I can imagine people scoffing now about the second point. My good friend, who maintains regular contact with her doctors and who is following all medical advice, has gestational diabetes. Jon Moxley

I haven’t blogged about wrestling whole-heartedly since 2011. Eight years. The last time I blogged about wrestling (on my old page) was June 29, 2011 - two days after the infamous Pipebomb speech. I marked the fuck out. And then everything went to shit, Punk eventually left and I stopped watching wrestling for a very long time.

Recently I’ve gotten back into watching wrestling. Sparked by going to a ton of local indie shows. I wasn’t paying close attention to the weekly TV shows, but I’d read articles and keep up with some news on Twitter. Then, Summerslam was announced in Toronto for 2019 and I got back into it hard. Not as hard as I was into it pre-2011, but hard enough that I was watching anything from TV that I could get my eyeballs on. I’ve been consuming it recently as a general fan of the “sport,” not the enormous mark I was pre-2011. And it’s been nice. I can’t say I really have a favourite current wrestler, so I don’t have a ton of specific things to be excited about, but it’s nice to be excited about wrestling as a whole instead of fixating.

But on Wednesday morning, I marked the fuck out. Dean Ambrose, who had tweeted, what, once? his entire time in WWE had changed his Twitter to Jon Moxley and dropped this video. I was a big fan of Jon Moxley before he came to WWE and super excited when he signed with WWE... and then Dean Ambrose debuted and I was pretty disappointed. I wanted to enjoy the character, but I did not. I missed Jon Moxley. And the fact that they paired him with Tyler Black Seth Rollins who debuted around the same time just made it less interesting for me since I was not a fan of his in the indies and didn't care that he had signed to WWE. So yeah, to see that Jon Moxley was back: I marked out. I marked out enough that I decided I needed to blog about it. Everyone's been talking about it and I have thoughts. Thoughts that can't be contained to a 140 240? retweet reply on Twitter. So here returns the wrestling blogging (no guarantees this'll be a regular thing, though, folks. I'm super bad with follow-through/upkeep).

The big question about the video is - what does it mean? As much as I want to just enjoy it in an isolated sense for what it is and not think about what it implies, one has to ask what it means. It's a great video on its own no matter where Moxley ends up, but fans want answers. Other talk about the video revolves around the imagery therein. The building from which Jon escapes, the scenery around him, etc.

Let's start with that second part - the imagery. Most of the comments on Twitter describe the building as the prison from which Dean is escaping and then point the finger at that prison being WWE (since it has been known to be pretty oppressive to its Superstars). Maybe. But the first thing I thought of when I saw it was that he was escaping the Ambrose asylum... because he's not that character anymore. Sure, they could have made it look more like a hospital, but I think the image still works with the way it's styled. It felt very much like Arkham asylum to me in that video - which was both a prison and an asylum, no?

We also see Dean breaking down walls - did he do that in WWE? Sure, a lot of new Superstars have. But who else do we associate that phrase with? Jericho. Keep that in mind for when I address the "where is he going?" question.

There's also the "Big Dog" chasing him out of the asylum. An easy reference to Reigns. But is he chasing him away, or is he chasing him to try to get him not to leave? At Dean's final Raw taping, the SHEILD came out after the cameras were off to say goodbye/thank you, and the crowd chanted "please don't go." Seth replied, "I already tried that." Seth - not Roman. Now, I'm not saying Roman didn't try to get Dean not to leave, but canon doesn't really sway in that favour. I think we are seeing Roman chasing Dean away. In the sense that maybe Roman got the push that Dean always wanted and Roman's success is what drove Dean to leave the Asylum.

The final image being talked about is the dice painted on the wall in the background of one shot. A 2 and a 5, the date of the next AEW event. But above the dice, it says VIPER, a name most commonly associated with Randy Orton (unless there's an indie viper reference I'm missing). So the message there is mixed. Is this one a reference to AEW or is the 25 a coincidence and it's actually a reference to WWE with the word "VIPER"? I haven't quite sorted this one out. I feel like VIPER being a WWE reference is maybe a little flimsy. Not too sure.

Now, let's address the question of "WHAT DOES IT MEAN, THOUGH!?" So, Dean Ambrose is no more. The new character is Jon Moxley, and given the hardcore imagery, it's a return to the old Jon Moxley. So where does Jon Moxley end up? Is this a promo video for a new WWE iteration of Dean Ambrose under his old name? Is this his announcement that he's signed with AEW? Is Jon Moxley returning to his CZW home? Or, is he going somewhere else entirely?

