Symbols for the Chiss Ascendency and Nine Ruling Families
Tumblr media
For thousands of years it has been an island of calm within the Chaos. It is a center of power, a model of stability, and a beacon of integrity. The Nine Ruling Families guard it from within; the Expansionary Defense Fleet guards it from without. Its neighbors are left in peace, its enemies are left in ruin. It is light and culture and glory. It is the Chiss Ascendancy.

Original Character Design: Ilgyapat
Mid Warrior Boadil’gya’pat
(Ilgyapat) [ILL-gyah-pat] she/her
The Boadil family has a reputation for flightiness and inconsistency. This is a reputation Ilgyapat has spent her entire career attempting to avoid inheriting, going as far as to volunteer herself for night watch regularly in order to prove her dedication and diligence. On the politically oblivious Ratite, she is finally able to relax a little of this vigilance, and is taking full advantage of the relaxed uniform policy for night crew in order to explore her personal style.
The illustration below was created using @/djarn's Picrew, which can be found here.

[Image ID: An illustration made using Picrew. The subject is a young Chiss woman, with light blue skin and eyes with red sclera and black rectangular pupils. Her curly cerulean hair is worn down, with bangs covering her forehead. She has on winged eyeliner and black lipstick, and there is a pale X-shaped scar on her right cheek. She is wearing a blank tank top underneath a sheer long-sleeved shirt patterned with gold crescent moons, and a black lace choker. She also has gold drop earrings and a stud labret piercing, and she wears a monocle over her right eye. The background is a blue-grey square that has a gold circle with gold rays in the center behind the subject. End ID.]

Patriarchs of the Nine Ruling Families (And Three Former Ruling Families)
Gonna talk about the Chiss Patriarchs of the Nine Ruling Families and Three Former Ruling Families. Some of these aren't OCs but the designs and personalities I'm giving are all non-canon soooo...
DISCLAIMER: Some personalities are off canon, kay? I'm very aware that they are, this is my take on them.
Nine Ruling Families:
First of: Patriarch Saarke of the Ufsa Family
Tumblr media
He is usually the calm and collected one. And he's a traditionalist. He dislikes many things out of tradition. He doesn't have the strongest opinions on his rivalling families, but he treats the other Patriarchs with respect enough.
Next is Patriarch Zififirenc of the Irizi Family
Tumblr media
He is the serious patriarch who cares only if protocol is being done correctly and smoothly with proper authorization. He can be quite a traditionalist himself but not as much. He doesn't fool around, hates lollygagging honestly
Next is Patriarch Kloirvursi of the Dasklo Family
Tumblr media
He is light-hearted and usually open to new traditions but sticking close to old ones firmly. He is one of the wisest among the Patriarchs and is willing to give advice to them whenever necessary, or if it is in terms of either adding a new tradition. He dislikes breaking an old tradition, however.
Next is Patriarch Rivlex of the Clarr Family
Tumblr media
He is an intelligent one, usually the one whose skills are tested in terms of solving the economic crisis of the Ascendancy. Though his skills are great, some still doubt his intelligence, but he shrugs off those doubts and murmurs about him and just decides to help if he wants to.
Next is Patriarch Furfursi or the Chaf Family
Tumblr media
He is very vain and mostly cares about his fit in an event or so. He usually organizes the Ascending balls and is always seen to make sure everyone will look gorgeous enough to appear but never out stage him. He always had the tendency to steal the spotlight in any gathering and will immediately be an enemy of anyone who steals his spotlight.
Next is Patriarch Khtrinek of the Plikh Family
Tumblr media
He isn't that much into tradition as the others are, though he is still accustomed to specific traditions. He speaks empty from time to time, barely showing emotion while he speaks and is most of the time lurking around planets when he has no duties to fulfil.
Next is Patriarch Ilarga of the Boadil Family
Tumblr media
He strictly cares for property damage and worth than traditions. He makes sure that all of the allies of his family have the finest of the finest, and he hates anyone who even attempts to damage any of the properties he sends to his people and his allies. He has a strong dislike for his rival families, however, but says nothing about it usually.
Next is Patriarch Thooraki of the Mitth Family
Tumblr media
He is usually a non-traditionalist, though he still respects tradition as much as a he could. He is a little Rebel from the strict traditions that he longed and usually breaks out from. He almost never raises his voice, but when he does, it sends shivers down the spines of his enemies and rivals enough to clamp their mouths shut.
