Girls Behind The Rock Show x Feminin Ror International Transgender Visibility Day
Tumblr media
Written by April Bredael.
At Girls Behind The Rock Show and Feminin Ror, we value and support individuals of all identities. We value diversity, inclusion, and support for people being their authentic selves. Today, March 31st is International Transgender Visibility Day. On this day we honor the progress our society has made, yet acknowledge the abundance of work that still needs to be done.
International Transgender Visibility Day celebrates transgender identities and raising awareness and education about discrimination faced by transgender individuals every day, as well as a celebration of their contributions to society.
Trans representation in the music industry is something we strive to recognize. Regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation, music is something that brings individuals together. Recognizing and celebrating our differences is what makes our industry stronger, and creates a more diverse and remarkable environment within the industry. Today, we will acknowledge our favorite transgender artists and their contributions to the music industry as well as providing resources in support of the LGBTQ+ community.
Tumblr media
Cavetown, who has created success within music has been performing since 2013. At age 14, he broke barriers with his whole-hearted optimism and yearning for life that was encapsulated within his music and a success with his fans. In 2018, he released his debut full length album, Lemon Boy which saw immediate success. After pursuing multiple sold out national and international tours, he has created an authentic bond with fans who gather as a community around his music and vision.

Kim Petras, who has been creating music since she was a teenager, has quickly taken the world by storm. The German artist found success with her single “Heart to Break” breaking into Top 40 radio. Petras has been a longtime advocate for transgender rights and states that “I’m super proud of being transgender, and I love the rest of the community,” she says. “The suicide rate is so ridiculously high, and it’s so difficult when you don’t have supportive parents. I want to be a good example.”

SOPHIE, an influential Scottish producer, changed the music industry forever with her impact in only thirty four short years. In addition to SOPHIE’s work in the music production industry, SOPHIE was a long time advocate for trans rights. "Trans-ness is taking control to bring your body more in line with your soul and spirit so the two aren't fighting against each other and struggling to survive," SOPHIE shared. "On this earth, it's that you can get closer to how you feel your true essence is without the societal pressures of having to fulfill certain traditional roles based on gender." SOPHIE’s pioneered production visions and immense work for inclusion within the music industry changed the music scene forever and paved the way for future queer individuals pursuing music.

Shea Diamond, who specializes in soul and R&B has had a different break into the music industry from many others. As a trans woman of color, Diamond has faced adversity throughout her entire life. While incarcerated for an attempted bank robbery to pay for gender reassignment surgery, she wrote her hit track “I Am Her.” While in prison, Diamond experienced humiliation, isolation, and misgendering as punishments. She shares that "To be a 40-year-old woman, a trans woman, to make it to that age it's not really heard of. We get killed off before we're 25,” and that “People don't want to see the struggle of what it takes for a trans woman to survive. It's more comfortable for people — for everybody now — for entertainment purposes to see a drag queen. That's a person who can take it off. The trans experience is a person who isn't doing it for entertainment purposes. Everything this person does is for survival. What does survival look like? It looks like [me]." Because of her experiences, Diamond is a huge advocate for transgender rights and continues the fight for equality.

Lucas Silveira, of The Cliks, broke barriers as the first transgender man to sign with a major record label. He shares that “Something that I would like to do is to bring some aspect of normalcy to people like me," Silveira stated, "We're a very, very diverse community — I've never met two transgender people who've had the same experience." Since coming out, The Cliks have released several popular tracks including “Complicated,” “Dirty King,” and “Oh Yeah.”

While acknowledging the success of the above individuals and more, we must continue to spark advocacy for change and inclusion in the fight for equality. Although dedicated as a day of visibility for the transgender community on March 31st, it is important to continue spreading visibility every day.

