how poorly James hae been written that his sister has been in two episodes and I'm already far more invested and interested in her than I have ever been in him.
When this is all done they should remove the powers and have James give up this ludicrous idea of being a super hero. Have him actually running Cat Co doing things we can see and picking up his camera again. Also please don't put him back with Lena, it didn't work and they are both better off single. Plus James was awful and disrespectful to her. (He was, but I wont argue with those who think he wasn't so save your words) I never cared for James to begin with but they made him a real ass when he was with Lena.
Give James a decent journalist storyline that doesnt involve a desperate need to be relevant, a horrible love story or anything to do with him being 'super' reel in his ego a bit as well. I know Lena and Kara have big egos to but they actually do relevant things that gives them reasons to have big egos. Remove James from the show and you still have a show and every thing can still happen.
Kara managed to realize last episode that the pen is mighter than the cape sometimes, let James realize that the camera can be mightier than a tin suit!

Looking Ahead: Jared McCann Loving Life In Pittsburgh
All fantasy owners need help in the short term AND the long term. The Looking Ahead feature identifies one player to plug into lineups in the short term, a second to invest in for the long term, a third to bench for the coming week, and a fourth who will struggle to meet expectations for some time. All players discussed are selected based on their upcoming schedule.
Most stats updated through Thursday, March 7th
The Immediate Fix (Grab this guy and use him for the next several days)
Jared McCann, C, Pittsburgh Penguins (Available in 95 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – Pittsburgh wasn’t listed in the Love ‘Em section this week (spoiler alert!) although they have a fantastic schedule, and McCann should be able to take advantage of his newfound role over the next couple weeks. That newfound role for those not in the know is the top line wing alongside Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel, although he doesn’t collect any power play time (yet).
McCann has been in that spot for the past three games now and has picked up 1G-3A in those games, with seven shots and a +6. He’s played at least 16 minutes in all three games – a huge bump from the 12 minutes he was getting in a third-line role – and has seen in increase in his peripherals: +0.3 shots/game and +0.4 blks & hits/game. The only downside to McCann’s new role is he’s no longer taking faceoffs, so those in faceoff leagues should tread carefully as he’s still listed as a centre. Beyond that, grab him and reap the rewards until he gets bumped back down.
The Building Block (Buy now, sit back and enjoy the production)
Jakub Vrana, W, Washington Capitals (Available in a nice 69 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – He’s had a fairly inconsistent season, but Vrana’s really solidified his role as a second-line winger and contributor on the second power-play unit for Washington, which is a role rife for production; his average time on ice is relatively low at only 14:12/game, but on the season Vrana has put up 19G-22A (1G/3A on the PP) and has fired 131 shots on goal through his 67 games.
Nobody should expect Vrana to suddenly jump up to 19 minutes/game through the end of the season, but his rate stats are fantastic: of qualified forwards (500+ minutes) at 5v5, Vrana sits 15th with 1.27 Goals/60 and 80th with 1.2 Assists/60, ranking 32nd overall in Points/60. That would reasonably project for an additional 8-9 points over the Caps’ remaining 15 games, but Vrana is also wielding a hot stick these days with 1G-3A in his past five games, so that projection is more of a floor. This late in the season at that ownership and with the Caps’ remaining schedule, he’s a strong consideration for a pickup.
The Odd Man Out (His short-term value is cause for concern)
T.J. Brodie, D, Calgary Flames (Owned in 32 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – Brodie has been a top-pair defenseman with Mark Giordano for the past season and a half and before that reaped the benefits of playing with Dougie Hamilton; he’s cleared 30 points every season for the past six, averages 22:52/game for his career, and plays on a current division leader – so why worry?
  *dramatic pause*
  Rasmus Andersson.
In Brodie’s past five games, he’s seen ice time of 18:33, 22:46, 19:55, 20:32 and 18:06 – four of those well below his career average, but also below his season average of 21:42. He’s lost his top pairing role in three of those five games, with Andersson slipping onto the top pair, and Brodie has also ceded the point on the second power-play unit to Rasmus.
There’s not much in the way of point production to be expected from Brodie, which is why he’s only 32% owned in the first place, but in the 15 games since February 1st (when Andersson started playing more), Brodie has put up only six points which is a significant drop off his average leading up to that mark.
The Anchors (They’ll do nothing but disappoint even over the long haul)
James van Riemsdyk, W, Philadelphia Flyers (Owned in 52 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – A real disappointment for the bulk of the season, JvR has put up 19G-16A in 51 games and has stopped producing in the peripheral categories: 2.27 SOG/game this year compared to the 3.1/game he averaged in Toronto and 0.58 combined Hits & Blks/game compared to the 1.3/game as a Leaf.
