An eon ago @floggingink tagged me in a music shuffle meme! I'm not a huge playlist person, but here's a selection of tabs I had open, stuff I heard on the radio in the part few days, etc etc. (Is the radio the analog version of shuffle? You tell me.)

The Who, "Baba O'Riley" — The episode of Joe Pera Talks to You where Joe Pera discovers Baba O'Riley (sample here) is such a pure and joyful watch, and also IMO one of the best on-screen depictions I have ever seen of how the first ecstatic stage of a new hyperfixation feels: this, more, again, again! Let me share this thing with you, strangers and friends, so that you might also feel transcendent joy!

The Lone Bellow, "Honey" — Love the mellow energy on this one. For some reason I feel like if this had been on the radio in 2017/2018, it would have shown up in a bunch of top-shelf Bughead fics. Maybe it's the "Put the pedal to the floor/Let the darkness come" lyric?(@anniemurphys, thoughts?)

R.E.M., "Strange Currencies" — This Esquire article described the soundtrack for The Bear as "widely praised by forty-something-year-old Midwestern dads," and like, uhhhh: guilty as charged.

boygenius, "Not Strong Enough" — "Always an angel, never a god": what a mood, what a mood. Also, it reminded me that I really want to make a mixtape of song pairs with opposite titles. Obviously the match for this one is Sheryl Crow's "Strong Enough."

Twisted Sister, "We're Not Going to Take It" — I have always wondered about the lyric "Your life is trite and jaded/Boring and confiscated." My theory is that it was supposed to be "constipated," but that that was actually too much rebellion for the label.

Skeeter Davis, "The End of the World" — Whenever I hear this song, it's playing over the credits of Mad Men in November 1963. But the other day I heard it on my local oldies radio station, followed directly by Len's unparalleled 1999 one-hit wonder "Steal My Sunshine," and gentle readers, I about had a stroke.

Dove Cameron, "Boyfriend" — I've never encountered this song anywhere outside of the Internet, but anytime I hear it, I walk around with it stuck in my head for the next 3 days. It's basically the same lick over and over again, but when it's this sticky, you don't honestly need more than that.

Jimmy Buffett, "Come Monday" — Awww, Jimmy. Legitimately sad about his passing.

Duncan Sheik, "Barely Breathing" — Truly, the '90s will always be with us. Or at least with me.

Joni Mitchell (with Brandi Carlile and others, 2022), "Both Sides Now" — Do you need to have a good cry? Well, you do now. Consider this an open tag for anyone who wants to play - I'd love to hear what you've been listening to!

“Why are you standing out here? The party’s inside…”

He wonders why a girl would waste such a beautiful dress on an audience of no one in the rather chilly almost there January air. She doesn’t even have a shawl – surely, she’s cold or…

“Why are you out here if the party’s inside?” she retorts back swinging her hips around along with the skirt of her blush-colored dress.

He himself had escaped because everyone’s eyes were elsewhere, and even though he was used to that in his daily life outcasted from the inner circles of high school, this was a first for him, being invited to a party on New Year’s Eve, by his best friend Archie and he thought for once, maybe he could have fun.

He could be part of the inner circle.

He was wrong.

“Guess it got a little claustrophobic in there.”

It was partially true. He didn’t quite know where to stand or how to move and so as he gravitated to his safety, to the outskirts.

He eventually gravitated outside.

“Same. I’ve never been invited to one of these things before. Not used to the crowd…”

Who wouldn’t invite her to a party? Betty Cooper - with that dress?

“That sounds hard to believe,” his eyes drifting down to the neatly laid stone of the Pembrooke courtyard.

Such a contrast from the loose gravel at the trailer park.

Maybe he should tell her he thinks as he shuffles the best sneakers he owned. The ones that still are worn thin on the heal but at least don’t have holes near the toes. That it’s his first time too. Here at one of these parties. Or maybe he should say something about the dress, remark on how someone would be crazy not to be out here dancing with such a beautiful…

“You want to dance?”

He quickly looks up and sees her a foot away from him rather than standing at the railing where he pictured her before.

He swallows hard and gets momentarily taken in by a sea of emerald.

“I’d love to.”

She’s the one to lead, to place one hand into his and the other at his back against the jacket Pop’s said he could borrow for the occasion. It wasn’t fitted to him at all, but at least it fit the scene and that’s all that mattered. He innocently places his own hand at her back as well and feels the chiffon fabric of her dress under his fingers. It’s so soft he nearly forgets to take a step forward as she pushes forward and back to the left and to the right. He follows her direction as best as he can and nearly makes it through until…

“Ouch!”

“Ohmygosh, I’m so…”

“It’s ok…” her checks now matching the pink of her dress as she shakes off him accidently stepping on her footing, but keeping a hand at his back, but most importantly, her hand within his.

“You did great. They might even invite you to one of these things again.” Pausing and swallowing down what he couldn’t believe was nerves, “Jug.”

Jabitha caused the loss of 75% of the audience? lol

The couple they pretended weren’t love interests half of season 5 because Tabi was obviously a mammy, lesbian or teenager? 

The couple they claim are dull and that no one notices incite such passion can affect a half a million viewers before even a couple? 

Before Erinn was even casted? lol

We all know who killed the show.

Lili. And KJ. But mostly Lili. Because I don’t even think KJ was into the concept of Barchie after saw the reaction they got from cheating ep. Pretty sure he thought hooking up with Betty who at that time was popular (cause Cole) would translate to his popularity and he’d be winning those teen choice and people awards. Except not.

