You are under pressure as you try to fight off the orcs. How long will you last? Will you finally end the secrecy and call on your dragon? What shall Aelon do to rally the rest of the people to help you?

Chapter 19 (Final)

Warnings: violence, blood, cuts, and bruises, mentions of dying people, mentions of becoming a thrall, despair, Aelon decides to do something, burning, mentions of being burned alive, and might or not might be a good ending, exposed secrets.

Screams of dying men and the clashing of swords echoed across the battlefield. Blood dressed the gray ground, and you along with Chief Baelen fought all you could to keep the orcs from reaching the people. 

You stabbed one of the orcs down, and then quickly threw a spear at another, making the wretched creature shriek while falling to the ground dead. 

You observed the situation. The men were holding the line all they could while you and the others killed all who managed to get past. The archers on the hills were shooting, but slowly dropping down dead by the archers on the opposite side. Things were looking awful. Sooner or later, the orc army was going to break through. 

It did not help, especially when you heard word that the pass had been blocked, making the people unable to flee. You were trapped. It seemed imminent that this was the moment where you all would either die or become thralls to these creatures. There was no way you could beat them unless all the people came to fight with you, or if you finally decided to reveal your secret and summon Baleria to your aid. 

You then noticed an orc coming at you, but before you could do anything, a dagger was thrown into the orc over your shoulder. You glanced toward Chief Baelen who had been fighting alongside you. 

“Stay focused, lady (Name)! This will not get better if we just stand around!” Baelen answered with a smile while fighting the orcs. 

You turned your attention to the next orc that came at you. 

“Well, if we do not get reinforcement or the people find a way to get past the blockade. Things are going to get bad either way!” you yelled while killing the orcs. 

Baelen laughed. “Well, let’s focus on keeping them at bay then!” he said as he fought beside you. 

At the rock blockage, panic spread among the people, who desperately attempted to climb over the rocks, only to find it nearly impossible. Some even tried scaling the rocky sides, but their hazardous size made it impossible as well. Aelon watched with a sense of dread as Helena and Mika attempted to comfort their mother, while the twins' parents mournfully hugged Ramuel and Samuel. Eweniel held his hand tightly as they both grappled with fear over the dire situation.

“I guess this is it. This is where we are either going to die or become thralls to the dark lord,” Eweniel uttered. 

“There has to be something that can save us,” Aelon stated. 

“How? There are too many of them.” Eweniel questioned. 

“The chiefs and the rest of the people need to help (Name) to fight them off. If all of us would fight, then maybe we could survive,” Aelon uttered. 

“Well, it does not look like those chiefs are going to do much. They seemed to be wandering like headless chickens at the front,” Dwenn mentioned as he looked toward the front. 

Aelon thought to himself before jumping down from the wagon. 

“Aelon! Where are you going?” Eweniel called out as they watched him run through the people. “The chiefs need to help (Name). It’s the only way!” Aelon called back as he ran past the people. 

“I go after him,” Dwenn said and climbed down the wagon, following after Aelon as the little boy pushed through the crowds. 

Aelon apologized as he ran past and tried to avoid hitting the people while trying to find the chiefs, who were wondering what to do with the blockage. Dwenn managed to keep up with him despite his leg and slowness. 

Soon, Aelon managed to locate the three chiefs who had overseen the decision to proceed through the pass despite your warnings. 

“Chief Horren!” Aelon called out to the man. 

The three men gave their attention to him as he stepped before them. 

“You need to help (Name) and the rest of the men at the back. If we all fight together we might be able to survive this,” Aelon explained. 

Horren sighed. “Get back to your family boy. We will figure out a way to escape,” he said dismissively. 

“My family is currently fighting the orcs, trying to protect us and buy us some time, and it's already been half an hour. We can’t escape from here. The only solution is to fight the orcs,” Aelon said. 

“There are too many of them. Even if we all fight with all our force, there is no way we can beat them all,” Horren said, his voice heavy with despair.