Next is Patriarch Iceesat of the Obbic Family
Tumblr media
He is a non-traditionalist to the core and the youngest among the Patriarchs. He constantly breaks his boundaries as a Patriarch and is seen prioritizing to style his hair more than care about his clothes or appearances. He is especially open to alien interactions, much more open and energetic and outgoing than the other Patriarchs
Former In The Ruling Families
This is Patriarch Yokado of the Coduyo Family
Tumblr media
He is a traditionalist of his own family and usually keeps to himself. His words are soft and quiet, even as he argued. He is the only Patriarch to never lose his temper (yet) and is by far the only one approachable if the other Patriarchs throw a hissy fit in front of children.
Next is Patriarch Lamiov of the Stybla Family
Tumblr media
He is a straight forward one who is always open to new traditions and suggestions. He tends to break some traditions and can be seen usually out of his Mansion rather than staying indoors. He immerses himself with nature at the most, allowing things to happen as they should and only giving little to no comment unless necessary.
Lastly, we have Patriarch Lakencill of the Xodlak Family
Tumblr media
He is a bitter, self-centred Chiss who often challenges the opinions of the other Patriarchs. He is the oldest among them, but he doesn't use his knowledge to provide any sorts of wisdom. Instead, he wails and scowls, always claiming that the Xodlak Family should have stayed in the ranks of the Nine Ruling Families.

Here's a random assortment of quotes I collected in relation to Thrawn, the Chiss Ascendancy, the Grysks, and the Unknown Regions that caught my eye during my read-through of their canon material. Admittedly, having finished typing them all out - they're mostly focused on the Ascendancy though the other topics of mentioned do get their own individual spotlights, even if they are a bit more dim Hardly would I consider this to be an exhaustive exploration into either Thrawn as a character or the Ascendancy as a society, but rather minute things that pinged my attention as I read HEAVY SPOILERS AHEAD, I can't stress enough to try and give the books themselves a try before reading through these and, should you choose to continue otherwise, please read through them at your own risk:

- "Interesting offer," Anakin said. And now, finally, he was close enough. Taking a deep breath, he stretched out to the Force. The intruder wasn't human, though of course Anakin had already guessed that. He was near-human, though, like many other species in the Republic. But the texture of his mind was unlike anything Anakin had ever touched before. It was neat and well ordered, the patterns of though flowing smoothly and precisely in ways not unlike those of scientists or mathematicians. But the content of that flow, and the muted emotions accompanying it, were completely opaque. It was like a neat and precise array of unfamiliar numbers. (Thrawn Alliances, p. 36) -
"I understood travel into the Unknown Regions was difficult." "Indeed," Thrawn said. "The hyperlanes are few and not easy to traverse. But system jumps are possible if a traveler has sufficient time and is content with traversing limited distances." "And if one was not content with limited distances?" "One would need a careful study of the border," Thrawn said. "Millenia ago a set of chained supernova explosions throughout this particular region threw planet- and moon-sized masses at high speeds across the stars. The movements of those masses continually alter the hyperlanes, changing the paths in ways that are difficult to calculate. Other phenomena in other parts of the border created similar borders. The hyperlanes that remain largely intact are beset with other dangers." (A Conversation between Thrawn and Vader, Thrawn Alliances, p. 64) -
"You will first appreciate that this is among the most closely guarded secrets of the Chiss Ascendancy," he said. "As I noted when we first reached this region of space, there are few stable hyperlanes into and through the Unknown Regions. Because of this, most species stay close to their own systems, preferring to travel along shorter lanes and unwilling to take the time necessary for the much slower jump-by-jump travel." "But the Chiss do not wish to be so limited?" "Indeed not," Thrawn said, a hint of contempt creeping into his voice. "For all their pronouncements of non-interference in others' activities, the Aristocras have a deep desire to know what those activities consist of. Our scouts range far and wide, entering even into the parts of space once claimed by the Republic and now claimed by the Empire." He gestured. "As you well know.""
