Do you think Biden would have beaten Trump had he run in 2016? I know Biden stepped aside because because of his son, but it also seems likely he stepped aside for Clinton.
Yes, I do think that Biden would have beaten Trump in 2016. I don't know how Biden would have handled a campaign at that time with the death of his son having taken place much more recently, but if he could have emotionally handled the rigors of a full-on Presidential campaign at that time, I think he would have beaten Trump in the general election.
The question to me is whether or not Biden could have won the Democratic nomination in 2016 if he had run against Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Obviously, Biden was younger at the time than he is now and still a much better retail campaigner than Hillary ever was, but I don't know if a Biden campaign in 2016 would have had the same energy as the Sanders campaign that year -- either from the grassroots or from the top-down. It would have been a much different campaign than 2020, as well, because that one took place during the pandemic and Biden was able to run against an historically unpopular incumbent in the midst of botching the worst public health crisis that every voter in America had ever lived through.
The other big question if Biden had run in 2016 is the role of Barack Obama. In 2016, Biden was the incumbent Vice President, finishing his second term of a partnership with President Obama that ended up being one of the closest personal and political relationships that a President and Vice President ever had. But it is no secret that President Obama did not believe that then-Vice President Biden was the best choice to succeed him. Biden's emotional well-being after the death of his son in May 2015 certainly worried Obama, but in books and reporting since that time, it's been apparent that Obama believed that Hillary Clinton made more sense as his successor in 2016 than Biden for a number of reasons. That ultimately resulted in some hurt feelings on the Biden side at the time when Obama seemed to be urging Biden to step aside in 2016 while the Vice President was still considering a potential run. It never impacted Biden's loyalty to the Obama Administration or truly got personal, but it was especially troubling to Biden because he still had not made a final decision about a potential 2016 campaign and one of Beau Biden's dying wishes was that his father would run for President. Obama never directly discouraged Biden from running in 2016; he thought that Biden earned the right to make his own decision about the race, but he was worried about Biden's emotional state in the wake of Beau's recent death, he worried that Biden wasn't the right candidate to defeat Hillary or Bernie for the nomination, and he worried that a potential Biden loss -- either in the primaries or the general election -- would tarnish Biden's overall political legacy and possibly come across as a repudiation of the Obama Administration eight years in the White House.
Of course, Trump's victory over Hillary in 2016 gave Obama's successor the opportunity to immediately start reversing many of Obama's accomplishments and reset the hope and change represented by Obama's successful 2008 campaign. And the irony is that the crucial, traditionally-Democratic blue-collar voters that Hillary Clinton's campaign tended to overlook in 2016 are the same voters that Biden has spent a significant portion of his political career representing and connecting with. So in 2016, Trump won battleground states like Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Pennsylvania, and Ohio that Obama had won in both 2008 and 2012. Without those states in 2016, Trump wouldn't have defeated Hillary Clinton, and when Biden did run against Trump in 2020, his victories in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania (Trump once again won Ohio and Iowa) were crucial in the Electoral College.

I'm not from Ireland, but I absolutely understood your reference! I play violin and fiddle music is one of my favorite genres to play. I actually first heard Galway Girl from the movie Finding You. (If you haven't watched it, it's a lovely movie about a classical violinist traveling to Ireland and learning to play fiddle music. I highly recommend it, despite what others may say.) I love playing the tune on occasion! It's so pretty! (Also, I absolutely despise Ed Sheeran's version.)
Fun wee fact about Galway girl it was actually written and sung by an American with help from irish musician Sharon Shannon it was always way more popular in Ireland tho but yeah I can't stand the ed sheeran song he even said he was aware of the original song but didn't care like come on dude

On This Day in F1: March 23rd
Present: Australia Day 2
History: 2016 GPDA Letter
On March 23rd, 2024, day 2 of the Australian Grand Prix was happening. There was continued backlash against Williams' decision to switch out Logan Sargeant for Alex Albon after Albon crashed his car the previous day. Sargeant was in the garage and showed professionalism concerning the situation.
But this situation has brought forth questions about parts allotment and what would happen if there were to be another unfixable Williams crash in the next few races.
Eight years prior, the GPDA was raising concerns over the direction of Formula One. In the letter, the GPDA directors urged F1 owners and stakeholders to rethink the governance structure. Though not explicitly named in the letter, it alluded to the GPDA's issues with then-owner Bernie Ecclestone.

(Letter Transcript)
Just hours after the open letter was published, it was announced that Sky would get the broadcasting rights to F1. For the first time in 40 years, F1's broadcast would be moved from live free-to-air television in the UK. The following day, the new qualifying system was adopted by FIA President Jean Todt despite it being abandoned by teams following their criticism of it at the first race of the 2016 season.
These were just two of the reasons that caused the drivers to pen this open letter. Other decision-making concerns included:
the double points for just the 2014 final race which was the title-deciding race between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg
the major flaws with the hybrid engine regulations that were just being addressed
proposal to introduce a cheaper alternative engine to run alongside the turbo hybrids, with an equivalence formula to balance performance
All of these decisions could be traced back to either Ecclestone or Todt. Most of these decisions were to either spice up the racing or get more money.
In response to the letter, Bernie Ecclestone called the F1 drivers windbags and essentially powerless in enacting change within the sport.
Windbags United is what the 2016 drivers' dinner picture was captioned and was a jab at Ecclestone. (The dinner in itself is something to discuss on its own with drama over who paid the bill.)

I was going to say we need to create a social norm against whipping out your trauma as a trumo card in online arguments, but honestly a significant amount of people's politics on here are based on how triggered something makes them, it might just be a pipe dream. but still it's worth stating: just because a situation or person vaguely reminds you of some traumatic experience doesn't make it actually similar, nor does it make it appropriate to just lay out that experience in front of thousands of onlime strangers. a guy glibly telling annoying pirate show fans they should be having gay sex is not your shitty abusive ex nor does he need to know about your shitty ex. a politician raising his voice and being passionate about his beliefs is not the same as your dad yelling over crockpot, nor is it appropriate to bring up this story when arguing about why you don't like said politician. people wearing pup hoods at pride are not the same as your dad sexually assaulting you as a child, nor is it appropriate to bring up the assault in arguments about kink at pride. etc.

People talk a lot about how the Republican party is falling apart and imploding, but honestly the same thing is happening to the Democratic party as well, just in a less outwardly flashy way. They're both getting worse and drifting away from their purported values and they're making each other worse as they drag each other down like two crabs in a bucket. The Democratic party is now a lot like what the Republican party used to be like, and the Republican party is now the "let's install a dictatorship" party.

Do you think Bernie Sanders would have been able to beat Trump in either 2016 or 2020?
I do think Bernie Sanders would have defeated Trump in 2020 if he had been the Democratic nominee. I'm less confident about how he would fared in a general election in 2016.
