PRIDE & PREJUDICE & ZOMBIES (2016) Adaptation du livre éponyme de Seth Grahame-Smith qui parodiait l’oeuvre de Jane Austen (dont le roman ORGUEIL ET PRÉJUGÉS fut adapté au cinéma en 2005), le projet avait, sur le papier, de quoi nous séduire quant à son résultat final: en effet, quoi de mieux qu’une réalité alternative teintée de comédie, localisée dans une Angleterre du XIXème siècle pestiférée par une apocalypse zombie? Hélas, malgré une introduction attractive, le film de David O. Russell (ah non, il est parti) bref, de Craig Gillespie... Heu, pardon, de Burr Steers, finit par traîner en longueur et tourner en rond, une fois l’intrigue posée. Malgré quelques explosions sanglantes de zombies, on remarque assez vite que le budget correct (on imagine sans peine que le cachet de Lena Headey et autres Matt Smith ont dû engloutir à eux seuls une bonne partie de celui-ci) ne suffira pas à rassasier notre faim: l’humour est somme toute léger, les combats se déroulent pour la plupart dans l’ombre (pour cacher le manque de moyens?) et les acteurs principaux n’arrivent pas à égaler certains seconds rôles. Dommage donc, que ce mash-up temporel et thématique ne prenne pas: la volonté, à l’écran, ne suffit jamais. Certains SFX flous évidents nous détournent de l’immersion, et ce n’est pas parce que Natalie Portman (s’étant désistée pour le premier rôle - une façon de faire relative à l’entreprise, on dirait) produit le tout que ça changera quelque chose. Avec un bon paquet d’idées amusantes, PRIDE & PREJUDICE & ZOMBIES peine à se démarquer, se reléguant au rang de DTV assez moyen dans son ensemble et bien trop sage pour une oeuvre parodique. Moins cool que son pitch et de ses visuels promotionnels, ce film décevra l’attente que l’on peut en avoir, la faute à quelques millions de dollars sacrifiés pour le cast, et à un jeu de chaises musicales qui aura vu se succéder plusieurs réalisateurs pour achever le projet: incomplet, inégal, et même pas sauvé de justesse. Dommage... UN PEU FRUSTRANT /20

This is not a drama. This is an outrageous comedy. Am I supposed to take it seriously when Zac Efron has sex with a ghost in this? This is based off a popular book about death and the movie has such a great opportunity to make it into a nuanced, beautiful, and gentle movie about the afterlife but it's a colossal mess. For starters, don't put Zac Efron in this movie! I understand that Hollywood wanted to give him a chance to do something more serious but, believe me, he is not serious in this. He tries but it just doesn't work. When he tries to be sad it just looks like he's posing for a model shoot.

You also need a new director. Why is the director of 17 Again trying to make this? Get a more meditative director like Ang Lee or Clint Eastwood or Sofia Coppola. The movie doesn't have a clue that making stuff more dramatic isn't as effective as playing with the scene. If Zac Efron's cute little brother is gonna die in a car accident I don't wanna hear Efron crying with the addition of painfully overdramatic and sad music.

The problem is that Charlie St. Cloud wants to be a movie too much for teenagers. That's fine of course but where's the style? Where's the beautiful aspect of the story? Where are the chills and realism that Zac Efron is really talking to his dead brother and having sex with another ghost girl? If you wanna see better movies about death then go see Hereafter or Never Let Me Go. Steer away from this piece of junk.