"I have been so informed by the Emperor," Vader said stiffly. Again, Thrawn was poking uncomfortably close to the edge. "Tell me about the children." "We do not have nav computers able to plot safe paths through the chaos of the Unknown Regions hyperspace," Thrawn said. "Nor do the Chiss produce appreciable numbers of Force-sensitives, though we call their gift Third Sight. But when such rare individuals are born, they come to us with but one ability, that of precognition." And suddenly Vader understood. The same ability that allowed him to peer into the future far enough to know when and where an attack was coming was being used by the Chiss to sense dangers looming ahead of a ship in time to avoid them. "They navigate your ships," he said. "Finding and mapping temporary hyperlanes even as they steer new paths along them." "Exactly," Thrawn waved a hand in the direction of the girls' quarters. "You can now appreciate the reason for our secrecy. An enemy wishing to duplicate our success cannot simply steal a computer or computer program. He must take rare and precious living beings from us." His eyes narrowed. "That cannot be allowed." (Thrawn Alliances, p. 352) -
There was a flicker in Thrawn's sense. Vader looked up, to see a small smile on his face. "Do you find this amusing, Admiral?" he challenged. "No, not at all, my lord," Thrawn hastened to assure him. "I was simply recalling a memory. I told you the Chiss call this talent Third Sight. What I hadn't yet spoken of is the title these navigators are given once they take their posts." "Which is?" "The Cheunh word is ozly-eschembo," Thrawn said. "In basic it translates to 'sky-walker.' " Another small smile. "You can imagine my momentary surprise when I first encountered General Anakin Skywalker." (Thrawn Alliances, p. 360) -
For another moment Thrawn remained silent. Then he took a slow, measured breath. "Yes," he said. "Though ironically such devices are of no use to our own people. Yes it was a Chiss shuttle you saw, my lord. But my message to the Grysks, and its importance to the Empire still remain." "Do they?" Vader countered. "Was your message to warn the Grysks away from the Empire? Or was it a warning to whatever group of Chiss are working with them that you are aware of their presence?" Thrawn smiled faintly. But Vader could sense the pain behind the smile. "Why can it not be both?" "Was it both?" Thrawn turned away. "There were stirrings of political conflict when I left my people for the Empire those many years ago," he said. "I assumed the Aristocras would settle their differences, as they have so many times before. This time, perhaps they could not. Or perhaps the Grysks have made deeper inroads into our culture than I'd hoped." Vader gazed at the Chiss, feeling the dark irony deep within him. "So you who have never hidden your contempt for the Republic's handling of the Clone Wars now stand on the edge of your own civil war?" "Or have already taken our first steps into it," Thrawn said. "If one side is already under the control of the Grysks..." He shook his head. "Your earlier though was perhaps closer to the mark than you knew. Perhaps the true purpose of closing the border is to prevent me from bringing the Empire against them." (Thrawn Alliances, p. 444) -
"Acknowledged," Eli called back, mentally rolling his eyes. The majority of Chiss names were composed of multiple syllables in three distinct parts, the first of which identified the person's family, the second of which was the given name, and the third of which reflected some social factor Eli hadn't yet figured out. Since using multisyllable titles all the time could seriously bog down conversations -and worse, timely military orders- the normal convention was to use core names for everything except in the most formal situations. (Thrawn Treason, p. 55) -
He turned, fixing her with such an intense look that she reflexively drew back a little. "What's happened to our capital, Ziara?" "The same thing that happened to the whole planet," Ziara said quietly. "I'm sorry - I shouldn't have done that to you, but you're not supposed to know." "To know what? That the people of Csilla are gone?" "Oh, they're not gone," she said. "Well, yes, most of them are, but the big exodus happened over a thousand years ago. What they taught you in school about how the changes in the sun's output and the slow freezing of the surface forced the population of Csilla underground is mostly true. What the histories leave out is that the numbers that moved below were a far cry from the four billion who'd been living here at the time." "Where did they go?" "Other planets," Ziara said. "Mostly Rentor, Avidich, and Sarvchi. The Syndicure and fleet headquarters were kept here, along with a lot of cargo and merchant facilities. Some of the families moved their homesteads to worlds where they already had strong presences, but most didn't want to leave Csilla entirely." "They also moved underground?" "Right," Ziara said. "My family's new homestead - well, new as of a thousand years ago - is in a huge cavern about two kilometers below the surface. Still on our same land, of course. The Irizi are a bit obsessive about territory and history." "So how many people actually live on Csilla?" "Sixty or seventy million," Ziara said. "Though all of the official records put the number at