music: weekly roundup (our favorite submissions of the week)
21st Century Teen - HOL
Beginning this week is a catchy and lyrical track by HOL. Released by an actual twenty-first century teen, the upbeat chorus depicts the struggles of growing up and being a teenager in the twenty-first century. Faced with a dichotomy of a lingering childhood past and the unpredictability of the future, HOL shares these honest emotions, thoughts, doubts, and fears associated with growing up.
Winning Side - Common Static
Serving as a catharsis between inner doubt and self actualization, “Winning Side” acknowledges the internal struggles of festering doubts while working to attain success. Paired with heavy guitar riffs and strong vocals, this pop punk track features a heavy message amongst captivating vocals.
Out of Bounds - Megan Vidovich
With her new release, singer-songwriter artist Megan Vidovich sings about the elasticity within friendships and what happens when one heart is sparked by another. The upbeat track seeks to identify a line between friendship and forbidden limits. On a mission to answer her query until the very end, “Out of Bounds” defies the friendzone and pushes the boundaries of association and adoration.
Where Did All The Magic Go? - Keylime
Fully produced by EDM artist Keylime, “Where Did All The Magic Go?” encapsulates listeners into a world of enchanting possibilities. Pairing a catchy beat with a futuristic sound, the track questions the demise of charm and incantation. Featuring light and airy melodies, a powerful buildup, and an unparalleled production, the track is one that leaves listeners feeling magical.
Back Before - Altello
Written as an exploratory tribute, “Back Before” acknowledges something that changed everything; a pivotal moment in one's life that alters it all. Altello explores these life changing moments, and questions what life would be lived had they not happened. With this pursuit comes a spaceship interlude, strong rhythms, and a thrill of acceptance.
Stone Cold - Viana
From the initial bass, Viana brings power, class, and a little bit of sass with her new track “Stone Cold.” The memorable lyrics paired with the enticing vocals create a track like no other. “Stone Cold” features a new take on processing heartbreak and disappointment all while dealing with one's own emotions.
Fix It - A.C.A
An untalked about subject in pop punk, A.C.A acknowledges the flaws and foibles in our world today. Although the track itself features heavy guitar chords and classic pop punk vocals, the lyrics create another story. “Fix It” discusses the challenges of those who need extra help juxtaposed with the ‘struggles’ of those sending all of their thoughts and prayers. With this track, A.C.A works to bring the importance of human rights to light.
Power - Sierra Lundy
Slowing it down with this next track, “Power” by Sierra Lundy acknowledges the power and capability of someone while synchronously learning vulnerability without decrepitude. “Power” features chilling melodies matched with the soft notes of the piano that discuss the difficulties of breaking down walls that appear too strong to be broken.
Out With The Old - MONOWHALES
Bringing a dynamic build up from the first note, “Out With The Old” serves as an anthem for the disenfranchised. The track throws all emotions on the table and unites a new age cycle in solidarity together. Longing for a future vibrant with inclusive and novel ideality, MONOWHALES created this catharsis of a track to no longer remain silenced.
fake love - Jazzie Young
Cut from the same cloth as Lorde and Lana Del Rey, Jazzie Young seeks to explore the oasis of emotional freedom with her new track “fake love.” The melodic piece features powerful harmonies, whimsical melodies, and a euphonious production. Acknowledging the limits of fake love, Young solicits the tender emotions, thoughts, and feelings of self acceptance.

Eliminating Gatekeeping in the Music Industry: An Interview with Shelby Hancock
Tumblr media
Written by April Bredael. Graphic by Paula Nicole.
When it comes to breaking into the music industry, resources are not only needed, but essential and can make or break one's access to opportunities, networking events, and even job postings. Here at Girls Behind The Rock Show, we are proud to be one of those resources, existing to promote and further the education and experience of underrepresented people seeking to enter the industry and make a change in the infrastructure of the entire industry.
I had the chance to meet virtually with Shelby Hancock, a 2020 graduate of FDCU and founder of Music Industry Entryway, a resource dedicated to sharing resources with others and providing a compilation of ways to get your foot in the door. While Shelby is well known and an established hard worker in the music industry community, she shares that it hasn’t always been this way.
“When I began to apply for jobs, I wasn’t getting anything. I was getting tons of rejections, I was kind of unmotivated. From there I went back to LinkedIn and was starting to get more serious. I found more resources like Girls Behind The Rock Show, Amethyst Collab, The Digilogue, everything like that. These are amazing resources, but I realized they were hard to find if you didn’t already have a surrounding of like minded people in the industry. From there I realized that it would be so great if there was a place where people could come together, get all these resources, get to know each other, and be surrounded by opportunities.”
From there, Music Industry Entryway began to come to life. With an emphasis on resource sharing and community building,  Shelby created something that hadn’t been done before; a one stop place to access the many vital and innovative resources for people to utilize, whether they were just beginning and hadn’t heard of any of them, or more immersed and wanted more communities to join. What began as a Google Sheet filled with links turned into a fully functional website in less than 24 hours. She shared that since she’d already compiled the resources, why not share them if it would help someone else?
After then expanding her community onto other platforms including Clubhouse, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter, Shelby realized that she wasn’t alone in the rejections and difficulty breaking into the music scene.
“I think that we are kind of taught a mindset of all competition when we’re first going into it. In college, we’re taught that we’re all competing for the same job. When I began to apply I kind of had that mindset, but when I started to meet other people I realized, this is not a competition. These are people I might be working with in the future. If I get this job, that’s great. If they get this job, that’s great …. I’m definitely wishing and hoping that the barriers to get into the music industry will be broken down soon and I think that this generation will be the one to do so.”
Providing resources that often don’t even apply to her, Shelby shares that she enjoys helping others and sharing information whenever she can to create opportunities for others, “If doing something as simple as sharing a post of information is going to help someone get an internship or have access to an event that will teach them something important, why would I not?” As a postgrad young professional, Shelby wishes that she would have had a Music Industry Entryway when she was still in college and eligible for many of the internships only offered to college students. Fueled by her compassion and drive to help others, Shelby is avid in her support of like minded people in the industry. Whether it be speaking at panels or setting up networking calls with those that look up to her, Shelby is a team player in every sense of the world.
One of the crucial questions I had for Shelby is how people can work to eliminate these barriers to entry in their day to day lives without everyone having the resources and time to create an entire community. She shares that the first step is acknowledging that clear barriers exist. Whether that be unpaid internships, geographical barriers, or something as simple as not being in college and therefore ineligible for many opportunities, breaking in is tough, and acknowledging that everyone doesn’t have the same access to opportunities is key. Secondly, she shares that having these conversations with people and altering your mindset from competition to community is what creates an open and supportive environment in the industry. Acknowledging that established music industry personnel are often so ‘go go go that they may not even realize the difficulties’ is another idea Shelby mentioned. Throughout the duration of COVID-19 and everyone being forced to slow down, she adds that ‘people are beginning to take a step back and have time to share more information. The pandemic was obviously a brutal thing but from it a lot of beautiful connections were made.’
With these resources and mindsets, it is entirely possible to break down these walls in order to build a more accessible future and easier entry to the industry of our dreams. Following the example of leading industry personnel like Shelby, it is easy to envision a future where all of this is made possible. One thing I know for certain is that with her strong and kind-willed mindset and abundance of determination, Shelby Hancock is on track towards a wonderful future and making steps towards a greater change. I am endlessly grateful to know her and call her a good friend in my life.