No, Lili killed the show. Because while maybe they couldn’t work together personally it did not have to lead to Barchie or endorsing cheating. THAT is the couple that killed the show. 

ANY other pairing and maybe REAL Bughead fans hold out hope for a reunion. Maybe they put up with new couples in hopes come together in end like R&R on Friends. But it was Archie and it was Betty and those two killed the spirit of Bughead and thus the show and your precious blond is the one who pushed it and still does. Because Archie wasn’t some random cheat. He was the one person Jughead always deep down caused him to wonder if Betty was with him because she loved him or passing time. There is no way they come back from that. You cannot believe a word out of her mouth now if you did pair them. She lied for 4 year’s. Bughead is dead and Lili killed it as much as the show did. REAL Bughead fans, of which I  was one, know that. That’s why they left and will never return. 

I stay only because I love Jughead and hope he gets his happy ending. Which right now is Tabi. She’s everything Betty never was and they are perfectly matched. But they no more can bring a million viewers back then they can drive a million away. Give credit where it is due. Barchie, Lili Reinhart and KJ Apa are the real living stars at driving away an audience. No one does it better.

Sigh another day, another racist post, why are so many (I know not all) BH stans like this? I block and unfollow and they come out of the woodwork. I swear they're like hydra. The things the accuse Tabitha of, thier wishes, headcannons and desires... And I have to ask, did everyone honestly think that all the OG couples would be endgame, all the HIGH SCHOOL couples would stay together? No one would move past those relationships clouded by thier traumas of the time? Outgrow thier SO? Really?

They seem to really get rowdy when big Jabitha episodes come around 👀

They take out their anger about their ship not happening on Tabitha/Jabitha. We've seen this kind of behavior ever since Tabitha's obvious introduction as Jughead's romantic partner. They don't take her seriously as a viable leading lady or love interest for Jughead, and that's on them. The way they view Tabitha and her character tells you everything you need to know.

Honestly, I don't know how you sit through season 4, watch Bughead (and Varchie) implode like they did and have the audacity confidence to think those ships are coming back, much less be endgame. The timejump didn't break up those pairings and those couples, Betty and Archie did (long before the timejump ever came to be). Betty and Archie and their feelings for each other have been teased every single season of the show, they were inevitable. It doesn't mean the old ships weren't good or don't have good moments, of course they do. But the ships were never locked in and set in stone, especially pre-timejump.

The only show I can think of where the OG couples stayed til the end is PLL and one of those couples included a literal groomer so... sometimes what's best for the characters is to let them grow and mature, not lock them in to the choices they made as teenagers.

I love adult Jughead, I think he is the best version of the character. I think Tabitha is his perfect match and I think he is the perfect partner for her. Jughead and Tabitha fit together seamlessly and they are so healthy as a couple. They are adorable and inspirational.

Some people can't handle seeing Jughead with a beautiful, confident, intelligent, driven, and compassionate black woman and it shows...

I've said it once and I'll say it again, the racist takes that pop up when Jabitha get content are best left ignored, they can argue with the wall. Tabitha is fantastic and Jughead Jones loves her with all his heart.

Pro-Barchie, Riverdale Post Because I Told Myself I Didn’t Like This Show, But Oops, I Have Opinions

don't read this if you don't want season 6 spoilers 

Does anyone actually really want Betty and Archie to end up together by the end of the series? I realize the show kind of wrote itself into an out in that regard because they're back in the 50s and, by the time they make it back to their time, the relationship dynamics could change again due to them living as teenagers that (probably) weren't dating, but I really want Betty and Archie to be--as the show would say--"endgame." Pre-timeskip, I agree that Veronica/Archie and Betty/Jughead fit better (even if I was extremely jaded with those relationships by season 5), but after the seven-year gap, the people they are now makes me feel like Archie and Betty fit way better than their original pairings. 

It's sad that Veronica doesn't have anyone set up for her, but I really don't want to see the show back out of the Betty/Archie relationship just to go back to how it was before. I'd love to see Veronica learn to be alone so she can find who she should be now that she doesn't have to concern herself with her father blackening her soul; then, maybe, a new character could be introduced for her to be with or an existing one could be a surprise soulmate for her or maybe she finds fulfillment some other way. I don't want Veronica to be left hanging just because she doesn't want to be with Reggie, but Betty and Archie, and Tabitha and Jughead, match so well with each other, and I don't want that to be upset just to have a Bughead/Varchie endgame. Veronica can be happy, too, in season 7. I really believe that, and when she is, the pairings will be perfect. To me, at least. Well, once Cheryl and Toni get back together, of course. Though, I suppose that does leave a Fangs/Kevin/Moose problem. But this is a Barchie post, and it’s done now.

“when i said i’ll never stop loving you i really meant it betty, because after all this time i’ve never stopped.” if it wasn’t for the lump in her throat betty would have responded, but her eyes were full of tears and her hands were shaking and she couldn’t quite get out what she wanted to say - at twenty years old, stepping foot back into pop’s chock’lit shoppe for the first time in a year, she’d have thought that she wouldn’t be crying in her and jughead’s old booth. his hand reached to take hers over the table, and she gripped his tightly as she sniffled quietly with a small smile. neither veronica nor archie had come back to town like promised, but in a way she was secretly happy of the fact; if they were there then betty wouldn’t have had the chance to say what was on her mind, that the year spent without jughead was the worst of her life, and she couldn’t take another away from him. her hand moved to lace their fingers as the tears flowed down her flushed cheeks, but the smile that was on her face was enough for a matching expression to appear on his features across the table too. “i never stopped loving you, either.”