eight billion. " She waved at the city around them. "All of this is just for show." "For whom?" "Our visitors," she said. "Our alien trading partners." She felt her throat tighten. "Our enemies." "So a few continue to live aboveground to create the illusion," Thrawn murmured. "Light and heat are also maintained. Tube cars continue to travel across the remaining cities, pretending to be the traffic of a thriving population." He looked at Ziara . "I presume that on the far side our tube will descend into one of the tunnels?" She nodded. "There are a few hundred people in Csaplar at any given time. They're rotated out frequently so they don't have to put up with the conditions up here for very long. The rest of the city - the real city- is spread out in caverns, mostly concentrated around the Syndicure complex. More illusion for our diplomatic visitors." "And of course, most civilian visitors and merchants stay close to one of the spaceports," Thrawn said, nodding. "The activity there and round the government complex disguises the emptiness of the rest of the city. (Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising, p. 247) -
Thalias sighed. So embarrassing... "I was going to say you're ten now," she said. "And that reminded me that I missed your starday. I'm so sorry. With all that was going on last month, I just totally forgot it." "It's okay," Che'ri said, hunching her shoulders. Her voice was quiet, and Thalias could hear the distant hurt beneath it. "It's not like I remember being taken to the skylight to see my first star. And, you know. Parties and treasure-puzzle poems are mostly for little kids." (Starday Celebrations, Thrawn Ascendancy: Greater Good p. 25) -
"I'm currently on a wandering year, Councilor Lakuviv," Yoponek said. "I'm traveling the Ascendancy, seeking knowledge and experience outside the classroom walls." "Ah," Lakuviv said, nodding. Wandering years were a staple of some families: a gap year after basic schooling when a young person could travel and learn, meditate and self-examine, before returning to advanced schooling or other job training. Proponents of the program claimed it helped young people better decide their goals and talents in order to avoid false starts in future studies. Critics saw it as a waste of parental money, with little evidence that it did anything but allow the midager to wallow in an extended period of self-indulgent laziness. Cynics said its true purpose was to get them out form underfoot during what was traditionally the most pompous and condescending time in their lives. (Wandering Years & "Midagers", Thrawn Ascendancy: Greater Good p. 57)
- Sky-walker Bet'nih was at the navigation station, with Caregiver Soomret standing behind her. Their presence meant no non-bridge personnel were permitted. (Thrawn Ascendancy, Greater Good: p. 294) -
Jump to a system. Come out of hyperspace. Confirm position. Move through space-normal to the departure point necessary to line up for the next jump. Recheck possible hyperspace anomalies between jump points. Jump to the next point on the list, which was seldom more than five or six star systems away. Come out of hyperspace. Repeat.
(a description of jump-by-jump travel, Thrawn Ascendancy: Greater Good, p. 332) -
"Again, Pathfinder, calm yourself," Jixtus said, more severely this time. "The Grysks lay blame only where it's deserved, and only on those who fail us. Each of our servants is responsible solely for his own decisions and actions, not for another's" "Yes, sir," Qilori said, feeling his winglets and his tension subsiding. He'd never heard of a species by that name. Or a faction, if that's what they were. Or a combine, or a gang, or something else entirely. A name by itself really didn't contain much information. (Thrawn Ascendancy: Greater Good, p. 404) - Many years ago, when Senior Captain Xodlak'in'daro first joined the Expansionary Defense Fleet, there had been an elaborate ceremony to celebrate her rematching form her birth family to the Xodlak family. Lakinda didn't remember much about the ritual except that it was big and flashy and completely overwhelmed her simple commoner tastes. ... Of all the duties foisted on low-ranking family members, Aristocra Mitth'ras'safis had often heard the task of welcoming new merit adoptives to their formal rematching dinner was one of the worst. The newcomers were either highly skilled additions to the Mitth, in which case they tended to have an overblown opinion of themselves and their value; or they were freshly initiated into the Ascendancy military. Nearly all of the blood, cousins, and ranking distants opted out of reception duty, leaving most of the burden to fall on Trial-borns and other merit adoptives, none of whom had enough pull to avoid it. (Rematching Parties, Thrawn Ascendancy: Lesser Evil, p. 35 & 39) -
The Universal Analysis Group on Sposia was the clearinghouse where all alien artifacts and technology collected by the Ascendancy were taken to be studied. Most of the historical pieces eventually went to museums or art collections, while most of the technological items proved too damaged or fragmentary to be of any use and were either cataloged into storage chambers or simply destroyed. But every so often a piece of technology was found that was complete enough to be studied. Those rare items were taken to a special underground complex where teams of scientists and techs worked painstakingly to coax out their secrets. And occasionally - very occasionally- one of those was deemed of military value and moved to Vault Four. (Thrawn Ascendancy: Lesser Evil, p. 53) -
