Who was Muriyd ‘Two Clouds’ Williams?
Muriyd Abdullah Muhammad Williams (also known as Niishwak Akumahkwak, translated as Two Clouds) was an Afro Native Muslim who was born in Newark, NJ and raised in East Orange. In most recent years he became known for his activism and teaching endeavors. As an enrolled member of NJ's Ramapough Lenape Indian tribe, he successfully fought large corporations, the Mahwah Police Department, and New Jersey state itself to (almost single-handedly) win back and/or stop the taking of dozens and dozens of acres of land which rightfully belong to the tribe.
An autodidact, Muriyd spoke more than a dozen languages, was a gifted artist and musician, and innate healer. Being of a multi-racial/ethnic/cultural/spiritual reality, he embraced his Islaamic, Munsee, and Haudenosaunee heritages, accepting them as one Truth sent from the One Creator of all. He was earning his BA at Ramapo College when he was murdered.

July 3, 2022
Less than twenty-four hours after returning from New England, Muriyd was dead. All that morning he passed the time texting, scrolling and posting on social media while he awaited the time to pick up his son for a children's birthday party. He was excited to see his son. He had lost two years with the toddler, and since being allowed to be in his life he never, ever missed an opportunity. The only reason he was still in town was so he could be with his boy.
Muriyd and his son's mother were in consistent contact until late morning when he abruptly stopped replying. Wednesday morning he was found on the Ramapough religious land- the first land he secured for the tribe and where he spent much of his time meditating on life- drowned and badly decomposed.
The police report from when his body was taken said he was in the water near his overturned canoe, but not only did a NJ State Trooper confirm that was not
true, video footage disproves it also. The detectives on the scene determined sans assessment that there appeared to be no foul play- although he was apparently on the shoreline slumped into the water headfirst, hidden under brush, and wearing no shoes. The coroner stated that there was no evidence his death was caused by suicide, medical emergency, or accident. Still, Mahwah PD closed the case without an investigation.
HOMOCIDE
A few short weeks before his death Muriyd had been voted in as tribal war chief. He traveled to New England that weekend to meet with other tribal chiefs to discuss a nuisance- a Lenape from a different band who, without proof, con-stantly accuses the Ramapough of being illegitimate Indians. The guy had come on the land causing trouble, scaring the women and elders, about a week and a half before. Muriyd was trying to peace-fully gain support to end the bullying, but either the meeting had not been set up or they just would not see him. He left disappointed at the lack of brotherhood.
By Sunday, something terrible happened which resulted in his murder. The two "comrade" tribal members who went with him have implicated themselves innumerable times, and happenings among the tribe makes it very likely he was killed in a coup. Adding to that belief is the fact that the tribal chief nor any of the tribal government has done a thing in nearly nine months to speak out or insist on an investigation. This for the man who is the sole reason they even have the land that he was seemingly killed over.
