Polls.

Not Poles.

Would you believe that I have been learning this language for nearly nineteen years? That it’s what my brain is built on? That I read and write all the time and still can’t spell basic words?

The spelling doesn’t even make any sense. Like there’s two ‘L’s and suddenly that makes it so the ‘o’ sound changes? Like that doesn’t happen with dolls. And I know it’s because those two words were probably taken from two different languages but still, what the fuck? Pole is like that because the ‘e’ on the end affects the vowel, and that’s a rule that makes sense. Sometimes. Most of the time kinda. And like okay, I know that pole is about like the North Pole and stuff that’s like related to the specific use of that term. Science shit. And polls has a different meaning because it’s about polls. But still in my head polls should be pronounced like ‘pauls’. But like slightly different. For whatever reason that may be.

At this point I should just try to learn pieces of like twenty other languages just to try and understand the roots of English to spell things correctly.

#everyday I go on tumblr and embarrass myself #I’ve never been able to spell things right and I’d like to stop trying #even fucking French makes more sense than this #like sure you don’t say half the word #but the stuff in the word itself that you say and don’t say generally follows the same rules #like don’t pronounce h’s #and j’s have a jhhhhhh sound instead a juh #and I was only in French classes for three years and never had an actual teacher #and it still makes more sense than English #a couple years ago I was learning Japanese halfheartedly on duolingo #and holy shit the characters actually had rules #and they all followed the same thing and pattern #and it was beautiful #english will just absorb random phrases from other languages and call it a day #adios has just always been in my head and that is straight up Spanish #and ce la vi (no idea how to spell it it’s French. can only kinda pronounce French) #ce l’vie #cę la vie #yeah no idea #it’s got rules that make sense but fuck if I know them #English is way easier to speak than to write #I should have a tag that’s me complaining so people can block it #uhh #personal #I think that works