Single Review: “are you sure?” by Mae Krell
New york city based artist and publicist Mae Krell is back again with their latest single titled ‘are you sure?’ The track follows the success of their previous hits, ‘wash,’ ‘home,’ and ‘garden.’ Throughout their prior releases, Mae has created a unique lyrical style that is easily seen carried into this new release. Although Mae began releasing tracks from the ripe age of sixteen; one aspect of their music has remained consistent. Every release is different, yet they all contain aspects of serenity, and tell a story using words, emotions, melodies, and passion.
Today marks the release of Mae Krell’s latest single ‘are you sure?’ full of their most intimate thoughts and feelings. This track will absolutely pull on your heart-strings, with lyricism representing relapsing into a bad mental space and feeling as though you’ve reached the same low again and again, even when ultimately you’re in a much better place: ‘I wonder why I’m in the same place again.’ I absolutely adored how Mae discusses the difficulty in seeing your personal growth and positive progress when falling back into a depressive state, instead fixating on the negatives. The simplistic acoustic guitar complementing Mae’s vocals entrancingly adds to the heart-wrenching nature of the track, particularly allowing for Mae’s voice to take the lead and carry the heavy emotions through the song. I would recommend giving this single a listen to feel the weight of Mae’s words yourself, for a real cathartic listening experience.
You can find out more about Mae Krell via their website, or by following them on Instagram. Stream their new single ‘are you sure?’ on Spotify here.

Interview: Husks
Tumblr media
Breaking molds and art styles with his unique experimental dark pop style, Husks has broken his way into the music scene with his new single “You Will Find A Garden” that debuted Friday, February 26th. Racking up over a thousand streams already, the track sets the pace for what is to come. Diverging away from traditional pop, Husks utilizes unique lyrics, sounds, and melodies to create an individual style that not many are able to replicate. Within his music he explores themes of purity, religious uncertainty, anxiety, and tension.
I was able to virtually meet with the Brooklyn based singer songwriter, who created the image and style that is Husks, to discuss all things relating to his new single, the origin of his musical image, what inspires his writing and creative process, and what fans can expect from him later on this year.
“You Will Find A Garden'' features a traditional dark pop style while exploring themes of tension, anxiety, and hope. He stated that throughout these dark times in his life, he turned towards horror movies. Looking back on the emotions and situations, he realized that he wanted a sense of not feeling alone in the feelings of isolation and fear. In one of these movies, a character described people as “husks” all in their own ways. The word itself means a shell of somebody, and he  took this to heart. We are all our own husks, and can choose to empower and fill or deplete ourselves. He channeled this energy into his first EP release, and continues to pour it into his new single.
Husks is inspired by unique and distinct artists who are unafraid to do their own thing, and who let their artistry embody itself. He strives to be like his inspirations, and let his music speak for itself. By using a unique stylistic approach, his new single, as well as the rest of the tracks premiering on his album “Somewhere, There Is A Garden Where You May Rest” releasing May 7th, definitely stand out in the ears of listeners.
Find out more about Husks here! And stream “You Will Find A Garden” here on Spotify.