"With (Name)'s help, you can. You just have to try," Aelon urged, his tone determined despite the dire circumstances. "Whatever it might be, you have to do something, or we will die waiting for you to come up with a solution," he added, his words a desperate plea for action.

Horren looked at him softly. 

“Listen, boy… there is nothing we can do. I admire your determination, but we are clearly beyond saving at this point,” Horren stated. 

Aelon looked at him appalled. 

“So, your solution is just to do nothing?!” Aelon asked. 

“We will either become dead or thralls if we do nothing, but you think that’s acceptable. You just wanna stay put and die by doing nothing?” Aelon raised his voice at the older man. 

“Hold your tongue boy! This is a chief you’re talking to,” one of the chiefs snapped at him. 

“It’s fine,” Horren sighed. 

“Boy…” he said. 

“Aelon. My name is Aelon Targaryen,” Aelon answered. “(Name) is my older sister,” he added. 

“Aelon…” Horren started. “We are grateful for the time your sister has bought us. But in this situation, my hands are tied. There is nothing we can do to save ourselves from this predicament. It is for the best that you return to your friends and family and pray for a miracle. I am sorry.” Horren explained. 

Aelon stared at them quietly. You had taught him that some people acted differently in the face of death and desperation, but he never imagined meeting people who would easily give up. 

Dwenn, who had been standing beside Aelon, scoffed. “Some fearless chiefs you are,” he uttered, gaining Aelon’s and the chiefs' attention. 

“I have met my fair share of men in my life, but I have never met people who acted tough then became wimps in the face of desperation,” he started. 

“When our village was attacked, in the face of destruction and death, (Name), took control and defended us from Morgoth’s orcs and wolves. It was thanks to her we managed to escape,” he said. “And even now, she fights the orcs, even when the situation is hopeless, giving her everything to give us more time,” 

Eweniel appeared beside Aelon. 

Dwenn then grabbed an axe from the ground. “I would rather die on the battlefield beside someone like her than stay here and accept my fate, dying beside cowardly men like you three,” he pointed at the chiefs. 

“I would gladly give my other eye and leg if it meant helping her. I will not abandon her and let her efforts go to waste,” he said. 

“Even if we all fight. There is still nothing we can do to change the outcome of the battle,” Horren said back. 

“No,” Aelon said after contemplating his thoughts. “There is something that can save us,” he said, then ran to the side of the pass, climbing up one of the hills with Eweniel. 

“What are you going to do?” Eweniel asked as they stood on the hill and Aelon looked toward the higher mountains. 

Aelon looked carefully across the sky, reaching out toward his dragon through his bond. His dragon responded. 

“Well… remember when you suspected I was keeping a secret from you?” Aelon asked as he brought his hand around his mouth. 

“Yeah?” Eweniel answered. 

“Well, today I’m going to tell you what that secret is,” he said. 

Aelon then took a deep breath. 

“[Falconer! Come to me!]” 

You breathed heavily after a whole hour had passed and the orcs kept coming. The black blood of the orcs trickled down from the Night’s Whisperer’s steel. Cuts and bruises throbbed around your face and places where you ended up being cut. It did not help that fatigue was beginning to take a toll on you. You have been fighting nonstop, trying to kill as many orcs as you could and avoid being killed, but things were not turning better. 

Despite your efforts to fend off the orcs, the situation only worsened. After an hour of continuous fighting, the line finally crumbled. The archers stationed on the hill were picked off one by one, and now the rest of the swordsmen were butchered, leaving only you and Chief Baelen back-to-back, facing the horde. Despite his efforts to remain composed, Chief Baelen showed signs of weariness and injury, his attempts at a smile betraying the toll the battle had taken on him.

“It seems this is the end of the road for us,” Baelen chuckled as you two leaned against each other, holding your weapons. “Not too bad though. We managed to last quite long with such a small force against an army,” he stated. 

“You fight well. Now I’m kinda mad that we did not go with the mountain road plan. Might have saved us the trouble,” he chuckled. 

