World leaders congratulate Joe Biden on his victory

Canadian leader Justin Trudeau emphasized the close alliance between Canada and the US in his remarks.

“Congratulations Joe Biden and Kamala Harris,” Trudeau wrote on Twitter. “Our two countries are close friends, partners and allies. We share a relationship that’s unique on the world stage. I’m really looking forward to working together and building on that with you both.”

In Europe, the reactions were led by Irish politicians. “I want to congratulate the new President Elect of the USA [Joe Biden],” Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin tweeted after the result emerged. Martin also referenced Biden’s Irish-American heritage, adding: “Joe Biden has been a true friend of this nation throughout his life and I look forward to working with him in the years ahead. I also look forward to welcoming him back home when the circumstances allow!”

Ireland’s health minister Simon Coveney said the country’s government looked “forward to working with a (Biden/Harris) presidency to sustain & strengthen Irish American relations, and so much more.”

The leaders of US allies South Korea and Australia also congratulated Biden and Harris.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in a statement that “the President-elect has been a great friend of Australia over many years,” and noted that Biden will step into the role at a crucial time as the world battles the Covid-19 pandemic.

“American leadership is indispensable to meeting these challenges and upholding the rules, norms and standards of our international community,” Morrison said.

Morrison thanked current US President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for their work with Australia over the past four years.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in tweeted he looked forward to working with Biden and Harris.

“Our alliance is strong and the bond between our two countries is rock-solid,” Moon said.

‘Welcome back America!’

In France Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo also reacted on Twitter, declaring “Welcome back America!”

“While we are about to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, this victory symbolizes our need to act together more than ever, in view of climate emergency,” she wrote.

The US left the landmark agreement earlier this week.

French President Emmanuel Macron also posted a lively tweet, writing: “The Americans have chosen their President. We have a lot to do to overcome today’s challenges. Let’s work together!”

The sense of Biden’s election strengthening the US global role was also echoed in other European statements.

Norbert Röttgen, Chairman of the German Foreign Affairs Committee, said he was “very happy for all my American friends and for this great chance to revive our transatlantic friendship,” while Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said Germany wanted “to invest in our cooperation for a new transatlantic beginning, a new deal.”

London mayor Sadiq Khan said Biden and Harris’ win meant it was “time to get back to building bridges, not walls” in a dig at President Trump’s policy of building a wall at the US-Mexico border.

Khan and Trump have clashed repeatedly over the years.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson also congratulated Biden and Harris and stressed the importance of the transatlantic relationship.

“Congratulations to Joe Biden on his election as President of the United States and to Kamala Harris on her historic achievement,” Johnson said on Twitter.

“The US is our most important ally and I look forward to working closely together on our shared priorities, from climate change to trade and security.”

Johnson and Trump’s administrations were thought to be close allies and UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab took care to acknowledge the White House incumbent.

“It was a close contest and [Donald Trump] fought hard,” he wrote on Twitter.

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also congratulated Biden, according to Orbán’s spokesman Zoltan Kovacs.

Orbán said in a letter to Biden: “I wish you good health and continuous successes in fulfilling your duties of extraordinary responsibility.”

‘Critical shared interests’

Some politicians who had closer ties to Trump took the time to reflect on the sitting president’s achievements.

In Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted his congratulations on Twitter several hours after other world leaders.

Netanyahu said he and Biden have had a “long & warm” personal relationship for almost 40 years and sees him as “a great friend of Israel” and looks forward to working together.

Netanyahu has worked closely with the White House on Middle East policy in recent years.

In a separate Twitter post, Netanyahu thanked Trump “for the friendship you have shown the state of Israel and me personally, for recognizing Jerusalem and the Golan, for standing up to Iran, for the historic peace accords and for bringing the American-Israeli alliance to unprecedented heights.”

Meanwhile, Israeli Opposition leader Yair Lapid said: “Congratulations to my friend President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris. The relationship between our countries is based on deeply held values and critical shared interests which I know will be at the heart of your administration.”

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas also offered his congratulations to the winners of the US Presidential election.

In a statement released on the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, Abbas said he was “looking forward to working with President-elect Biden and his administration in order to enhance the Palestinian-American relations and achieve freedom, independence, justice and dignity for our people… and in order to achieve peace, stability and security for all in our region and the world.”

‘The ugly face of liberal democracy’

World leaders spent the past week watching closely as the election results gradually unfolded. Some, like UK Prime Minister Johnson, tread lightly in anticipation of an unclear outcome. Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau had said he was observing cautiously so as to not interfere with the process. Others cheered on the prospect of a Biden win. Paris Mayor Hidalgo had voiced her ongoing support for Biden and hope for renewed partnerships with the US on issues like climate change.

Many foreign onlookers had concerns about President Trump’s comments on voter fraud and early claims of victory, and the impact those might have on democracy globally. A senior German politician described Trump’s approach to the ongoing vote-counting as “unbelievable” and “awful behavior.”

Russia’s Foreign Ministry had commented on Twitter that the tight race was a sign of weakness in the US electoral system.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whose relationship with Washington has soured under Trump, echoed the sentiment after Saturday’s election outcome. “The situation in the US and what they themselves say about their elections is a spectacle!” Khamenei said on Twitter.

On Sunday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the next US administration had an opportunity “to make up for the past mistakes.”

“An opportunity has arisen now for the next US administration to make up for the past mistakes and return to the course of commitment to international obligations by respecting international principles,” Rouhani said from Tehran, according to Iran’s state-run Press TV.

Rouhani said Iran respects international obligations, and that they expect similar commitments from world leaders, according to Press TV.