"You're absolutely sure?" Thalias pressed again, smiling to herself. As the Springhawk's only two civilians, she and Che'ri were supposedly allowed to wear whatever clothing they liked on duty. (Thrawn Ascendancy: Lesser Evil p. 63) -
But not just any warship. This craft was huge: three, possibly even four times bigger than the Whetstone. The bow bristled with clusters of spectrum lasers, with more lasers and missle tubes pointed toward the Kiljis from the massive weapons shoulders. Lines of running lights marked the flanks and dorsal spine, accenting the warship length and sheer presence. (A description of a Grysk Shatter-class WarMaster. Thrawn Ascendancy: Lesser Evil p. 88) -
Millennia ago, the Chiss had traveled extensively in Lesser Space, where legends said the inhabitants used computerized machines to chart their way between the stars. (Thrawn Ascendancy: Lesser Evil, p. 124) -

Boadil’ori’yavi
Tumblr media
Name: Boadil’ori’yavi (Iloriya) Status: Alive Age: 36 Species: Chiss Family Status: Boadil Family Merit Adoptive Gender: Female (she/her) Sexuality: Ace Heteroromantic Height: 5′9 Weight: 190 lbs Home Planet: Schesa Allegiance: Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet Position: Chief Medical Officer on the Vigilant:  Alignment: Lawful Good Personality: No nonsense, straightforward, and somewhat blunt. A strange hybrid between Mom Friend and Wine Aunt. The best doctor you will ever have but with the worst Bedside Manner possible. She will remind you to do as much self-care as possible but she refuses to take care of herself. Her sense of humor is way too dark for any doctor to have, but the crew (minus Ar’alani) thinks she’s funny. She is currently the biggest Wutrolani shipper on board and is actively helping the rest of the crew try to get Wutroow and Ar’alani together.  Backstory: Born Erighal’ori’yavi (Ghaloriya), Iloriya was taken into the Sky-Walker corps at the age of 7. She had a largely uneventful tenure as a Sky-Walker, and after losing her Sight, she was adopted by the Boadil and chose to go into the medical field. After receiving her medical degree, Iloriya chose to return to the Fleet as a medical officer, eventually being promoted to the Vigilant’s chief medical officer.
Fun fact: Her birth name is a play on the name “Gloria”

♡ _  ♡ ( Regarding Melanc, since there's more than one muse now )
Tumblr media
"Well, she's a pretty thing that's for sure. I haven't had the pleasure of knowing her for long, so sorry if that sounds a lil shallow of me but I think I'll focus on her body more." Zenika let out a chuckle.
"She has curves to die for and I just love her face. Not gonna lie, she's one of the most beautiful woman I've seen in a while, but don't say that to Boadil. She'll be mad jealous. That or she'll try to woo her, I never know with her." Another laugh escaped her, then she tapped a finger to her cheek.
"Well I can't really be spending all threes on how great she looks, so let me compliment her attitude too. That do-no-harm but take-no-shit kinda vibe? I dig. She's inserting well into our little group so I kinda hope she won't bail at the next port. Not that I'd stop her but I think she'd have fun being a pirate and tearing down bastards with us."

Okay but here’s how Chaf'orm'bintrano can still be named Formbi if he shows up in the Ascendancy books
Tumblr media
So the general convention for core names is to use the last two letters of a Chiss’s family name (Thrawn, Zistalmu, Lakinda, etc) however from the new Lesser Evil excerpt we know that the Clarr family does not do this. Instead they only use the last letter of their family name (Roscu, Rupiov, and Rivlex). Following that convention, Formbi’s name would make perfect sense.
Now, you may be wondering about Afpriuh, one of the only other named members of the Chaf family. Shouldn’t using that core name convention mean Formbi should now be Aformbi? Not necessarily. In Greater Good Lakbulbup's wife is named Dilpram, and assuming she is a member of the Boadil family like her Wookieepedia page says she is, she would set the precedent for multiple core name beginnings in one family. The other named Boadil family member is Boadil'par'gasoi who’s core name is Ilparg. If Dilpram and Ilparg are both Boadil then it would not be unreasonable for Afpriuh and Formbi to both be Chaf

Hey muk! I’m thinking of writing a Chiss character but I don’t know that much about them. Their Force sensitive people are used to navigate in light speed, right? How old do they general lose this ability? What happens to them at that point?
GASP!!! Omg you have come to the right place <33
Okay, so yes, there are force sensitive folks among the Chiss. They are typically young girls and their Sight training begins at 5, though their powers sometimes manifest earlier. At this time, their childhood memories are faded ie, their memories are wiped. Their Sight can fade beginning around the age of 10, but most I believe keep it into their early teens. In canon, Vah'nya still has her Sight in her early twenties--however she has Second Sight, which I will get into in a minute.