LIKE HONESTLY IT DOESN'T MATTER JUST ENJOY HOW GREAT A PROMO IT WAS AND ENJOY ALL WRESTLING. But OK, we're still all speculating and still want answers.

There's an argument he could be staying with WWE. They've reinvented characters a ton of times - sometimes they keep their old names (most recently, Bray) and sometimes they don't (another recent example: EC3). The production quality is high enough that it could be a WWE video. There are enough WWE references that it could be a WWE stay: The Big Dog, the Asylum, break the walls down, showing the old character of Dean Ambrose himself. But while the quality is up there, I don't think the tone/theme really screams WWE, unless they have a new production/creative team doing these videos, which is entirely possible. Moreover, Renee Young is staying on WWE... she hasn't left. I'd say she has no real reason to leave. I mean, AJ didn't leave immediately when Punk did and perhaps her best run was even after Punk left.

The other main consensus is that he's going to AEW. The breaking the walls down imagery could be a reference to Jericho, as mentioned above - who is a huge frontrunner for AEW. The dice show 25 which, again, is the date of the next big AEW show. AEW has a huge Twitter presence, a ton of their promo videos drop on Twitter. It's the platform for them right now. WWE has been trying to have a bigger presence on Twitter as far as Superstars sending tweets to strengthen feuds, but this feels different - this isn't something WWE has done before (again, could be a new team). Other wrestlers who are rumoured to be joining AEW have responded on Twitter to the video, too - in ways that could be considered calling out Jon to start a new feud at their new fed. The example I saw was Joey Ryan saying something to the effect of "I've taken a barbed-wire bat to the dick, what else you got?" Or maybe that's my own wishful thinking because I'd love to see a Ryan/Moxley feud since they're two of my faves.

And lastly, maybe Moxley is going home to CZW or even going elsewhere. It just doesn't feel like this is another company's doing. Maybe I'm being prejudice but I don't think any other companies would have the budget to do something that high quality (or maybe I'm just bad at judging the quality of videos lol). Maybe Impact? But this doesn't feel like the way they promote new characters. This feels big. I don't think there's anywhere other than AEW or WWE that's as big at this moment. But then again, it could be an up and coming competitor who's using this as a launching board to get big.

I'm firmly in the camp of being excited regardless of where he ends up. I still want answers, but when that music hits and he pops out on the ramp I'm gonna mark regardless of what show's name is on that ring apron.

FTWD 4x16: Analysis

So, who watched the finale of FTWD? I really liked it, even though it ended differently than I thought it would. But I’ll get to that in a minute. Let’s get to all the awesome parallels and symbols.

***As always, spoilers abound for FTWD 4x16. Don’t read until you’ve watched!***

So, we had Al escape the hospital at the beginning. I first want to say that it struck me as a possible parallel to how Madison survived. All was surrounded by a horde of walkers, coming at her from all sides, and she just kept looking around until she found a means of escape. In this case, a gated alley. I was just thinking that there were tons of chairs, doors, passages, and steps in that stadium, so something very similar could have happened with Madison.

Beyond that, Al left the HOSPITAL in a POLICE CRUISER. Really? Once again, the parallels are so close, it’s ridiculous. Remember that Emily was seen driving a police cruiser (one of the Grady cop cars) out of the hospital. That’s part of the footage they shot in S5 that we’ve never seen. So we’re relative sure that when she leaves Grady for good, it will be in a police car. Now we have Al doing the same here. I’ll leave analysis of the squad car’s license plate for @wdway, who’s the master at that.

In the opening credits, we see a lot of water and what I thought was a hospital in the background. By the end of the episode, we realize it’s not the hospital. It’s the denim factory where they’re setting up shop.

The group finds Al—oh, she’d passed out from being hit in the head, btw—and are deciding to get on the road to Virginia the next day.

When Al woke up, they even did a close up shot of her eyes fluttering open, just like they did with Beth at Grady.

They actually use the phrase, “we hit the road at dawn.” (New Dawn Theory).

Morgan decides he wants to go find Martha and try to save her. He promises he’ll meet them at Alexandria, but John says they’ll wait for him at the truck stop, and Morgan says he’ll be there. I made note of these statements because they’re dialogue foreshadows. Morgan promised he would get back to the truck stop…and he did. Dialogue foreshadow fulfilled. Because of that, it’s also very important that they first talked about meeting in Alexandria. They could have just left that bit out and decided to meet at the truck stop, you know? I’ll come back to that.

