i kinda feel like one thing that fails post rtd era is that they erased a lot of the continuity between doctors and companions like moffat and from what ive seen chibnall to some degree let the doctor keep some general issues from their past as another doctor but it is not as present as it was in rtd era in which the doctor didnt move on from regeneration to regeneration or companion to companion and the influence of what was before was a palpable motivation in all of the doctor's actions. like i think for example it's very visible when you compare 10 losing rose and how this affects everything about how he relates to other people and who he is with martha because of how big a hit that was to him and then 11 coming fresh off erasing donna's memories mostly as a new person with issues that pop up from time to time but more as if they were acquired so long ago that they're not as on the surface even though it just happened. which could be attributed to the effect of regeneration but it was more interesting the way rtd did it in that who the doctor is at the point of regeneration informs so much of who he becomes to the point that 10 comes into the world loving who 9 loved in such a palpable way that informs all of his character arc