After their Sight fades, they are adopted into one of the ruling families. In the Ascendancy there are 9 ruling families--Mitth, Irizi, Ufsa, Plikh, Clarr, Dasklo, Boadil, Chaf, and Obbic. Generally speaking, they pretty much get the pick of the litter because Navigators, or Sky-walkers, are generally revered. It's a capitol punishment to harm one of them. However, they pretty much just fade into anonymity. No one helps them re-assimilate, they're just kind of... forgotten.
Okay, I'm going to get into some more nitty-gritty details that might be helpful, but imma put that under the cut.
While working for the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet (CEDF or EDF) a navigator is cared for by a Caretaker, or as some call them a 'momish'. The canon example we have of this is Che'ri and Thalias. However, it is very, very rare, practically unheard of for a Navigator to return to the navy or to caretaking after their retirement. Thalias is the exception because she wanted to meet Thrawn after he consoled her after losing her sight when she was a teenager and he was a cadet.
On duty, navigators aren't required to wear mini EDF uniforms, they're actually considered civilians aboard the ship. HOWEVER, I'm almost certain all of fanon says they wear uniforms and that's okay, too! I personally love that, but I digress.
Off duty, the care taker makes sure the navigator completes their duties, has a proper meal, and bath time. They have an entire suite to themselves that consists of two bedrooms, a dayroom, and a kitchenette. Che'ri's favorite snack was yapels, which I believe is something like a chip and I love that too.
As I said above, there are two kinds of Sight: Third and Second. Third is more common--it allows the navigator to, well, navigate. It's called precognition and they can see ahead seconds before disaster. Or, in Che'ri's case, days ahead of disaster. Second sight is the ability to communicate telepathically. It's been a minute since I've read Treason, but I believe the only known navigator with this skill is Vah'nya.
Regarding naming conventions: navigators don't have families, well they do, but they're taken at an early age and their memories are wiped and their family names are removed and classified. Therefore, your common navigator name will be two-three letters, an apostrophe, and then the ending part of their name. Ex: Un'hee, Che'ri, Vah'nya. An example for you in canon on how names are added and subtracted is our queen, Thalias. Prior to being adopted by the Mitth, she was Al'iastov. Upon her adoption, she became Mitth'alia'stov, with her core name being Thalias. In Chiss culture, you introduce yourself with your full name and then go by your core name for the rest of your time knowing each other pretty much.
*strokes imaginary beard* I think that's it. I'm sorry for the info dump, but you happened to ask me about my favorite topic and that is so, so dangerous XD
Good luck writing your navigator OC, if you need any help, you know where to find me! <3

JUNG HO-YEON // have you met THIRD SISTER yet? SHE/THEY/HE is a/an 24 year old GENDERF*CK CHISS TRANS WOMAN. she's originally from CSILLA and now shows loyalty to THE EMPIRE. they are best known for being a/an INQUISITOR, and i hear she's pretty RESOURCEFUL yet also KNAVISH at times; i hope they survive the galactic civil war. (FRIDAY, 30, CST, THEY/XE)
THE PAST
Born Boadil'tka'loro, core name Iltkal, in 25 BBY. Third Sister has shared most of her life with her twin Boadil’sa’loro, core name Ilsal, now known as Third Brother. Mildly Force-sensitive from birth, the twins shared a telepathy known to Chiss as Second Sight. They hid their powers so they would not be separated.
Iltkal’s love of action and puzzles quickly became a knack for breaking things in creative ways. The commercially-minded Boadils family put her to work testing their security teams (or, for the less scrupulous, sabotaging competitors).
When their twin stole an archaeological find, Iltkal covered his tracks. Their hijinks caused a diplomatic incident between the Boadil family and the Mitth family. The Boadils then sent the Loro twins to investigate the Galactic Empire, a mission which conveniently removed them from Chiss space.
Iltkal found work with Imperial Intelligence stress-testing the Empire’s security measures and staff. Her human colleagues came to see her as a nuisance; she enjoyed frustrating troopers and officers alike, besting them in combat or with wits.
Another of Ilsal’s archaeological discoveries changed the twins’ lives, this time a pair of Sith gauntlets. Their Force abilities, once incidental, became deadly. Together, the twins killed the Inquisitor sent to curtail their power, and together they took Third Sibling’s place. Iltkal became Third Sister.
It didn’t last. In 2 BBY, Third Brother died defending Third Sister from Rebel forces. Weakened and equipped with only half the power of the Sith gauntlets, Third Sister fell short of Lord Vader’s expectations. He disposed of her in 1 BBY.