Kamala Harris’ historic night

The significance of Harris’ victory as Vice-President elect was not lost on the world stage. The election call on Saturday made Harris the first woman to win the vice presidency, not to mention the first Black woman and the first South Asian woman to achieve this.

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi offered Harris, the daughter of an Indian mother and Jamaican father, his “heartiest congratulations” on Twitter.

“Your success is pathbreaking, and a matter of immense pride not just for your chittis, but also for all Indian-Americans,” Modi wrote.

“Chitti” is a Tamil word used to refer to the younger sisters of a person’s mother.

The Indian leader is a close Trump ally but said he was confident that “the vibrant India-US ties will get even stronger” with Harris’ support.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and Indian opposition figure Rahul Gandhi were among those to congratulate Harris on her groundbreaking achievement.

In Colombia, mayor of Bogota Claudia Lopez had a particularly exuberant reaction on Twitter.

“How proud that a woman, Afro, Indian, Jamaican, great professional and extraordinary leader, became the Vice Presidency of the United States for the first time!” Lopez wrote.

“With every woman who wins, we all win!”

SALT LAKE CITY — A member of President Donald Trump’s Cabinet beamed when she was given a red training apron at a Salt Lake thrift store on Wednesday.

Her signature appears on much of the cash printed during the Trump administration because she was the U.S. Treasurer for two years. But Jovita Carranza identified with the customer service training program at Deseret Industries because she now helps oversee the nation’s months-old COVID-19 relief Paycheck Protection Program in her role at the head of the Small Business Administration.

“Oh, I’m in training,” she said while she put on the apron and tied it behind her. “When the PPP kicked it, it was all new. I’m still learning.”

Carranza has been crisscrossing the country in recent weeks to see how well the SBA’s loans are helping small businesses keep workers on their payroll. The loans are forgivable if employee retention criteria are met.

She stopped at the thrift store as part of a tour of Welfare Square, the humanitarian hub of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She said faith-based organizations are a critical part of the nation’s COVID-19 response.

“I was totally moved by the amount of community work done here,” she said after touring the bakery, dairy, bishops’ storehouse and thrift store.

“While you have some small businesses thriving with the PPP, sustained in their small businesses along with the Economic Injury Disaster loan program, you also have faith-based organizations like the Latter-day Saints that I visited here that provide community support,” Carranza said.

Carranza described to Utah Gov. Gary Herbert, who joined part of the tour on Welfare Square, how she joined the administration’s successful effort to convince Congress that churches and other faith-based organizations should be eligible for the PPP loans.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints did not apply for a PPP loan, and Carranza said it has played an essential role.

“They are not asking for the PPP, but they’re providing services based on the support they received from their members,” she said. “The support that they provide is not only food, it’s not only worship, but it’s also education, development of skills and really contributing to prosperity and self-sufficiency, which is significant for this administration. The president has always talked about supporting those that are in greatest need.”

President Trump visited Welfare Square himself in December 2017.

Carranza said she was in awe after Latter-day Saint leaders described how they operate Welfare Square and 110 bishops’ storehouses throughout the United States.

“When something like COVID-19 arrives unexpectedly, we have a two-year supply of food and commodities stored that can begin shipping immediately to help those in need, and then we ramp up production to replenish the supply,” said Elder Kent F. Richards, director of Church Hosting.

For example, the Welfare Square bakery alone typically makes 2,000 loaves of bread each day. It has been churning out 6,600 loaves a day since the shutdowns caused by COVID-19 created economic turmoil.

The church also operates more than 100 trucks and trailers that regularly help supply food pantries around the nation. Since mid-March, it has sent out 15 extra truckloads of food and commodities each week. One truck carries enough food to feed 1,400 people for a week.

“Utah leads the nation in volunteerism,” Herbert told Carranza. “We also lead the nation in charitable giving, not just in donations but in volunteering time and talents.”

“That means government doesn’t have to work as hard, because the private sector, where the church is a leader, is helping people do the right things for the right reasons.”

Carranza was in the White House with President Trump the day before traveling to Utah. She was on hand when he signed the pardon for Susan B. Anthony to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women winning the right to vote in the United States.

She also announced in a YouTube video a new Women’s Suffrage Centennial commemorative silver dollar and medal set.

Carranza was in Pittsburgh last weekend and also has visited Wisconsin, North Carolina, Texas and Illinois in the past few weeks.

Before arriving at Welfare Square, she visited Solid Ground LLC, a Salt Lake-based contracting business that received a PPP loan. Solid Ground recently did the work on the front gate at Zion National Park.

Carranza will visit three more Salt Lake-area businesses on Thursday.

“We’re honored that she’d take the time to come visit with us to see our facilities” at Welfare Square, said Elder Jack N. Gerard, executive director of church communications and a General Authority Seventy. “We to date have provided over 750 projects in over 137 nations around the world. So our reach is broad, but we’re also focused around the United States which is part of the what the administrator is looking at.”

Carranza, the daughter of Mexican immigrants who rose from a part-time, night-shift box handler at UPS to become the company’s vice president of air operations and then president of Latin American and Caribbean operations, made a plea in Spanish to needy Hispanic populations to take advantage of both the government PPP program and the church’s job training programs, self-reliance courses and humanitarian aid.

“Not only are their programs available in the government that can provide a lifeline, but there also is help available from the Latter-day Saints,” she said.

“There’s not enough words to describe the impact you’re having in our communities,” she told Elder Gerard. “Thank you so much for what you do nationally and globally, and the fact that you have so many volunteers. You set the standards for what volunteerism is, what mission is and what sacrifice is, and I’m leaving this location much more enlightened and enriched than when I arrived.”