I loved when John said to June, “It doesn’t take a whole day to recognize sunshine.” Not only was it sweet and romantic, the sun is definitely a Bethyl theme. They said on TTD that Garrett Dillihunt actually wrote/improvised the line. When they said that, the entire audience “awwwwed.”

Then comes the next major round of parallels. He finds Jim in the back seat of the police cruiser.

Think about that. Jim is a dude who died back at the hospital, but of course reanimated as a walker. Then Morgan finds him in the back of a Grady-like police car. That’s pretty much what I’ve ALWAYS thought happened with Beth: that Morgan found her and took her back to Grady. To extend the metaphor, he finds an injured Martha and takes her (or starts to) take her to where she can get medical treatment.

Then we have the antifreeze stuff at the truck stop. This was GREAT! I still haven’t done a coolant post, though I reblogged @frangipanilove’s post that talks about it.

So the antifreeze first caught my eye. Then we find out that Martha put antifreeze in the water, poisoning them. (I talked a little about the poisoned water theme HERE.) And THEN it turns out that the antidote for the antifreeze poisoning is ethanol, or just an alcoholic beverage. Guys, this is a perfect example of the Daryl = Fire, Beth = Water theme. The coolant represents water, and the thing that levels out its negative affects is alcohol. Which burns. Which Beth and Daryl used to burn the moonshine shack. I love it!

Martha purposely gets herself bitten so that Morgan can’t save her. Yeah, that woman is crazy. He ends up handcuffing her to the car so that when she turns, she can’t go off and bite people. That caught my eye at first because cuffing her by one hand is a parallel to Merle in S1 on the rooftop, as well as to the empty handcuff Daryl found in S8.

Then, when Morgan goes back after rescuing the others, he finds that her arm has ripped off. Can we all say Merle? Okay, he purposely cut his arm off because he was trying to stay alive, where she died and her arm got ripped off because she was a walker, but still. The parallel is there.

We see Morgan on a bridge briefly. He gets Jim’s Augie’s Ale truck and saves the day. I thought that was interesting because Jim saved them twice. Even though he died, and wasn’t on the show long, he had a huge impact on the plot.

Near the end, Luciana says, “I get it.” Beth line.

We also saw Morgan go into the bathroom to wash Martha’s words off his forehead. They talked on TTD about how it was symbolic of him finally becoming “unstuck” from his way of thinking. He’s finally free of his psychological barriers and can move forward in a positive way.

I think that works well with the bathroom/toilet paper theory because the bathroom stuff often has to do with escaping prisons. This was just a psychological, rather than physical prison.

Martha is buried. Once again, everyone gets a burial except Beth.

Morgan did find his way back to people, so as I talked about before, that dialogue foreshadow (which came from Rick, btw) came true.

In terms of the plot, they didn’t head to VA at the end. Rather, they decide to stay and set up shop where they are.

Now, that does explain the fact that they’ve already green-lighted a 5th season. And I almost seems like maybe Morgan won’t go back to Alexandria, but I think he will. Eventually. Remember what I said earlier about how they talked about meeting in Alexandria. I think that was a foreshadow and it just may take a few seasons to actually happen. I did enjoy this episode, though. It ended on a hopeful not.

TTD was kind of interesting.

I don’t have a lot to say in terms of the episode of specifically TD stuff, but there were still some interesting things.

First, Gimple clarified his job. He said a lot of people think he lost his job, and that’s definitely true (that people think that, I mean). I can’t tell you how many people were happy he was “fired” and claimed AMC got rid of him because he killed off Carl, lol. It’s an absurd claim anyway, but they simply wouldn’t listen to reason. So I’m glad Gimple clarified that he actually has been promoted. He works on both shows and also other aspects of the TWD universe.

Plus, he teased that something else big is coming soon. Hmm.

The only other thing I found interesting was that he was talking about how they (the writers) are purposely vague when they’re on TTD and when they give interviews and such. He made the joke that he’d just heard the FTWD show runner be very vague and was so proud of him, lol. (Btw, the thing he was vague about was whether or not we’ll see more of Al’s interview tapes, so obviously we will.) REFLECTIONS/ƧИOITƆƎ⅃ꟻƎЯ

The Community Fieldwork Block 1

When you think about your most important life experiences, there are a few memories or events that stick out and immediately draw your attention to them and of course as we grow so too do these memories – they change and progress. After 4 weeks in the community block I can with utmost surety confirm that this experience will form part of my ‘core’ memories. During this block I experienced extreme highs as well as devastating lows, both experiences serving as learning opportunities for me as an OT as well as for me as a person. The community block has been far from a walk in the park, it’s been challenging, it’s been nerve wracking, and it’s been very stressful…a few weeks ago I would have ended the sentence at that point but at this time in the block I am able to say that even though it’s been difficult, I was able to build up the determination and resilience to get through the ‘hard’ parts and am at a place where I can say that I thoroughly enjoy and appreciate the experience I am having on this block.