THE PRESENT
After a fatal lightsaber strike, Third Sister awakens in the year 7 ABY to find the Empire fallen. Even more shocking, they find Third Brother alive and well.
Though relieved to be reunited with their twin, the year that they survived after Third Brother’s death means that they are subtly out of sync.
Heartened by the news that Vader is absent, Third Sister turns to the remains of the Empire and the other living Inquisitors, hoping they can provide the challenge and stimulation of her previous work.
PERSONALITY
Blasé. Third Sister affects indifference to everything, regardless of how much she actually cares.
Competitive. They love nothing more than a good challenge, except for winning at one.
Satirical. Well-spoken, cultured, and voted her graduating class’s most likely to be mocking you without you realizing it.
Slick. Though Third Sister rarely has a plan, she’s adept at improvising and making it seem like she knew what she was doing all along.
Hotheaded. Behind the shell of apathy and erudition lies a proud, rash, and brutal warrior. Provoke her at your own risk.

Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising Chapter Seven - Chapter Nine
Chapter Seven
Samakro is not tolerating any bullshit or insubordination from anyone in his crew
And what is more Samakro trusts Thrawn, despite Thrawn not laying “out his tactics in advance for everyone to see,” because that “doesn’t mean he doesn’t have them. Whatever he’s got planned for today, he’ll get us through it.”
worth noting that people around Thrawn support him more than his own (and pretty much unseen but much talked about) family
Finally we get an introduction to General Yiv
booming voice
meets people face to face for some evil hobnobbing
has “fungoid strands” draped “over his shoulders like living epaulets”
getting some real hentai vibes from that
cleft jaw
smiles in a way that looks “like a predator preparing to strike”
but still has a face that is described as both jovial and implacable
straight up dismisses or mocks those “who didn’t believe solely in the godhood of Yiv himself.”
if you have to bow down to him you have to do it face down right at his feet
still really cannot picture what he looks like but the details help
Memories VI
bit more information on how Thrawn is viewed by other Chiss: he is considered to possess either “insight or genius or insanity” that was required “to make the connections that [he] seemed to intuitively grasp”
so depending on who is looking at him, Thrawn is somewhere on the spectrum between genius and absolute madman
There are other “sky-walkers” that are non-Chiss that work for the Navigators’ Guild and will work with anyone to do anything (legal or illegal)
Chapter Eight
This is when Ab’begh is taken out of the story (no idea if she will be brought back)
The fact that members of the Irizi and Mitth families are working together is cause for concern among the other families
a bit more about Csilla - military offices are “under the planet’s frozen surface” and are within close proximity “of the Syndicure and the rest of the Ascendancy’s governmental centers.” So all the important offices are grouped together in roughly one spot. Will this come into play later is/when Csilla is attacked?
some dark stuff - the Chiss board a vessel full of Nikarduns who had committed “mass suicide minutes before the...boarding parties breached the hatches.”
this is DARK for Star Wars
But Wutroow imitating Ambassador Ilparg’s posture is sending me. I want more of her.
Chapter Nine
It is noted that Thrawn’s name is well known across their part of the Galaxy, probably for being that fucking art guy
another family rivalry is mentioned (between the Droc and Boadil). Thrawn mentioned his fears of Chiss civil war in Treason (I think). Could Csilla fall apart due to the splintering of different families/factions vying for power? This could play out like ancient Germania or Britannia with different factions/rulers fighting amongst themselves instead of focusing on the bigger, outside threats
This exchange is great:
Thrawn stepped onto the bridge. “My apologies, Admiral,” he said as he crossed to Ar’alani and Ilparg. “Apologies, Ambassador. My studies took longer than expected.”
“What studies were those, Senior Captain?” Ilparg asked suspiciously.
“Tactical data,” Ar’alani put in.
“Tactical data?” Ilparg repeated scornfully. “Is that what the Expansionary Fleet calls art these days?”
Ar’alani clenched her teeth. “The first rule of strategy is to know your enemy, Ambassador,” she said. “That includes their battle tactics; but also their history, their philosophy, and yes, sometimes even their art.”

