“In many cases, the histories and shared experiences of African and Native Americans are so intertwined, they are indivisible. At the same time, however, the shared history and the people that make up it’s chapters have become invisible.”
Tumblr media
“Throughout American history, people of combined African and Native American descent have often struggled for acceptance, not only from dominant cultures but also from their own communities. In this collection of twenty-seven groundbreaking essays, authors from across the Americas explore the complex personal histories and contemporary lives of people wth a dual heritage that has rarely received attention as part of the multicultural landscape. Illustrated with seventy-five paintings, photographs, and drawings, the book brings to light an epic but little-known part of American history that speaks to present-day struggles for racial identity and understanding.”
This book of essays, as compiled by Gabrielle Tayac, contains stories from all over the so-called “american” continents and explains the conjoined lives of black people, indigenous people, and the resulting black natives / afroindigenous peoples. I won’t spoil much of the book, because it’s a great read and you should read it cover to cover, but I can tell you it’s pretty diverse, and tells history from a black native decolonizing perspective, it even includes a short chapter about south american afroindigenous peoples, specifically afro-aymara from Bolivia, which was nice to see! I highly recommend it.

@blue._.lotuslove: "I'm Lakaylah. I'm #mixedwith #NativeAmerican (#Cherokee) #White & #AfricanAmerican from my mother's side and #AfroHaitian from my father's side. I believe that my biggest thing about #beingmultiracial is that it's hard #beingmixed race with a skintone as #brown as mine. Growing up when it was known I was #Haitian and I was bombarded with Haitian stereotypes such as "Do you do voodoo?" Or "Speak creole!" When people find out I'm #Afroindigenous it feels suffocating because I used to feel I'm not #native enough to claim my great grandmother afro- indigenous lineage. Growing up in the #Black community showed me how much #colorism impacts the mindset of many #mixedAfricanAmerican kids. At some point i didn't want to tell people I was Haitian because I felt as if I didn't deserve it. Or that I shouldn't claim the lineage that my great grandmother has given to my grandmother, to my mother, who's given it to me. After a while I learned that its because I'm #mixed I'm able to unify the different cultures I'm born into. My darker shade doesn't erase what I am. Also to teach myself that there's more to me than the box I'm placed in." 🇭🇹🇺🇸🏳️🏴 #wcw #mixedgirlproblems https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce1n8x5u9BC/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Relations of House Velaryon: House Locke
Lord Ondrew Locke Once one of the most sought after strategists and warrior of the North, Ondrew has since retired to Oldcastle to live our the rest of his days, toothless and gray. Despite this, he's still bold and outspoken, being fiercely loyal to the Starks despite being in Bolton hands.
Ser Donnel Locke The youngest and only son to make it to adulthood of Lord Ondrew Locke. Quick witted and skilled with a sword, Ser Donnel is one of Robb Stark's sworn swords, slain along with the King at the Red Wedding. Before his death, he married Lady Laenaera Velaryon. Though it was a political match, it is said the two were happy either way.
Lady Sybelle Locke Wife of Robett Glover and Lady of Deepwood Motte. With the same sharp mind as her aged father, Lady Sybelle is a force to be reckoned with at the best of times. During the siege of Deepwood Motte by the Ironborn, Lady Sybelle and her children are taken captive. She is freed by Stannis Baratheon.
Robb Locke The only son of Donnel and his lady wife, Laenaera, before his murder at the Twins. Named for Robb Stark, Robb is a shy boy, preferring reading and other quiet activities instead of the usual antics of the other boys of Oldcastle. Robb never met his father before his death.

trying to articulate how i feel about the jose barreiro "inside every m//stizo there is either one dead indian or an indian waiting to re-emerge" quote bc. of course him belonging to the taínos that have like. very limited remnants. yes i understand the encouragement of mixed race dominicans and puerto ricans etc to connect with their more distant history since it was forcibly removed from them but at the same time. for one thing why is the emphasis on m//stizos. there are afro-indigenous ppl. actually most dominicans of indigenous descent are more black than white. and with that it feels more like.... absolving white caribbeans w/ indigenous ancestry of their whiteness. yk. and for a lot of them they have much more personal connection to the colonizer than the colonized and its like. who has the right to id with the oppressed. maybe they do maybe they dont idk

when I drew this comic 3 years ago I had NO idea how far it would reach. I'm happy to finally share a corrected version with proper abbreviations, and even MORE state names of indigenous origin ♥️
however, the goal of this comic was to inspire people to do your OWN research on indigenous history. To question everything we have been taught, and everything that has been pointedly left out. This erasure, this “forgetting”, of history is not just of the past… it is happening now. - Across so-called Canada, the US, and US-occupied islands, native women are victims of murder at 10-12x the rate of non-native people, and are the most likely to go missing without being searched for by the law. - Native reservations have the highest rates of poverty in the US, with over HALF of tribal homes with no access to clean water (with more joining this list by the year) - Native people are 6-10x more likely to be unhoused than the rest of the population, and native teens suffer suicide rates higher than any other demographic. This list of modern day genocide goes on (thank you for compiling @theindigenousanarchist <3) and yet take a look at those environmental stats!
Native people manage to do SO much for the planet as a whole - thanklessly - and with all this stacked against them. Don't even get me started on kin fighting in south america. Could you imagine if there was help? #landback is resistance to genocide, and it is the key to saving our warming earth.
So look into it and the other hashtags, cuz a cartoon goose ain't a substitute for a proper education. Love to my grandparents who always kept a map of tribal territories of turtle island on their wall, to speaking on our Tsalagi & Saponi heritage. Love & solidarity forever, happy research, and happy #indigenouspeoplesday

(Also, if you care to support the artist, I'm publishing a book ! and writing another - a fantastical afroindigenous graphic novel - that I post exclusively about with tons of other art on my patreon.)

doberbutts is not native lmao he identifies as black and black alone until suddenly being part-part-part “native” suits him (like when suddenly he was so loud and proud of his “native” background when he wanted to throw around how he’s also indigenous like the palestine people in an argument)
Hey do me a favor and unfollow and/or block me, we don’t welcome anti-Black people here! Even a quick search shows you’re completely wrong and he’s been vocally Native on here for almost a decade.
For my followers who aren’t shitheads and confused: afroindigenous/afronative people are Indigenous regardless of BQ and frequently have to jump through an extreme amount of hoops just to get basic recognition within their Nation. There is a lot of anti-blackness in Native communities, both online and off, and it is difficult for Black Natives to find community and belonging. These scare quotes and dogwhistles are just that: someone telling on themselves. Being anti-Black to Black Native people is, itself, anti-Indigenous.