A large part of the disappointing production from JvR this season is the team around him, as he’s carried over the third-line winger/top power play net-front guy role that he had in Toronto, but he’s playing with players like Scott Laughton and Michael Raffl rather than Nazem Kadri and Patrick Marleau. The biggest concern with van Riemsdyk is that he’s shooting a career-high 16.4%, a full 4.6% higher than his career average, and taking so few shots.
There may be some points in the very near future coming from JvR due to injuries on the Flyers, but as soon as Jakub Voracek returns, van Riemsdyk will slide back into the depths of mediocrity and poor production from whence he came. Drop him soon if not immediately.
Love ‘Em (These squads are sure to pay dividends in the coming days)
Toronto – The Maple Leafs lead the way this week, with seven games upcoming between March 8th and 20th. Not only do they have a great schedule by getting the most games possible, but they get to play some defensive tire fires in Edmonton, Chicago, Philadelphia, Ottawa and Buffalo with their two remaining games coming against Nashville and Tampa Bay. They’ve scored five or more in five of their past ten games, and are loaded with fantasy studs – stock up.
Washington – Like the Leafs, the Caps have a loaded schedule, with seven games in the period; unfortunately their seven games aren’t as enticing as Toronto’s, but the Caps will get to play against the Devils (twice!), Flyers and Pens, as well as the the Jets and Lightning (also twice!) Only three of their games come at home, but they should be filling nets for most of March.
Arizona – Christian Dvorak is back, Vinnie Hinostroza is the hottest player on Earth, and the Coyotes are almost in a playoff position even with all the injuries they’ve suffered this season – absolutely wild to think about. In their past five games they’ve scored 17 times and have won four of five, and their upcoming schedule is both packed (six games) and has great matchups (Kings, Hawks, Ducks, Oilers, Lightning as well as the Blues.)
Leave ‘Em (These squads will leave fantasy owners sorely disappointed in the short term)
Los Angeles – They’re essentially irrelevant from a fantasy perspective at this point in the season anyway, but the Kings’ schedule doesn’t help them any: the Kings play only five times between March 8th and 20th, including tough matchups against Arizona, Nashville and Winnipeg (as well as matches vs. the Ducks and Panthers.)
Colorado – The Avs went back to a loaded top line/three non-scoring lines which hurt their fantasy appeal outside of the big 3, and like the Kings have a short schedule with only five games in this period. On the plus side, four of the five games Colorado play will be at home, and they face some soft competition in Anaheim, Buffalo and the Binghamton New Jersey Devils. Their other two games are against Carolina and Minnesota, with the game against the Wild coming on the road.
Montreal – The start of Montreal’s next stretch comes in the worst way, with the second half of a road back-to-back (against Anaheim) kicking off their period. Because the Habs’ California road trip comes to an end Friday night, Montreal has a few extra days off this week, not playing again until the 12th (at home vs. Detroit.) They only have three games beyond that, playing the Islanders, Blackhawks and Flyers.

6th September >> Daily Reflection on Today's First Reading (Colossians  1:1-8) for Roman Catholics on Wednesday of the Twenty-Second Week in Ordinary Time
Commentary on Colossians  1:1-8 Today we begin reading from Paul’s letter to the Christians in the city of Colossae, on the west coast of what is now Turkey. The letters to the Christians of Ephesus and Colossae (both in the Roman Province of Asia, now part of western Turkey) and the letter to Philemon are all closely related. All three were written while Paul was under arrest in Rome. Several hundred years before Paul’s day, Colossae had been a leading city in Asia Minor. It was located on the Lycus River and on the great east-west trade route leading from Ephesus on the Aegean to the Euphrates River. By the first century AD (when this Letter was written) Colossae was diminished to a second-rate market town and had been surpassed long ago in power and importance by the neighbouring towns of Laodicea and Hierapolis, both of which are cited in the Letter (see Col 4:13). What gave Colossae importance in New Testament terms, however, was the fact that, during Paul’s three-year ministry in Ephesus, Epaphras had been converted and had carried the Gospel to Colossae. The young church that resulted then became the target of heretical attack, which led to Epaphras’s visit to Paul in Rome and ultimately to the writing of the Colossian letter. The danger at Colossae was due to basically Jewish speculations the Christians had taken up about the heavenly or cosmic powers. These were the powers thought to be responsible for the regular movement of the cosmos, and the speculations about them, much influenced by hellenistic philosophy, attached an importance to these powers that threatened the supremacy of Christ. Paul’s point is not to deny these powers but to show that Christos Kyrios (), Christ the Lord, has established a new order of things and he now governs the cosmos. Paul’s purpose is to refute this Colossian heresy. To accomplish this goal, he exalts Christ as the very image of God (1:15), the Creator (1:16), the pre-existent Sustainer of all things (1:17), the