“You too. But this might not be over for us yet,” you replied. 

“Unfortunately, we are out of men. If Horren and those other idiots would just come to help us like we asked, then maybe we would have had the chance,” Baelen said. 

You then glanced toward the mountains. There was no other way. You had to summon Baleria or you would be killed. You closed your eyes and reached out to your dragon through your bond. 

“Bloody hell. Now Horren and the others decided to come help us out,” Baelen said, disrupting your thoughts.

You saw the other chiefs and people charging to help you. Your ears then caught a sound in the air. It sounded like a heavy flap of wings. Your eyes widened. It couldn’t be… 

“Get down!” You pushed Baelen against the ground as a pillar of fire fell upon the orcs, burning them around you. The hot hair brushed above you while the orcs began screaming in pain as they burned alive. 

A large shadow flew over you and from the smoke, rose Falconer. 

Aelon looked down from the saddle after burning the orcs around you and Baelen. You looked back at him as he then glided down toward the orcs. 

“[Dracarys!]” Aelon yelled and Falconer breathed fire upon the orcs, chasing them away from you. 

The chiefs and the people came charging at the orcs, their voices blending into a unified battle cry. You even saw Dwenn charging with an axe. 

“Well, I’ll be damned,” Baelen said as you two got up from the ground. He stared at Falconer and Aelon as the pair fired on the orc army. 

Falconer roared as he swooped down, grabbing one of the trolls and tossing the creature into the air. 

The orc army began to scatter from Falconer and the people’s counterattack. You and Baelen quickly joined the fight, striking down any orc that dared to stand against you. Meanwhile, Aelon descended from the sky with Falconer, unleashing a torrent of flames that engulfed the archers on the hills. The orcs began to falter and retreat, their ranks thinning as fear gripped their hearts.

After twenty minutes of intense fighting and relentless burning of the enemy, the orc army began to dwindle as they retreated from the pass. Fueled by determination, you and the rest of the warriors gave chase, driving the orcs back until the orcs had left and the pass was free once more. With the threat vanquished, the people erupted into cheers of victory, relieved to have emerged triumphant from the harrowing ordeal.

You watched as the people cheered, happy to have won and remained alive. You then focused on Aelon and Falconer as they circled in the sky, visible to all the people on the ground. 

“(Name) Targaryen!” Horren stomped toward you. 

You sighed, knowing what was to come. 

The cheering ceased as all eyes turned toward you and the dragon flying above. Horren's voice reverberated with anger as he directed his glare at you.

"Can you explain why you and your little brother have a dragon?" Horren demanded, pointing accusingly at the dragon in the sky. Glancing at Aelon, who looked down at you with concern, you attempted to offer him an assuring smile, knowing this moment was inevitable.

Your secret was now exposed.

..... This isn't fair like reading the miscarriage warning then reading about how happy everyone is that the reader is pregnant how dare u play with my emotions like this

I’m sorry but like- bruh, it’s about to get worse- major angst coming in this ask, like all the triggers- but also I’m not going to go into a lot of detail because of how heavy these topics are. this is also the end of like- my prewritten content for this. trigger warning: mentions of miscarriage, injury, rape, and depictions of PTSD. 

So anyway, after yoongi comes home injured, Jungkook leaves to take his place and control of the armies- he’s the only one who Yoongi trusts in his Infirm state. but the war is almost over and the other army is scattered without their commander. namjoon sends back a few messages that allude to the fact that the expected peace talks to come in the next few weeks. Hoseok too- sends back word that planting should resume once the weather allows. but in the north- as winter resumes it’s trudge. the city seems lighter, almost relaxed.

they shouldn’t have relaxed.

I don’t want to go too gory- but basically one night an elite group of assassins from the other side sneaks in and steals the reader in retaliation for killing their youngest alpha. They don’t get far, and they don’t end up being able to take Seokjin only because he manages to sound the alarm. 

they take her on the run and even though they only have her for an evening they do enough damage. they might not have physically taken you but. that night, something is lost. 