EP Review: Young and Dying in the Occident Supreme by Mobley
Tumblr media
Influenced by the opulent royal palaces and lengthy savanna plains, singer and songwriter Mobley wrote the majority of his new EP “Young and Dying in the Occident Supreme” while in Thailand. Mobley says he found inspiration within the country, viewing his own country from a new perspective.
The EP consists of an intro followed by five tracks. To commemorate the release of the EP, Mobley is teaming up with popular artists such as Magic Giant, Spencer Ludwig, Michigander, and more to bring virtual live music back into the hearts of the cities across America. The virtual tour titled ‘Devil in the Daydream,’ kicks off on February 25th, and is working to support struggling venues across the United States and employees affected by venue closers, as well as the DAWA fund, which works to assist people of color experiencing emergency financial needs.
The EP kicks off with a bang, featuring an upbeat track titled ‘James Crow.’ Lyrically catchy from the first few words, ‘James Crow’ immediately encapsulates listeners into the rhythmic melodies and memorable verses. The track also features the ‘Devil in the Daydream’ line that the tour name comes from. Featuring bells, sharp lyrics, and shrilling instruments, the track sets the mood for the rest of the EP right from the get go.
Next up is a similarly catchy piece titled ‘Nobody’s Favorite.’ This piece focuses on hard hitting lyrics and a beat that is upbeat yet enchanting. The track features strong falsettos paired with a heavy guitar. ‘Nobody’s Favorite’ manages to take seemingly haunting lyrics paired with a strong beat and turn two opposite features into something cohesive, attention getting, and beautiful.
Kicking it back up a notch, the third track on the EP, ‘Dreams Of Empire’ brings the energy levels up again. Featuring a memorable hook, strong vocals, and unique usage of base, guitar, and electronics, the track is not one you want to miss.
‘Mate,’ a more slowed down piece showcases strong vocals nestled within a more simple beat. The track highlights the vocal ranges Mobley is able to achieve while exhibiting melodious and gentle lyrics. As close to a love song as can get, ‘Mate’ describes these feelings with a soothing and tender tone.
The closing track on the EP is titled ‘Lost Boys/Occidental Death’ and truly encapsulates all Mobley has to offer. Featuring soft lyrics paired with a heavy chorus and beat, the dynamic aspects of the track serve as a catharsis to his thoughts, and a finale to his story.
The tour kicks off TODAY, and will be presented in a series of nine virtual shows. Tickets can be purchased here. All shows air at 8pm CT and can be viewed up to two weeks after initial broadcasting. For more information on Mobley, check out his Instagram here.

Music: Interview with Erin Kirby
Atlanta based rising star Erin Kirby brings the energy and passion with her new track Bad Luck featuring Zac Lawson. The release follows her smash hit single Half In Love that recently surpassed 900,000 Spotify streams. The track was inspired by not feeling ready for a relationship due to still being involved in a past one, and the struggles of moving forward when you’re not ready to let go. Written with Zac and Jake Lawson, the hit single is on the rise this Valentine’s Day. Along with writing and performing, Kirby additionally spends her time volunteering at local animal shelters, hospitals, and anti bullying events out of Atlanta. Kirby said the most rewarding part of the experience was watching people go up to one another and apologize for events that occurred in the past.
While quarantine has been slow for most, Erin Kirby has taken it to the next level. When asked, she said she began to learn recording at home along with writing and production via Facetime. She has additionally participated in a few virtual shows via Instagram and Facebook live streams. While many view quarantine as a negative, Kirby was able to write her most recent single Bad Luck through Facetime. After facing difficulties with her being in Georgia while the Lawson’s resided in Rhode Island, they decided to continue to create virtually. By September of 2020, Bad Luck had been created. As for future releases, Kirby revealed that she has not stopped writing, and while there are no official release dates, “there will definitely be more coming this year.”
When asked if she could perform anywhere in a post COVID world, her response revolved around a dream performance at the Grammys. Kirby revealed that the goal sounded magical and like “a big legendary thing.” She shared that she is continuously motivated by others including the likes of Ed Sheeran, Jessi J, Lewis Capaldi, and others, and wants to be that motivation for others to see.
“Whatever you’re thinking about doing, if you’re thinking about it or you’re looking for a sign then that is your sign right there. Go for it. Try it out. And, the worst thing that’s ever going to happen is you’re going to fail or you’re going to hear the word no but you’ll never going to get that answer if you don’t go for what you’re thinking about ….. I know that sounds cheesy, but it's cheesy for a reason.”
Although touring isn’t occurring right now, you can keep up with Erin Kirby via Instagram or Facebook liveshows as well as by following her social media for updates on new releases, behind the scenes content, and more! Her new single Bad Luck featuring Zac Lawson can be streamed here.

Bringing a pop rock beat to a celebration of the end of what felt like an eternity, Mary Ore creates an oath to the end of 2020, with hope for a more promising future.