Head of the church (1:18), the First to be resurrected (1:18), the Fullness of deity in body form (1:19; 2:9) and the Reconciler (1:20-22). Christ is completely adequate. We “have been given fullness in Christ” (2:10). (Notes edited from Jerusalem Bible and New International Version Study Bible) It is a relatively short letter and contains much material also found in the longer letter to the Ephesians. Following the custom of putting the writer’s name at the beginning of a letter, Paul introduces himself as an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and his fellow-evangeliser, Timothy. Right from the opening words he reveals how Christ-centred he is. In this relatively short letter, he uses the title ‘Christ’ 26 times and the title ‘Lord’ (referring to Christ) 7 times. Timothy is also mentioned in 2 Corinthians, Philippians, 1 and 2 Thessalonians and Philemon, but Paul is really the sole author of the letter, as indicated by his constant use of ‘I’. In fact, at the end of the letter he says it has been penned in his own hand (4:18). The letter is addressed to “God’s holy people in Colossae, our faithful brothers in Christ” wishing them grace and peace from God, the Father of all. Paul frequently calls the members of Christian communities the ‘holy ones’. It is a term which includes the Old Testament idea of the people of God but here also expresses a relationship with Christ. They have been called by God to union with Christ and have experienced the spiritual benefits of this union. The awareness of it helps them to be “faithful brothers in Christ” i.e., dedicated to working together on the tasks implied in their calling. And Paul mentions their spiritual union “in Christ” no less than 13 times in the course of the Letter. Following the opening greeting there is an expression of thanksgiving and a prayer which forms the rest of the reading and will be continued in tomorrow’s reading. Recalling his prayers for them and the deeply satisfying account of them he has received, Paul congratulates the Colossians upon their acceptance of Christ and their faithful efforts to live his gospel. For their encouragement he mentions the success of the gospel in other places, and assures them that his knowledge of their community is accurate since he has been in personal contact with Epaphras, their presumed founder. “We give thanks for you to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, continually in our prayers ever since we heard about your faith in Christ Jesus and that love that you show towards all God’s holy people, because of the hope that is stored up for you in heaven.” Every one of Paul’s letters, except that to the Galatians, begins with thanks or praise. The possible reason for Galatians being an exception is that Paul was quite disturbed by developments there. In Colossians thanks is an important theme, repeated a number of times. The Letters, too, do not thank humans for their faith and love but rather God, who is the source of these virtues. And, although Paul usually begins with words of thanks and praise, the words of concern or criticism will usually follow later on. We might note also that thanks is given for the manifestations of faith, hope and love that the Colossians so clearly display. The three great Christian virtues of faith, love and hope appear also in Romans, 1 Corinthians, Galatians, 1 Thessalonians and Hebrews. And that hope of a future life without end has come to them through “the word of truth”, the Gospel and has come to them in the same way that it is producing fruit and growing all over the world. This Christian hope is not mere wishful thinking but based on firm assurances that what is believed will be realised. “All over the world” – even if we mean the known world of the Mediterranean, is still somewhat of an exaggeration. But it does dramatise the rapid and remarkable spread and acceptance of the Gospel into nearly every corner of the Roman Empire within 30 years of Pentecost. In refuting the charge of the false teachers, Paul will insist that the Christian faith is not merely confined to Colossae or the region but is ‘worldwide’. Paul knew that because he travelled so much but many of those he is writing to would have very little contact outside their own immediate environment. And their strong Christian faith is something they learnt from Epaphras, “our very dear fellow-worker and a trustworthy deputy for us as Christ’s servant”. And it was he who also told Paul about their love in the Spirit. Epaphras was a native and probably the founder of the Colossian church but also evangelised in the nearby towns of Laodicea and Hierapolis. (The Book of Revelation has some hard words for the Christians of Laodicea.) Paul was clearly fond of him and admired him, calling him a “fellow prisoner” (Philemon 23), his dear fellow servant and a faithful minister of Christ. Epaphras was the one who told Paul at Rome about problems in the Colossian church and thereby stimulated him to write this letter. His name, a shortened form of Epaphroditus (from ‘Aphrodite’, the Greek goddess of love), suggests he was a convert from paganism. He is not the Epaphroditus mention in the Letter to the Philippians. Let us today give thanks for the faith we have received and also to those through whom we have received it and who have helped to enrich over the years. We might also consider how many people’s faith has been enriched by their coming in contact with us and how much more we could do in this regard.