As per my previous blogs I have explained the changes and effects which this block has had on my OT practice, my positionality and the goals which I intended to work towards in the community. I would now like to further elaborate on some of the most important personal and professional lessons which this block has taught me. Going into this block was a whole new experience for me as a person – I had only had experience with hospital patients who were ‘handed’ to me, and I also always had a supervisor who sort of held my hand throughout the whole block and was always there to check on what I was doing and monitor my progress. In this block, I had neither of these privileges, I had to rely on daily health promotional talks in order to get individual clients and go to schools, creches and the old age home to advocate for OT and run groups involving participants from these areas. I was also given immense responsibility by not having a supervisor looking over my shoulder every day, I found this to be most challenging at first as I was used to having someone instruct me on the finer details of my practice as well as provide me with daily feedback. I was pushed to learn a ton of responsibility and to take accountability for my own learning experiences and my own actions.

Taking accountability and responsibility is a lesson thought best by the community block, it is also a lesson which will equip you to take on and manage so much better with the rest of the fieldwork blocks. This lesson and experience do not only apply to the fieldwork blocks, but it is also a life lesson which will become extremely important and relevant when you are in the working world, and you are solely liable for yourself. It ties into ethics and professionality and overall being a good person who is reliable and initiates OT practice to the best of their ability.

Another lesson specific to the community block which I have learn is that everyone may come from the same community or may have the same background, but each person is so different. In Inanda the people are part of the high substance abuse statistics, the high sexual assault statistics, the high unemployment rate statistics and the low-income rate statistics. Now, this may be true, but the people of the community are so much more than these statistics – once you are in the community you are able to see the beauty of it, the diversity, the ubuntu and the way the people are there for each other and there for you when you are in their community. This also ties in with being mindful of your positionality and not viewing the community in the light reflected by only things you have heard about it.

The community of Inanda is a very welcoming group of people – they respect and appreciate that you are there to assist them and they try to do all in their power to assist you and make experiences easier for you. It is then your part as an outsider to the community to learn the traditions, ways and language of the community. I have witnessed first-hand how happy and seen a person can feel when you as an English speaker greet them or talk to them in their home language of Isizulu.

A professional and personal lesson which I have learnt is to keep your emotions in check. A personal fact is that I have been brought to tears multiple times during the past 4 weeks, these incidents were due to interactions with clients who had experiences that were so traumatic and which I had never dealt with as well as experiences with my superiors. I quickly realised that dwelling on the past and letting your emotions get to you or taking things too personally was just a waste of time and energy which you could spend growing and learning. It is okay to have these emotions but what matters is that you deal with them in a healthy way and to keep them under control especially when expressing yourself to a superior.

It is also important to acknowledge the fact that the world is an unequal and unjust place, and however hard we try we aren’t going to change that in just a few weeks. The community block is about addressing worldly issues which we would not have the chance to do in a hospital setting – we are exposed to equalities, discrimination and abuse in a patriarchal area which abides to old traditional ways (Perspectives on Kwa-Zulu Natal, 2001). The effort we put into trying to change these factors slowly will not make a difference to the entire community but making a difference to one person at a time will create the ripple effect to initiate change and development (Oka, 2020). An important quote sums up this point beautifully “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” – Mother Teresa.

I realisation which came to me during these few weeks was a reiteration of the saying which was emphasised to us during our week of community lectures – “your group is only as strong as its weakest member”. I never understood the importance of teamwork, communication and having a strong relationship with your group members until this block. Lack of communication and unity can be detrimental to progress and development whilst good teamwork and accord can immediately speed up growth and provide a better and healthier environment to work in. The vast amount of thing I learnt do not feel like ‘lessons’, they feel like lifestyle changes because they have actually changed me and who I am as well as how I conduct myself. I am not oblivious to the fact that I still have a lot more to learn in this block and I have yet to perfect all the skills and lessons which I have gained but I have come to realise that as long as you keep trying and remain resilient throughout the process, you are assuring that you do justice to the OT profession for yourself and for the people who need it. A quote that forges a way forward for in the community as OT’s, by someone who has had such a huge impact on the community of South Africa: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” – Mahatma Gandhi