By the time Yoongi manages to track them down, she’s already been raped and her inner omega is so traumatized by it that she loses the baby. Yoongi goes absolutely feral- not even shifting before he rips out the assassins throats with his teeth and tearing him to shreds. all the while you’re just- staring into space, body small and cold in the snow with not even enough energy to sit up after having fought for so long, and though yoongi carries you back as quickly as his injuries will allow- it’s already too late.

when Namjoon, Seokjin, and Jungkook find out what’s happened, they nearly completely abandon the war effort. Jungkook is emboldened and hardened by the loss, and wipes out their forces with ruthless efficiency, taking back the pack lands within a few days. He doesn't stop killing until namjoon goes onto the battlefield to take him off of it- and tell him they’re going home- where they’re really needed now. 

Namjoon has the other alphas from the pack put to death for hurting his family,  they ride home and leave the army behind them to catch up, riding as quick as they can. When they finally get into the palace walls Jungkook runs to find you, finally finding you in the garden, crying in relief that you’re not in a bed somewhere dying like the message had made it seem, sitting at one of the tables with untouched tea and lunch in front of you- he shouts your name- breaks out into a sprint, the first smile on his face in weeks- because if you’re alive and healthy he can fix it- he knows he can- he can do anything with you and the pack by his side- and a few strides away from you he’s intercepted by Taehyung who is quick to grab him around the middle.

They argue- Jungkook yells and thrashes, so close but so far from where you sit, but quiets when you turn to look at him. your eyes- you don’t look like you’re really hearing it- really seeing it. really there at all. you only look at him for a moment before you’re closing your eyes and leaning back in the chair again, your body barely anything other than limp where you lean, like you wouldn’t be able to keep yourself up if it weren’t for the chair.  

You might have lived through what happened, but you’re a ghost of who you once where. You don’t speak- to anyone really, not anymore- you barely even nod or shake your head on a good day. The first few weeks are tense and sad- with you barely eating and the others scrambling to keep the kingdom afloat while dealing with the loss. 

Seokjin is your constant shadow, always making sure that the few chosen omega staff are treating you with the utmost gentleness and keeping the alpha guards away from you, never farther in than the wall that encircles the garden and the palace. it seems to make you shake and hyperventilate to have any alpha but the members of your own pack close- and even that's somewhat of a stretch- you’re still unable to handle most affection from them the majority of the time. The only ones you let even touch you are Seokjin and Taehyung. Namjoon tries once, but you don’t respond, nothing beyond your trembling when he tries to touch your hand. 

here are moments when they see whatever blockage stays in your mind to block you from the trauma of that night, moments when you start to shake and it won't stop when your eyes turn lucid and clear and you start to sob, and then the next moment, you’re as placid as a lake and twice as calm. it happens around Jungkook once, and one moment he’s cupping your cheeks in his hands and the next you’re pushing him away so hard, scrambling back to get as far away from him as possible. Taehyung putting himself between the both of you hands out, voice low and soothing, “it’s okay, Jungkook didn’t mean it,” 

yoongi- yoongi is a worse story entirely, he’s still healing but it’s going badly. the night he tracked you down he reaggravated his broken leg and did permanent damage too it. he’ll likely never walk without a limp again. You refuse to see yoongi, and will actually stand and walk away if he tries to talk to you- which in the first few days is as dangerous to you as it is for him. 

The others try to talk to him about what happened, but beyond the details of the killing, he dosent want to- he dosent want to tell them how the midwife had tried to help you through the night, how much blood there had been in the snow and on yoongi- how much of your blood had been on his hands, how damaged you’d been, how you’d cried and cried into Seokjin’s chest until the doctor had given you a mild sedative so that you’d sleep and stop panicking, the blood vessels in your eyes burst from the strength of your sobs. how after it, you’d woken up and been like this. 