#scifi #review this immortal by roger zelazny
#scifi #review this immortal by roger zelazny
Basically
Tumblr media
This Immortal, known in an earlier incarnation as Call me Conrad, is one of Zelazny's heroic epics with no less than the fate of humanity at stake. The principal character, Conrad, is typical of most of Zelazny's heros. He is for all practical purposes immortal. Like Bugs Bunny, he does not go out of his way to cause trouble for others, but does not suffer abuse lightly. He plans carefully, trying not to act rashly. And he changes his feelings and views as he grows older and wiser. These traits lead, of course, to conflict. Conrad is retained to give a high caste alien from Vega named Cort Myshtigo a tour of earth for a survey. Because of the relationship between Vegans and humanity, this incites some resentment against the alien and concern for the future of humanity. The smart money has wagered that the way to save humanity is to kill Cort. Conrad makes it plain that he prefers to wait until he has enough information to decide, and spends most of his time shielding Cort from attempts on his life.
Irony
The novel contains a great deal of irony which is used to show mankind returning from the brink of extinction and beginning the process of healing its wounds.. Episodes occur in which the putative destroyer is the instrument of salvation. The first of these occurs in Egypt. Hasan has been hired by the Agency to protect Cort. But as is known or suspected by everyone except Cort, Hasan is also a Radpole agent sent to kill him. In the final ironic twist of this episode, Hasan saves Cort from a boadile while trying to kill him. Other ironies abound. Twice, those thought lost are returned and bring salvation with them. The first returned is Conrad's dog, Bortran. Bortran had gone missing years earlier and has been searching for his master ever since. After Conrad returns to Greece on this tour, Bortran crosses his trail. He catches up with Conrad just in time to rescue him from the Kouretes. Next to return from the presumed dead is Conrad's wife, Cassandra. While burning an old friend, Conrad and his party are set upon by the Beast of Thessaly. In a dramatic sequence worthy of Dickens, they battle the Beast until Cassandra plays Zeus and strikes the Beast dead . In a more prolonged twist, the Radpole is trying to kill the one Vegan who can save earth and set it free. Throughout the story Conrad repeatedly intercedes to stay his execution, opposing the Radpole which he had founded decades before. The final irony is in the very nature of the Kallikanzaros. Rather than being the instrument of the world's destruction as in Greek myth, he is to be its savior.
Symbolism
Symbols of loss, destruction and ultimate redemption strengthen the themes presented through the use of irony. Symbols of the destruction of earth's civilization include the spiderbats, the Kouretes, the Beast of Thessaly and the threatened dismantling of the Pyramids. The beginning of the restoration of civilization is symbolized by the return of Bortran and Cassandra as well as the destruction of the Kouretes, the Beast of Thessaly and the inroads being made against the spiderbats. Conrad symbolizes earth civilization itself. Cort refers to him as a sort of "ghost of place." The restoration of Bortran and Cassandra, essential to Conrad's wholeness as a person, support this symbolism. Also, Conrad's fungal rash, present at the beginning of the story, has been eliminated at the end. He still has his limp, but his healing has begun, and like the earth itself, he endures
Steve Troy calls This Immortal a "lighthearted romp." And it is. This in no way detracts from the seriousness of Zelazny's themes or nor does it reduce the effectiveness of his presentation. It does make the story more enjoyable. The twists and rescues do not merely heighten suspense and grip the reader. They also provide the framework for the irony and symbolism that carry Zelazny's themes of returning from the brink and of recovering from destruction.
QUOTES
My thinking is usually pretty good, but I seem to do it after I do my talking-- by which time I've generally destroyed all basis for further conversaton.
If heaven didn't want me then, I'm not going to ask a second time.
Vocabulary
adytum- "1 the innermost room or shrine in certain old temples, to be entered only by priests 2 a sanctum" (Excerpted from Compton's Reference Collection 1996 copyright (c) 1995 Compton's NewMedia, Inc.)

Cassandra- Conrad's new wife. According to  Bulfinch's Mythology, "Queen Hecuba and her daughter Cassandra were carried captives to Greece. Cassandra had been loved by Apollo, and he gave her the gift of prophecy; but afterwards offended with her, he rendered the gift unavailing by ordaining that her predictions should never be believed." In This Immortal, Conrad disbelieves both Cassandra's accurate warnings of danger and her later prediction that things will go well.

Kouretes- "returns this line from the play The Bacchae by Euripides:" 'O secret chamber of the Kouretes and you holy Cretan caves, parents to Zeus, where the Korybantes with triple helmet invented for me in their caves this circle..." That is because the Curetes (the more common spelling) were spirits on the island of Crete who protected the newly born god Zeus when his mother Rhea hid him from his father Cronos, who would otherwise have eaten the baby. The Curetes danced around banging spears on shields to make a clattering din to drown out Zeus's cries.'" Ozymandias- "Here are two verses from the poem Ozymandias by Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822):
'I met a traveler from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read."
... "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.'"
