actually i want there to be a god purely so i have someone to @ in my letter of complaint about stupidly subtle spelling differences between english and dutch words that mean the exact same, especially when the different spellings are virtually or completely impossible to hear if you say the words out loud. i'm keeping a list just so i can look at it when i want to be irrationally angry, and currently it looks like this:

eighteen / achttien

caffeine / cafeïne

career / carrière

calendar / kalender

mayonnaise / mayonaise

mafia / maffia

#the most shameful thing about my lifelong google history is how many times i've looked up the number of Rs in career #both mayon(n)aise and maf(f)ia are recent additions to the list btw. and they deserve a special spot of honor for their contrast #it's not even that one of these languages always doubles the letter!! they alternate!! wtf man!! #languages #* #also shout out to calendar/kalender because the c/k difference makes sense to me but the -ar/-er drives me nuts