Seokjin tells them eventually, standing by the door, putting his body in between them and where you sleep. later, he’ll go to you too and curl up around you and hold you when you jolt awake, keeping you tethered. he needs to be strong for you now- he needs to take care of you as the lead omega, it’s his responsibility- you’d endured the worst pain an omega could endure. 

Seokjin thinks it should have been him who was taken, he was the one who’d had the more of a connection to the old royal family- then at least- you wouldn’t have lost the pup.  

“What do you want me to tell you!?” Yoongi yells, his handbook slipping off the side of his shoulder, showing the bandages wrapping his chest. he knows he shouldn’t yell- he could end up coughing up blood but he can’t keep it in any longer, can’t be quiet even though you’re asleep in the other room. he’d watched around the corner as Seokjin had helped you, he knows- you’d have stayed up looking at the falling snow in the garden all night if no one had gone to get you if Seokjin hadn’t helped you with a soft hand on your arm, Taehyung not far away, ready to rush forward with your nightclothes when Seokjin finally gets you to accept his help and stop pushing his hands away. 

“Do you want me to tell you that I wasn’t fast enough, that I let her be taken- that I let her be hurt while i was here? that I’m a shit alpha and I wish I never was one to begin with- do you want me to tell you it was all my fault? because it was. Hoseok- it’s my fault, it’s all my fucking fault that our baby is dead and she’s” he breaks off, sobbing when he thinks of you, oh you, his sweetest love, sweeter than the cherry blossoms and twice as beautiful, and now- he’d failed, failed to protect you from the world.

“You want someone to scream and yell at and hurt- you should hurt me because I’m the one to blame for all of this”  Hoseok pulls yoongi close, leaning in close to scent him, Hoseok’s throat wet with Yoongi’s tears, they hold onto each other sobbing. Hoseok’s hands tightening in Yoongi’s back after a moment, “Hyung, you need to sit, you’ve been standing for too long come here-” 

That night, they end up talking it out, they’d have you here for it but mostly- they need to discuss you. They don’t know how to help you so they’ll settle now- for keeping you alive and safe. Seokjin ends up crying into Jungkook’s shoulder, Taehyung rubbing circles onto his back. Namjoon’s had tightens so much around his tea that the cup shatters, his hand turning into the clawed form of his wolf before he reigns in his temper. for there is no one left to kill to sate his anger, no one left to be mad at except himself. and he won’t blame yoongi- no matter what the alpha says. it’s not his fault. 

(I wish i was never an alpha to begin with, is what yoongi said that night. and the moon who looks over all of you hears that and remembers it for a later date. in the next life, she’ll be sure to make yoongi more gentle, the life of an alpha might be too much for him, his soul so soft around the edges)

  physicians at the time were exposed on the spot to perform procedures on the battlefield,  and as a result,  were at times either lacking supplies or proper training.  wounds were dressed with basic materials like honey or clay in an effort to prevent infection,  and blood was staunched by covering the wound or tightly tying bandages around the limb to build pressure.  while both infection and a blockage of blood flow are extremely painful,  there’s no real way to distinguish between different types of pain in the middle of war.  extended periods of neglect may cause necrosis,  or the death of tissue,  and require amputation to save the rest of the limb and body.

One of the reasons for the unusual manifestations of COVID-19 may simply be the more than four million confirmed cases worldwide of a wholly new illness. Some of these symptoms have appeared during other viral infections—for example, researchers have seen blood clots in some patients infected with the original SARS coronavirus and the H1N1 influenza virus. “There are so many cases in the world now that we may be picking up on minor variants,” says Stanley Perlman, a professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of Iowa. “It makes you wonder, if in other infections, you look at two [million] to three million [cases], how many of these kinds of events would occur. Or is [the situation] really special for COVID-19?”

Scientists are still trying to pin down the exact mechanism underlying the wide range of complications. There seem to be two key leading suspects, however. The first is the immune system’s defensive inflammatory response to foreign invaders such as viruses and bacteria. That reaction, in turn, may lead to the second culprit: blood clotting. The disease’s impact on blood vasculature appears to underlie some of the more bewildering effects COVID-19 patients encounter.

