Nyad (O-Ton)...

...erzählt die wahre Geschichte der gleichnamigen Extremsportlerin Diana Nyad, die mit über 60 einen dreißig Jahre alten Traum verwirklichen und von Kuba nach Florida schwimmen will.

Dass Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi und Jimmy Chin ihrer Hauptfigur dabei alle Ecken und Kanten belassen, ihre Hingabe und ihren Mut, aber auch ihre Hybris und ihren Egoismus an der Grenze zum Narzissmus offen und ohne große Wertung zeigen, ist ein großer Glücksgriff für diesen Film, gibt es doch der wie immer fantastischen Annette Benning die Möglichkeit, diesen plastischen, wunderbar widersprüchlichen Menschen in all seinen Facetten zu präsentieren und streut es doch in einen Plot, der ohne allzu große Überraschungen den typischen Inspirationsfilmgenreregeln folgt, Widerhaken ein, die ihn unterm Strich vielschichtiger, komplexer und nachhallender werden lassen. Dies ist nicht nur ein Film über die Größe und den Größenwahn des menschlichen Geistes, es ist auch ein Werk über echte Freundschaft und was diese einen Menschen kosten kann, über Verletzungen der Vergangenheit, deren Narben manchmal erst dann verblassen, wenn wir aufhören, an die eine große Heilung zu glauben und natürlich nicht zuletzt auch über die Vergänglichkeit und inwieweit es sinnvoll ist, ihr trotzig entgegenzutreten - "Nyad" nähert sich diesem letzten Thema erfreulich ergebnisoffen und empathisch. Getragen wird das alles von einem Edelcast, in welchem neben Benning vor allem Jodie Foster als vermeintlich unerschütterliche Trainerin und Freundin ganz groß aufspielt.

Packendes Biopic, dessen überaus menschliche Themen an Land fast spannender sind als das virtuos inszenierte Schwimmdrama im offenen Meer.