Reports of clotting-related complications such as pulmonary embolism and stroke among COVID-19 patients in intensive care units have come from several countries, including China, France, Italy and the U.S. The overall frequency of such issues remains unclear, but some assessments suggest that they appear in as many as 30 percent of critically ill patients. In rare cases, strokes have turned up in people in their 30s and 40s, alarming doctors.

“We’re seeing lots of different coagulation abnormalities” in the patients admitted to the ICU, says Margaret Pisani, an associate professor specializing in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the Yale School of Medicine. “We’ve seen strokes, myocardial infarctions, pulmonary embolisms—clots in places that we don’t normally see in otherwise healthy people who come in with a viral infection.”

Clotting-related issues are not specific to COVID-19, says Yvonne Maldonado, a professor of pediatric infectious diseases at Stanford University. A condition known as disseminated intravascular coagulation, in which abnormal clotting occurs throughout the blood vessels, has previously been reported in patients with infectious diseases who experience sepsis (a life-threatening immune response to a contagion). “What’s unusual here is that it is seems to happen with this disease more often than with other diseases,” she says.

In addition to clots in large blood vessels, researchers have reported clotting within smaller blood vessels known as capillaries. COVID-19 “is a vascular problem” says Frank Ruschitzka, a cardiologist at University Hospital Zurich. “The lung is the main battlefield, but it’s a disease of the blood vessels.”

Scientists have yet to pin down the cause of the clotting. Inflammation appears to be a likely culprit, however. Researchers have found, for example, the presence of complement proteins—molecules involved in activating the immune response—within clotted blood vessels. Across many of COVID-19’s myriad symptoms, the common mechanism appears to be the inflammation of the endothelium, the layer of cells that make up the inner lining of blood vessels, says Luciano Gattinoni, a visiting professor in the departments of anesthesiology and intensive care at the University Medical Center Göttingen in Germany. “As the endothelium is present everywhere, you can explain why the symptoms are so different.”

Some of the mysterious symptoms linked to COVID-19 start to make sense when they are viewed as manifestations of a vascular disorder. Some evidence suggests that SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus behind COVID-19, can directly attack the endothelial cells. In April Ruschitzka and his colleagues published a paper chronicled three autopsies in the Lancet that found the presence of viral particles in the endothelia of kidneys and an accumulation of inflammatory immune cells within the endothelia of various organs, including the kidney, heart and lungs. Ruschitzka, however, says that that the body’s immune response, not the virus itself, is the more likely explanation for the excessive clotting. “What we see everywhere is pronounced inflammation,” he adds.

Still, it is too early to rule out direct effects of the virus. “There are a lot of conditions that cause inflammation where you don’t see these kinds of clotting disorders,” Hotez says, raising the prospect that the virus may be directly involved in spurring blood abnormalities. The diversity of symptoms, he suggests, may have to do with the ACE2 receptors that SARS-CoV-2 binds to. These receptors are present on the surfaces of cells of multiple organs affected by COVID-19.

Alex Richter, an immunologist at the University of Birmingham in England, notes that the timing of a symptom may hint at whether it is caused by the virus itself or the body’s immune response to it. A frequent early symptom—the loss of taste and smell—may more likely be a direct effect of the virus than the clotting complications or Kawasaki-like symptoms that appear later. “There’s almost a time line of how we’re getting these symptoms and how likely they are to be a direct effect of the virus or because of a hyperimmune response,” she says.

Richter notes that what is particularly strange about the Kawasaki-like symptoms seen in children is that they seem to appear several weeks after initial exposure to the virus. She and her team are currently investigating samples from affected children to pinpoint how the immune system might be generating these effects. So far, they have found evidence that these individuals possess antibodies suggestive of a well-developed immune response, indicating that the infection likely occurred weeks prior to the onset of symptoms. Richter says this observation is distinct from what has been seen in adult cases, in which the immune system seems to be reacting much more immediately to the contagion.
